In this episode I discuss the the genre-breaking 1986 album by Public Image Ltd. simply entitled, Album. I touch upon the radical line-up shifts that lead to this album's superstar cast of musicians, and how it subsequently created not just how Pil operated for the rest of the decade but how it was influential on "alternative" rock as a whole. Please enjoy!

I'm catching up with your videos because I've been ok the road but this one is great!
Thanks for watching and welcome back!! Glad you enjoyed the video and I greatly appreciate it!
God, you got me pumped to listen to Album. Bill Laswell's output with collaborators often frustrates me for reasons I can't quite articulate, but I always check it out because he was the core of a fascinating cast of characters. Didn't realize he was involved with PIL, but makes perfect sense.
Yeah, I'm not a really huge fan of Laswell in general, clearly a huge ego there, but he delivered the goods with this one haha
@@richtalksrecords yes he really came through with PIL. I will say his work with Praxis & Painkiller was pretty intriguing
Another one I want to check out is Killing time by the band he was in with Fred Maher(!) called Massacre. Bill's Box Of Sound talked about it, and it sounds really cool
The second half was even better than the first half. My favorite video of yours yet. I especially loved when you talked about where Lydon came from and his open-mindedness when it came to music and his collaborators. I also didn't know much about the tour for that album, so I found all that stuff very interesting at the end. Looking forward to when you tackle PIL's earlier albums in the future...!!
Thank you again, Edwin!! Here are some more fun facts in regards to Lydon and music
1- pre Sex Pistols he was Lemmy's amphetamine sulfate dealer. One of them at least haha
2- Loves early Black Sabbath, referred to the Paranoid album as a "stonker"
3- Declared a journalist stupid when they argued that Physical Graffiti wasn't Led Zeppelin's best album
4- Used to hitchhike across the British countryside to attend festivals to see favorites like Free and Hawkwind
5- Kinks and T Rex obsessive
6- (You'll appreciate this) one of his favorite songs of all time?? Massachusetts by The Bee Gees!
7- In "Songs Nirvana Taught Us" fashion, he kicked off my entire fandom of Kate Bush who he's a massive fan of
8- First record he ever bought was the 45 of Kenny Rogers' Ruby, Don't Take Your Love To Town
@@richtalksrecords Wow. A lot of that I didn't know (the Lemmy connection for example). Of course he was also a huge Alice Cooper fan, but you must've assumed I already knew that. 😉 The more I hear about Lydon's music taste, the more I like the guy! It makes sense: great artists aren't created in a vacuum. And this goes against the misconception that Lydon is just some snotty provocateur (like you discussed in your video).
I know it's days later, but still haha. Oh God yeah, I figured that you knew all about the Alice Cooper connection!! I used to be really surprised (from The Doors to Slade to Janet Jackson) when it turned out Lydon actually LIKED something, but again as I said in the video, when he was still in The Sex Pistols he mentioned Neil Young and Van Der Graaf Generator and bang, Neil Young in the "godfather of punk", and most articles from the time mention that he's ripping off Peter Hammill's vocal style. That has got to be incredibly frustrating, especially when you're so young. So, I get it. And while he's great at being a snotty provocateur, as you know a) who cares without great music/art and b) there's SO much more! Anyway, really glad that you enjoyed this one, and I hope you enjoy his book
Halfway through the video and it's great as always. I'm thrilled you started with Album because that's actually my favorite PIL album (although I love all their albums and John Lydon just as a personality and living-breathing monkeywrench to anything lame and inauthentic). I also prefer PIL to the Pistols, which I know would make Lydon happy. Of course I also prefer the Professionals to the Pistols, so I might be wrong...!!
Edwin, as always thank you for watching!! Not surprised that a record as left field, creative, and “small c” catholic in its tastes would be your favorite! While I obviously prefer The Sex Pistols to The Professionals, they were no slouch, and Black Leather is absolutely awesome
