Couple of friends worked on metal box at Wessex and townhouse studio for rehearsals, then onto Virgins The Manor to record the album. I still regret not going sick for a day and going with them.

Thank you very much!! I will be doing PiL 1980 & 1981 either at the end of this year or the start of January 2025. I haven’t figured out yet how I want to divide up those videos but it’s definitely on the schedule. Then at some point later next year, I will cover 1982 & 1983, the whole Commercial Zone period etc. The goal is to eventually make videos for everything up to and including That What Is Not. Still a long way off from figuring out how I want to cover the later period albums. So, I ask for your patience, because when the time comes I plan on going as deep with Flowers Of Romance as I did with the first two albums! I absolutely LOVE that album, and the various unreleased tracks and B-sides from then are all gems as well

A GRAND-SLAM KNOCKOUT OF A REVIEW...AS MONUMENTAL AS ITS SUBJECT MATTER!!!
It has been said , that if the Monolith in Kubricks' movie "2001" was a vinyl record album, then it would be the PIL masterwerk " Metal Box". A work so monumental and of such gravitas that it sucks all, music, critical art history and theory into it. There is a good argument for it being not only the pivotal post punk album, but one of the greatest albums in music, up there with Miles Davis, Coltrane, Hendrix The Beatles White album etc ( with lyrics by Samuel Beckett) and thus one of the great artistic achievements and statements of the late 20th century. Certainly I have known academics that have wrote about " Metal Box" in such terms for their final papers at University. In this review Rich does the album justice in the way ( perhaps the only way) that such a monumental album deserves, by serving up a mammoth 3 hour 43 minute investigation into the background and making of such a sprawling piece of art. Diving deep into every detail and providing us with personal insights into the power and significance of the album. Which would all be academic if the music wasn't any good...as it turns out the music is of course FANTASTIC...as is Richs' overview. 3 plus hours well spent, and like the album a monumental piece of work !

Finished this epic video which transcends to art at its finest moments. I feel like your review style is similar to Levene's guitar playing: perpetually restless and roaming yet always hitting the mark with punctuated authority. And speaking of authority, you're shaping up to be THE PIL guy on UA-cam. 😉👍🏼Oh, and don't sweat not gifting me the Fugs box-set: I don't currently have a CD player if you can believe that: it's either vinyl or digital downloads for me!

The tv programme you were talking about June 1979 was called Granada reports a regional north west news programme where tony Wilson worked (as in factory records tony Wilson)
I watched the programme I think they played either death disco or no birds or possibly both. After the interview with tony Wilson he then quickly organised the factory gig the same night hence no rehearsal.
The 1 minute interview you mentioned is not this that was an Australian interview
    Hope this helps
By the way I went to the Leeds sci fi gig sept 1979.
A year later I took my concert stub and got the train to lydons family home in Finsbury Park and his dad signed it for me
    How’s that for a story

    • @richtalksrecords
      @richtalksrecords  7 місяців тому

First of all thank you for watching and commenting!! I tried to find the June 1979 footage, but couldn't, which is a shame since there's a great Tony Wilson hosted program with Howard DeVoto and Pete Shelley on youtube that I love watching. The Australian interview, I knew wasn't right when I was saying it, and honestly I meant to just edit that part out of the video completely. I want to say that I found out that it was filmed in possibly early 1980. And that is an absolutely amazing story! What do remember of the Leeds gig? I wish there was footage of it, or at least more than the 2 photos I've seen. And, what was Mr Lydon like?! I remember John saying something to effect once of "if you think I'm a piece of work, you should see him"

      Hi
      I don’t know that quote.
I was a 16 year old and went on the train and had to stay over in the hall until next morning.
Lydon sang with his back to the audiance for alot of the gig due to bottle being thrown and hitting Levine
If you ever heard the gig on UA-cam you will hear Keith angrily telling the person his displeasure.
Wobble sat in armchair all night
Before no birds they all huddled up and had discussion then you hear lydon say shut up where wasting time .
I remember tony Wilson introducing j division I liked them from very early days a lot
Of people were still unfamilar with j d in sept 79.
I went to see pil in I think 2010/11 at Preston 53 degrees
I worked in Preston saw I took half a day off and went up to the hall - waiting hours and hours my intention was to give him the signed by his dad futurism’s Leeds 79 concert stub.
After about 5 hours in pouring rain and blacked out Mercedes
Pulled up , security cordoned it off but me and about 7 others avoided that .
So lydon and Rambo got out
There was a line of about 7 of us inbetween the car and stage door I was last with ticket in hand.
The first guy pulls out something and says can you sign this to which lydon
Says no and walk past us like
      An arrogant pig.
After that I sold my ticket on eBay, my original metal box
      And most of my Memrobilia
Lost all respect for the guy
      Hope you like that story
You can tell it on UA-cam that
      Be great.

Pps I will give you another pil story you will enjoy.
Went to Preston guildhall May 86 first song Kashmir.
Anyway after gig I got my car and brought it round to where
The tour bus was with intention of following it
As I always wanted a proper conversation with lydon.
Anyway eventually the tour bus set off with me in pursuit
It headed out of town going the opposite way to wear I live
I continued following , I was just about to give up when suddenly it came of the motorway (interstate)
      And into a small town
I could see a hotel and bus parking up
As I was a little behind by the
Time I got parked they had gone into the hotel
I sped into the foyer just as
The lift doors were shutting with lydon heading to his room.
I looked around and in the bar area was John mc geoch and rest of the band.
I went to say hello and explained I had followed them from the gig
He invited me to sit down and salad lydon had gone upstairs
To phone his wife and would be down soon - he had bought lydon a pint of lager that was
Sat there waiting for him to come down.
      Can you imagine my excitement
To cut a long story lydon never
Appeared so I drank his pint
Well some of it, I accidentally
Knocked half of it over John mc geoch how embarrassing .
Anyway had picture with mc geoch which has got lost somewhere
Nice to tell these stories keeps
      Them alive from better days.
      Chris from the united kingdom
