The GPD Win 2 has been one of my top choices for handheld gaming for the last four months and I felt like it was finally time to do an in-depth review. The GPD Win 2 received a product refresh in the middle of 2019, with only slight differences between the 8100y version and the older 7y30 that came before it. As one of the most expensive handheld systems on the market, is the GPD Win 2 worth the money?

They aren't really competitors though - the Win Max is a different class device from the Win 2. The inevitable Win 3 will be the real successor to the Win 2.

Even if modern PC handhelds don't run all emulators well (some emulators just require monstrous performance), just what it can perform teemed with the fact that you can play native PC games on the go is more than enough reason to love it. Dude, playing Monster Hunter World on that thing would be amazing.
you can play all 2000s PC games at 60fps on the go, concidering PC has games like Clive Bakers Undying, Call of Cthulhu Dark Corners of the Earth, Pathologic, Mafia The City of Lost Heaven, Condemned, and you can put all those games in your pocket, this device is insanely worth it, even in 2024
Great review, totally agree on your last point, GPD should hire whoever engineered those pricey mods that provide better performance potential.

I think it is simply expensive for retro gaming, as there are many other alternatives. But to play through your entire Steam library on this, albeit falling behind to the last gen (with the lack of processing power) , is priceless.
Win2 runs most games better than PS3 or 360. The performance is on par with Switch.

Too many PC games dont work on the handheld without a mouse and keyboard or a proper monitor to see all the text and UI elements. A Switch is far better.

Sly2Cooper It can. Watch the video reviews for them. Witcher 3 got a patch last month that boosted performance. The Switch can accomplish this because its Nvidia gpu is like one you would find in an entry level gaming laptop, instead of their own proprietary gpu. Its why the Switch has 2,000 games. But what matters is the games not the graphics. People with $2,000 gaming PC’s play Undertale and Hotline Miami. You cant play your smartphone games on a TV. A smartphone doesnt have the AAA console games, and a gaming laptop doesn’t have the portability or price of the switch.

Real talk: while it covers many systems, there are considerably cheaper options if that is what you are after. Your average Android phone should handle this just fine, short of Windows-based visual novels, and there are options there as well (there are cheap Windows tablets and laptops- I think those will be your best bet, and the same for most people wanting an emulation device that isnt *expressly* portable).
RaineTCG vita only supports ported titles, although on the titles that were ported, I agree with you wholeheartedly

I was watching this review whilst playing on my GPD Win 2 from mid 2018, and this is the first I've heard about the 2019 hardware refresh despite being an Indiegogo backer!
The refresh was mainly because the m3-7y30 CPU they originally used was discontinued. Other small pc's that also used that chip like the latte panda also switched to the 8100y cpu. Performance-wise, it's essentially the same as the m3 cpu, so it's not really a major upgrade
I own a beast gaming pc and the GPD Win 2. The reason is that it is a Indie game machine fir me while I travel. This is worth every penny.

Nice to finally see a handheld that can run PS2 games. Maybe in another couple years we will be at a point where there will be more options and everything will be fleshed out and more affordable.

And my salary is less than $500 a month for those who say it's expensive, lol. Paying $60 for every Switch port of an older game that costs $5 on a Steam sale - well that what is ridiculously expensive. Also didn't have to wait or pay nothing to get my existing Steam library on Win 2 right from the start.

@Taki for using the left stick as a mouse you can install the app "Controller Companion". The switch has to be in controller mode for it to work.

This system is seriously impressive. It'd be nice if another refresh (or a new model all together) comes out this year with 10th gen Intel CPUs for even better performance. But to be honest, $800 is simply way too much for this kind of hardware. But then again it goes for around the same price as a normal laptop with similar hardware so... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ I also wish it had clickable joysticks, but I guess you can't have everything.

I love your review. Quite frank, in-depth, analytical, & concise. I like how the business functionality is integrated with leisure/gaming in the design. But I think it's also a little funny/clumsy how tightly packed the keyboard is. Ingenious still.
I love my GPD Win 2. Its an amazing device. I upgraded mine to 1tb SSD and have a 512gb micro SD card in it. All that content and it fits in my pocket. Yes they are expensive but the sheer versatility of it in my opinion justifies it. I would do the heatsink mod but too worried about scuffing it or worse, damaging it. It can get warm but its not too bad.

Hey Taki, great review! I have the GPD Win 2 with the updated CPU as well. Don’t know if it was an error, but you said the microSDXC slot does only 2GB of memory? Don’t know if you meant 256GB, cause right now I have a 64GB in mine, and it’s all there. Great review otherwise, I’ve been enjoying it quite a bit! Thanks for the recommendations on he software to undervolt the power. That’ll be nice to configure!

Man, when we were in the early days of the Emulation era, we had ethics about it. No new systems in the market, rom hacks and translations, but none of that leaching new releases and in-market stuff.
I mean the rom hacks, homebrews, and the translations are great! I do agree with these devices though. If you want to sell a device that emulates games, really it should be cheaper to buy and still great. I mean the Raspberry Pi makes a fucking PS2 now days! XD

I had bought one when the Indiegogo had launched. Sadly my unit had some issues. I tinkered quite a lot on this badboy and ultimately sold it by pretty much breaking even (happy for that).
It's a great device but mine lost it's purpose as the wi-fi turned out to be unreliable despite changing the antennas. Geforce Now, Stadia, PS Remote Play, Xbox Remote or Gamestream were hardly an option and it was my number one goal at the time for this device... I might give it a second try when the Max comes out.

Thanks. Got mine this year for 600 USD (during a local sell), and 3DS is the only disappointment I've had so far (e.g. MK7). My previous GPD Win 1 battery died twice after one year respectively, for each battery; I can only hope that doesn't happen to my Win 2 as well, to declare it the very best handheld in existence.
GPD has a 1 year warranty. There was a mass problem with some faulty batteries on Win 2 but they fixed mine for free and changed battery vendor since then.

Its exciting how fast yuzu originally was implemented, I remember like, 1 year in they got it to slightly work, sucks that it hasnt progressed too much though. I guess the switch is still being supported, so it doesn't matter too much, I just hope there's a more playable version by the time the switch gets a successor(prob about 4 years or more in the future) until then, I have a switch of my own so I guess it doesnt matter to me too much
GPD Win series is really neat (for PC gamer like me it's probably the best option), it's a shame though that GPD Win 1 is no longer produced, since it was sold for about half of price of GPD Win 2. Yeah, its hardware wasn't so powerful and had some issues, but I personally still play on GPD Win 1 (despite buying and testing GPD Win 2 :P), since I've got attached to it. Really have hope that in next years GPD Win handhelds will become cheaper (or maybe there will be some reasonable alternatives? not counting infamous Smash-Z and PGS), because (IMO) there is nothing better than handheld which can deal with both DOS and Windows games. Possibility to play on the go in such games as Jazz Jackrabbit 2, Missionforce: Cyberstorm, Age of Wonders and many, many more is priceless.

As an owner of both models, stay away unless you want the screen and your heart broken. Put nearly 4 months worth of FF14 ingame over the past year and the whole time I would literally have nightmares about the left hinge snapping. The plastic will fail after enough swings
I love mine. I've used it for almost every type of game imaginable. It also connects up nicely to the TV for big screen play. I have used it in conjunction with my VR setup as well as an omni controller so I don't have to have controllers, a keyboard, and a mouse all around me since it has all three built in. Great system. As for price I would recommend waiting for the next iteration and jumping on the kickstarter. I got my Win 2 for 500$ as opposed to the 7-1K price on amazon because I jumped on the early price that GPD tends to do for each of their products.
How did you use it with your vr?
@@jaimef5668 basically since it has a keyboard, mouse, and controller integrated I used it as my terminal and connected to my main system. It just took care of input that didn't involve my vr controllers. All the heavy lifting was done by another system.

W530 that I picked up for $200. It came with 16gb of ram and the 1080p screen replacement. I never knew why people liked them this much until I made it my daily PC. I've upgraded it with an SSD, an MSATA, and a HDD in the CD bay.
@@TakiUdon I have bought several through out the years. I have gifted them to family as well. These laptops are tanks that will continue to work for years to come. I plan on getting more and doing all the upgrades. It's fun and getting such a capable PC for cheap gives me a special feeling. Lol I even go to the thinkpads Reddit forum lol.

was so dissapointed by the gpd win first gen because of the bad dpad battery screen woobble and instability on windows (try many different distro) that I'm no more onto buying a device where is not easy to change everything that is vital. Anyway as usual very good review :)

@@ArtemisWasHere that's because those have a premium price tag. An MSI, Asus, Acer or Dell gaming laptop can be had for $775 or less.
@@johnyjoe2k I got an MSI GE63 for $1,500 mark. Twice the price, but WAY more games can be played, better cooling, better processing, it's just better than that. Now portability lacks and even though it is a laptop, a track pad still sucks. Mac is way better with their track pads to be honest. Though their OEM keyboards are pricy and not reliable even in my experience. Trust me, it's more money and work to get an MSI but worth it. I agree, just thought passer-bys might want a bit of bonus information about a mid tier MSI.
One more thing that isn't mentioned, which is a knock to its built quality. GPD has yet to get the hinge right in any one of its products, and it will be an issue with the Win Max. More often than not, it will *always* be too tight. You'll need to pop open the back plate to loosen the hinge, or the plastic *will* break eventually.
I would like one but I can not see how I would get this over a very small laptop that is capable of emulation, and many of those can go up to the GameCube, PS2, and Xbox, and since this can not play Switch games well, then there is no point.

Out of all of the gaming handhelds that have ever existed in all of gaming history, the GPD Win 2 has been my favorite handheld to use while I’d be gaming on the go. And for what I loved about the GPD Win 2 best, while I can still be there to play all of my favorite games that have ever been released on either the Nintendo Entertainment System, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, the Nintendo 64, the GameCube, the original PlayStation, the Sega Genesis and the Sega DreamCast as well as the Game Boy, the Game Boy Color, the Game Boy Advance and the PSP as well as stream my PlayStation 4 whenever I can get Internet, I can also be there to play some of my favorite PlayStation 2 games in general, including those that sadly never saw neither a PlayStation 4 rerelease, a GameCube port nor a DreamCast port like Star Wars: Episode III: Revenge of the Sith as well as some that I may want to mod to create bigger and better experiences for people like myself like Kingdom Hearts II and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, but that can all depend on your taste in nostalgia in general. I would also consider using my GPD Win 2 to play all of my favorite classic PC games in which I have nostalgic memories for in which sadly still never get to see any mobile ports of some sort, even up to this day. And when regarding the different PC games that I’ve played on there so far, there have been some I’ve played where I may get a black screen while running certain PC games in particular. However, other PC games that I’ve played have ran flawlessly. However as much as I would consider using a GPD Win 2 for gaming on the go aside from the Nintendo Switch, gaming wouldn’t be the only thing that I would consider doing on the GPD Win 2 at all. I would also consider using a GPD Win 2 for running certain apps in which I sadly cannot do on neither an iOS nor on an Android device. Like for example, I would also consider using a GPD Win 2 to arrange music on Sibelius. And whenever I feel ready to do so, I would also consider using a GPD Win 2 to do game designing on the go whenever I’m not home or at the very least I’m unable to use my MacBook Pro to do game designing. And when being very honest on what game designing software I’d use to make my dream game, after hearing good things about it, I just knew that I may want to use Unreal Engine for that.

Even with some limitations, the GPD Win still offers way more flexibility than the Switch. At least I can browse the internet, transfer & play movies/music files, and play games outside of the Switch marketplace.

If you look at those, they have 8c/8t and 6c/12t with a Default TDP at 15W
They even have the Ryzen 7 4800U which is 8c/16T, also at 15W.
Now, the base clock is 1.8 GHz, but for a portable device, this is pretty high.
That lower usage, probably combined with a larger 5,000 to 10,000 mAh battery, will give it pretty good battery life.

Yober Where does all the heat go now? If you have a low power equivalent of the 4000 series, you can actually use a higher power draw CPU vs Intel’s CPUs since AMD is a node ahead at the moment. So there’s a chance that you could have a 25W limit and it only puts out as much heat as a 15W unit, which is what this currently is from what I can tell.
Just snagged one for $315 on ebay. With luck somebody can buy one for $275 which is incredible value for what it is.
Controler companion on steam is the app you need to try :)
Or just enable controller support in Steam, and make a profile for Desktop. These are features that literally come with Steam.
actually going to start a custom pc handheld with the exact chip this console has. Main goal is emulation (specifically Wii U and 3Ds emulation).

My biggest issue with this device are those nubby analog sticks. If the WIN 2 were built into a chassis like the original Nvidia Shield so it could support full analog sticks, it'd be almost perfect.
This would have been perfect for me at the age of 12, I'm not walking around playing Pokemon on the street anymore though.

technically, if you own the game, you're allowed to legally download the ROM. Or you could just.. not.. own the game, and download the ROM. then the police will bust into your house

Sure, but you do need to find out if they work for you because it is a lottery after all. My Wii/GC profile is 8.5/8.5 -75/-75, but I probably could have made a second profile with 5.5/5.5. I didn't know I could just copy the entire XTU Manager to get more slots. My 3ds profile is 8.5/8.5 -50/-50. Any undervolt higher than that and the app would crash playing Pokemon Ultra. I used 7/7 -80/-80 for PS2 for everything that wasn't GoW.

@@TakiUdon I've heard that older models with M3-7Y30 CPU run emulators slightly better. Then again Win2 with newer CPUs are better for PC games. I'm using mine older Win2 for PS360-era multiplatform PC titles, so I would gladly change mine for a new version )))

You have to find them, it's just a tiny gaming laptop meant to be used as a handheld i've never understood why they market it as a emulator machine, and not a steam machine, Honestly not worth it for emulators since there are cheaper raspberry pi 4 builds that can do the same thing but the GDPs are one of the better ways to play PC games on the go
Seems like a really neat device and powerful enough emulation for what I would be happy with. Maybe if it drops down to $400 range. :)

Honestly at this point I think if you have a tight budget but want PC/emulation on the go. The best choice is to wait.. now that cloud gaming is a thing 5g boasting a more reliable connection.. and phones just getting more powerful.. I would say just wait for a good 5g gaming phone.. then you have a new phone and a local or on the go streaming device that can also emulate anything and play the few good android games to boot.. at this point the only other option is to wait for a Gpd win 3 or some other windows portable device. Which the only benefit to that would be no spotty cloud problems and much less input lag compared to cloud gaming.
It's a great device, yet it is way too loud when under load. I had it for a half a year and sold it because it just got too loud and hot.
while the tech is undoubtedly really cool, the current price of $800 is a big no for a lot of people. That’s enough to buy a nintendo switch, wii u, 3DS, and all the games you could want to emulate

I bought a GPD Win 1 and after a year of light use the battery is defective and if it's not plugged in then it can turn off and reset at any time, otherwise still works and looks good. That cost me C$550.
Can buy a far more powerful phone that can do the exact same thing with higher rez display for actually cheaper
The cost is hugely inflated due to miniaturization in the components, and given it's a niche device, it isn't priced competitively. If you don't really need pocket-ability in a gaming device, this is a no-buy for sure.

@@joshua7426 for emulators, yes. For native windows games with a controller built-in, you can't. I doubt you'll see an android phone running fallout 4 or gta5 anytime soon.
Exciting stuff. For my money the best way to go is still to use a stretchy controller with my (high-end) phone. I already bought the phone, so it's not an added cost. The only drawback, as you mention, is that some high-end emulation is still better on Windows/x86 than on Android.

I recommend getting controller companion to just always be running in the background, and then never switch off of gaming mode. It's a much smoother experience, and there are more customization options.

Great review and AWESOME little handheld. It's buying a mini Windows 10 laptop that doubles as a very capable gaming device. At the current cost, it isn't on my shopping list. Hopefully the price will come down in the coming months.

I think emulating consoles that Nintendo doesn’t care about any more is ok but emulating and pirating Nintendo switch games is just wrong because you can easily still buy them and play them legally.
The 2GB max limit on SD Card is kinda nasty. was hoping it could read up to at least a 64GB. It'll act as your secondary storage for ROMs and whatnot.
