I love and appreciate you sooooo damn much for posting this content, dude. Unfortunately, I was born in '89, but my brother was born in '77 and is the one I was introduced to the car audio world through. I remember raiding his stashes of Car Audio, Can Stereo Review, Auto Sound & Security, Mini Truckin, and Lowrider magazines. I'd absolutely DROOL over the Cerwin Vega Strokers and all those cleanly displayed processors and PPI Art amps... And seeing the things Alma Gates was doing, I still can't wrap my head around. I envy you and everyone else who was there in the mix participating in the unfolding of what car audio is today. So much respect to the above you, your channel, and everyone else who hasn't let mobile audio die out
Sorry for typos. This phone tends to do what it wants
Keep up the old school installs BigDWiz! I was a young teenage basshead in the 90's that couldn't wait till the next issue of Autosound&Security and Car Audio and Electronics magazine would come out so I can see trick installs like these. I like and appreciate your work my-man.
Thanks for watching and commenting!
You and me both.
Loved the look of the older Alpine head units!!!
+Steve Jones those have a classic look that will never go out of style. Hoping they will do retro models
God I wish I still had all the old pics of installs from 1988 to 1996...lost in a fire...but thanks big d for the memories. Love it
+Xstreamaudio sucks! At least you have the memories in your mind. Thanks for watching and commenting 🤙
I’m 54 now, I was obsessed with car audio, I got my first job at Reggies Stereo in West Hollywood in 1988, went on to work with other higher end shops and finally owned my own shop in San Gabriel Vallley , had to close due to Gulf War I’m now a State Certified Electrician and other Electricians always ask why my panels are always flawless and detailed I’ll explain my roots in Car Audio I sure miss competing in the IASCA Nationals , my comp car was a 89 escort GT with 4 10 inch redline subs and 3 Orion subs total of 23 speakers 2 extra batteries an a custom high output alternator hitting 140dbs piped my side rear window out . thanks for posting this videos gave me goosebumps.
I miss that old Orion stuff
+Five Star Car Stereo agreed. Something about it just makes me feel good. Not sure if it’s the looks, sound or nostalgia. Either way, I’m with you 👌
The Z28 was dope!
+hifivega agreed 🤙
@@wal that '91 Z28 just sold in Anchorage AK for about $40K
I got into car audio at the peak of these old school builds, have seen a couple of the vehicles you featured here. Lived in KC at the time and had a blast at Bartle Hall during the USAC Championships year over year. Love it!
I'm lovin' these Old School Audio Installs Comp's!!! Keep up the Great Work!
Nice trip down memory lane👌
The way that little girl's face lit up is how I feel when I see awesome installs like these. Such beautiful work and its all functional, the best combo there is! I wish I was the craftsman these guys were
I was an old school stereo guy. Man we had a lot of fun doing these installs and going to sound competitions with them and just hanging out together down at the local audio shops helping newbies and talking shop. And of course cruising...you can't forget that. I am working on an old school style install right now (it's the only way I know how to do it) on my old 1986 Chevy van, doing up a system with a pair of JL amps, JL Audio speakers and subs, and an AudioControl DSP. I am getting excited for spring when I roll it out on the streets.
Worked in car audio all my life . I remember A US Amp rep demo' ing an amp that he made the outputs arc against each other and it did not shut down. Or the Alpine cassette changer? Alma Gates brought in her Bronco for a tune up before they took it to DB Drags . Her team did it but we got to look at it close up. This thing was positively insane! A smaller RF amp was driving the preamps for signal. Crazy times , indeed. Or David " the Fishman" Rivera?
Awesome video bro! Love the old school audio installs.
Those old solobarics bring back good memories! The red laser car was the coolest install I’ve seen! Amazing work!
man when i think of old school i remember people with walls of 6x9's haha back in 82-84,i never saw anything this nice back in the day,i had four 12's in 89 they were under powered M&M's haha with you guessed it a alpine, always the pretty green alpine those were good times my friend
So freaking cool. The older installs looked way better and more finished then the ones today.
+Trapperjohn1000 lots of hours put into these!
Trapperjohn1000 Agreed!! Seems as if people put more pride into the work!! Love these old school installs!! 👌
Agreed! As someone who was first introduced into car audio in the 80s by older family members and friends I can say back then people spent a lot more time on the looks, details and the installs. Now it's mostly only about volume and SPL not so much the cosmetics and the installs. I'm sure BigDWiz would agree.
Value of the dollar isn’t what it used to be and shops have gotten shitty
@@wal I know there is a lot of hours spent on these installs, that's for sure. Would you agree BigDWiz that the installs from back in the day look way better then the ones today ? I don't mean sound quality, just aesthetics
I loved the Camaro with the plexiglass. So clean.
+MyTruckinLife ACE agreed, one of my favorite car audio installs ever!
Love it! Keep the old school systems coming!
Fosgate, Alpine and Orion was everywhere in mid 90's in Spokane.. I ran mtx and fultron amps
Kicker was also.
Fultron!! I forget about those!!!
that brought back some good memories. thanks
Thanks for the video. I remember those and got a little nostalgic.
These are some of my favorite videos
Thanks big d! This brings me back to the past! Great upload as usual
+Steve M. Yanovich thanks for watching and commenting 🤙
Always some nice old school set ups
+sleeper10s thanks for watching and commenting 👍
Great video I like the thought behind the old school set ups.
So funny to see Jake Cali old installs. We use to be good friends and I would hangout by his shop with that van.
Jack is currently recreating all the older orion pcb's ,he's awesone.
Love your channel man
Man I had to come wayyyy back to watch this brother so dope how far we have come... but the old school stuff was and still is so dope
I dig making vids about the old amps too
In the mid-late '90s in my home town (N. Bay Area) an older couple in their late 50s had their kid who was established for audio, built them a slammed mini truck, no hydraulics, but had two Cerwin Vega Stroker 15s. Talk about tremendous bass.
Great video , I really enjoy watching these old school setups .
+Dominick Cutrona thanks, I enjoy assembling the pics and vids into a compilation. Such a cool throwback 🤙
AHHH MORE MEMORIES😮👍👍👍Was born and raised in Daytona beach, fla, graduated in the 90's,went to many if not all Soundcrafters Spring Break Nationals, this is very cool material,THX BIG D!!!KNOCKED IT OUT DA PARK AS USUAL😊
+Michael Day too bad we didn't have cell phones with 4k video back then!!
LOVE IT!!
Great video! I remember competing 88' to 90' and my goals for install with my friends is, every thing invisible to the eye's! But still achieve the best sound possible (spl) and flat on the analyzer screen. Good old day's.
Yeah boi
Awesome builds!!
Love the video!!!!
Man I love these old vids and pics. Really takes me back. Gosh I miss those days...
+SONY BOY I dig them as well and happy to share them with the community. Both old schoolers and those new to Car Audio
BigDWiz Do you happen to remember the name of the stereo shop that was in Elkin back in the day? I remember going down there with my Escort and the 4, 18” Volcanos to get tested but can’t remember their name.
Over the top awesome motorizations on that red hatch. What a sweet sleeper.
Love it!
Miss that era. Love the 90s
OMG I remember the Rockford van in the opening credits. That was one of the first SPL vehicles I ever heard.
Doncaster Custom Car Show 1993 or 94 ( Car Audio Labs Pontiac Trans Sport)
I LOVE THE 90'S😎
+Jed Petersen me too, we are getting old 😝
I gotta vote for the late 80's too!
Another great video, thanks Big D'
+David LaRue thanks for watching and commenting 👍
We need more old school builds 😭
Crazy to see the attention to detail!
+Dr. Jellyfinger yes, many hours invested in these installs!
So cool man. Wish I still had my equipment from back then. 2 Dsm series 200x2s on 4 punch 12s in a mustang 5.0 hatchback. Everybody loved riding with me!
Good time i installed from 88 to 90 for iasca competition events, boy i miss those days!
Why am I just now seeing this!!! Awesome please do moooore!!!
Great video!
+Random Someone thanks for watching and commenting
Haha I own a 91 crx right now and was going to do 2 12's. Nice to see props on a video for a crx!
I’m preparing a system with old school Rockford Fosgate 25 to life amplifiers. I’ll submit pics as soon as it’s done!!! I’ve had these amps for 10+ years and can’t wait to hear how they perform!
I told you about the transformer from paul. That is sick. I knew that you would love it.
Those old Orion XTR’s were some of the best ever made! Didn’t need a ton of power to pound but could take some if you had it! I miss my blue stripes in a bandpass!!!
You can’t beat this era. I remember in Houston going to thunder on wheels.
So happy to see Orion coming back super strong in today's age.
man i love the look of the old Orion & jl subs.
I miss my funky pups on my urban audio amp 💪🏽 jk I def appreciate these types of videos ... priceless
Those cameros are dope!!!!!!
+Martin Taylor so fresh and so clean clean 😝
Man those CRX Honda’s seem to create SPL on there own!!! That hatchback design was always a killer in competition!! The ole Astro Van was the speaker box on wheels as well!! I think every serious sound shop had one for SPL in 1998!!!
This is a fact!
Super cool
Yeah, the good old 90's, when i started.
Precision power amps were sick back in the days
Ya the PPI Art series were nice looking amps
could watch this all day. just gained employment. lookin to get the dust off my dd system. and hook up the newly added oldschool alpine eq w/ BBE processing. need to find an installer that can trust to work on my new used virgin car. dont want a repeat of the last ride to happen. thanks D. another 20k+ view video. people love oldschool car audio, dont they
+indopleaser I’m quite amazed at the number of views lately, but very happy too! My views to subscriber rate is extremely high and that’s awesome 👍
Love those 2nts. I have 11 of the twelve and 4 of the 15s just waiting.
Damn that transformer build was probably one of the best I've seen ever.
Awesome video bro!
+T Wise II thanks for watching and commenting 👍
You're welcome. I'm a die hard music fanatic & audiophile myself. Keep up the good work on these cool videos!👏👍👍
To the old school.🍻
+Neon Bass 🤙
Very clean installs! I like loud and proud systems but they need to be clean installs to have the whole package.
Thanks for watching and commenting!

Oh snap
Iroc set up was bada$$$!!!
Man I miss those days!!
Need more of these posts bro, old school car audio company builds would be cool too
I’ll see what I can do ✌️
Awesome .
Thanks for watching and commenting!
I miss American made car audio companies.
+Blacky Madd JL Audio, MMATS, D'Amore Engineering, Boland Audio and more are still making or assembling in the US
BigDWiz. Thanks for letting me know that. It seems to me that just about every car audio company that I grew up reading about in magazines like car audio and electronics and car stereo reveiw has been bought and destroyed by Chinese manufacturers and other culprits. I said that in my first comment because I'm old school and l just turned 43 yrs old this month. What's happening to car audio for the past 15-20 yrs just hurts my heart. Thanks for responding and take care BigD.
the local shop here . had 12 kicker 18" with a ss1000 on each. with a door full of mids & highs. it was hitting 157+ man was it hard to breath in that thing. I think they low passed at about 50Hz.
I did a install in a crx. 4 15" sub's. in a sealed box. with JL 15" and 250w ea. nice video. makes me wish I had a time machine!
I agree! Go back and get some 4K video footage of these systems and experience them in person!
WOW! Brings back so many memories. 1994 was the first build I helped do in a friend’s Civic Si. Alpine CD Deck. Boston Acoustic components, three 15” JL Audio DVC Subwoofers. Three PPI 600.2 amps and 300.2. 1995 was my first build in a 88 Thunderbird Turbo Coupe. Blaupunkt Head unit, Boston Acoustic 6.5 components door and dash, rear seat removed to fit a box with six separate enclosures. Four 8” Thiele Subwoofers, Two Cerwin Vega 15” Subwoofers. Active Crossover running Alpine 2channel 200 watt, Kenwood 4 Channel 400 watt, and Profile California AP2000. All the pics I had were destroyed in a flood. I wish I had even one, or a video. We weren’t so worried about taking pictures and recording everything back then. Hey, totally random can you maybe test the Nakamichi NGTD1200.1 and/or NGTA7404 amps. They seem pretty legit. Nice sized fuses the the Class D Monoblock has 3x40A and Class A/B 4/3/2 Channel has 2x25A. They’re not claiming anything that doesn’t seem reasonable either. I just know that Nakamichi is not the OG Nakamichi we remember from the 80’s and 90’s and has been bought out by a Chinese company. Having said that, I’ve used several of the new Nakamichi headphones and was pretty impressed with the sound quality. Anyway love the channel!!
+Matthew J. Hull, BAS, BMF those setups sound sweet! I'll look into the Nak amps. Pretty sure they are just using the name and no longer the Nak we know from back then
Iam 4 years late for this party but super cool old cars that brought back some crazy cool old memories
It’s all good! Thanks for watching and commenting!
I miss all this old amazing build amps
😊👍
Sweet!
+Caleb Crawford thanks! These guys did all the work, I just put the pics/vids together
I miss those round kicker solo baric subs😪. They got so loud!! Had 2 15’s
Man, I have seen a few of those Concept 97's pop up on ebay. They never sell cheap. I had an autographed PPI PC2350 that was in Alma Gates' Bronco. These are some nice looking set ups. It's too bad there aren't very many installs like this anymore!
It was hard getting good bass out of Camaro"s with sealed boxes
Nice
Awesome video like always big d
+cubanman2009 👌😊🤙
the ending 9 JL 18's doing the hair trick. insane!
Ah the good old days of a Saturday afternoon with your fingers all sticky with spray adhesive and grey trunk carpet!!!! The smell of Bondo in your ride......
Back then it was all tweed not grey carpet
Awesome classics...man, I miss the SQ brands!
Thank you Big D Wiz. There was a mysterious magic about those 1990's custom stereo builds. Back then it was fascinating looking at a lowered mini truck bumping down the block playing DJ Magic Mike shaking windows at the school. Everyone was in class looking out the window. It was impressive the way it felt and sounded. No thanks to Class D amps it doesn't sound like it used to. Class AB bass sounds omni directional...Class D ruined the magic because it's directional I can always tell where the source of the bass is originating. Half of the fun back then was not knowing where the bass was coming from because it sounded like it was coming from everywhere.
In my home town (Northern Bay Area) there was an older couple in their late '50s who had the sickest mini truck. Their son built them a lowered mini truck with two Cerwin Vega Stroker 15s, everywhere they went that shit was slamming hard! The cops didn't bother them either. Deepest, cleanest bass I ever heard!
I had that 3 disk alpine unit and that clarion that was hidden behind the 2 knob they both were passive!
I have one I’m going to review too
That kid near the end is me every day.
😝👍
Awesome stuff, but that van moves serious air, up there with today's giant amps and super woofers!
+bassmansoundking99 yeah, pretty windy in there!!
I wish i had some video of my Explorer system from the 90's, but all i have are a few old photo's. Here's a run down of my setup: Dual Kenwood HU's (cassette & CD) wired w/ a "Smart Switch" / (2) JL 12W4's in a "super thick" MDF Ported Box w/ Precision Power PC2150 Sub Amp & Q-Bass Knob / (4) 5"x7" Infinity Kappa's 1/ea. door w/ Kenwood 100Wx4 Amp / (2) Kicker ND-25 Tweeters w/ Kenwood 100Wx2 Amp / US Amps 3-Way Crossover. "0" gauge wire from alternator to the rear of truck & Monster Cable RCA's.
Sweet
The think I saw the van with all the HCCA amps at a show but don’t remember where maybe Cali or Daytona Beach. Some IASCA event.
Love those orion amps. Wanted one so bad in high school but couldnt afford it. Great vid as always! Need to reveiw some old school head units, i have a great condition clarion drx9375r from mid 90s id like to know how it stacked up.
+Chrisbama I plan to do more head units in the future. Here's my previous Sony CDX-7520 review - ua-cam.com/video/FEA-r9WWYyM/v-deo.html
