    Thank you for shining a light on this truly monumental album of musical history. All rules broken, a courageous reinvention breaking away from the cocoon of punk the one John found himself in: saw that it was a dying corpse. Just look at the puppets that he left behind covering trad rock n roll songs and the saddest story of Sid’s demise
    Thank you John for fronting two of the best England ever produced.

    Your best video yet and I'm with you on this amazing debut and I don't understand why it's not a bigger deal. I mean, it's really THE Post Punk statement IMO. I love Metal Box but I think this album is even stronger (it battles Album for my favorite PIL album). And really what sounded like this before this album? I also love Magazine, but the way I see the genesis of Post Punk is as follows: Station To Station opened the door. Magazine walked trough that door. PIL ran through the door and turned everything upside in the house. And I love the parallel between Eddie Van Halen and Keith Levene: they both established how 1980s guitar was going to sound. And man, was I shocked to learn -- from your video -- how young and green Jah Wobble was on bass! You wouldn't know it from hearing his bass on those first two PIL albums: "all action" indeed. And IMO just as innovative and stylistically influential as what Levene was doing: think about how bass sounded before and after in modern rock thanks to what Wobble was doing. Or to put it another way: if guitarists like the Edge were biting from Levene, bassists like Adam Clayton were biting from Wobble. And then there's John: one of the greatest frontmen and maverick artists ever and you're spot on about him as well. I also really liked the comparison between him and Ice Cube: LOTS of similarities between them. Anyway, thanks for schooling me further on this great musical force. I love this detailed focus of what this incarnation of the band was doing by year. Looking forward to 1979 and all that low end on the horizon...!!

      I enjoyed reading your well presented comment. Of course album liking is a purely personal preference, so I can't make you think otherwise: just as with food, you like what you like. I also liked your album name-checking for 'post punk'. That was very mainstream naming of you. Of course, there's plenty of 'underground' artists (probably German) who trod the post punk track well before Bowie even considered Station To Station (and he probably got the idea from them, too). Yes, Lydon is a maverick, most freethinking people are., but I'm surprised you didn't know about Wobble's novice status as a bassist (I thought it was a well-known tidbit), but there you go, I guess. Levene's playing was/is so original that of course it'd be a benchmark for any new sound ie: The Edge has made a career from using Levene's style (without the merest suggestion of an acknowledgement or a thanks). But for me (and the many), Metal Box/Second Issue will remain their seminal 'breakthrough' composition (akin to MBVs LOVELESS)

    This might be one of my favourite UA-cam videos ever, there’s something about that 1978 era of P.I.L, just that first record that does soemthing to me, the band & line up, the video for Public Image, the Rainbow gigs & even the photos taken. Just something so different & yet so fresh

    I still consider bands such as Siouxsie & the Banshees, Wire, The Pop Group, The Fall, & even The Strangles as having the first post punk albums. Of course, we can go back to Brian Eno, Peter Hammill, etc.

      I personally think it's Magazine, which a number of people politely disagreed with (see the comments on my Magazine video) haha. And yeah, Brian Eno, Van Der Graaf Generator, perhaps Nico, some of Cale's stuff are all definitely part of the discussion. As long as it's not reduced to "PiL ripped off Can", I tend to agree!

      @@richtalksrecords I loved Magazines first 3 albums, but The Banshees and Wire were pushing the boundaries of Punk before PiL came along. Then there are other lesser known acts The Table, The Prefects, etc.

    Bro I’m a long time rotten fan and tried listening to this album on several occasions and it’s crap. I’m a big post punk fan, the first Wire album pink flag now THATS a stunning album!! Even metal box most of it is mindless drivel to me. I’ll keep trying.

    • @richtalksrecords
      @richtalksrecords  8 місяців тому +1

      First of all, thank you for watching and commenting!! And I totally agree about Wire. I would say the first three albums are basically perfect. As for this album, we all have our different opinions, which is the point. There are tons of beloved albums and groups that I have absolutely no interest in. I think what matters is that you've tried listening with an open mind. And who knows, maybe it'll work for you at some point!

      That Wire album is a combination of punk, rock, art rock and rock. Tough to call it post punk since it's from 1977. Just my opinion.

    *As great as early PiL undoubtedly were, I wouldn't go so far as to say they were 'iconoclastic'. Sure, they affronted most listeners with their approach, but I wouldn't say they purposely went out to 'offend' as many ears as possible. They merely played music that they enjoyed. If that's iconoclastic, then so is every child that's bashed tin pots to make a sound. Lydon is a perspicacious chap, but I won't feed his ego by suggesting he's manning the barricades of some imaginary revolution. He's always seemed to do as he pleases, and if others enjoy it, so much the better. He's far from Einstein or Neil deGrasse Tyson, just a freethinking intellectual (which he'd pretend to despise being labelled). But let's not forget that Levene and Wobble were intrinsic to their sound, also. The 'forgotten' heroes of PiL, who fortunately (or unfortunately) saw the lie of the land per Lydon and thought best to 'leave' the 'corporation' before it was far too late*
