Normally I wouldn’t recommend a 600CC Supersport to anyone, but it must be said, that not all 600 supersports are the same. I started my riding career on a 2015 CBR500R. Great bike, totally easy to ride and handle, and enough power to ride in any condition and not be bored. Literally 5 months after lots of real world practice, I decided to buy a 2009 CBR600RR, which folks had always warned me not to get. Lo and behold, I realized, that the CBR600RR in particular is a stupid easy and forgiving bike to ride. There is very little power below about 8K and it’s all so linear, so an accidental throttle application won’t kill you. At about ~410lbs curb weight, the bike is easy to manage and cheap / reliable enough to fix if you drop it. Basically, you CAN start off on a 600CC supersport if you are mature, have self-control and put in effort to hone your skills. I have the same opinion about older Yamaha R6s, which didn’t make ANY power until like 10K RPM, which means you could just stay out the powerband and easily and keep yourself alive. Again, it’s not a recommendation, but I wish people didn’t scare me so much online into buying a “starter bike,” when I could’ve just as easily learned on a CBR600RR. However, If you have no self-control over your ego and actions, don’t ride a sportbike period.
I started on a 2015 cbr500r for my first street bike also! Well...I'm still on it. I've had it abput 3 weeks now, put over 1k on, &am already bored with it. It's a great bike, don't get me wrong, got it with 2106 miles on it. But I've already out grown it. Maybe if I started with a decent 650 I would still be satisfied with it. But now I'm looking at 600s, along with 650s now. I've just started seriously looking, &talked to the place where I bought the cbr from&one guy says go for the ninja 636, the other says either the ninja 650, or the z650. So I'm going to try them out&see if the 650 seems like I can get at least another year from, or if the 600 will be better for me.
I hope the fact that I would only trust myself to start on an r6 or cbr600 and not even touch a zx6r or gsxr600 is maturity enough lol. I’ve been looking at those bikes for a while and think I’m gonna go for the r6 but I want to just rent some 400 for a couple of rides before I actually buy a 600
I started on a 2011 Ninja Zx6r and I’ve had little trouble. I took the first month and worked on handling and basics in town and on open lots. If you take the time to know the bike and handle it I think 600s are a fair starting point. I still would not recommend, it but it is manageable. It really comes down to the individuals self control and respect of the machine.
Okay cool but I live in England so I have a 125. And then in a year I can only have a 300. And then two years after that I can pick however I want to die.
125's are good fun, all bikes are good i'd even be happy riding 80 cc. I rode a yz 85 large wheel few years ago it was powerful and tall for an 80cc bike
You think thats bad. In Portugal we have a 50cc license at 14 yeras old, a 125cc license(with 11KW limit) at 16 years old, a 35kw license with no displacement limit at 18 years old and if we have either the 125cc or 35 KW license we are lucky enough to be able to take the full exam at the age of 21, if not we can only have the full license at the age of 24. I have a 125 cc license for almost 6 month, have already put more that 7K km on my bike(virago 125) and I can say that after driving the 535 version it feels that the 125 is too slow. In my opinion the 125 license should be replaced with the 35KW one. This sucks....
Picking the 600 is a commitment. If you go into it knowing you're sacrificing comfort, utility, and storage space while also having to contend with a quirky powerband, you'll have a good time. If you buy a 600 just because it looks and sounds cool while not having a passion for it's quirk, you'll probably hate it.
I went the non-traditional route and got a 0cc bike as my first. I ride a Zero SR and it's been a pretty accommodating first bike with no clutch or gear shifting, but it really makes you respect throttle control because if you're too heavy on the throttle in a corner all that torque can easily break that rear wheel loose. Still though, it's a little tame. Should've started with a hayabusa.
Was looking at a Zero SR/F or Kawaski ninja zx6r for my first bike might get the kawaski used first then buy a sf/r for my second bike. thoughts Im an insanely good car but Im worried that I may not be a natural at bikes like I am with cars.. thoughts on what I should do?
@@TheFreshkidd619 I feel the same about riding vs car driving. I went with a cheap 125 to start with, learnt slow maneuvers and the basics and after 3 months felt ready to upgrade. Definitely worth it.
I'm an old fart but I have ridden an R1. Yeah, fun for a short time. I still have a couple thumpers (kick start only) a couple of cruisers (one a full dresser) and an R3. Believe it or not the thumpers are the ones I enjoy the most. That being said I believe that for some a 600cc bike as a starter is fine. For others it's a death sentence. People are different. Some are confident and aggressive others need time to work up and still some others should not get closer than a hundred feet to any kind of bike.
Yeah it depends on what bike, but personally, if I was a beginner and was worried about controlling the power of a 600 I would buy a 600 and get it ECU restricted, and when I get bored I would just get it derestricted and Its like getting a whole nee bike.
I'm a new rider with nearly 0 experience. I just bought a Kawasaki Vulcan S 650cc. It has 60 hp and is very beginner friendly by beeing forgiving and easy to handle. Although it weights about 450 pounds it doesnt feel heavy and is super easy to flat foot. Pardon me my english, I'm from Switzerland
I bought a 2003 Honda cbr600rr for my first bike just over a month ago and all I can say is I absolutely love it... I’ve never scared myself too bad on it.

TBH this felt more like a sport bike vs other bikes debate. After all all 300cc Sport bikes are in reality more like naked bikes with fairings (except for that aggressive RC 390). And real sport bikes are just well, shitty for the street, beginner or not. Would have been more interested in a 300cc vs 600cc naked bike comparison for beginners. MT-07, SV-650, CB650R, Z650 or an R3, 390, Z400 etc.

@@AT2Productions Thanks for the reminder! I shoulda known better as my first bike back after a 20 year moto hiatus was an 06 S2R800 and I was very much into the whole Monster scene. Damned fine bikes, and weren really the maintenance hogs many thought they were (at least mine wasnt!). But even the "small" Monsters tended to have higher price than the SV. Regarding maintenance again: a SV valve adjust was nearly as expensive as a desmodue, and if you didnt rev the snot out of it, you could push the interval out.
First bike was a Honda 250 and was fun to ride. Got back what I actually paid for it when I sold it. Your first bike is what it is “your first bike” don’t be concerned with anything else but to get something manageable that you won’t get hurt on that you can sharpen your skills to get something more fun and expensive.
I'm still riding my beginner bike, a 2002 CB600S. I took my lessons on a cbr500, but I don't like the 2-cylinder bikes. 600 4 cyl has such a sweet ride. I can recommend it to every beginner. :) great video
I bought mt 07 as a starter bike. Altough it is locked to 35kW because of driver licenses we have in europe. But I am loving every second on the bike at it is great starter bike for Euro Bros that can ride it from 18
I understand that 300s supposedly aren’t meant for being pushed to the limits constantly but I feel confident that if I had one for a lil to get used to I could tear it up. I only weigh like 130 so the power to weight ratio would be insane
I barely even consider power into the equation when I say beginners should stay away from 600's. Any beginner can stick to low revs and half of the super sports have rider modes these days. The touchy brakes and precise shifting are more likely to get them into trouble. Beginners grab brakes and shift sloppily, and doing either in the wrong situation on a 600 will spill you. Even with ABS and a slipper clutch. IMO people who recommend 600's to "grow into" have taken for granted just how far along they are, and they have forgotten how big a learning curve on bikes are. Add the mentioned ergonomics and heavier weight into the mix with a beginner who is extra nervous because they started with an expensive bike, and it's just a bad recipe. Starter bikes are nerve-wracking enough to start on for beginners and you'll probably be able to sell your starter bike from craigslist for the same $2000 you bought it for, so it's not like you're down anything for learning on a starter bike. And it's not like you won't have fun either; 250's/300's are super light and flickable and you get to rev the piss out of them, and you'll be more inclined to since you won't be out much if you hafta lay'erdown.
Yup, especially these days with advanced injection, bikes' power is smooth and controllable (Unlike my 1st Gen injection '98 750 SRAD which had the knack of trying to launch you out of a corner with just a hair more throttle, I also still hear the horror stories of older R1 riders from time to time)
Well that depends on a Beginner if they have a Brain and respect the bike it's fine to ride a 600cc for start. But if it's a F*ckin moron give it a Grom.
It depends on the person. I started out on a 600cc and I was fine but before that even tho I had zero bike experience I regularly take my M3 to the track and I have a race license so I was kinda mechanically inclined to pick up riding quick. Anybody else going from zero to a 600 will probably drop it the first time they ride it lol
I think it all comes down to the person I started on a 2013 r6 and I’m doing just fine and loving it, my buddy started on a Kawasaki 650 and doesn’t want to go up at all, another friend started on a 300 and feels like he made the right choice. Know yourself and go with your gut. I knew I’d be fine and I was respect the bike and drive safe.
I began teaching my wife to ride about a year an a half ago. I started her out on a Suzuki 300, she progressed quickly, she wanted to move up to a 600 four months after she started riding. I held her off on that making sure she had enough experience an seat time before moving up to a 600. A month ago I was finally comfortable with her stepping up and we got her a Gsx'er 600, at first it was a little much for her. So we selected a lower power setting until she got used to the weight and response of the bike. We gradually increase the power settings until now she on full power mode, she's doing great. People want to move to fast stepping up to a 600 or liter bike before they have the skills necessary to control the power. I wish I could've learned to ride like that, but I had to be Billy Badass and started on a Ninja 900 back in the 80s. The worst bike in the world to learn on, had alot of bumps, bruises and scrapes but I learned the ride.
@@cjfruge9294 Lotta fun man. I actually learned to ride 2 years before on a Ninja 300 an SV650 then finally was able to get my own. During the riding sessions on those bikes I'm sure it added up to less than 24 hours. The R6 riding position is very aggressive compared to other bikes an pushes a lot of engine heat. The GSXR is more Comfortable.
I'm a new rider starting on a ninja zx600r Idk how tf i do it but so far so good, i just try to stay away from every car on the road if possible, only ride hard when the streets are open for me to if not i keep it at the speed limit, not worth risking my life or wrecking the bike.

I started to learn 4 months back on a 2018 Ducati supersport , now I moved over to 2018 Aprilia 1100 v4 tuono. People advised against it but it didn’t seem to matter. As long as you know your limits and value your life you should be okay. I’m still a beginner rider but i respect my machine and value my life even more.
Just bought a 2005 busa, never owned a motorcycle before, never have even driven a motorcycle before and pushed it to 160 k/m/h just yesterday on a 12 mile straightaway. Still here, but honestly, probably not for long.
I always go on vacation with my dad on the Yamaha Thunderrace 1000. We drive a whole week Everyday day. We only drive trough mountain passes. Now that's hard even though im on the back. Your position on the bike matters.
The first bike I rode was a zx6r and I'm still alive. I grew up riding dirt bikes and quads so I thought I knew what I was doing but street bikes are vastly different. If you just stay at low rpms you will be fine since the most power is made above 8k rpms. Ride smart and safe and you can learn on a 600.
It's not even controversial; You SHOULD start on a 250, but COULD start on a 600. I had a blast on my Ninja 250 and enjoyed every minute on it. I'm absolutely convinced I wouldn't have enjoyed my current ZX6R as a starter bike.
If you can't ride slow in a 600cc in the streets, you should never ride one, no matter if you are a new rider or experienced, you have to ride slow in the streets on both cases
Finally someone that thinks the same way than me , if a 600c.c bike was driven until 10k rpm only produces around 80hp, its enought to enjoy and have fun and even the engine is getting less stress than a 300/400c.c. The breaks and suspensions are exponencial better and that provides a safer drive. The drive is less demanding if you drive until 9/10krpm of course.
Carl Christopher Calo 650 is different than the 636 or zx6r it’s a twin and is MUCH less “jumpy” if you get a 650 you won’t have any issues it’s like a 300 with more torque
I just got my first bike. It's a 2004 Suzuki S40 Boulevard with a 650 single. It's got enough power to get you on the highway and then some for passing. It's not murderously fast and it definitely won't throw you off the saddle. All for 2000 bucks, I do recommend.
First bike: passed test and a week later picked up my 2007 Triumph Sprint ST 1050 ABS. Loving it still. Riding for just over 2 years now. Done over 28,000 miles since Nov 2016.
Hey Yammie! Motovlogger from the Philippines here. This is a hot subject here in our country. Most of our roads are not capable of stretching out a liter bike, so these middleweights are most favored. Go get that well deserved 1M subs!
JanggoMoto 1911 Living in the PI until I was 12, I bet it would be fun for me to go back there and ride my motard. Those tight, bumpy(lubak-lubak) roads would be ideal for my supermoto to ride on.
@E2Moto, you would be surprised that you would be needing something more powerful. City & country roads have improved a whole lot. But definitely, a supermoto still has got lots of suspension travel to gobble all those pesky potholes & breaks on the road. Ride safe.
@@Janggo1911 I can agree with that. It's been 17 years since I've last been in the PI, but my parents flew there about 5 years ago, and looking at their pics there, the whole country did improve a lot. What's the average highway speed there?
Long time. 100kph would be fairly average. You can get up to 160-200kph on some parts but mostly, there are just too many obstacles on the road and each can just touch you a bit and you go flying off the road at that speeds.
JanggoMoto 1911 My motard will be perfectly fine with that highway speed. I ride my DRZ at 80 MPH(128 KPH) in the freeways here in California, and my bike can go faster, but I prefer not to stress the engine too much.
I think the power curve of the R6 is why it's a perfect bike to learn on. Under 12k rpm it's very tame and manageable. As you gain some confidence and skill, you can simply start pushing the revs and you already have a very quick and sporty bike. Most importantly clutch timing and shifting mistakes wont throw you off the bike when you're a total noob. I thought it was great to learn on. And eventually the lack of torque makes it feel slow and when that happens there are plenty of litre machines to buy:)

First bike: 50cc, top speed 70km/h, had an absolute blast for a year. Second bike 88cc, 20hp and top speed of 120km/h, was and still is really fun to use, had it now for 3 years. Third bike 125cc, 30hp. Feels like I won't need a new bike for the next 2 years.
I'm getting a 500cc at least as my first bike since I already have some experience on my dad's 125cc and I want something I can grow into and I won't have to change it in a year or two
@@seymourbands1097 just dont be nuts and take it easy. Practice one thing at a time and let time and distance acumulate. Dont push your limits, practice at your level and rythm. I started on an Yamaha MT-07 (689cc) as my first bike 3 years ago and even though i got the typical "you're crazy" comments from some people, i really had no trouble at all. Not all 600+cc bikes are made to race like Yammie says in the video, I think he was really taking about the SuperBikes category only (which are the ones that get 110+ horsepower too, mine gets only to 74).
As a 69 yr old returning rider i strongly considered a 250/300 mainly commuting speed limits here mainly 60/80 km/h but i ended up with a 2012 cbf600s in a pristine condition. at a price much cheeper than the smaller bikes, i though 76 hp is enough and an overkill, but busa man put my mind in a different perspective, always good to listen to the" clever" people out there.
Great breakdown, I’ve been riding R1s on the track for years with a 27 inch inseam (do the math) and love the power. Just bought a 2023 ZX 6 and do appreciate the ergonomic difference. The only issue now is getting “liter biked” out of corners by my buddies. Work harder on the brakes and through the corners, then watch them pull away in the straight.
beginners get a used bike that not very expensive so u dont get bummed out when u drop it or lay it down in a corner. engine 250-650cc (1 or 2 cylinders) never mind what make and model , ride the crap out of it in every gear and get something better when u are more experienced as a rider cheers
My first bike was a Honda CG125 then when I passed my test for my full license I went for a classic Suzuki RG500. Two-stroke madness! I don't think 300cc and 600cc should be the only options for "First bikes" hell the bikes I got after my RG500 was the CBR954RR and the Hornet 900. It all should depend on your ability as a rider and how sensible you are. Some of my friends think I was stupid to skip the middle weight bikes altogether but I've never dropped them. My CG125 has been dropped more times than I can count however. And my friends have either written off their 600s or killed themselves on them because... Well let's be honest they were over confident and stupid.
For everyone who wants to know. A 600 isnt too big to start out on. Its not much difference then a 300 until you crack the throttle open. The biggest danger of the 600 is that you can get over your head quick with a whole lot of speed before you are ready. Its really easy to hit 100+ mph on a 600 where the smaller bikes will top out a little after that. The issue is that some people will act stupid and get themselves hurt or killed when given that kind of power. Starting out on a smaller bike may give some advantages to an absolute newb, a tamer motor with low end torque is better for learning the clutch and learning to ride in traffic. The weight is a little lower, but honestly you should be taking it easy for a little while until you figure everything out anyways. Newbs often mess up by using their front brake when they should be using the back (grass, gravel, turning lowspeed stops) newbs often get to tense and force their bikes to wreck because the rider is nervous. (You gotta loosen up that grip yo) Let the bike do what it wants. It wants to stand up and go straight. A 600cc is a beast of a machine no doubt, but it is possible to cruise around on them. Also as yammi says, you are gonna drop your first bike alot, ecspecially if you are into stunting and drifting through yards and stuff, and just having fun. I learned on dirtbikes, which are awesome because you can drop them without messing them up usually. If its your first bike, get a cheap one that is already seen its share of drops. The ninja 400, cbr 500, are both good bikes. They are both plenty fast, fun, and excellent beginner bikes. My friend got a ninja 400 to learn on and its excellent, and I got a cbr500 for running around town on, but I have other bikes too. I like both of them, and they are excellent. Nowhere near as fast as a gsxr1000 but plenty fast to outrun 460hp cop cars or anybody else, if you know how to ride. Take your time and get into bikes at a good pace. You don't have to jump straight into a 600rr at first as that is a bit much for a beginner, but you certainly can if you value your life and you take it easy. If you have some experience riding though, maybe a year or so, a 600 is an excellent first street bike. The biggest problem with the bigger bikes for beginners is that most people who start out riding them never get good at riding in the same way someone who starts out on a 250 dirtbike, or ninja 250r will. I see people all the time on 600s and 1000s who cant even hang with a 400 because they dont know how to use the power correctly, and hold their curves smooth. Many people have been riding for years and still suck, because they started out on a 100+ hp bike. Its hard to improve when you are always scared, and you keep having close calls, almost running off the road, or running into the back of someone. The best flow is dirtbike -> ninja 400-cbr600 -> zx 636-cbr1000 - > the other 1000 rrs.
People are speaking on 600’s as if they are only track bikes. I get it. 600’s are made for riders to move at high speeds, however that’s like people making a UA-cam Channel, telling you or suggesting cars like HellCats and Corvettes are not good for a regular commute only racing. … So I shouldn’t buy a Vetter unless I’m taking it to the track. JMO
Seating position was the most important decision for me when I bought my CBR650F. She's my first, and I'm still in love with her. Power was secondary to comfort, because my thought was if I'm not comfortable, then I'm not going to learn to ride properly. Besides, a few well spent dollars, an exhaust, and power commander later, and I'm not racing R6's, but they aren't getting away that fast either.
Yam-man, your videos are always interesting and entertaining, but this one is so instructional as well! Good things to think about for my next bike and what I want to use it for. You go way beyond simple specs or "should I get the one with 140 or 150 tires on the rear?" type of useless questions. Keep on doin' what you do.

I have a 2015 aprilia rsv4 rr as my first bike, and ive been riding around 2 years and no issues, respect the bike and you will be fine getting a 1000 as a first bike. with that said i have 8 lvl traction control, 3 driving modes, abs, wheelie control and launch control so its a easy bike :)
In Ireland there are different categories of bike licences. AM, A1, A2 and A. The first 3 are generally for young guys because these categories are for mopeds (AM) and low cc bikes or restricted bikes. If you are 24 years of age or older you can apply directly for the A licence which allows you to ride any bike you want but here is the thing. You have to pass your test on a bike of at least 600cc.
I have a 2006 Suzuki katana 600, which I think is a perfect road bike. It has 80 horsepower, so it's not crazy, and it's comfortable enough to ride for long distances, plus decently sporty.
in this range, just pick whatever you feel physically comfortable on :) It will take a lot longer to grow out of a 500cc (Honda cb/cbr 500?), and the power is very manageable. Most instructors use 500 or 650 cc bikes to teach new riders and it's no problem at all :) Just remember that a bad rider can kill themselves on any bike if you don't pay attention to your surroundings.
Depends on what you're looking for a first bike. You want a bike that will teach you best, get a 250, but if you want to be a bit more utilitarian by getting a beginner bike that will take a while to outgrow and can take you in freeways, get a 500 preferably ones with 2-cylinders.
unless you start on a Gixxer 600. Rider modes allow you to bring the power down 50%-65%. it's got 125 HP, so with modes you can choose to only have 60 or 65 HP, a little less than your average 650 which are often considered some of the best beginner bikes
After jumping to a 1000 from a 300 as my second bike i am now fully convinced that this whole "start on a 300/600" thing is full of sh*t. Its a ploy for manufacturers to sell you more bikes. Change my mind 😅
Starting on anything below a 650cc and some 600cc is a waste of time and money. You’ll out grow a 300cc in a week. Everyone I know that rides started on a 600cc and up. And the ones that started with bikes below 1000cc, ended up getting a 1000cc plus within a year.

Its all about reliability and self control, if your bike is reliable you can ride it fast or slow, go far or near, and so on… if you can control the urge to squeeze the throttle and go max speed on first straight you can start on any bike you can physically do a corner at 30mph at least
From the time I commented this I have bought a 636 and have started learning on it with 0 experience. I’ve never been on any vehicle with 2 wheels except the bike I’m learning on and I’m doing just fine. It is completely possible to do you just have to be smart and take your time
I just bought a zx6r in March 21 2022, and on the first day I drove it on the freeway. I learned how to ride on a dirtbike 2 years ago and for only 2 weeks, on the day im writing this comment I've been driving the motorcycle for 3 days now. I drive a standard boosted civic so I knew the gears and how to work a clutch and gears. I had to do a ton of research on how to brake with front brake and rear because I never got comfortable on the dirtbike. 3 days later I already reached 120 on the freeway, and im regretting getting a 600cc bike because its super easy. And Im wishing I bought a 1000cc instead... Do your research, try out all the bikes. What I recommend is to test the throttle and see how easily you can control it. Make sure its not too sensitive but not too resistant for power, if power is what you want.

Normally I wouldn’t recommend a 600CC Supersport to anyone, but it must be said, that not all 600 supersports are the same. I started my riding career on a 2015 CBR500R. Great bike, totally easy to ride and handle, and enough power to ride in any condition and not be bored. Literally 5 months after lots of real world practice, I decided to buy a 2009 CBR600RR, which folks had always warned me not to get. Lo and behold, I realized, that the CBR600RR in particular is a stupid easy and forgiving bike to ride. There is very little power below about 8K and it’s all so linear, so an accidental throttle application won’t kill you. At about ~410lbs curb weight, the bike is easy to manage and cheap / reliable enough to fix if you drop it. Basically, you CAN start off on a 600CC supersport if you are mature, have self-control and put in effort to hone your skills. I have the same opinion about older Yamaha R6s, which didn’t make ANY power until like 10K RPM, which means you could just stay out the powerband and easily and keep yourself alive. Again, it’s not a recommendation, but I wish people didn’t scare me so much online into buying a “starter bike,” when I could’ve just as easily learned on a CBR600RR. However, If you have no self-control over your ego and actions, don’t ride a sportbike period.

I started on a 2015 cbr500r for my first street bike also! Well...I'm still on it. I've had it abput 3 weeks now, put over 1k on, &am already bored with it. It's a great bike, don't get me wrong, got it with 2106 miles on it. But I've already out grown it. Maybe if I started with a decent 650 I would still be satisfied with it. But now I'm looking at 600s, along with 650s now. I've just started seriously looking, &talked to the place where I bought the cbr from&one guy says go for the ninja 636, the other says either the ninja 650, or the z650. So I'm going to try them out&see if the 650 seems like I can get at least another year from, or if the 600 will be better for me.
I hope the fact that I would only trust myself to start on an r6 or cbr600 and not even touch a zx6r or gsxr600 is maturity enough lol. I’ve been looking at those bikes for a while and think I’m gonna go for the r6 but I want to just rent some 400 for a couple of rides before I actually buy a 600
I started on a 2011 Ninja Zx6r and I’ve had little trouble. I took the first month and worked on handling and basics in town and on open lots. If you take the time to know the bike and handle it I think 600s are a fair starting point. I still would not recommend, it but it is manageable. It really comes down to the individuals self control and respect of the machine.

Okay cool but I live in England so I have a 125. And then in a year I can only have a 300. And then two years after that I can pick however I want to die.
125's are good fun, all bikes are good i'd even be happy riding 80 cc. I rode a yz 85 large wheel few years ago it was powerful and tall for an 80cc bike

In Portugal we have a 50cc license at 14 yeras old, a 125cc license(with 11KW limit) at 16 years old, a 35kw license with no displacement limit at 18 years old and if we have either the 125cc or 35 KW license we are lucky enough to be able to take the full exam at the age of 21, if not we can only have the full license at the age of 24. I have a 125 cc license for almost 6 month, have already put more that 7K km on my bike(virago 125) and I can say that after driving the 535 version it feels that the 125 is too slow. In my opinion the 125 license should be replaced with the 35KW one.

Picking the 600 is a commitment. If you go into it knowing you're sacrificing comfort, utility, and storage space while also having to contend with a quirky powerband, you'll have a good time. If you buy a 600 just because it looks and sounds cool while not having a passion for it's quirk, you'll probably hate it.

I went the non-traditional route and got a 0cc bike as my first.
I ride a Zero SR and it's been a pretty accommodating first bike with no clutch or gear shifting, but it really makes you respect throttle control because if you're too heavy on the throttle in a corner all that torque can easily break that rear wheel loose.
Still though, it's a little tame. Should've started with a hayabusa.

@@TheFreshkidd619 I feel the same about riding vs car driving. I went with a cheap 125 to start with, learnt slow maneuvers and the basics and after 3 months felt ready to upgrade. Definitely worth it.

I'm an old fart but I have ridden an R1. Yeah, fun for a short time. I still have a couple thumpers (kick start only) a couple of cruisers (one a full dresser) and an R3. Believe it or not the thumpers are the ones I enjoy the most. That being said I believe that for some a 600cc bike as a starter is fine. For others it's a death sentence. People are different. Some are confident and aggressive others need time to work up and still some others should not get closer than a hundred feet to any kind of bike.

Yeah it depends on what bike, but personally, if I was a beginner and was worried about controlling the power of a 600 I would buy a 600 and get it ECU restricted, and when I get bored I would just get it derestricted and Its like getting a whole nee bike.

I'm a new rider with nearly 0 experience. I just bought a Kawasaki Vulcan S 650cc. It has 60 hp and is very beginner friendly by beeing forgiving and easy to handle. Although it weights about 450 pounds it doesnt feel heavy and is super easy to flat foot.

TBH this felt more like a sport bike vs other bikes debate. After all all 300cc Sport bikes are in reality more like naked bikes with fairings (except for that aggressive RC 390). And real sport bikes are just well, shitty for the street, beginner or not. Would have been more interested in a 300cc vs 600cc naked bike comparison for beginners. MT-07, SV-650, CB650R, Z650 or an R3, 390, Z400 etc.
Even as recently as five years ago, there wasnt much choice in the 600-700cc range other than sportbikes and SV650. A lot different now.

@@AT2Productions Thanks for the reminder! I shoulda known better as my first bike back after a 20 year moto hiatus was an 06 S2R800 and I was very much into the whole Monster scene. Damned fine bikes, and weren really the maintenance hogs many thought they were (at least mine wasnt!). But even the "small" Monsters tended to have higher price than the SV. Regarding maintenance again: a SV valve adjust was nearly as expensive as a desmodue, and if you didnt rev the snot out of it, you could push the interval out.
First bike was a Honda 250 and was fun to ride. Got back what I actually paid for it when I sold it. Your first bike is what it is “your first bike” don’t be concerned with anything else but to get something manageable that you won’t get hurt on that you can sharpen your skills to get something more fun and expensive.
I'm still riding my beginner bike, a 2002 CB600S. I took my lessons on a cbr500, but I don't like the 2-cylinder bikes. 600 4 cyl has such a sweet ride. I can recommend it to every beginner. :) great video

I barely even consider power into the equation when I say beginners should stay away from 600's. Any beginner can stick to low revs and half of the super sports have rider modes these days.
The touchy brakes and precise shifting are more likely to get them into trouble. Beginners grab brakes and shift sloppily, and doing either in the wrong situation on a 600 will spill you. Even with ABS and a slipper clutch.
IMO people who recommend 600's to "grow into" have taken for granted just how far along they are, and they have forgotten how big a learning curve on bikes are. Add the mentioned ergonomics and heavier weight into the mix with a beginner who is extra nervous because they started with an expensive bike, and it's just a bad recipe.
Starter bikes are nerve-wracking enough to start on for beginners and you'll probably be able to sell your starter bike from craigslist for the same $2000 you bought it for, so it's not like you're down anything for learning on a starter bike. And it's not like you won't have fun either; 250's/300's are super light and flickable and you get to rev the piss out of them, and you'll be more inclined to since you won't be out much if you hafta lay'erdown.
Yup, especially these days with advanced injection, bikes' power is smooth and controllable (Unlike my 1st Gen injection '98 750 SRAD which had the knack of trying to launch you out of a corner with just a hair more throttle, I also still hear the horror stories of older R1 riders from time to time)

It depends on the person. I started out on a 600cc and I was fine but before that even tho I had zero bike experience I regularly take my M3 to the track and I have a race license so I was kinda mechanically inclined to pick up riding quick. Anybody else going from zero to a 600 will probably drop it the first time they ride it lol

I think it all comes down to the person I started on a 2013 r6 and I’m doing just fine and loving it, my buddy started on a Kawasaki 650 and doesn’t want to go up at all, another friend started on a 300 and feels like he made the right choice. Know yourself and go with your gut. I knew I’d be fine and I was respect the bike and drive safe.
I began teaching my wife to ride about a year an a half ago. I started her out on a Suzuki 300, she progressed quickly, she wanted to move up to a 600 four months after she started riding. I held her off on that making sure she had enough experience an seat time before moving up to a 600. A month ago I was finally comfortable with her stepping up and we got her a Gsx'er 600, at first it was a little much for her. So we selected a lower power setting until she got used to the weight and response of the bike. We gradually increase the power settings until now she on full power mode, she's doing great. People want to move to fast stepping up to a 600 or liter bike before they have the skills necessary to control the power. I wish I could've learned to ride like that, but I had to be Billy Badass and started on a Ninja 900 back in the 80s. The worst bike in the world to learn on, had alot of bumps, bruises and scrapes but I learned the ride.

@@cjfruge9294 Lotta fun man. I actually learned to ride 2 years before on a Ninja 300 an SV650 then finally was able to get my own. During the riding sessions on those bikes I'm sure it added up to less than 24 hours. The R6 riding position is very aggressive compared to other bikes an pushes a lot of engine heat. The GSXR is more Comfortable.

I started to learn 4 months back on a 2018 Ducati supersport , now I moved over to 2018 Aprilia 1100 v4 tuono. People advised against it but it didn’t seem to matter. As long as you know your limits and value your life you should be okay. I’m still a beginner rider but i respect my machine and value my life even more.

Just bought a 2005 busa, never owned a motorcycle before, never have even driven a motorcycle before and pushed it to 160 k/m/h just yesterday on a 12 mile straightaway. Still here, but honestly, probably not for long.
I always go on vacation with my dad on the Yamaha Thunderrace 1000. We drive a whole week Everyday day. We only drive trough mountain passes. Now that's hard even though im on the back. Your position on the bike matters.
The first bike I rode was a zx6r and I'm still alive. I grew up riding dirt bikes and quads so I thought I knew what I was doing but street bikes are vastly different. If you just stay at low rpms you will be fine since the most power is made above 8k rpms. Ride smart and safe and you can learn on a 600.
It's not even controversial; You SHOULD start on a 250, but COULD start on a 600.
I had a blast on my Ninja 250 and enjoyed every minute on it. I'm absolutely convinced I wouldn't have enjoyed my current ZX6R as a starter bike.

Street triple 675 was a fantastic beginner bike and you wont get bored with it for years. I bought mine in July 2015 and still own it.
You fail to mention the self control it takes to ride a 600 slow, however coming from a 2 time daytona slayer its not surprising.
If you can't ride slow in a 600cc in the streets, you should never ride one, no matter if you are a new rider or experienced, you have to ride slow in the streets on both cases
Finally someone that thinks the same way than me , if a 600c.c bike was driven until 10k rpm only produces around 80hp, its enought to enjoy and have fun and even the engine is getting less stress than a 300/400c.c. The breaks and suspensions are exponencial better and that provides a safer drive. The drive is less demanding if you drive until 9/10krpm of course.
Good video, I agree that displacement is not the be-all-end-all. I have a 2019 Kawasaki Z650 ABS as my first bike and do not regret it one bit.

Carl Christopher Calo 650 is different than the 636 or zx6r it’s a twin and is MUCH less “jumpy” if you get a 650 you won’t have any issues it’s like a 300 with more torque
I just got my first bike. It's a 2004 Suzuki S40 Boulevard with a 650 single. It's got enough power to get you on the highway and then some for passing. It's not murderously fast and it definitely won't throw you off the saddle. All for 2000 bucks, I do recommend.

JanggoMoto 1911 Living in the PI until I was 12, I bet it would be fun for me to go back there and ride my motard. Those tight, bumpy(lubak-lubak) roads would be ideal for my supermoto to ride on.
@E2Moto, you would be surprised that you would be needing something more powerful. City & country roads have improved a whole lot. But definitely, a supermoto still has got lots of suspension travel to gobble all those pesky potholes & breaks on the road. Ride safe.

Long time. 100kph would be fairly average. You can get up to 160-200kph on some parts but mostly, there are just too many obstacles on the road and each can just touch you a bit and you go flying off the road at that speeds.
JanggoMoto 1911 My motard will be perfectly fine with that highway speed. I ride my DRZ at 80 MPH(128 KPH) in the freeways here in California, and my bike can go faster, but I prefer not to stress the engine too much.

I always thought a beginner bike would be a 125, a 250, a 300cc..my brother's first was a Honda CBR 600F and I told him he was crazy.
I think the power curve of the R6 is why it's a perfect bike to learn on. Under 12k rpm it's very tame and manageable. As you gain some confidence and skill, you can simply start pushing the revs and you already have a very quick and sporty bike. Most importantly clutch timing and shifting mistakes wont throw you off the bike when you're a total noob. I thought it was great to learn on. And eventually the lack of torque makes it feel slow and when that happens there are plenty of litre machines to buy:)

I went for a Yamaha XJ6N, power at around 80HP not overwhelming. All in all a good beginner bike, in my opinion ofc.

First bike: 50cc, top speed 70km/h, had an absolute blast for a year. Second bike 88cc, 20hp and top speed of 120km/h, was and still is really fun to use, had it now for 3 years. Third bike 125cc, 30hp. Feels like I won't need a new bike for the next 2 years.

I started on an Yamaha MT-07 (689cc) as my first bike 3 years ago and even though i got the typical "you're crazy" comments from some people, i really had no trouble at all.
Not all 600+cc bikes are made to race like Yammie says in the video, I think he was really taking about the SuperBikes category only (which are the ones that get 110+ horsepower too, mine gets only to 74).

As a 69 yr old returning rider i strongly considered a 250/300 mainly commuting speed limits here mainly 60/80 km/h but i ended up with a 2012 cbf600s in a pristine condition. at a price much cheeper than the smaller bikes, i though 76 hp is enough and an overkill, but busa man put my mind in a different perspective, always good to listen to the" clever" people out there.

Great breakdown, I’ve been riding R1s on the track for years with a 27 inch inseam (do the math) and love the power. Just bought a 2023 ZX 6 and do appreciate the ergonomic difference. The only issue now is getting “liter biked” out of corners by my buddies.
Work harder on the brakes and through the corners, then watch them pull away in the straight.
beginners get a used bike that not very expensive so u dont get bummed out when u drop it or lay it down in a corner.
engine 250-650cc (1 or 2 cylinders) never mind what make and model , ride the crap out of it in every gear and get something better when u are more experienced as a rider cheers

My first bike was a Honda CG125 then when I passed my test for my full license I went for a classic Suzuki RG500. Two-stroke madness! I don't think 300cc and 600cc should be the only options for "First bikes" hell the bikes I got after my RG500 was the CBR954RR and the Hornet 900. It all should depend on your ability as a rider and how sensible you are. Some of my friends think I was stupid to skip the middle weight bikes altogether but I've never dropped them. My CG125 has been dropped more times than I can count however. And my friends have either written off their 600s or killed themselves on them because... Well let's be honest they were over confident and stupid.
For everyone who wants to know. A 600 isnt too big to start out on. Its not much difference then a 300 until you crack the throttle open. The biggest danger of the 600 is that you can get over your head quick with a whole lot of speed before you are ready. Its really easy to hit 100+ mph on a 600 where the smaller bikes will top out a little after that. The issue is that some people will act stupid and get themselves hurt or killed when given that kind of power.
Starting out on a smaller bike may give some advantages to an absolute newb, a tamer motor with low end torque is better for learning the clutch and learning to ride in traffic. The weight is a little lower, but honestly you should be taking it easy for a little while until you figure everything out anyways. Newbs often mess up by using their front brake when they should be using the back (grass, gravel, turning lowspeed stops) newbs often get to tense and force their bikes to wreck because the rider is nervous. (You gotta loosen up that grip yo) Let the bike do what it wants. It wants to stand up and go straight. A 600cc is a beast of a machine no doubt, but it is possible to cruise around on them.
Also as yammi says, you are gonna drop your first bike alot, ecspecially if you are into stunting and drifting through yards and stuff, and just having fun. I learned on dirtbikes, which are awesome because you can drop them without messing them up usually. If its your first bike, get a cheap one that is already seen its share of drops.
The ninja 400, cbr 500, are both good bikes. They are both plenty fast, fun, and excellent beginner bikes. My friend got a ninja 400 to learn on and its excellent, and I got a cbr500 for running around town on, but I have other bikes too. I like both of them, and they are excellent. Nowhere near as fast as a gsxr1000 but plenty fast to outrun 460hp cop cars or anybody else, if you know how to ride.
Take your time and get into bikes at a good pace. You don't have to jump straight into a 600rr at first as that is a bit much for a beginner, but you certainly can if you value your life and you take it easy. If you have some experience riding though, maybe a year or so, a 600 is an excellent first street bike.
The biggest problem with the bigger bikes for beginners is that most people who start out riding them never get good at riding in the same way someone who starts out on a 250 dirtbike, or ninja 250r will. I see people all the time on 600s and 1000s who cant even hang with a 400 because they dont know how to use the power correctly, and hold their curves smooth. Many people have been riding for years and still suck, because they started out on a 100+ hp bike. Its hard to improve when you are always scared, and you keep having close calls, almost running off the road, or running into the back of someone.
The best flow is dirtbike -> ninja 400-cbr600 -> zx 636-cbr1000 - > the other 1000 rrs.

People are speaking on 600’s as if they are only track bikes. I get it. 600’s are made for riders to move at high speeds, however that’s like people making a UA-cam Channel, telling you or suggesting cars like HellCats and Corvettes are not good for a regular commute only racing. … So I shouldn’t buy a Vetter unless I’m taking it to the track. JMO

Seating position was the most important decision for me when I bought my CBR650F. She's my first, and I'm still in love with her. Power was secondary to comfort, because my thought was if I'm not comfortable, then I'm not going to learn to ride properly. Besides, a few well spent dollars, an exhaust, and power commander later, and I'm not racing R6's, but they aren't getting away that fast either.
Yam-man, your videos are always interesting and entertaining, but this one is so instructional as well! Good things to think about for my next bike and what I want to use it for. You go way beyond simple specs or "should I get the one with 140 or 150 tires on the rear?" type of useless questions. Keep on doin' what you do.

I have a 2015 aprilia rsv4 rr as my first bike, and ive been riding around 2 years and no issues, respect the bike and you will be fine getting a 1000 as a first bike. with that said i have 8 lvl traction control, 3 driving modes, abs, wheelie control and launch control so its a easy bike :)

it looks like you've never heard of GSR 600, CB 600, FZ6.. 4 cyl, 600cc, but they're all really comfortable and easy to ride
Yea i just bought a 2021 Honda CBR 650r im nervous to ride it but watching videos show me that if you drive calm itll stay calm.
In Ireland there are different categories of bike licences. AM, A1, A2 and A. The first 3 are generally for young guys because these categories are for mopeds (AM) and low cc bikes or restricted bikes. If you are 24 years of age or older you can apply directly for the A licence which allows you to ride any bike you want but here is the thing. You have to pass your test on a bike of at least 600cc.
I have a 2006 Suzuki katana 600, which I think is a perfect road bike. It has 80 horsepower, so it's not crazy, and it's comfortable enough to ride for long distances, plus decently sporty.

in this range, just pick whatever you feel physically comfortable on :) It will take a lot longer to grow out of a 500cc (Honda cb/cbr 500?), and the power is very manageable. Most instructors use 500 or 650 cc bikes to teach new riders and it's no problem at all :) Just remember that a bad rider can kill themselves on any bike if you don't pay attention to your surroundings.

Depends on what you're looking for a first bike. You want a bike that will teach you best, get a 250, but if you want to be a bit more utilitarian by getting a beginner bike that will take a while to outgrow and can take you in freeways, get a 500 preferably ones with 2-cylinders.

My first bike and the bike I still ride to this day is a 07' Honda CBR 1000RR... 😐 Been riding it for about 3 years now.
bottom line is you can start on a 600, but the best and fastest riders started on something small.
unless you start on a Gixxer 600. Rider modes allow you to bring the power down 50%-65%. it's got 125 HP, so with modes you can choose to only have 60 or 65 HP, a little less than your average 650 which are often considered some of the best beginner bikes

After jumping to a 1000 from a 300 as my second bike i am now fully convinced that this whole "start on a 300/600" thing is full of sh*t. Its a ploy for manufacturers to sell you more bikes. Change my mind 😅
Starting on anything below a 650cc and some 600cc is a waste of time and money.
You’ll out grow a 300cc in a week. Everyone I know that rides started on a 600cc and up. And the ones that started with bikes below 1000cc, ended up getting a 1000cc plus within a year.

Its all about reliability and self control, if your bike is reliable you can ride it fast or slow, go far or near, and so on… if you can control the urge to squeeze the throttle and go max speed on first straight you can start on any bike you can physically do a corner at 30mph at least

From the time I commented this I have bought a 636 and have started learning on it with 0 experience. I’ve never been on any vehicle with 2 wheels except the bike I’m learning on and I’m doing just fine. It is completely possible to do you just have to be smart and take your time

I just bought a zx6r in March 21 2022, and on the first day I drove it on the freeway. I learned how to ride on a dirtbike 2 years ago and for only 2 weeks, on the day im writing this comment I've been driving the motorcycle for 3 days now. I drive a standard boosted civic so I knew the gears and how to work a clutch and gears. I had to do a ton of research on how to brake with front brake and rear because I never got comfortable on the dirtbike. 3 days later I already reached 120 on the freeway, and im regretting getting a 600cc bike because its super easy. And Im wishing I bought a 1000cc instead...
Do your research, try out all the bikes. What I recommend is to test the throttle and see how easily you can control it. Make sure its not too sensitive but not too resistant for power, if power is what you want.
