First trip following Chemotherapy and Surgery for Breast Cancer

- An overnight trip to cycle through the wonderful Gap of Dunloe and climb the spectacular Purple Mountain in Kerry. The start of the Gap of Dunloe is approximately 13km from Killarney and is 6km long. I accessed Purple Mountain from the head of the gap and camped overnight at Glas Lough which is approximately half way up the mountain. This was a long awaited trip as I've been undergoing treatment for breast cancer in the previous 6 months. I felt very strong for this trip and although only 5 weeks since my surgery, I felt ready and it is important for my recovery to do more of what I love when I feel able to.
I've now completed my chemotherapy treatment plan and I've had surgery - initial scans and tissue sample results currently show no trace of cancer which is great. I've to continue taking Herceptin (targeted treatment) for a year and Tamoxifen (hormone treatment) for 5 years.
Maybe this video might show someone who gets a breast cancer diagnosis that they too may have the ability to do what they love again soon after their treatment. Doing a trip like this is a valuable part of my recovery process - to be active, out in the elements and feeling my life force increase!

I was genuinely happy to see this notification and when I saw the title immediately had tears close to my eyes, ( as my grandfather would say).
I understand the need to not film, but I’m glad you did!
I think you’ve touched more lives than you realize, and I’m certain that as you scroll through the comments you’ll see that you really have been missed!
My mom had breast cancer at the tender age of 32, she’s now 82 and continues to ride her bike and golf! Science is a wonderful thing and I can imagine the stress your situation has caused in your life!
Needless to say I am delighted to hear you’re on the mend and that you are getting back on the saddle.
UA-cam is a wonderful thing ( most of the time), and it always strikes me that I feel connections that seem disproportionate towards some content creators.
I felt it in my heart when I saw your title, and after watching the video I felt relief, that always amazes me, connections to strangers a half a world away!
Soooo, thank you for taking the camera along, for the content and the warm calm that your films bring to my turbulent life, sincerely thank you!
Take good care!
Rick
PS, I just finished dehydrating vegetarian chili for my first week long trip starting next week, scalloped potatoes and chow mien too :)
Thanks very much Rick!! 😊 I know exactly what you mean regarding the virtual connections that are formed...so alien to our rational way of being in the world! I'm very grateful for your support all the way over in Canada - amazing how it seems to work! Wishing you the very best for your upcoming trip - I'll be watching out for those dinners to see how they look 😉
Yummy
What a privilege to share this outing with you. Thank you so much for taking us along with you. I am delighted to see you keeping so well. The views were absolutely spectacular. Looking forward to sharing your next adventure😀
Thank you so much Yvonne for coming along with me 🤗 Its a stunning part of the country and great to have been there in such nice weather...I loved it! I'm feeling very well which is so good!!

Purple mountain isnt the only mountain youve conquered this past few months, you are looking great Miriam, what can i say about Killarney and the Black valley , cant say im a stranger to these parts, you have captured it beautifully, yearning to get back down. Beautiful and on a human level, nothing short of inspirational Miriam. Welcome back x
Thanks very much Colin!! Yep, I know you're a Black Valley part-time resident 😍 I hope you get back down there again soon with a big fire and food ceremony! So lovely to be able to do this one and I'm feeling very good as a result to be honest 🤩 Miss your videos Colin! x
Such a beautifully made video with stupendous scenery. Keep rambling, I love listening. Hope you continue to recover after your chemotherapy. 😊xx
Thanks very much Jennifer for watching and indulging in my rambling 😉 All going well with the recovery - slowly but surely, I’m coming back to myself. It’s a fantastic area, thanks so much 🙏
Lovely to see you again Miriam and beautiful footage-editing-presentation as always
Cheers James! It was so great to do, thank you so much for watching it and your message 😊
I’m so happy to see you out again. This video couldn’t have come at a better time. Right now I’m 2 weeks out from a colostomy operation and admittedly feeling a bit low because of the change in my body. Changes that so many of us go through. But like you I’m cancer free and that’s certainly a big plus. I’ve probably have about 6 to 8 weeks before I can get on one of my bikes again but I keep my Brompton in my living room to inspire me. I just can’t thank you enough for posting this video it has certainly lifted my spirits and has now motivated me to get out for a walk which I’m certainly allowed to do. I can only hope to be as strong as you. God bless you Miriam!!!
So sorry to hear that Doug about what you're dealing with right now and the limitations that you're experiencing 😕 Those better days for hopping on one of your bikes will arrive before long...fat lot of good that is when you can't do it right now I know. Great news about being cancer free! Delighted to hear that the video lifted your spirit in some small way - your message did the same for me! 🙏 Wishing you the very best for your procedure in 2 weeks, I hope everything goes really well for you!! xx
@@MiriamKennedy I should’ve said my operation was 2 weeks ago that’s why I’m on mend right now. Thank you for replying Miriam!
@@doug2835sorry Doug - I should have picked that up from your message! 🫢 It was pretty obvious when I read your message again! Very glad you’re out the other side of your procedure and you’re well on your way to recovery from it. May you get through these next few weeks with ease 🤞 I’ll be thinking of you!! x
Congrats !..You are so inspiring. Stay Blessed.
Thank you George! You take care too 🤗
Great to see you back out there Miriam 🙂
Thanks very much Anthony! It’s fantastic to feel able to get back out again for sure 🤩
My dear Mirriam this video made me so happy. In so glad you took camera on your first trip, because seen your truly happiness been outside again made my face so much smile. Im glad you had such a good weather. It feels like nature gaves us on our latest post mastectomy trips best gift ever and welcomed us back with open arms. Yay... Thank you ❤
Thank you Lucy!! I know you understand the emotions and motivation around this trip and the resulting satisfaction 🤗 I felt so good while doing it and since the trip I have felt even better! It did me so much good 😎 That weather window coincided with me feeling strong so I went for it!! It still makes me smile to think about it. I’m looking forward to seeing your video - your trailer looked absolutely fantastic!! Thanks again my friend!! xx

Cheers Sandy!! My body started to feel so much better in the last 10 days or so...great that I could get out and about again, I loved it! 5 months was a very long time in reflection. Thanks for your lovely words, I will certainly try 🙏
Increible que puedas hacer ese tipo de rutas despues de una terapia tan agresiva. Eres un ejemplo para otras personas. Si se puede!!!!!!!!👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Grazie! È molto bello sapere che qualcun altro potrebbe pensarlo. Sarebbe carino!! ❤️
Aw Miriam. This full video just made me smile from ear to ear. So proud of you and warriored though the last few months. Truly amazing Miram. Stunning weather you got. Those Drone shots you got we spectacular. What an incredible country we live in. Hopefully we get to meet up soon for a camp. Purple Mountain is a lovely spot. You should get a camo tarp for the bike/body hiding 😂 Incredibe adventure and brilliantly edited vlog. 👏
Cheers Martin!! An incredible country we live in is right! Surely we’ll manage a camp in the Summer months 😉 Delighted the drone shots turned out as they did as I really couldn’t do too much with the wind. The weather definitely helped show the place off and I was chuffed to do this trip at last - thanks!! 🤩
My cheeks are sore!!!!! Youve given me sore cheeks!!!!! I didnt realise I was grinning the whole way through that stunning video. Its truly good to see you back on the trail pal. So, so, so, so good. Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful. Words are not enough.
Your poor cheeks Alyn 😂 Delighted I got to do this trip - an utter pleasure!! And now for the darts 🎯🤭
First of all...excellent rambling as always, Miriam! Secondly, what a wonderful video. The drone footage looked amazing, and those sunset images with the clouds scudding through the mountains are outstanding. I can see why you are glad you brought the camera with that weather. So glad to see you back here after your ordeals. And on another note, congratulations on the MountainViews award of best video contribution last year. You got my vote :) Thank you for the inspirational work. I am looking forward to my annual trip in July to north Mayo and also a first visit to the Tipperary mountains hopefully, if we get any Summer at all this time! God bless and good luck with your adventures this year.
Thank you Jim! Your annual trip will be rolling around very soon 😲 The weather thankfully played ball for me on Day 1 in Kerry - so nice to get those views along the Gap and up the mountain…a lot better than I could have imagined! So nice to be able to get out and about again, I’m still revelling in the satisfaction of it! Cheers about the MountainViews award - it was lovely to receive!! 🤗
Hi Miriam so glad and happy to see you back out in the beautiful landscape. I was so happy for you when I saw the notification wish you well and very best of luck your a real inspiration well done and thank you very much for sharing your beautiful video and lovely scenery in Co. Kerry

Outstanding Miriam , you’re an inspiration. Picking a fantastic place too . Continued recovery and many more adventures ❤️🇮🇪Atb Tony
Thanks very much Tony! Down in your neck of the woods 😉 Such a great part of the country for sure!! 😎
How good to see you again Miriam! I was thinking of you every now and then the last months, hoping you are getting the treatments you need to fight successfully against this awful mean disease. F**k cancer, but glory to modern science, medicine and doctors. You look so well and happy, thank you for this wonderful video, another one that lets us just dream and enjoy. ❤
Thanks very much Birgit! I’m feeling very good thankfully 😉 It was so lovely to get out again for a trip and to play with the camera again! The treatment to date has been working well - I’ve still a bit more to do but I’m hanging in there!! Thanks so much for your message 😊
So happy you see you!!! And you are looking so well. Great trip and a great video. Looking forward to more. See you soon!!!
Awwww thank you 🙏 Cheers!!
You’re amazing the way you make your way through life 🙌 I hope your doing well 😊 another amazing video ❤
Thanks for that! I'm doing very well thanks - all the beter for this trip!! 😊
Great to see you back at it Miriam.
Gavin
Thanks very much Gavin!! 🤗
So happy for you Miriam. The wheels are turning!
Thank you Jen 🤗 The chain is oiled and the tyres are pumped!!
Aw Miriam sooooo so lovely to watch this! There's a New Day... Made me cry. xxxxxx
Thanks Susanna 😍 That's lovely that the song moved you, I was conscious that it might seem a bit twee to some! 🙃 Hope you're keeping well! xx
Lovely to see you back out and about Miriam , a nice trip and 😮well deserved full Irish at the end 💚🤙😊
Thanks David!! 🤗 It was so good - another cyclist joined me at the table so I didn’t get to show the food off…it was all polished off with gusto!! 😇
What a great first trip after more than 5 months of treatments, and I'm sure a boatload of worries - I smiled all the way through this video - both times lol, I watched it about a week ago, got busy with work etc and knew I wanted to watch it again before commenting. The Purple Mountain! What a fantastic name, and what a fantastic camp, you're made of stern tough stuff mind Miriam: bike, hide bike like a body, hike, pitch, then hike some more - then those view from the summit! Holy moley, if anyone ever deserved scenes like that, then I'm so chuffed it was you, absolutely jaw drop gorgeous with those cloud inversions and those views. You're still the only person on YT whose drone footage I love to see, it looked windy as owt, but well done on getting the shots you did. Great stuff Miriam, and the joy of being outdoors shone through on your face. Smiley all the way through.
On a side note can I ask what dehydrator you use? Is it easy enough to do? I've been thinking about getting one for a while now, but all the people I know who have them (and that's not many) only use them for meat dishes.
Looking forward to your next adventure, you do choose some amazing places to visit X Well done to you, to Brompton and to Purple Mountain, absolutely epic 💚
Thanks so much Donna!! Yep - I was a tad bit happy in this one!! 🤗 I got out for a good long hike today with two guys I know and that was fab to do also, I had my gaiters on and there were sections that were so damn mucky. I realised it’s been so long since I was out in muck!! 😂 I effectively missed the winter in the mountains - the mud remains though!! Delighted you enjoyed some of the scenery in this one - months in the planning in my mind, I knew I wanted to bring the camera to this area for quite a while so it was great to scratch the itch in the end! My dehydrator is a 5 tray Excalibur - like you I thought about getting one for a good while before finally doing it. It makes so much sense for multi day trips where you’re not going to be near a base to access other food. It takes a long time (8-10 hours) to dehydrate meals or individual ingredients etc but it’s great to be able to bring home cooked food to the mountains without all the weight! Since I got it, I really do make use of it and almost all my main meals for camping have been dehydrated at home at this stage. Occasionally I bring something else but I definitely do make use of it! They seem to be more common in the US or New Zealand where people tend to do longer trips and need to carry more food. Another great little useful toy to have! 😉 Cheers Donna!! Hope you’re well xx
@@MiriamKennedy Sometimes it's nice to have a right mucky old hike - other times it's awful 🤣
I'm so pleased you took your camera on this one. There's lots of times I don't film the stuff I do, but sometimes it's nice to have the camera to natter on to, and to record stuff to maybe watch back a few years down the line. Thanks for the Excalibur information. I'm going to ponder a while longer, watch some YT vids and decide nearer pay day. They look like good machines and I love the idea of taking my own homemade food out on trips in a lightweight dehydrated form. Off work with a tweaked back o no camping for me this week 😪 but I'll make good use of the time with a bit of dehydration research lol. Thanks Miriam, catch you on the next one xx
Sorry to hear that Donna! Hope the back heals quickly for you…happy plotting and scheming in the dehydrating world 🤩
Fantastic! loved it... great you're on the mend and good luck with more adventures! atb...Sinco
Thanks so much Sinco!! 🤗 To say I was happy to be out there…couldn’t help but be thrilled!! Thanks for your lovely message 😍
Miriam, a beautiful place and beautiful weather to return for this long awaited trip☀😊 A tough looking pull up to the head of the Gap and your bike hiding skills aren't too bad👍It is hard to beat a good camp spot beside a mountain lough, especially when it has spectacular views thrown in. Reward definitely comes with challenge, well done on getting to the summit👣and those further views with the cloud rolling in. Good to capture memories and to have space for yourself in such a beautiful place👍 I have heard that those 'pedal steps' cover some serious ground😊
Cheers Gerry! My bike hiding skills are especially lacking when tired…thankfully it worked out 😉 So satisfying to get back out again in nature and the wild..it filled me right up! Wonderful scenery alright and thankfully the weather played ball. It was a lot of fun to do! Cheers for your message and happy planning for your next adventure! ⛺️
Such a great adventure Miriam beautiful scenery too and I loved the music. Didn’t realize you had surgery sorry, you’re an inspiration to a lot of people Take it easy for a few days and good luck in everything
Thank you Annie! A wonderful adventure for sure 🤗 I've taken it nice and easy today and I'll certainly take your advice for the coming days too!

The Lady is back yippee, good to see you Miriam in fine spirits. The views are spectacular and colours despite the cloud cover on the mountains but it did give it a magical feel.
Aww thank you Paul! Those views from up top were spectacular and along the gap...a feast for my eyes! That magic was definitely palpable 😊

Great to see you back in action Miriam , looking fit and well. That’s was a fine trip on the bike then up the mountain , I did worry for your bike tho 😂 hiding it away down the hill !! TFS atb Dave ⛺️🚲👍
Cheers Dave! Thankfully the bike thieves weren’t out spotting me that day. I like the idea of further bike and mountain camps 😊 This one was much needed - I especially realised afterwards how much I’d needed that boost of wildness! Thanks so much for watching and your message / I hope all is well with you!!
I cannot express how happy I felt to see your big smile and the big views on this video :). Take care of yourself first always Miriam and thank you for including us when it feels right in the delicate balance between filming and not.

Aww thank you!! It was so lovely to get out again, I really enjoyed it 🤗 Thanks so much for your message and I hope you're getting out and about too 😎
Fáilte ar ais Miriam. Glad you decided to ease yourself gently back :) with a trip up the Gap of Dunloe!-. I got into Dublin on Monday morning and you must have picked the one perfect 24h weather window for this trip-when you passed a woman with a wide brimmed sunhat on, i knew we'd see some lovely views. The drone shots were stunning-your mission to show people the beauty of the little island totally fulfilled. And for everyone who know what you've been through, I think we saw a little of what that trip meant to you. Thanks for these lovely images. Legend!
Ha Brendan! Yes - no point in pushing myself needlessly 🫢 A gentle cycle and little hike to test the water! 😂 Yep, Monday it was! The Sunday was fab too countrywide but I’d made plans to visit a pal in Wexford on the Sunday (I didn’t cycle I promise 😉) I booked the train on Saturday night when I saw the potential of the nice weather being here in the early part of the week knowing I mightn’t get another lucky break like that for a while! Hope you have a nice stay while you’re over and that some nice weather returns!! It did me the world of good to get out and do this - a nice way to celebrate feeling so well 😎 Cheers Brendan, lovely to hear from you!
Great video. Your joy is palpable! Thanks for the beautiful work, as always.
Thank you Randy!! Yep - I couldn't hide my happy camper feeling out there 😁 Thanks so much!!
great to see you back out Miriam, Looks like the Kingdom pulled out all the stops for your trip...
and to make your comeback on the 12th highest peak ⛰ (MV 100) in the country,, fair play....👍👏
Cheers Eddie! A little plan I'd had for a while so it was great to finally get to do it. I now know I can combine some cycling and hiking into the future again 😊 A lot for me to do in one way, but worth it in the end!! 😂
My first time watching one of your videos for some time and what a beauty it was! Thank you.
You are, I know, aware of the UA-cam channel of "Susanna Thornton", but if your followers have not found her channel, they might well enjoy it. She is an English woman. A cancer survivor. A bikepacker and wild camper who rides a Brompton on short and sometimes longer trips within Britain and Europe......
Thanks Paul! Yes I’m a big fan of Susanna’s trips and videos. She’s always an inspiring watch. Thanks so much for watching this trip, I enjoyed it so much 🤗
Hey Miriam so glad to see you out and about again, we missed your brilliant smile and videos
Thanks very much Mark, so great to get out and about again!! 🤗
Janey mack our favourite is back! Delighted to see you back Miriam and looking so well. You came up that hill like Stephen Roche fair play to ya. You haven't lost the knack for creating beautiful videos that I could (and do) watch over and over again. What a beautiful spot to camp and you're definitely making my wish list longer. Hope we see many more of them in the future and you enjoy a full recovery. You really do bring something special to the party !
Sláinte Mhaith Miriam🙂
Thanks so much Joe!! Lovely to hear from you 🤗 It did me the world of good to scratch that itch and get out and do this trip. Basking in the memory of it now and it'll keep me nourished for a while. Wishing you well also!! 🤩

So great to see you back Miriam. Your resilience is amazing and your joy at being out again was clear. Looking forward to seeing more this summer. I’m about to start the west highland way in a couple of weeks and I’ll also be using the Durston x mid 1 , only had it up in the garden so far so looking forward to using it for real.
Thanks very much Bob! 😊 Happy planning for your West Highland Way trip - that should be fun! The X-Mid 1 is fab but the inner is definitely narrow…a fantastic lightweight tent though, I hope it serves you well! Thanks very much for your message, lovely to hear from you!
ah so good to see you well and out doing what you love Miriam 🙂
Thanks David - so lovely to be able to do it again for sure 😎
Lovely to see you out and about, I’ve always enjoyed your adventures…I rather missed them..❤

Thanks Norman - very nice to hear you enjoyed watching this video! It was a great trip for me to do, I thoroughly enjoyed it - wonderful for my spirit!! Thanks very much for your message 😊
Miriam absolutely delighted to see you back and most importantly to see you well. Incredible to see also the happiness in your face whilst up in the mountains as you said feeling at home in unfamiliar terrain. The footage also absolutely stunning and especially in kerry omg. Thank you for sharing and letting us being part of your first outdoor adventure 🧡 looking forward to the next one. See you on the trail Miriam 😊🧡
Thanks Jens! It was so bloody good to get out there to some wild spaces again. I really needed it - I don't think I was aware how much I needed it...the smile was possibly an unconscious response to doing what I needed to do at last!! So glad I got to do it 🤩
Thank you so much for this update its great to see you looking so well, I’ve binge watched all of your videos and was desperate to see how you got on with your treatment, I know how hard it is to get through. You’re an inspiration, I’ve been a recluse since my wife passed away but have now bought a Brompton! First trip shortly hopefully it will stop raining lol.
I'm so sorry to hear about your wife's passing - what a loss that must be. Fair play to you for getting yourself a Brompton and I hope you do get out for some adventures with it. The bloody rain has been something else...surely we'll get some more little breaks in the coming months!! 🤞🙃 Many thanks for your message and your concern, I appreaciate it ❤️
It's great to see you back Miriam, looking strong and upbeat as I knew you would be!
I always really like your videos, down to earth and very casual.
Mrs Paddler went through an awful few years of hospital blunders and misery from breast cancer, but she's recovered just fine.
Yours and Susanna's videos always make for a weighty watch for me, knowing what goes on behind the scenes.
Another great video Miriam, thanks very much for that and all the best in going forward 🙂🙏👍
Hi Tony - god, so sorry to hear about Mrs Paddlers challenges, that sounds very rough! Wonderful to hear that she has recovered well!! ❤️ Thanks so much for your lovely message Tony!!

Hi Miriam. Yes, a catalogue of errors, some of which you couldn't make up, and she was a lot tougher about it than I was!
All good now 😀
Thank you very much 🙂
That was inspirational, good luck with everything.
That’s lovely of you to say!! Thanks very much 😊
So pleased to see you up and out again. Your enthusiasm is rightly contagious!

Thanks very much Denis!! It did me the world of good to get back out again 🤗 Such a beautiful area to whet my appetite for adventure again…I’ve been riding the good feelings of this trip for weeks afterwards!! Thanks so much for your lovely message - I hope all is well with you! 😊
Beautiful lady, beautiful views, precious memories. So, on one level nothing has changed - for we subscribers.
I did not know about this. I had noticed you had not appeared in my feed but had not really sought your channel out as I do not bicycle and tour - only hill and mountain.
I am so pleased you brought along your camera on your first trip post treatment. One of the best things I have seen on utube by far.
I so look up to you its reduculous.😊 Respect. JMO.
Thanks very much JMO!! It was a fantastic thing for me to do - while editing, it felt like an epic journey filled with symbolism. When setting out I had no idea it would turn out like that of course. I deliberately included the cancer story in the title as I felt it was completely relevant and really it was what this trip was about. I did 2 other trips where I mentioned the cancer story a few months ago but I intentionally didn't mention anything about it in the title as I felt I'd be just 'looking for views' if I did. This time - it didn't matter to me, I felt totally comfortable and knew the cancer story was such a part of the energy behind this trip! Glad there was a mountain for you to savour anyway!! 🤩
What an inspiration you are as part of my recovery. So good to see you looking so well. Onwards!
Hi Dick - best wishes to you too along your road of recovery also! I've been feeling really well for the last 10 days or so...great to be able to get out again at last for sure 😎
Only one word to describe this video, location and you “beautiful” Keep going Miriam! Chapeau!
Thanks very much Jonathan 🙏 It was fantastic to be out again...cheers for watching it and your message!!
Oh Miriam I am overjoyed to see that you are out camping again. Watching your previous videos encouraged me to get a Durston mid x 2. You should be on commission. So good to see you are well enough to climb a mountain. Thank you. You are inspirational.
Hi Brenda - lucky you having the X-Mid 2 as the X-Mid 1 is definitely tight on space in the inner!! My tent was a total mess when I first got in to it on Monday night...it seemed to take me ages to sort my things out 🤭 It was great to feel well enough to do this trip at last and to enjoy it as much as I did...it did me the world of good!
Wonderfull seeing you back Miriam, on a lovely little adventure.
Your infectious smile as always says it all, a real pleasure to watch. ATB ❤ 😉
Thanks Michael! I do seem to smile a lot on these videos, I don't think I generally smile that much in life 🙃
Miriam this is just so wonderful to see and get to share with you. Really awesome, looking forward to many more! All the very best to you. 😎💚✌
Thanks Michael for taking the time to watch it!! Wishing you all the best also 😊
So glad to see you back out doing what you love ❤️
Great video 👌
