  • Today is Friday, December 31, 2021... and it's NAVI day! I'll walk you around the bike and do a cold startup on this little 110cc carbureted engine. Skip to the end of this description for clickable time indexes.

    The new 2022 Honda NAVI is a neat little scooter that thinks it's a motorcycle. The price point is very low, and it's aimed toward beginner riders and as simple transportation. However, to meet the low price point of $1807 MSRP, Honda obviously had to cut some corners on this budget machine. The carbureted engine is a significant departure from all the modern fuel-injected motorcycles and scooters, creating a unique learning curve for new riders. You must remember to turn the fuel petcock on/off when you ride the machine, and you'll also need to be prepared to switch it over to reserve when the fuel is low, and begins to sputter... hopefully not while traveling at higher speeds or in heavy traffic.
    The cold start routine is typical for most carbureted bikes. You need to use the choke lever on the left handlebar to start the engine when it's cold and let it run for about 20-30 seconds before closing the choke lever. Warm restarts shouldn't require choke unless the outside temperatures are very cold.
    Unfortunately, my NAVI has an idle problem that causes it to sputter and stall while cold. It also stumbles when riding at full operating temperature at low throttle positions. I suspect that the fuel mixture is too rich because it has a strong fuel smell, like it's running on choke all the time. I'll dig into the carburetor to adjust the idle and the air/fuel mixture settings sometime soon.
    The next oddity compared to more modern machines is the instrument cluster and the lighting. Nothing happens when you turn on the ignition key... no lights, no headlight, no tail lamp... nothing at all. The headlight and tail light are powered only by the engine's generator/stator, so they don't illuminate when the engine isn't running. The problem I've observed is that at low engine RPM (idle), the lights are VERY dim and flicker with the engine RPM. That needs to be resolved ASAP because a weak tail light in traffic could cause you to have a very bad day!
    I will be upgrading my NAVI with LED bulbs throughout, and I will probably reroute the headlight and tail lamp circuit to be powered directly by the battery (switched with the ignition, of course). Aside from those immediate concerns, the other upgrades will be creature comforts and cargo/luggage options for my riding chores. Here is my short list of upcoming mods for the NAVI:
    - LED bulbs for turn signals (also needs electronic flasher relay)
    - LED bulb for tail light (probably one with an integrated flasher circuit)
    - LED bulbs for gauge cluster
    - driving lights on fork legs (already have a spare set of Denali DM's)
    - dump the chugly OEM exhaust for something much slimmer
    - GoldPlug magnetic drain bolt (probably MP-01, need to check cross-references or just pull it out to verify)
    - rear rack/carrier (Honda first, maybe upgrade to SHAD later if/when it's available)
    - windscreen (Honda first, maybe upgrade to MadStad or National Cycle Deflector)
    - CBS delete (change front and rear brake cam arms for single cable actuation)
    - rear brake left hand lever conversion from ADV150 scooter (lever has integrated parking lock)
    Time indexes:
    0:00 Brief walkaround of the NAVI
    2:04 Cold start procedure and NAVI quirks
    4:22 Low idle and stalling issues, dim flickering lights
    6:26 Air/fuel mixture is too rich
    7:29 Turn signal lamps are incandescent with mechanical flasher
    8:24 Warm kickstart process and side stand lockout
    10:09 Checking and adjusting the carburetor idle screw
    14:55 Carburetor adjustments for different elevations?
    17:08 View inside the storage box, should be easy to remove
    19:50 Locking fuel door, under seat storage
    22:34 Helmet hooks on the rear grab rail

    Open the throttle a tiny bit when cold kick starting. It will start immediately. Run 300 miles before adjusting air/fuel mixture. It is meant to run rich initially to wear in the engine.

      If you do want to fiddle with it (which is not recommended) the screw on the right with the spring on is idle rpm. The one on the left is idle mixture. Neither will change your open throttle mixture setting. Honda engineers know their American customers very well. They know you guys will go wide open throttle on your first ride. The older technology piston/cylinder metallurgy requires a wear in period during which the engines compression will improve as it wears in achieving full combustion. The engine randomly quitting while idling is proof that full compression is not being achieved. Once it has worn in, it will
      Idle smoothly at very low rpm. Also, as compression improves, the smell of unburnt gas will go away. Oh and do let it spin the rear wheel when idling to reduce wear on the CVT belt

    You only have 10 miles on it! Don’t adjust anything until it’s broken in!
    Trying to outsmart highly paid and highly qualified engineers who work for the best Japanese engine manufacturer is not well thought out decision!
    The engine is running rich to aid in the break-in process. Running it rich will help keep cylinder temperatures down while the piston, rings, and cylinder seat together. If the mixture is to lean you could create to much heat and mar the cylinder etc.
    I understand you want to make sure everything is running perfectly on your brand new bike. But don’t over think it.
    You can make a temporary idle adjustment but after the engine loosens up it will idle to high. After it is broken in it should free up a little more power too…

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  2 роки тому +2

      Agreed! I'll certainly wait to adjust the A/F mixture until after it's broken-in and after I have a shop manual to reference for the various procedures. I've been riding and racing for over 45 years, so I've tuned plenty of carburetors in my time.
      Unfortunately, I had no choice with the NAVI's idle adjustment because it was constantly sputtering and dying like this every time I stopped at stop signs or made U-turns in the street. That had to be adjusted ASAP! 👍 --QM

    I would release the manual hand brake too.
    If the wheel is spinning that means the Variator/clutch are slightly engaging (not aproblem) and by you engaging the brake it’s causing resistance which will affect the idle.
    And definitely don’t keep blipping the throttle with the handbrake on.

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  2 роки тому

      The rear wheel won't be spinning if you're stopped in traffic or sitting at an intersection. The idle issue that I'm illustrating is happening while the bike is stationary, and it has died 8-10 times under those conditions while I've been out on the public streets.
      Bumping the idle up ~400 RPM (near 2100 now, factory is 1700 +/- 100 RPM) seems to have minimized the stumbling/stalling issues, but it's still there in the background... stumbles and nearly stalls, but it continues running. That usually indicates an A/F imbalance, weak spark or CDI, or leaky carburetor fittings. The exhaust smell is very rich, so the A/F ratio is the likely cause.
      Forcing a high idle to prevent the stumbling isn't a long-term solution because that partially engages the centrifugal clutch, which results in premature clutch & belt wear. I will suffer with it for ~300 miles during the initial engine break-in period, and then I'll drill out the brass block-out plate that's covering the A/F mixture screw. I'll reset the carb to the factory settings and then adjust the idle per the service manual. --QM

    • @billshuni
      @billshuni 2 роки тому +1

      @@QuasiMotard Yep all wise words and agree with your principles……but applying the handbrake on the centre stand is pointless.
      It will firstly be causing drag which will help to stall the engine as per your video, cold start on the driveway.
      Then secondly blipping the throttle repeatedly like that with 100% resistance is pointless. Just release the handbrake. Cold starts with the above actions is not the same as hot idle in traffic.
      I’m not saying your principals are wrong, it just makes me cringe seeing the handbrake applied on the centre stand with engine running plus the blipping……..you should stop that practice as it’s not helping or proving anything.
      I see a comment about altitudes? If it is 6300’ then your AF mixture will definitely be compromised as am sure you are aware. I’d simply head out for the day, get the mileage done and put it in for its first service, tell the dealership the issues and they will tune it for you at that service job done, with hopefully nothing else needed.

    • @QuasiMotard
      @QuasiMotard  2 роки тому +3

      @@billshuni Doing these procedures on video to illustrate principles/problems is always a bit tricky, and it takes a lot more time than just DOING it. Everyone has their own opinions and procedures that they've established over time, and that confirmation bias affects their perception of the situation. However, this starting procedure is BY THE BOOK from Honda's owner/operator manual:
      P.28: "2. Lock the rear brake (-->P.25).",
      P.30: "2. Warm up the engine by opening and closing the throttle slightly.",
      P.30: "3. Continue warming up the engine until it will idle smoothly with the choke lever pushed forward all the way to fully off."
      I'm sure that the A/F mixture is misadjusted on this carburetor because of the smell. It's VERY rich and that will cause these types of issues at idle and while transitioning from idle to main jet at part throttle. I've seen this dozens of times... when raising the idle stop slightly and the idle doesn't improve, the A/F is too rich (too lean tends to cause RPM surging). The reason for the idle not improving is that the main jet needle raises slightly with the carburetor venturi slide, which introduces MORE fuel into the mixture and that exacerbates the problem. Leaning-out the mixture is the fix, but that needs to be balanced without the PAIR (emmissions valve) connected, which can interfere with a proper baseline and idle setting.
      My plan is to suffer through the stutters until the ~300-mile break-in has been completed, and then I'll take it back to the dealer for adjustment (so they can note it on the warranty card for Honda's statistics). Otherwise, I'll just drill out the block-out plate covering the A/F screw and then reset the mixture per the procedures listed in the service manual. If you're interested in the gritty details, then here are a couple of links to the manuals referenced here:

      @@QuasiMotard cool response 👍 and hear what you are saying.
      I’ve tuned many Vespa’s over the years so understand the balancing act needed between jets, mixture, filter etc.
      I just see the handbrake as a side stand anti roll device, and if Vespa had them back when, I wouldn’t have applied in that instance……..but can also see the group safety of it not flying off in untrained hands should the centre stand rock forwards.
      Good luck with it and happy new year.

      @QuasiMotard  2 роки тому +2

      Yep, that's exactly what I was thinking, too. It would have been great if they borrowed the EFI from the Zoomer-X 110 in Mexico (or just used that engine instead). I think Honda might have a few warehouses full of these from other markets where they didn't sell very well, and they decided to gamble on the USA market again.
      Historically, scooters have been very poor sellers in the USA market, but the miniMOTO's have been a phenomenal sucess. The Grom was the catalyst that started the small-bore resurgence in public interest in small bikes again. Honda has been adding more miniMOTO's to their line up every year, so maybe the tides are turning for small bikes and scooters. I'd love to see more of Honda's small bikes here... they just need to truck them north from Mexico like they did with the NAVI! Cheers! 😉👍

    Crazy cheap price and seems super fun to ride around. I own a trail 125 and love it. I would get one of these for friends to ride but honestly no fuel injection kills it for me.
    Using California ethanol crap gas makes a carb too hard to live with. That first time you forget to put fuel stabilizer in it you will pay. To make matters worse the carb is not that easy to get to for removing clogs.
    I think almost everyone would have paid $200 more to get EFI. Also it seems to have pretty terrible emissions out of the box. Perhaps because of the chip shortage they had to just slap on a carb?
    If they refresh it with efi I’ll put down a deposit. Enjoy the videos, thanks.

    • @QuasiMotard

      Agreed! I really wish that Honda would have gambled on the extra $200-300 cost and upgraded these to fuel-injection. I have several carbureted bikes, and I'm always annoyed when I need to pull the carbs to clean out idle jets that are gunked up with ethanol boogers.
      I'm surprised that Honda would import this bike from Mexico, but NOT import the Zoomer-X 110 scooter that's already made and sold in Mexico. The Zoomer is fuel-injected and I think that it would sell a lot more units than the current Ruckus. 😉👍

I'll just need to send my original exhaust to them first, which means I can't ride the NAVI until I get it back. Hmm... decisions, decisions. 😉

      It seems to be hit or miss with the carburetor issues on the Navi. Some owners don't have any problems (or very minor ones), while others have experienced these terrible idle problems.
      The unfortunate truth is that most motorcycle shops and service centers don't know how to diagnose and tune carburetors anymore... it's becoming a lost art because nearly all bikes are fuel-injected now.
      The best bet for carb tuning (aside from learning the craft yourself) is to find a shop that still works on dirt bikes and older street bikes. Their technicians should still be intimately familiar with carburetors, and they probably have a bunch of spare jets, needles, and clips in their parts inventory for tuning. Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

      @@civic2323 Will do! I'm planning to contact Coffman's Exhaust tomorrow morning (Monday) to see if they want to work on a prototype. I'll sacrifice my NAVI's OEM exhaust for the cause. Unfortunately, I won't be able to ride my bike until I receive the new exhaust because Coffman's will need mine for prototyping (unless they already have a NAVI owner nearby that's willing to drop off their bke for a few days).
      Tuning the carburetor is highly recommended after changing the pipe, particularly with scooter exhausts that contain the catalyst. I'm not sure if the NAVI's exhaust has a cat or not, but I'll find out soon. If the airflow isn't drastically altered (e.g,. retaining the cat and/or not adding a high-flow intake), then minor adjustments to the air/fuel mixture screws and the main jet needle position will usually bring things into balance. If that doesn't work, then swapping out the idle jet and main jet isn't difficult to do.
      The tricky part about re-jetting is finding the right balance on a new combination of parts. The best way is to use a wideband O2 sensor and an EGT (exhaust gas temp) meter on a dyno. Taking good baselines of the original configuration is also a good idea so you can glean info about the "normal" operating parameters of the engine (e.g., CHT, EGT, O2/lambda measurements, etc). The goal is to make as much power as possible without raising the EGT outside of safe operating limits... that causes scorched pistons, burned valves, etc. LEAN = HOT = BAD DAY.
      I'll keep everyone updated on that project as it unfolds. If it works out, I'm sure that Coffman's will be able to sell a BOATLOAD of them to NAVI owners... this OEM unit is seriously chugly. The final product should include a "how-to" on the exhaust install, re-jetting/tuning the carburetor, and settings for different upgrade configurations (e.g., exhaust-only, intake-and-exhaust, etc). Cheers! 😉👍 --QM

    In my minds this just sounds like a redesigned 4 stroke Honda spree

    Yeah, increase the idle and you'll be fine.

    How the heck did you get a Navi already?

      I know, right! I wasn't expecting it to land until late January or early February. I'm probably not even the first in Texas this time. Another channel viewer sent me a message on Instagram yesterday saying that he also has a green NAVI and he's right here in Katy, TX with me! Small world!
      I'll try to coordinate a meet-up ride with him next weekend to compare notes and to make a video. Who knows... maybe this will be the start of the west Houston/Katy NAVI Squad?! 😉👍 --QM
