Movies for Mom and Dad
Cinemassacre please do another YOU KNOW WHAT’S BULLSHIT?!
When NC gonna be guest in AVGN episode? I mean... You make a lot of apperence in his show! Why he newer show up in yours?
You guys nailed how to do sponsorship stuff I think
Hey bro can you please review a NES title called INFILTRATOR i found it in my parents basement and i was hoping you could talk about it
I like to imagine that occasionally when James is feeling down, he watches a tape in that room so he feels like he’s working at a video store.
That's what I'd do.
@@louise6093 anyone watching this would, methinks
Throw some mothballs around, put on some white noise of people talking together, and fill a big plastic cup with diet pepsi, and just lean back.
@@ryanjavierortega8513 don't say methinks
@@KevinLuper99 Methinks mayhaps a nerve hast been struck.
I miss the smell of walking into a video store. Idk how to explain it, they had their own smell though...the smell of the weekend
I know exactly what you're referring to. Blockbuster video in particular had a pleasant, almost calming smell. I don't know if it was the candy and popcorn along with all the plastic or what, or if they pumped some special odor into the store but virtually all of them had that familiar friendly comforting smell.
I indeed miss that and am sad my sons won't experience it for themselves because our local Family Video does not have that smell...
The smells were stuffy. Like dusty old room.
The divine smell of wood paneling and hot plastic
Oh man. So true. Your comment suddenly brought back the memory of that unique smell.
U should have smelled the adult video stores, now that's a smell you'll never forget.
OMG I remember the decision paralysis while in a Blockbuster, when they would have like an entire wall set up for the hot new release and none were in stock, then you didn't know what you wanted.
Also I remember as a young teen, checking out Lifeforce, the clerk said "you know this isn't about the NES game", i replied "Yeah but it's got a naked chick" He gave me an affirmative nod and checked it out to me
I never get tired of the "movies for mom and dad!" bit 😂
Who else remembers seeing video rental stores inside of department stores like roses or grocery stores like Kroger?
There's a tiny lil IGA market up in Gladwyn, MI that still rents out games and movies. (truth be told, I'm not sure they've changed the lineup in like 10 years)
I do. That was all we had where I lived. Even the smallest mom and pop store had a rental section. It gave me a reason to always tag along when Mom had to go to the store.
@@stitchfinger7678 Yup... I remember the local IGA had a rental spot. Great times.
Our Kroger did here in Dayton OH
there was a convince store/pharmacy near my house that had a video rental section that i use to get things from
The 90’s were honestly an amazing time. I’m so glad I was fortunate enough to grow up in that decade.
Be kind, please rewind
Damn i feel old now.
@@thatonea-hole Me too.
Listening to the one dude talking about how they had to buff up the scratched DVDs had me thinking it's actually WORSE than VHS as far as maintenance goes for the clerks. With VHS, ok, so they're not rewound, just put them in a rewinder and you're done. But with DVDs, I doubt it was an automatic process.
We used to get a bunch of unrewound tapes back in our drop box or when customers would drop and run. So frustrating when you had movies people wanted to rent and they were all the way at the end and not rewound.
@@aidanumpherson make that three
And also from the other side after working at Movie Gallery from
06-10(when MG went bankrupt), my best memories were interacting with customers and bullshitting about movies and games. My manager and I were also big fans of the Nerd and Critic so this is pretty cool seeing you guys having this discussion together.
James has a soft respectful honesty in his reviews. It's good to see the Nostalgia Critic leave persona. Usually, it feels like he should be accompanied by sock puppets.
I agree. I like James' movie reviews better than his AVGN reviews where he has a different personality and makes childish jokes.
I remember my grade school using laser disks for presentations.
Special guest Doug changes everything in a goodway!! Video rental in grocery stores was sweet...the Kieran cut away was great
Some of my favourite creators in one video on my second favourite Cinemassacre series!! Great way to end a Friday!
When i was 10 my mom took me and my friend to a family video and we rented the Leprechaun and Darkman. Good times . . .
When i was like 5 in 92, we had a small video store that had vhs or nes games: 4 for 4 days for $4! It was an amazing deal and we'd do it every friday
Another great video, gents! I have so many fond memories of video stores. What a great time it was to be a movie fan.
I can't believe you guys didn't talk about renting VHS and copying them. My dad had a friend that did it for us all the time. 3/4 of my movie collection growing up was copied from movies we rented. It was the pre Napster, lol.
Thanks for the memories guys. Lots of memories going to blockbusters and the smaller local video store picking random movies. I was born 1975.
My dad used to take me to Video Biz, a small family owned video store in a strip mall in KC. We used to spend hours in there chatting, watching whatever movie was playing from their comfy sofa, looking at movies and nes games. Those were the days, even though the nes games were hard as dogshit baking in the desert sun for months.
I love Doug and James. My two favorites since 2006.
Mr. Vega That’s around the time I got hip to AVGN ... though I think he started in 2003.
I remember going to blockbuster, those were the days
@irish rover true
When you were an infant?
True..,😎
@@Darqboii yep, im just familiar with it cuz I used to go there

I remember as a child my parents renting the real
Ghostbusters vhs for me and I for the life of me couldn’t figure out why it wasn’t working.. low and behold the film was absent from the cassette! Major bummer
Dude.... I forgot grocery stores used to rent movies. Ours was a little section by the deli that has since been re-purposed for seasonal things.
lilkoolaidman93 I work at a grocery store and I remember my parents working there as a kid and I would occasionally get movies and games from them. There are a number of these stores around sadly all of the rentals closed down, the store I work in rental store was repurposed and turned into a cricket store.
Those movie sections have been converted to the liquor area.
Those were some of the best spots to rent from. Always far cheaper then BlockBusters. And you never quite knew what might show up, there. Heck. My local one was still renting Tengen's Tetris...after the point when the recall made them super expensive.
Same.
Yeah. Ours was a little section up front by the customer service desk. That grocery store is now a dollar store. RIP.
I remember our local store got like 15 super Mario brothers 3, and they were always rented out, went there for like 2 weeks straight and never got to rent a copy so finally gave up and asked for it for Christmas
The Bombfell add was funny as hell! Other youtubers should take notes!
My favourite behind the curtain title? "Hoke Us Poke Us".
what about 'Good Will Humping'...
@@randombarbarian5637 Too much Matt Damon lookalike, not enough Sarah Jessica Parker lookalike. Otherwise, 7/10, well played!
I remember our local store called Movie Mania. It was a mom and pop store, and it was around forever. I remember actually renting original Nintendo games from them, lol! For movies my mom would always take me to the Rental store each weekend. She would let me rent whatever I wanted, as long as a half naked girl wasn't on the cover. Those were amazing times!
DVDs are what killed video rental for me. Sucked big time to have the movie studder and freeze at the same spot due to scratches. Then you have to drive back to exchange it and half the time they didn't have another copy in-stock.
I miss the video store experience. Everyone had VHS tapes. Grocery stores , gas stations.
I want to see more of James and Brad!
"I remember this,i was there when it happened" lmao
I live in Oregon and I remember there was a place called Hollywood video when I was really really young I remember going there with my mom almost every week
I always liked instruction manuals that included character/story descriptions. I used to get excited about seeing a thick manual, then the Wii just started having the same dry manual in 3 different languages. That was when my childhood died.
I still have a rental store in my hometown, they rent dvd's mostly
I remember being about 5 or 6 and renting what I thought was a Real Ghostbusters tape. Instead it was Ghostbusters 2 and Vigo scared the living shit out of me!
Dang, i used to hit up hollywood video everyday. Buying the old games from their GameCrazy area. 🤘🤘🤘🤘
I used to love walking around video stores. We had a blockbuster, but I never went to it. For me, it was “Hollywood Video” and “Showtime.” Also, a local mom & pop place called “Top Gun Video,” but I don’t remember it as well as the others, because it went out of business when I was still pretty young.
I remember one day, I think it was the year 2003, I couldn’t decide what to get. I kept walking around the store, and on the TV’s at the store, they were playing a Spongebob DVD of all the “spooky episodes.” I think it was October. I walked and watched/listened through that DVD twice before finally renting “About Schmidt.”
Justin is underrated.
Man, so great. Hanging out with friends and strangers, talking about movies and such. Online killed that. I love shopping online more than I thought I would. I do miss the stores though.
It's so awesome having 2 of my favorite channels together in one video. Yeah!
There was a mom and pop store in a small strip around the corner from my neighborhood. An old strip that's still there. The video store is long gone but I remember
I absolutely love this episode. It's awesome! Don't ever stop making these. Awesome it's CM, CS and NC!
Here's another fact you might miss about the video stores you could rent out video games and see what they were like instead of paying 70 to 100 dollars or pounds on a game you or the family doesn't like especially if you download it and can't get your money back
I had an over $100 late fee for Gex 2 on PSX at Blockbuster once. I never went back to that Blockbuster.
There's a video rental here in Tucson, Casa Video, which survived by being a video rental place/bar :POtherwise my mother and I frequented our Blockbuster for years up until it went out of business. Amusingly that building's been vacant for years, and still has the return door there...It was always fun to see what Asylum movies made it there though :P
i worked next to a blockbuster i could go there anytime i miss that.
Nestle Buncha Crunch was the candy I most remember.
Buncha Crunch was DANK
We had a Hollywood video which was VERY successful, until Netflix and GameFly. A mom and pop rental place which survived up until a few years ago. Blockbuster showed up in our town for a couple years but was a small place, couldn’t compete with Hollywood video. We also had a small rental place pop up in Kroger, they always had oddball movies and some decent games. Fun times, but hard to beat the internet era.
Lol I just noticed that not only they are walking backwards at 2:05, but even the sound of their steps is backwards!
We have a store in my area (around my area) called Time Capsule. They put on Facebook earlier this year they were doing a flea market style grab bag over 2 weekends with 1 dollar movies! VHS & DVD! So I went in. So many great movies to look at, check out & purchase. So we got a bunch & it was so worth it. I miss that. There needs to be more places for VHS buyers. Hell, even DVD is becoming obsolete.
Shoutout to “Downtown Video” in Jacksonville, TX RIP
James needs to do something with Oddity Archive, that guy knows about old video formats that even I havent heard of.
I love paying for youtube and still getting commercials! Thanks!
Great video. Can you do a review on “The Wizard”?
It was already done along with super Mario Bros 3
@@jeremybowen5977 yeah, but with them as a group and more of a discussion.
I love the power glove... it's so bad - Lucas
I based the character Ray from Ray in the 64 Bit Dimension on Jimmy Woods from the Wizard. He's also partially based on Alex from the Last Starfighter.
Cali- fooorniaa..
31:50 This story plays out all the time at the library, too.
Thanks for making this video, you guys bought back some amazing memories of renting and working at a video shop. Worked in Blockbuster and a local little shop too, miss both!
My most interesting Rental Store experience: when I was a kid I rented the movie Friday. I didn't want to return it, so I unscrewed the VHS case, removed the tape and spools, and transferred it to a different case. I replaced the tape with the Michael Keaton movie Jack Frost, and returned it to the video store. I still have the VHS that's labeled Jack Frost but it's actually Friday.
I still remember renting F-Zero X from Blockbuster for my 10th birthday. Had a fantastic time with friends.
I really missed Blockbuster video stores
I still miss them. Why did you stop missing them?
@@seanhart9706 Because renting movies is everyone's specialty
i think theres a Blockbuster video store that is still going somewhere in Alaska
@@lunapawspurr8016 there 6 of them in Alaska 2 of them in Oregon and 1 in Texas that's 9 Blockbuster locations left
@@alexanderwells4402 Damn i should move to Alaska
i got a movie form a garage sale once and it was in a blockbuster case with the blockbuster logo on the inside. so cool. i still have it
The mom and pop video rental store I went to outlived Blockbuster.
the library rental program reminds me of those good o days of mom n pop stores
I remembered nearly getting into a fight with the manager of Hollywood video for bullying my nephew. Had to call the store owner but all she did was put him on record and gave me a coupon. Then there was the blockbuster experience where the cashier critic my choice in movies. That's the rental stores problem. Customer service. I don't miss rental stores or their late fees. Of course I never had that problem in mom and pop rental stores.
I remember at a Hollywood video. The return box was out of order in the winter time.
I remember my FF7 disc 3 was scratched to hell and wouldn't work.. and Hollywood Video or whichever store it was didn't have their labels yet on their discs.. So I rented a copy and returned them my disc 3.. lol. Dickmove, I know. I'm ashamed of myself. :P
You are a legend xD
Lol did it alot actually
Everybody did this :)
@GalleryOFSuicide oh, ok.
You know, there's a lot of good that happens in the world too. It's not healthy to get upset about the small things. And I'm not saying that you are upset, but I do think you should practice a little on ignoring things that you don't like instead of ranting about it. Trust me, that helps me from not murdering people.
i used to work at a video store and can vouch for him. people like that suck
family video still exists to this day in michigan. I visited family a few months ago and went inside. It was so weird cause its like nothing has changed.
Bookseller video in Elyria Ohio was the best place to go to rent movies as a kid.
The guy with the glasses and backwards hat, he knows his stuff. I could listen to him for hours. A restocking fee? what bullshit.
one of my memories is being around 13 or 14, my dad tells me to go down to blockbuster, says "Get me 'Doom' the one with the rock on the cover, and you can get whatever you would like for yourself. Simple enough. Hop on my bike, ride down and im looking for this movie, Doom. Now i thought i was looking for something with a giant rock on the cover, i walk right by the movie like 20 times and im freaking out because i dont see one with a rock or anything, finally i go up to this guy at the counter and ask about it. he takes me to the section, which has a giant poster which says THE ROCK on it above the doom movies. im so embarrassed i get the movie, forget i could get myself something, turn around and go back in. i think i got the game MERCENARIES or whatever. ended up playing the demo on doom for doom 3 on the original xbox way more though
Kieran's story reminds me why I stopped going to Blockbuster. We'd rented Turok for the N64 and returned it on time. Maybe a week later a person at Blockbuster calls and tells us we owe them money for never returning Turok. Of course we told them they're mistaken and refuse to pay them anything. A few days later there's a call saying that the copy had magically showed up in the store, but we still owed them money. I still suspect an employee ran off with the game instead of properly checking it in.
My mom swiped all the n64 games from her blockbuster when I was a kid.
We went weekly as a family browsing was fun we have a local indie that still survives that I visit a few times a year
We still have a local video store amazingly. It's called flick video, in Marion NC.
I only went to Blockbuster a few times. I loved a place called Prime Time Video in Lakeland, Florida. It looked very much like the wooden panel walls we see in your videos.
I still remember the smell of the place (those strawberry air fresheners in a can) and I loved the smell of the plastic VHS cases.
Instead of account cards, they had code words and mine was Tremors. 😂
I accidentally rented Faces Of Death at West Coast Videos and played it to my parents.
What?! LMAO! I used to have to download those and when my parents found them I'd get grounded...
Meanwhile my mom suggested me to watch it LOL
That "movie" was stupid.
I remember renting games from some of the smaller rental stores in Milwaukee and the instructions were probably 50/50 original instructions and copies - like someone actually had the foresight to photocopy the instruction manuals. Although every so often a game wouldn't come with the instructions and I remember renting something like Bubble Bobble and the guy put in a copy of like Airwolf and he said 'game plays the same as this, controls are the same' LOL It was so random and has stuck with me for like 30 frickin' years.
My family never really rent videos at a video store, we usually just buy them bootlegged. But I do remember going to a Blockbuster like before it close down I believe a year after, I was always looking through the horror stuff and I was introduced to Puppet Masters Vs Demonic Toys. Since then I quite enjoy Puppet Masters and was watching more of them
That's the worst back in the eighties when you could'nt pick a video and be there FOREVER searching hahaha
Bombfell sounds so cool, I have to check it out before even watching the video.
Back in the day, there was a building that was shared with McDonalds and blockbuster and now it's shared with McDonald's and nail salon🙄
Ahaha fast times at ridgemont high the pool scene had the marks
I remember when the closest blockbuster was a few miles away, then about 2 years before I left the neighborhood a blockbuster opened on the intersection of the street I lived on and the boulevard. a few minute walk
I used to work in a video store. We got away with a lot of crap we used to play Sam Kinison and George Carlin videos on the stores tv's during business hours.

The closest thing to a rental store now is redbox or a public library

Ultra CNC . It kind of depends on what you think the purpose of a library is.
If you think it's just a place to hold books of knowledge, then yes you are mostly correct. Though Libraries have been traditionally more than just sources of non-fiction literature.
However if you think the purpose is to collect, preserve and share with the community it serves; the knowledge, information and artistic tales of society and civilization than your view is a bit narrow.
The technologies and mediums of society have changed quite a bit in the last 100 years.
There’s a Hollywood video in my city but besides that I haven’t seen another video store in almost eight years

It's nice seeing The Angry Video Game Nerd & The Nostalgia Critic out-of-character & literally being themselves, not as The Nostalgia Critic & The Angry Video Game Nerd.
I miss when they'd have employee pick sections. Could always tell a lot about the employees that way. And when I found someone whose picks I always liked, I'd love seeing something new. "Oooo, is that a Tom pick? Gotta rent that." I think there's a Seinfeld episode about this.
There is.
And Weekend at Bernie's 2 was one of the picks...
My mother actually worked as the manager of a local video store back when I was a child. Sometimes she would take me to work and I can remember playing in the store. Other days she would setup a game console (because they rented those out too) for me and I’d sit and play games while she worked. I was quite young so I don’t have the same types of memories as these guys did. But I can still say I have fond childhood memories of my local video store. :)
