Back when cheating was a good thing? Yeah, in the 90's, some organizations used 4 ohm stereo wattage to divide competition classes. How could you "cheat" the system? Get an amp rated for high current, low impedance operation. Today I'm going to discuss the Old School SPL challenge and the details. I'll also show a couple of (lame) SPL runs with a Lanzar 50c and Crossfire CFA-30HC. This is all for fun, but feel free to join in by taking some of those old school amps off the wall and joining in on the fun!

I love seeing new life being breathed into some old classic amps. Sadly I have sold most of my collection now due to moving and nothing the space or time to do anything with it. Having been a dealer for many years, I am a huge Rockford Fosgate fan.

Brings me back to early 90s where I had a crunch 10 in a 5 gallon bucket off the factory deck. Not to mention I used a extension cord for speaker wire. Lol the things we had to do to get a little bit of bass in our vehicles.

I PURCHASED tons of car audio equipment from 1986- 1993 . It was /is all top of the line brands .
Over 3/4 of it has never been taken out of their original packaging.
Except for a very few exceptions , the brands I'm going to list are.
    1. ALPINE Amplifiers
2 Harmon Kardon component system speakers with built in passive crossovers. The rest of the mid to high frequency speakers were Polk Audio.
    ALPINE PRO SERIES 12"-10" SUBS.
AUDIO CONTROL MADE UP ALL OF MY PRE AMPED ACTIVE CROSSOVERS.
    ALPINE CD head pieces.
About 2 months ago, I had a few full weekend my time on my hands
So I unwrapped a few apps a set of Polk oval speakers, and a pair of HK full mid range speakers .
And of course one of my pre amped active Audio Control .
Matching my HK s with an ALPINE 3528 and last. But ANYTHING but least, 0ne of my previously used ALPINE 3545 AMPS , With a Audio Control Epicenter , pushing a pair of my previously used 10" Alpine pro subs.
The only thing I cheated on, was that I installed more modern era Capacitors. on the 3545.
    Final result.
In all honesty , that system installed in a restomod 72 VW beattle.
One more thing. I put all of my old unused as well as used ,audio equipment ,in a climate and light controlled garage.
In my opinion, It sounded just as great as it did back in the late 80s ,as well as most audio equipment you can buy brand new right now, in 2019

Gotta rear-face the subs, and ideally have a piece of MDF close to them for it to face and reflect back off. Facing "up", facing "sideways", facing "down", facing "front", or sticking the sub in the middle and facing in one of those orientations, usually results in less spl at the ears. And having the subs on the FLOOR always helps. It gives the bass a surface to reflect off. Same deal with home subs. Hang them on a wall midway between floor and ceiling, and bass will be unremarkable. Put them on the floor, it'll be more pronounced. Face them towards a wall or even a corner, to mimic the old school way of placing a box so it reflects back, and it'll thunder.
A lot of these goofy set ups you see online would be louder IF they were positioning the subs correctly and unfortunately teach the wrong things to newer people that just overpower the subs anyways and still come in short. Having inverted subs with the baskets exposed for example, mixed in will not get louder, etc., and yet people waste efficiency by doing that. Having subs facing each other cancels out bass, etc. etc..

Hey man, love the content. I’d love to see you get ahold of an old Butler/PPI TD series tube amp, a TD-1500 maybe. I drooled over them back in the gap, but didn’t have the cash to spend on one. I’ve never even seen one, and at the time, I worked for a shop that moved a TON of the old PPI Power series amps. Speaking of the Power series, PLEASE get ahold of a PC-2350 (later PC21400), and were juggernaut class A/B power hungry amps. I had four of these on four 15’s back in ‘99, walled in a ‘94 mustang (horrible idea) 😬. Good times. Thanks again Big D. 🤘🏽

@@josea.garcia3994 yeah... theres a good aftermarket out there these days for the RF stuff. Always liked that you could smell them amps frying..... but let em cool down and they OK... hehehehehe. I am 62, started installing age 14.... I worked for free for most of the late 70's kinda just learning and doing favors for my friends and such. Later I found work, 1981... I worked for the shops all of 6 years or so then went ROGUE. Became independent and worked for all the shops here in Hawaii as well as installing used gear for the most part because at that point.... Gear became more RELIABLE. Thus people would want their entire system pulled and PUT... add a new alarm while yer at it. These days I look at my old gear and theres ONE... AUDIOMOBILE. When I was a KID THAT was the benchmark. I worked on so many exotic cars that had them systems installed in Cali... later the car would end up here in HAWAII.... Lots of happy people here in Hawaii.... and eventually them cars would show up needing a fuse change. Usually. There was small fuses.... PICO FUSES I remember them being called... inside them amps. They usually popped cause of over driving etc... never really BLEW one myself. I still own my AUDIOMOBILE SQ system... all these years.. was made in 1981.... LOL.... Picked up a sony xm-502z (from 2003) at a thrift store about 6 years ago for i think it was 6$ lol. The right speaker terminals got crossed/ arced and theres no output, and the transistor or mosfet that it burnt costs more than what i paid originally so i tossed it in a box somewhere. It does do around 150-200 watts at 2 ohm bridged, i know cuz i blew some cheap set of 10s on them years back. Still hung onto it, just in case i wanted to repurpose it for maybe a home sub setup or something, if i had a meter and some old woofers around i'd maybe get in on this. Good luck Big D!
