Breath-taking and delightful! Mary Pickford is a name that I've heard all my life. Until now I had never seen one of her movies. Now, at 59 years old, I know why she was so celebrated! And, Zsazu Pitts was a great too. Thank you!
Delightful and brilliant film! Mary Pickford is an amazing actress in the silent film era! This 1917 version of "The Little Princess" is just enjoyable to watch all over again and again! I love it as much as the 1939 (Shirley Temple) and the 1995 (Liesel Matthews) remakes. Thank you for this film! Again, this is one of the classic films that can't be resist for all ages to see!
Marshall Neilan, they don't allow movie directors like him anymore: young men who had already lived actual lives instead of being bred within a film-school bubble.
First time seeing this version. Loved the one with Shirley Temple. Also saw Little Lord fauntleroy 1921 with Mary Pickford, very good and enjoyable. When I read the part *Miss *by Becky. I hear the voice of the actress in 1930s version
🧚♀️An Immortal 🦄One of the biggest Artists ever existed who revolutioned with her life and work the world. An inspiration for next generations. That's sure ✨🏆
This old movie is very touching.. I wish i had lived in 1900..I don' t feel comfortable in 21 th century. People back then were happier i think and more polite, more civilized. They were not individualistic .Princess Sarah in the role is older than in the tale where she is supposed to be 10 years old, but she is pretty and generous just like Becky. She has a golden heart despite her grief. The end is cute. The actress had to be 16 years old at least..
I, too, wish I was born 100 years earlier! Mary Pickford was 25 years old during production of this feature! Being barely 5 feet tall, and very cute, enabled her to play child roles into her thirties!
Thank you Summer storm.I see that i'm not the only one to regret old times.Times were simpler and people had more conversations too.Plus Mary pickford was a very good actress even if she was small..That's incredible that she played childish roles so well .Wow!
It is a lovely film and I love it but does not really follow the book very well. Although it certainly does it better than the Shirley Temple one, which I also love anyway..I can't remember any other versions so I really can't compare with those..
All you have to do to solve the music issue is to download roughly an hours worth of old classical music and then use a mp3 file joiner and use the same file three times and then merge the three files together. This can be done without downloading any software to your computer. The only thing you have to download is the hours worth of classical music, which fits this film perfectly.
63filmbuff Yeah the issue with this is I tried adding music after I uploaded it. UA-cam editor was being wonky and only let me add the music at the beginning. Its been a few years though so I could try again with editor. I could always reupload with a different link with full music if it is really wanted.
Because of You Tubes "wonkiness" I do not use UA-cam to upload content there are some weirdos on here that make false copyright claims and such nonsense. The Internet Archive( archive.org is a much better platform to upload old movies to. I think you are treated better there too. UA-cam can be a virtual hotbed for weirdos and trolls that populate the internet while www.archive.org is a much more classy organization
The first LITTLE PRINCESS! 1917. First picture for Zasu Pitts? Loved Mary Pickford. Remake done in 1939 with Shirley Temple Black. But in this one Capt. Crewe came home. Love them both!!!😇
The most amusing fact for this film, was that the actor playing Ralph Crewe, Sarah's father, was actually two years younger than Mary Pickford. Not bad for 1917, but could have improved considerably if they had removed the story about Ali Baba, & fleshed out the characters & plot more, particularly involving Carrisford.
No one thought it strange at the time that Mary was 25 yrs old & playing a little girl. Zasu had already developed the fluttery hands that. would remain throughout her career
One very pleasant and nice piece of information for all the people who liked this movie-Zasu Pitts and Mary Pickford were the best of friends thoughout their lives. Feels good to know that in a hothouse artificial Hollywoodian atmosphere. The stupidest thing done by some property dealer clowns was pulling down the house in which Mary lived with her husband. Pickfair. They could have turned it into a moneymaking Showplace for tourists.
@@mustakimrozak8299 Pickford, Fairbanks and Chaplin had banded together to produce a lot of quality films. She was a Lady of Substance! If you enjoyed this, you might like her silent movie Little Lord Fauntleroy. I do not know who produced it, but it is enjoyable.
Liked the movie but choosing 25 year old Mary Pickford-born 1892-to play a 9 year old is plain ridiculous.Sara Crewe was 7-8 when she came to Miss Minchin's school.
I have to say, Sara in this movie is nothing like book Sara, but anyway it's really interesting to see this piece of history. Also, ZaSu Pitts was a great Becky!
I know Pickford was a big name then but couldn't they have gotten an actual child to play the part? Wasn't there a child start of the silent era - Baby Peggy? No offense to Pickford but seeing a fully matured woman playing a small child is - creepy.
I believe by the way people stood so still next to her, they were all on planks. 6:49, there were special effects in those days (some rather impressive) and it looks like they put her upper body on a child's legs.
My favorite is the 1986 version. It's closest to the book and has more realistic outcomes and a more realistic ending. Also seems better for homeschooling to introduce the story to my little girl. She can then read it, then indulge in the other versions if she likes.

Saw a documentary about Mary Pickford. Her biggest audience were the immigrants. 5 cents to see a movie. Because of her portrayal of being a poor girl in rags. Her kindness to those in need. The way the character was treated by those who were rich and mighty. The audience could relate to. Stay safe Greetings from Puerto Rico 🇵🇷
Original soundtrack written for the film is long lost. Any modern soundtrack has copyright. I added a classical song at the beginning using the youtube editor but for some reason I wasn't able to add music to the rest :/
What a beautiful ending! A beautiful poem
For lonely children and long lonely nights!
Im loving Mary. She was so charismatic and had that star quality. Great actress too.

Wonderful movie, fabulous acting too!
even she's too old to play a role as Princess Sara, she is very good in acting! plus, she's so cute. she is perfect to play as Sara Crewe!

Mary’s Catholicism must have insisted the writers develop this moral absolute!

I did watch this a few days ago I have no idea a silent movie existed, so I was really surprised.
Thanks for sharing it! Although the others are also good films, this 1917 version is closer to Frances Burnett's original writing than the others.

Since this film is from 1917 it falls under public domain. I think every film before 1924 or so falls into this.

it looks like, their was a trick that make Ms. Pickford into small person to make her look like a 10-12 year old girl

that is a nice pic of music well don

Very Good !
Does the music cut out for everyone after 7 minutes?
It does! Sorry I did this video a long time ago and I couldn't figure out how to add more music in UA-cam's editor at the time.
No worries thank you for uploading though! Thought it might’ve been my device of something haha :) thanks for clarifying!
Was Mary really that tiny or was she sitting on her knees or something to look so small next the man playing her father?
she was 4'11"
Jeffery Burnett 5'1"
I believe by the way people stood so still next to her, they were all on planks. 6:49, there were special effects in those days (some rather impressive) and it looks like they put her upper body on a child's legs.

Creepy how Mary Pickford is playing a little girl lol. What a miscast! And meanwhile while this movie was made, WW1 was raging in Europe...
ZaSu Pitts is funny😂😅
Shirley Temple version us the best. Can't beat Shirley. Like the 1 hour run time of this one. Films don't need to be 2 hours or more.
Better than 1995 remake
