I am married don’t intend to get married again. my husband is wondering why am I watching this video😂
Haha! 😂❤️
Hahaha same here
No harm in fantasising a fictional situation 😂
😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣
My wife and I got married under the Special Marriages Act in 1974. We belonged to the same religion and our parents were witnesses. I would have expected the process to be more user friendly given all the changes over five decades. Unfortunately, the bureaucracy still makes it so challenging. The bureaucrats should be trained to be more courteous and encouraging of couples who are idealistic in that they are willing to think and act beyond their narrow walls of religion and ostentatious weddings. We do not want zealots and busybodies interfering with most personal of life's decisions. We have a long way to go.
nothing is more true
*special Marriage Act, 1954
@@Varun96490😂
Completely agreed on this
My husband and I got married in Special Marriage Act. We are both hindus but since we didn't plan on having any hindu ritual marriage, just a simple court marriage and a reception we had to opt for Special Marriage Act. We actually didnt have to go through all this hassle. We just went to a marriage registrar office one day and submitted everything and she took care of the rest. Then just one day we did the actual signing of the documents and its done. Received our marriage certificate within 1week via post.😀
Hi, I just wanted to know what sort of certificate u got?. Mine is a print out without any letter head just signatures and with title
I guess it didn't take that long because it wasn't inter religious marriage.
How much did the whole process cost?
If you are a woman then this is the most stupid decision of your life. You have no idea the kind of rights women have in matters of inheritance, custody and divorce under Hindu Marriage Act
Hello how can I do this?
Our marriage was solemnized by both hindu n christian rituals. We registered under this act. But it was in rural Tamilnadu as my husband's relatives arranged for everything. But when I went to sign, the registrar started making fuss that my parents also had to be there. They even took me separately to advice that love marriage doesn't work and i should go back to parents. My parents had taken a lot of leaves for both ceremonies and pre wedding, post wedding rituals and couldn't be there for registration. I had to show wedding pics, videos of my husband with my parents cutting cake and finally show my dad's passport proof and a call to get the registrar sign. Whew!
It's difficult even if both sides are willing. That was 11 years ago!
Oh gosh! How disappointing that the officials came to give you “personal advice” 😅
How did you arrive at the religious rituals you would be following in your lives and what religion your children follow?
@@SatshyaTharien He gave good advice.
Hello, didn't know someone went through the same trouble a me. Me and my husband are both Hindus and we got married as per Tamil rituals in temple. But guess what, I am Maharashtrian and even with the wedding card, photos and temple receipt were we got married the registrar was not satisfied. Registrar asked for both my parents to be there. Only my mom had come with me as my dad is no more, after which he asked for my dads death certificate to prove that no one objecting our marriage. This was all despite my in laws and my mother being present. 😓. But we could finally get it registered.
@@yadavmayu7 that is good due diligence on the part of the registrar.
Very informative video, done in a easy-to-understand way, without any legal terms. Loved it. And wish you a very happy married life.
Thank you 😊
Being an advocate I can confirm you explained it very well. Also the starting part where you mentioned how different religions have different marriage laws. Yes, in India there are few fields where religious personal laws are into force like the marriage, property inheritance and some land reforms and that's why the current govt is focusing on implementing uniform civil code i.e. one law across country that will cater all religions and sectors of people to ensure uniformity in process and low red tapism and remove the requirement of personal laws wherever possible under article 44 of the constitution. A nice way to educate your audience and promote court marriages as it is the most sensible thing. Just do a court marriage and maybe if you want throw a reception for all the fams and frnds. Also congratulations :)
Thank you :)

Haha I don’t think you can surprise anyone with a court marriage since you will need both your documents and presence in person 😄 but it’s not too difficult a process :)
The religious demographics of our country mean that the majority community in different states is different. Any socio political Majoritarian radical group can use this notice board and the private information of inter religious couples to harrass them and this is happening irrespective of the identity of the Majoritarian group in question. I have seen people circulating pictures of these notices on Twitter, Facebook tagging extremist organizations and calling for stopping the wedding. Therefore we need to be more nuanced and make the system easier for all inter religious couples by weeding out such steps which expose consenting adults in front of radical extremist groups.
Also the reason she didn't face any such harassment was because the socio political community in majority in Delhi didn't have any issue with the fact that a women of other faith was marrying into a favorable faith. All right wingers view women as transactional entity in such matters.
Even in traditional weddings invites are sent to people with the details. Wedding is not just a deal between two people, it is a social institution. Your family, relatives, friends need to know about your marriage.
@@MK-lh3xd wedding is a deal between two people in case of special marriage act marriage. In the document only the signature of the couple and two witness are present. Indian laws don't need consent of family members for wedding. Also parents don't own the individual liberty and autonomy of their adult children. Just like all adults decide the future of the nation by voting, similarly adults decide their own future by chosing whom to marry. This right isn't owned by parents or relatives.
@@gmaxi360 I didn't comment on autonomy. I was reacting to people saying it is a private matter.

Would be interesting to see a video on how you handle the religious differences within your marriage. Thank you for all the marriage content 😊
Yeah that' the main thing
Hindu man can marry anyone, the people who cry love jihad when hindu girl marries or goes with non hindu men will cherish when the guy is hindu and girl is non hindu.
Thank you 😄 I don’t think I’m ready to share that publicly since it involves details of someone else’s personal faith. Overall though I’d say the most important thing is to discuss everything ‘no matter how uncomfortable before you decide to get married, so you are both on the same page :)
@@SatshyaTharien Hindus won't have any problem when the guy is Hindu and the girl from non Hindu religion. Problem of moral policing occurs only when it's Hindu girl with non Hindu man. You definitely know this since you're a Mangalorean.
@@mukil371 Is there any point to discussing this here? Do you know them personally enough to understand whether they have a problem or not? Why do people feel the need to drag politics into everything.
Also, the biggest difference is that this notice clause is only for inter faith couples as per the Special Marriage Act - so it is quite discouraging and dangerous for a lot of couples!!!
Yeah! I hope that is removed soon
It is meant to act as a deterrent only. Very unfortunate to see this step.

Hi Satshya, Congratulations.
I have a question, when giving the notice, it is mandatory that both parties needs to be there? My fiance is from Ireland and it might be easier if the notice can be given by me alone or if not would this be possible through a lawyer??
Hi Elizabeth! Yes both parties need to be there because they need to verify your identity in person along with your documents :) but you can still double check with a lawyer
Hi...find the marraige registration ofc at your locality and rest of the formalities the register took care....ideally both parties dont need to be present when giving notice but bfr giving notice if your fiance is not Indian but a foreign citizen they hv to be living in d country for a minimum 30 days. So i guess if ur fiance is a foreign citizen he has to be present
I got married in dec under the special marraige act in West Bengal....the process was not that cumbersome...my husband is a US citizen....he just needed his driver's certificate, passport, visa n birth certificate... and i needed adhar card, age proof, n also 2 passport size photograph

Since we belong to different religions, this was the only way we could’ve gotten legally married in india so we had to do it anyway hehe :) but if you’re both from the same religion and want to avoid ceremonies I guess have a conversation with parents about why you don’t want to do it and want a simple thing instead :)

The notice board display thing is so scary - similar to banns being read out in church but much more public.
Q - do you think it would have been different based on the city you chose? Maybe Mangalore might have been different?
Thank you :) yeah I know! Atleast in church it’s among a community of people you know, but in a public space it’s quite scary 😟 regarding the second part - I don’t know, I’d like to think that all government offices are neutral & don’t make things difficult for people under the SMA. But it can be nerve wracking if one has for example, run away and trying to get married
The religious demographics of our country mean that the majority community in different states is different. The socio political power in the hands of for example the muslim community in srinagar would be very different from that in shimla just because of their percentage of population. Similarly the socio political power of a religious community xyz by virtue of their demography will be very different in meghalaya compared to say that in delhi because of their percentage in these states. Any socio political Majoritarian radical group can use this notice board and the private information of inter religious couples to harrass them and this is happening irrespective of the identity of the Majoritarian group in question. Therefore we need to be more nuanced and make the system easier for all inter religious couples by weeding out such steps which expose consenting adults in front of radical extremist groups.
There are pictures of these notices circulated on twitter, Facebook tagging various right wing organizations calling for stopping these weddings between consenting adults. People need to speak out about this problematic step as it limits the free choice and privacy of adults.
@@SatshyaTharien well said and it was good to see you speaking out despite personally not being affected by this invasion of privacy. Also the fact that you had your parents as witness made it easier. That other man had to spend 25k because his wedding was the more "revolutionary" If I can say so. Just because of the socio political climate of the nation. Very unfortunate to see this. Hopefully this step will be eliminated sometime in future, I have seen so many pictures being circulated by radical people on social media of these notices calling for stopping the wedding between consenting adults.
Its same for everyone. SMA is applicable for all India.

Thanks for sharing. Were you able to solemnize your marriage on the first day itself you went to the court or did it take multiple iterations?
So the first day you go to court (the office) is to apply for it - and then they tell you when you can come to solemnise the marriage - it will be mostly a month after applying
Love is sacred according to Puranas, Abhimanyu's story and many of Lord Krishna's deeds are good examples of this. However, our last few previous generations considered it as sacrilegious.
My only advice for Loving couples is to value their promises and don't ruin other bonds in the process. We are lucky to be born in India where family takes care of us while sacrificing their happiness. Remember that both our life partner and our parents are our responsibility and no reason can be given to escape from it.
