Islam means "submit to the will of God"
God created every things in the universe from galaxies, stars, humans, animals, plants etc.
Everything comply to the grand design and basically operates as commanded by God, hence all creations are "Islam"
When we were born, technically we were following the rule of "Islam" in terms of body formation, number of heart beats/joints and etc
However, once we started to exercised our "free-will" at puberty, then we have exercised to obey or to disobey God. At this point we became muslim or non-muslim (follower of Islam or non-follower).
So, to go back to follow the religion of Islam is correctly refered as to "revert".
