Scotty is wrong about the automatic transmission. Both the BRZ/GR86 has an 6 speed auto transmission taken from an older 2005 Lexus vehicle. So they're very reliable.
Both the BRZ and GR86 are basically half Toyota half Subaru. The engine is designed by Subaru (but also uses Toyota’s D-4S fuel injection system), and the transmission is made by Toyota/Aisin .

I’ve never liked silicone jointing compounds and would rather have a conventional gasket or the rubber seal type that fits in to a groove and can’t move. Obviously they cost more but sure are less aggro when it comes to reassembling parts.
I'm with Scotty, I prefer a manual transmission. I had a little 2011 Ford Fiesta with only 109 horsepower, but it had a five speed, and was a blast to drive.
Scotty appreciated your video Have both a 4cylibder and a 6 cylinder both 2017 bought as pricing of 2nd was great etc no engine troubles change oil as specified no overheating have a great day
Drain the oil, and use a borescope (through the drain plug hole), and you may be able to view the pickup tube screen without pulling the pan. Silicone has been used by small engine OEMs for years without issue.
Makes sense what atrout481 said. It is on the bottom end of the oil pickup tube which has to be close (1/4 inch) to the bottom of the pan to prevent sucking air instead of oil.
I agree the manual is more fun, but the automatic (which is an Aisin) in these has historically been much more reliable than the manual. They made minor tweaks to both transmissions for the 2nd Gen, but they fundamentally the same.
@@WontSeeReplies throwout bearing is in the clutch not the transmission. I'm a 395whp and I've blown 2nd gear twice tho. Both times I was taking 1st to 8600 well beyond factory redline so I wouldn't fault my trans for that. There have been plenty of subie build at 900 plus on factory trans though so they are well built.
the toyota has different suspension and engine tuning making it a little more fun to drive while the subaru is set up to make consistent lap times on a track
I love to watch Scotty's videos with the volume all the way down. His hand gestures would lead you to believe he's telling you the end of the world is upon us, due to giant monsters of some sort. Or something of that nature at least.
Scotty, the suspension of the GR86 and BRZ are also different as both Subaru and Toyota tuned the suspension differently. This is why most people say the GR86 is a little better handling.
Also, the Toyota has a slightly stiffer rear suspension which gives it better straight line performance but the Subaru will out slalom and out corner the Toyota any day, giving it clear dominance on the track. Many Americans are conditions to love only straight line speed but if you love mountain driving like me, the Subi is the way to go!
The general consensus seems to be: Brz- smoother ride. Better daily driver Gr86- not faster but more playful. Better track car. However neither is worth it if there are large mark ups.
@@m3rdpwr is that a fancy term for markup? I guess I got lucky. My subaru dealership allows people to order new cars at msrp. But their cars on the lot are marked up $5-10k.
@@davey9090 yes, that is one of the fancy terms. A Ford dealer tried the AMV on it me back in the '80s. That's where I got the AMV letters from. But yes you are correct. The one dealer did say that they could sell the Outback at MSRP because it wasn't as good as the seller.
Besides the bumper there are some more differences between the BRZ and GR86. The BRZ uses different dampers, spring rates, and has a smaller rear anti-sway bar that attaches differently. There's some other differences but those are the biggest ones mechanically I believe.
My daughter had one a few years ago. Perfect chick car. I'm 6'2" and it was too tiny for me!! My favorite hot hatch was 1980 280zx 5 speed manual. The back seat is for dogs. Fun to drive if you can fit. I'm keeping my 1990 Geo Storm only 92k miles. In perfect shape it is nice; new suspension, a/c, stereo etc. Only liability insurance so it is reasonable.
@Kristen Sorensen how the heck do you own a Geo Storm? They are EXTREMELY hard to find on the road today, their pretty rare. I’ve never seen one in my 15 years of life. Let me guess, your Storm is a red hatchback, not wagonback. The wagonback is extremely rare, I bet they’re only a couple dozen left in the world. But the Storm is a really cool car though, there’s no arguing that. If I saw one on the road, I would go absolutely bananas
Have you tried the 2002 -2005 Lexus IS300? I'm 6'7" and i fit fine without almost no headroom, I would recommend a planted seat bracket with a reclinable racing seat for more headroom
I drove a '99 Honda Civic Si for like 15 years. Thing got stolen, and am now driving a Honda Fit. And it definitely doesn't have the same appeal to me. Si coupes are almost hard to come by. And Honda no longer makes them. Been having my eye on the FR-S/BRZ/86 cars. Glad to see see they got the Scotty seal of approval.
I done the same thing back in the mid 90s when I bought my B4000 truck. I couldn't get the Ford guys to deal and the B4000 is the same truck as the Ranger
My '15 Crosstrek gets fantastic gas mileage. I fill it up once a month and go all over Long Island. I just had new tires put on after the dealership flattened them b/c theiy wanted me to trade it in. That's another reason why I've still had it. I can't stand dealing with those crooks.
i had a 1978 Subaru Brat. it rusted out twice and i replaced the fenders then ditched it when the frame went bad. it had that boxer engine and the 4WD manual was still just fine.
As to MPG going downhill. My 2010 KIA with a 1.4 Lit. 90 HP 4 door hatchback 5 sp. manual (not sold in USA) When I drive downhill the computer that calculates kilometers until empty actually goes in reverse. I would drive 10 km. and when I finish the kilometers until empty would go from like 400 to 405. As if someone was adding gas to my car. When I go uphill the reverse is true. When I drive 10 km. the kilometers until empty would go from 400 to 380. The feature is pretty accurate as far as telling U how far you can drive, however.
there are actually a few more differences between the brz and the 86, i know the brz has stiffer hollow sway bars and the suspension is mounted differently in the rear
5:00 I understand he says Subaru has automatic transmission weakness. But I'm pretty sure the automatic version of this BRZ has the same reliable automatic transmission found in the GR86.
Yep, the auto transmission in both the Subaru BRZ and Toyota GR86 comes from Aisin and was originally used by Toyota in the Lexus IS. It's been updated since then, but never really had problems.
I had a lot of issues with my wife's Subaru. Rust all over, auto transmission, windows alignment 3x. Exhaust repair 2x, brake problems. The engine had a tic from day one brnd new. By the time it had 50k and 10 years old it sounded like a diesel when you started it cold. My Honda with triple the mileage and none of these problems sounded smooth as a sewing machine. Subaru's suck. I'd rather own a British car. 😆 🤣.... maybe not. 👎
The Subarus made around 2010 suck, older ones you can run for 300k+ if you take care of it (I have a 2000 outback at 231k guaranteed to run another 100k)
I am attending Western Technical College in El Paso for Diesel Technologies (medium and heavy duty commercial), there is a student here that has Toyota 86 with an LS swap. The student brings it in from time to time to put it on the dyno.
Scotty is just a mad Japanese lover. Old subaru's lasted over 300k miles easily and new one blew their head gasket under 150k miles mostly if you are lucky. You can still find old 98-2002 Subaru outbacks running in snow with over 200K miles...but never you will find a subaru made past 2004 running with those miles problem free. I am telling by experience because i owned the 99 subaru outback and now i own the 2012 camry. Scotty burned me on this. The 2012 camry is worst than a wolkswagen. .900,000 of them built with faulty torque converter, which also let to many failed transmissions. I am getting mine changed at under 100k miles. And they ride horrible with horrible gas mileage.
@@richsweeney1115 no sir, i did not get a “bad one”. Toyota manufactured 900,000 of those Camry vehicles from 2012-14 with experimental torque converter, which also destroyed most transmissions. But they did not disclose it publicly, only when pressured, they covertly sent out letters to those owners and they first only updated the software, then torque converters and then adding magnets to the transmission. Unfortunately, not all the owners of those 900,000 got that notification and toyota denied to take any responsibility. Now those owners are stuck with that defective vehicle and spending 5k every 50-60k miles to have a new torque converter.
@@peopleschoice9555 noone I've ever known with a Camry had a tranny issue. but, even if those are real numbers... every company has issues some years. like Subaru and their issue with head gaskets for ten years. and Scotty is mad? he said to buy this on over the Toyota...... how is he mad?
My brother's 2014 Outback 4 cyl, bought new, burned oil from day 1, then blew the head gasket this past year. Dealer said $7k to fix. He got rid of it instead. Traded it to the dealer for a different brand. If you have anything funny going on with a Subaru engine, get rid of it.
So Scotty! Found out the silicone is not the issue. It's actually the oil pressure dipping down dramatically, causing oil starvation. There is a baffle plate coming out to help with preventing the oil starvation. It has no oil pan baffle. Which is causing oil to go into the timing chain cover I believe? I'd have to read again and update ya on what I've read. But it's going to eventually be fixed. But RTV is a contributing factor, not the ultimate cause.
Scotty claims to have customers with every car type in the world. The odds of this dude seeing 2 2022 model BRZ\86 as customers already is slim to none.
@@Carlos.Rivera Yea they don't all blow up. That would be something. But I assure you. These Subaru engines blow up more often than other Asian brands.
Scotty: Car and Driver said it's under powered (BRZ and G86) Bunk ! What a finely balanced car. I have a V6 2014 Camaro. It too is finely balanced: suspension, power and handling. It doesn't need a V8. O to 60 means nothing to me! Who drag races? The drag racers not me.
I bought a crosstrek premium 6 speed manual. I like the little car. I get 33 mpg consistently with hills, way better then the EPA rating which is only 22 city 29 highway for the manual. The EPA is not fair on their mileage rating for the stick shift. I think they dont want people buying them.
I have a 2021 Crosstrek Touring manual and it had already gone to the dealer for 5 days as they tried to figure out an intermittent hesitation problem at 16,000kms…came back working fine again, but…not really trusting it now. They blamed carbon issues and did an intake clean, replaced an injector, plug, and did a remap. All engines that use direct injection should have port injection as well so that this is not really an issue…the GR86 and BRZ do.
Scotty, check with the silicone manufacturer. Ford and many other brands have used silicone to seal the valve cover for many years. As long as the silicone cures completely there should be no silicone in the oil or fuel system.
Man, Scotty could be an excellent symphony conductor! Can you imagine if he actually conducts the "William Tell Overture" by Rossini? Er....of course I like his car reviews! I watch them all the time !!!!!!!!
These look fun but thinking of how it compares to my hoopty... Still loving my 04 Mustang GT... similar performance, great reliability, it's own notorious sound, only 1/8 - 1/4 the price. Similar rated quarter mile times, handles like it's on rails with some pretty cheap springs. Way easy to work on.
Toyota and Subaru have been sister companies for decades they just never screamed it from a mountain top. Toyota was a 40% shareholder in Subaru last I heard and that was a long time ago. They swap engineering all the time Camrys were using their AWD 30 plus years ago. Subaru is the king of AWD. Hey even GM borrowed from them. An 80’s Nova was a rebadged Camry and a Geo Prism was a rebadged Corolla. The Vibe a Matrix. Subbing out for something reliable 😂.

Most fun I’ve had with a car, and a great price too.
Whoa!!! 29mpg??? Amazing results. Thank you Scottie.
I get 120 mpg in my challenger 392 in tesla mode (clutch in neutral) while going downhill.
Tesla Mode 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I agree the manual is more fun, but the automatic (which is an Aisin) in these has historically been much more reliable than the manual. They made minor tweaks to both transmissions for the 2nd Gen, but they fundamentally the same.
I wouldn’t doubt that. I know their manuals had throw out bearing problems around 2015, 16 WRXs.
Do they have paddle shifters ?
@@WontSeeReplies throwout bearing is in the clutch not the transmission. I'm a 395whp and I've blown 2nd gear twice tho. Both times I was taking 1st to 8600 well beyond factory redline so I wouldn't fault my trans for that. There have been plenty of subie build at 900 plus on factory trans though so they are well built.

the toyota has different suspension and engine tuning making it a little more fun to drive while the subaru is set up to make consistent lap times on a track
I am waiting to hear about the 120 miles per gallon gas engine Scotty……………still waiting
Yes, me too.
He did show that the car was getting 120 mpg while going downhilee.
I love to watch Scotty's videos with the volume all the way down. His hand gestures would lead you to believe he's telling you the end of the world is upon us, due to giant monsters of some sort. Or something of that nature at least.
Sounds like it's time for a voice over video 😂😂
Yes only manual, as Scotty said, more fun and runs for ever.
when I hear Subaru ,i hear "big end" and "headgasket"
The new BRZ has very different suspension than the GR86. They are notably different now
Yep, Everyday driver posted the best explanation of this a few weeks ago. I'll take the GR 86
Not really. You won’t notice it until you’re pushing the car really hard.
Scotty, the suspension of the GR86 and BRZ are also different as both Subaru and Toyota tuned the suspension differently. This is why most people say the GR86 is a little better handling.
Correct. I believe that The engine mapping is also different in each car.
I like Subaru emblem better than Toyota
Thanks Scotty. This video only cost me $29,900 out the door.
Geez my 2013 BRZ cost me 30k back then brand new and presently I only have 70k on the odometer.
You're telling me a new 2024 is only 29k???
Scotty's review style is simply pure and unique. Love it!🔥
I've got a 2019 BRZ, supercharged! Love it!
There are some minor differences in the suspension, between the new BRZ and gr86.
The general consensus seems to be:
Brz- smoother ride. Better daily driver
Gr86- not faster but more playful. Better track car.
However neither is worth it if there are large mark ups.
@@davey9090 all the Subaru dealers near me have an adjusted market value, or AMV on all their vehicles.
@@m3rdpwr yep its pretty depressing that this has become the norm. I paid msrp for my brz , but it's a 6 month waiting time... so its a trade off
you just made up my mind when you explained the silicone problem.
I think SCOTTY just found his next TOY to buy, once he can find a used one cheap
Is it terrible to say to another guy, from a straight guy to a straight guy I LOVE YOU MAN. Best thing since sliced bread this channel is.
I have to say that the 3.6's are fantastic motors! I wish they wouldn't have dropped those engines. Paired to a 6mt would be amazing as well!
Mostly guys drive these cars. Subarbros, and they vape
Chicks don't understand performance so they stick to cheap 'pretty according to them' cars like Pontiac Soltices and convertible Chevy Cavaliers
Have you tried the 2002 -2005 Lexus IS300? I'm 6'7" and i fit fine without almost no headroom, I would recommend a planted seat bracket with a reclinable racing seat for more headroom

Si coupes are almost hard to come by. And Honda no longer makes them. Been having my eye on the FR-S/BRZ/86 cars. Glad to see see they got the Scotty seal of approval.
I think we need a moratorium on thumbnails that say “Shock the industry”.

I still have one. :)

It's the CVTs to avoid. Seems like the old 4 speed auto are long lived, the 5 speed auto a little less so.

Never had an issue with over heating in my Subaru Outback. 85k and not an issue.
I was told the BRZ automatic transmission was made by Toyota
Yes finally Scotty gets to review my dream car!
29 mpg is about the same as 120 mpg.
This is a fundamental issue with boxer engines. Subaru still haven’t gotten it right yet when it comes to the lubrication of these engines.
Gimme that knowledge Scotty!
I drive a standard Jeep Renegade and I got my average mpg up to 30.6, the previous owner had it at 21. It's all about how you drive.
😆 🤣.... maybe not. 👎

And they ride horrible with horrible gas mileage.
so .. you got a bad one.. it happens w every brand
My 1972 Toronado is running perfectly fine with the TH425 transmission for fifty years now.
With your hand movement, Scotty, I’m surprised you don’t take off to the skies
Scotty claims to have customers with every car type in the world. The odds of this dude seeing 2 2022 model BRZ\86 as customers already is slim to none.

How can anyone actually enjoy driving in an automatic?
Absolutely. The whole playing around the stick thing is overrated.
I do.

Scotty, what are your thoughts on a Acura csx?
Scotty the automatic on the BRZ and Toyota is an Aisin Transmission!
lot of people dont know..that toyota owns a huge part of subura...they are subura largest stock owner
Scotty feeling YOUNG again! Dragstar Scotty!!!
Scotty, check with the silicone manufacturer. Ford and many other brands have used silicone to seal the valve cover for many years. As long as the silicone cures completely there should be no silicone in the oil or fuel system.
