Just like Alfred, he knows just what to do in any situation. "Ah well, my master/mistress got in deep shit again. Time to go kick some ass in a dignified manner."
MutterBilk Miscuit what about how casual he is about getting ready to deal with the assault team? He’s just strolling getting the shotgun and the bulletproof vest cus he knows Lara is having a wonderful time playing with them.
Lara is a character that... really doesn’t need a motivation to go on adventures. Honestly, it’d be far more difficult to find a believable reason for her to _not_ be swinging over waterfalls in the Amazon rainforest.
Agreed, Lara's motivation for going on adventures in pyramids and jungles is more or less the same motivation I have for opening up steam and playing a game. "I'm bored, this is what I do for fun."
In the very first Tomb Raider game, if I remember correctly, there's an opening cutscene where the villain tries to pay her to hunt for treasure and Lara rejects the offer, stating "I only play for sport". Which prompts the villain to change the offer from a cash incentive to a dangerous and wild enough place to pique Lara's interest.
She never wanted to set foot in the Amazon after learning of him being swallowed whole by that giant anaconda....I WISH that was actually movie-cannon LOL!
Zodia195 - I've watched a bunch of the behind-the-scenes stuff and it's really cool when the two of them are sitting next to each other with Angelina saying basically that it was nice, being able to react to him naturally - it didn't feel like acting, because she's more afraid of losing her dad than she'll readily admit - so to her, Lara's quest to get closer to her dad, and maybe bring him back is genuine. And he just put his arm around her shoulders after that. It's nice that for all the goofy shit she did, her dad's always had her back, tried to get her cleaned up and happy.
Max Dresser I think the problem with British actors doing American accents is they try too hard to actually say the R sound or say “last” instead of “lahst.” Similarly, I think Americans doing British accents try to imitate the Queen’s proper accent when England has several different British accents.
@@kryoruleroftheninthcircleo4151 I love how you point how how Britain has multiple English accents, but forget there are many different American accents as well. To say how an American chooses one accent despite doing it well is kind of dumb. That's like getting mad at someone for choosing one specific impression of Robin Williams, even though you could do any kind but they chose the one they wanted. Many British people do still have proper English accents, you know.
Considering how Lara Croft was depicted in the 90's, the movie is actually consistent with the source material and Angelina Jolie was the best actress that could have portrayed the character. I would have preferred a film adaptation of the TR1 PlayStation game plot and a bit more focus on the atmospheric aspects of her actually raiding tombs. If they had gone more in a direction of Indiana Jones and less action focused, and maybe some subtle horror elements, I think it could have done well and been more faithful to the franchise's original premise. Could have been better, but could have been much worse. I don't care what anyone says, THIS is the real Lara Croft for me. Adrenaline junkie, flirty, stoic, fearless, impossibly good at everything she does. Honestly I agree with Doug. Both it and Cradle of Life (please review it next) are suitably ridiculous in that way Tomb Raider is, and amazingly captures the spirit of the games amazingly well. Hell as snobby as Roger Ebert was, he actually gave both these flick 3/4 stars. Dumb, but fun, and don't forsake or disrespect the lore it's based on.
Though I find both entertaining, I think Cradle of Life is the better film. Still plenty of fun action set-pieces and stunts, but a bit more focus on the characters, and a bit less of the dated late 90s/early 2000s visual cliches. Also, the mystical artifact of the week is less confusing, and they dialed back Jolie's bra padding.
Ebert was pretty well known for meeting a film on the level it was trying to reach. It's the reason he's elevated over most critics. I'd hardly use the word snobby to describe the guy, especially if you actually read his reviews to see which movies he embraces and why.
I personally think that of all of the video game movies out there (many of which are bad), this 1 is good enough to be in the top 10. That said, does anybody out there know of 9 others that are good enough to make that list?

I think it's unbelievably weird how, despite this being such a bad movie, somehow Jolie nailed that role. It's something so bad, and yet so iconic, that when the new Tomb Raider comes out, they'll probably still be comparing it to hers. And it's not like Jolie doesn't have her share of both good and bad movies, but somehow, when talking about her, this role is the first thing that comes into mind, especially that DVD cover. I just cant even begin to think of who else could have been chosen for that role other than her. I mean, who else could have been considered an action star back then? Sigourney weaver? Whats her face, the female marine in the alien flick? You just dont have many choices. Now at least we have wonder woman as a potential if they decide to reboot this film.
Kate Beckingsale. Her own action breakout came just two years later. Still a great actress, beautiful, and actually British. Also, it doesn't matter about padding because even jolie needed padding.
I figured Chris Stuckmann got you to see this, 10:52 pretty much confirmed it. Not complaining, the more excuses we have to get more Beavis and Butthead impressions, the better.
Well, as a woman who was a fan of Tomb Raider back in the late 90's-early 00's, I always enjoyed this movie. We didn't have that many movie-action-heroines back then (mostly were on TV), and movie-Lara was a step above the two-dimensional woman of the games. She did seem to have an actual personality here, thanks to Jolie's great performance, and I liked that she was an actual action hero, not a damsel-in-distress trying to pass as capable; not raped for the sake of moving her storyline. Even the closest thing she had to a love-interest was more of a Croft-boy than a proper love-interest. It was, like you said, cool.
Well, I'm a fangirl of Tomb Raider too, and I just hated this movie ... Maybe because I watched it much later than you did. This is mostly the rough portrait, not very subtle and very caricatural of Lara that enervated me. Me, who always wanted to be like her in my youth, in no way I wish to be in the manner whose Angelina Jolie plays in the film, badly raised, repressing his title of Lady, and looking at everyone from top in a superior air. The Lara Croft of the game seemed to be more mature, smart and candid, a blend of purity and hardness. Here, it is constant and insolent hardness. Of course, it's my personal point of view. (French, my Engish is maybe bad.) ^^
Lily Jean, I know that feeling. I feel the same sort of way when I look at the original Devil May Cry's Dante and the reboot DmC: Devil May Cry's Dante.
Well, that's Generic-90s-Strong-Woman for you. It was that or Strong-Suffering-Woman-Who-Just-Wants-To-Be-Loved-But-Her-Strenght-Scares-The-Boys-Away type. There were different times.
You want arguments about the Mortal Kombat movie ? The actors are either good, okay or hilarious. The fighting scenes are well done. The story and characters are either close to the source material or well adapted. The bad things are still fun to watch.
GEEKFOREVER I remember watching the Mortal Kombat movie, and I can say, most of those arguments are bullshit. But the movie is hilarious in it's cheapness.
Here are some more possible explanations for the mysterious Batmanning kid: 1) She was a witch from the Harry Potter universe and she Apparated 2) She was possessed by an angel from the Supernatural universe and teleported 3) She was using a time travelling vortex manipulator like River Song, or 4) She didn't want to be adopted by Jolie and ran as fast as she could
Angelina had a bad relationship with her real father on screen (John Voigt) and the movie (the "I miss you" reconnecting scenes) helped them heal and grow at the time.
Corvus Callosum I even went to AwesomeCon 2017 and 2018 as Kim Possible! And before you ask, yes, I am a guy, but that doesn’t mean I can’t cosplay a girl! I even met Will Friedle, the guy who played Ron Stoppable! I wish I could meet the voice actress who played Kim!
Devan Weathers Oh for sure. Metroid has some of the coolest upgrades and items in any video game. The Ice Beam alone is cooler than anything in this movie (pun fully intended).
You know? It was a just plain fun movie. And for a movie called Tomb raider? That's all I wanted. People who ran around had adventures and went to crazy places while having actually somewhat fun fights. Good enough for me.
This was an extra funny review! I'm personally a fan of the new Tomb Raider game, but Doug has made some good points on why this Lara Croft would be fun to see again.
Fun fact: The "safety plan" for the Syberian temple destruction scene was "Run from here to here, and don't get hit by ANYTHING." (It's mentioned in the special features DVD...*cough* which I know because I own both movies *cough*....)
The key in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, was that the actress was alledgedly under severe mental difficulties during the time of recording, to the point that she was on heavy stimulants. This means that in a lot of scenes, she is genuinely fighting herself, as well as her doing her own stunts in the movie too - apparently whenever she hit the ground she got right back up even angrier and wanting to re-shoot it instantly.
Flynn Ryan Doug's skits have always needed some work, but working humor into his critiques is something that appears to be second nature (if you don't realize how hard he works on these things!). Everybody's a critic, but few are any good...
I thought the film was average. One question though: are you going to do Dreamworks-uary again to review Puss in Boots, The Croods, Turbo, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, How to Train your Dragon 2, Penguins of Madagascar, Home, Kung Fu Panda 3, Trolls, The Boss Baby and Captain Underpants The first Epic Movie please? Just think about it.
Hi, I'm from 2019. Sorry to disappoint you, but this didn't happen. While February isn't over yet, it is the 24th and I'm pretty sure it's not happening.
Harry Potter wakes up and gets crushed by wood. Credits- Directed by Chris Columbus Lara- "Let me just push that corpse of Harry Potter out of the way"
YES!!!!!! ALL I EVER WANTED WAS A NC REVIEW OF THIS MOVIE!!! P.s. I love this movie, even though it is rather insane. It's the fun kind of insane though.
6 years later I'm playing Tomb Raider Remastered and I stick to my opinion that the movie is just like the games, so it's fine. The games are pure cheese. And the best thing is that Lara never comes off like a poser who has to prove herself in a man's world, like in today's media. She just does her hobby and cold-heartedly igores anyone in her way.
MidKnight2142 I definitely got it! Considering a few years ago he listed it as his 3rd favourite TV show I knew it was coming. I would have been shocked if he hadn't made a joke.
Taterdude Guy If it just had more focus it could work but it was heavily CGI and was pretty obvious when humans were around especially in the last act, the humans are the weakest link as you don't really give a shity and the story was all over the place. Though the orcs I did enjoy.
DrStabkill But why would the direction of the knife reverse? She flipped it around, but how does that change the momentum of where it was thrown? Shouldn’t it have just kept flying toward 007 and hit him handle side first?
The real problem with video games is the movie studios change the story; focus on the action; and undermine the characters and plot; and choose the worst games to adept into movies. Why not make a BioShock; Fallout; Alan Wake; Knights Of The Old Republic; Spec Ops - The Line; or Metal Gear Solid. Another big problem is, video games are like books. You can't perfectly adept War And Peace into a two hour movie, and you can't perfectly adept Fallout into a two hour movie. A miniseries or straight up TV show would be a better fit for something that's very long; has many characters; and a massive ans sweeping story.
BioShock - World of Tomorrow (why they choose the bad ending is beyond me), Fallout - Mad Max Fury Road, Alan Wake - some Stephen King adaption just has to fit, as Wake seems to be based on him, Spec Ops is based on "Heart of Darkness" which was adapted for the big screen as Apocalypse now. Still no Knights of the old Republic, though.
As a Steven Universe fan I love that artwork of Blue Diamond and her Pearl on Doug's wall at 13:34. Lapis is my favourite character from the show because her personality is so much like mine, I even write fanfic of her and I being a couple.
I disagree with Warcraft being a bad movie, and I've never played the games. It didn't have god awfully long exposition dialogues, and you don't need to know the story of the games to follow the movie's plot; the major characters were also compelling, everybody had credible motivations for their actions (Ok, Gul'Dan can be a bit cartoonish, but even he has times of nuance). Sure, it has its faults. It's not a perfect movie. But I think it deserved a sequel regardless, just so the faults and questions unanswered in the first movie could be dealt with.

Lily Jean i agree with you :)
Omg I loved Tomb Raider on the PS1 when i was little!! such memories!
You want arguments about the Mortal Kombat movie ?
The actors are either good, okay or hilarious.
The fighting scenes are well done.
The story and characters are either close to the source material or well adapted.
The bad things are still fun to watch.
GEEKFOREVER And it’s got one of the best theme songs ever
GEEKFOREVER agreed. I would call it the best movie based on a game
Agreed. It’s still crap, but I love it!
GEEKFOREVER what have you done?!
*Pitchfork flys through window*
GEEKFOREVER I remember watching the Mortal Kombat movie, and I can say, most of those arguments are bullshit. But the movie is hilarious in it's cheapness.
I need to win the lottery so I can just give the NC 5 million dollars to stop playing Stardust ads.
install stardust upload it show NC what you reaction about stardust app is free on site
ULGROTHA jeez calm down, it was just a joke
Here are some more possible explanations for the mysterious Batmanning kid:
1) She was a witch from the Harry Potter universe and she Apparated
2) She was possessed by an angel from the Supernatural universe and teleported
3) She was using a time travelling vortex manipulator like River Song, or
4) She didn't want to be adopted by Jolie and ran as fast as she could

Not only the men, but the woman and children too
That's why George started the whole Iraq thing back then....
LOTS OF EVIL SAND DOWN THERE!!!😂😂😂
Let me just push that corpse of Harry Potter out of the way. O.O

Am I the only one who liked the Prince of Persia movie? As far as video game adaptations go, I thought it was alright.
It wasn't that bad though I still admit some of the casting choices were a little....off
I thought mortal kombat was a fun film. And the new animated film is good.
Douglas Zahn I LOVED THAT FILM!!!
My sister likes it but I don’t remember it well enough to pass judgement
Watch castlevania, you'll change your mind then
18:21-18:40 At least she didn't just find random medi-kits in the tombs like in the original game...?
Hi playing the game in the emulator in the water flowed when I wanted to actually do it is just stuck in the menu
Oh no! Lara Croft (Angelina Jolie) is being attacked by Beevus and Butthead!
Actually that would be both funny and awesome at the same time!
Gold Wolf That scenario just screams 90’s coolness.
Ahahaha pointy square boobs
There's been a surprising number of Beavis & Butt-head cameos in Nostalgia Critic reviews lately.
I was about to say the same thing, I like it
It'd make more sense if it were Rex and Weevil from Yu-Gi-Oh! Abridged.
I also thought of anakin when she said sand gets everywhere😂😂😂
We need more skits with you and Chris Stuckmann doing Beavis and Butt-Head.
Angelina had a bad relationship with her real father on screen (John Voigt) and the movie (the "I miss you" reconnecting scenes) helped them heal and grow at the time.
Flame Beats, at the time she was very young and needed to reconnect. But, true, I never followed the subject after that period.
He's a Trump supporter so no wonder

That Kim Possible reference made my day!
Corvus Callosum Same!

"Challenging the world of male-dominated characters."
Pretty sure Samus did that first.
Nerdy George Washington cooler weapon too
Devan Weathers Oh for sure. Metroid has some of the coolest upgrades and items in any video game. The Ice Beam alone is cooler than anything in this movie (pun fully intended).
They didn’t say she was the first to do so though.
You can challenge it more than once. Sexist stereotypes didn't just disappear in 1986.
Like a decade earlier too.
American actor pretending to be British, British actor pretending to be American..... fun! lol
and in the middle of it all...... Poor Arnold RImmer.......
Love Red Dwarf.
Hey the Professor Layton movie is awesome. I mean that's because it was made by the people who made the games and it's canon. But still! Awesome.
Marche800 Hell yeah! Finally, someone else who has seen that!
Marche800 I thought the Ace Attorney film was decent enough, too. I also had fun with Prince of Persia.
The Layton movie is perfect! They finally got *one* video game movie right
I love the Professor Layton movie! It's so good!
Tho to be honest the games are basically movies and you solve puzzles to continue playing the story.
It seemed to work.
The people using StarDust makes me not want to use it.
it's weird how the attractive ones get higher stars no matter what they say for/against the movie
junior214223 That's.. the opposite of weird, it's pretty normal. That's how basically everything like this will end up going.
He keeps saying "Lair-ah Croft" Its driving me nuts.
TMan978 at least he isnt saying laura.
I think it's because it's writing
L A R A
it's pronounced Lura, but can you blame him when it's writing
Lara?
It's an accent.
But a direct reading would be "La-ra" not "Lay-ra."
But Phonetically the letter 'A' is pronounced 'Ay" So technically both readings are correct.
stardust is so cringy, just proves that it takes talent to do what doug does
Flynn Ryan Doug's skits have always needed some work, but working humor into his critiques is something that appears to be second nature (if you don't realize how hard he works on these things!). Everybody's a critic, but few are any good...
Yeah he needs to stop promoting that
What's on Stardust is hardly comparable to what he does.
i thought the reaction he showed at the end of his rapsittie street kids review was pretty funny.
I love this movie, no joke it's proubibly one of my favorite bad/good movies. It's just so ridiculous at times I find it hilarious

Top 11 good Adam Sandler movies? I can't wait to see that!
My guess - "Billy Madison" is in the top 5, 3 for pure comedies.
I’m gonna say Hotel Transylvania and Bedtime Stories will end up on there as they re movies he does not control and have good elements
I thought Happy Gilmore was decent. Maybe it would be on the list, at least top 5.
I don't think Adam Sandler had 10 good movies in his career.
+Brendan Milburn I thought he did pretty well in "50 first dates"
I thought the film was average. One question though: are you going to do Dreamworks-uary again to review Puss in Boots, The Croods, Turbo, Mr. Peabody and Sherman, How to Train your Dragon 2, Penguins of Madagascar, Home, Kung Fu Panda 3, Trolls, The Boss Baby and Captain Underpants The first Epic Movie please? 6 years later I'm playing Tomb Raider Remastered and I stick to my opinion that the movie is just like the games, so it's fine. The games are pure cheese. And the best thing is that Lara never comes off like a poser who has to prove herself in a man's world, like in today's media. She just does her hobby and cold-heartedly igores anyone in her way.
"Yeah! It's 1997!"
Jesus. This franchise has been around just as long as I have.

Michael Lavoie omg yes please
Aha-ahahaha-ahaha you said "do America"
Being an adrenaline junkie was her sole motivation very early on in the games, but they brought her father being an archeologist fairly quick.
Heh, I enjoyed the "Red Dwarf" joke, I wonder who else caught it.
MidKnight2142 I definitely got it! Considering a few years ago he listed it as his 3rd favourite TV show I knew it was coming. I would have been shocked if he hadn't made a joke.
Boys from the Dwarf!
It was a souper reference.
That joke was served cold.
Always been a big fan of the Small Rouge One and its crew.

The Beavis and Butthead joke was pure gold.😂
Completely forgot that Daniel Craig and "Knight of the Friendzone" Mormont alias Ian Glenn were in this movie. ;)
Same. Then again, it feels like Glenn sprung fully formed perfecting the Friendzone on Downton Abbey.
The Warcraft movie was OK.
There's my unpopular opinion of the day.
Taterdude Guy If it just had more focus it could work but it was heavily CGI and was pretty obvious when humans were around especially in the last act, the humans are the weakest link as you don't really give a shity and the story was all over the place. Though the orcs I did enjoy.
Taterdude Guy I liked the tomb raider movie and fallout is trash. There's my unpopular opinions
Taterdude Guy
Yeah I like Warcraft too
SaiyanQuad92 You seem to have bad taste.
I just found Warcraft kind of boring
Gazpacho soup day! Hooray! Love Red Dwarf!
Shona MacMillan "in a previous life, I was Lara Croft's chief eunuch."
I like that her fathers is literally played by her father lol.
I didn't hate it. I mean it was pretty badass when she twisted around that knife
DrStabkill But why would the direction of the knife reverse? She flipped it around, but how does that change the momentum of where it was thrown? Shouldn’t it have just kept flying toward 007 and hit him handle side first?
AWS Vids I guess there is more to it than that, think of turning the knife around as more symbolic than literal.
Joshua That's why I was sooooo glad to see the Sly Cooper movie get cancelled so they can do a TV show instead
I wholeheartedly agree
BioShock - World of Tomorrow (why they choose the bad ending is beyond me), Fallout - Mad Max Fury Road, Alan Wake - some Stephen King adaption just has to fit, as Wake seems to be based on him, Spec Ops is based on "Heart of Darkness" which was adapted for the big screen as Apocalypse now. Still no Knights of the old Republic, though.
That was straight-up Augrha's planetarium! (The Dark Crystal- yes, yes??)
My Name Ain't Your Business I agree. You are right
