- Earthbound is such a unique game. There is nothing quite like it! From Thomas Jefferson the slot machine substitute to fighting a melting clock, Earthbound is more than a simple RPG, it's an experience.
So enjoy a look into how this crazy fun game came about!

I wonder why Ness's peace sign isn't one of his Smash Bros taunts.
I never even thought of that, that would be so good to have in the game....
the people behind Project M managed to get it in there
***** Yea I found that out a bit ago from watching GRSmash vids, I thought it was super duper cool! All the more confusing that it's not in any other smash game
*****
yeah i agree, they should have been the main pose instead of the bowing
I think it is because the V sign is seen as a rude gesture in some countries.. TOugh I could be wrong..
The Magic Butterfly information is used in game. The Magic Butterflies as spawned using the same routine as enemies, and the monster data for them is used to assign their out-of-battle graphics and movement pattern. The rest of the data is there simply because all blocks of enemy data have to be the same size (94 bytes). So, while you never get in a fight with them, they do need battle data to function.
"With Yooka Laylee coming out, we truly live in a great time for games. with games like mighty no 9-"
Oh....honey......
I was a backer, and I'll admit it wasn't the most mind blowing thing ever, but I was just happy as hell to have a mega man-like
@@darthdementedim so sorry
Waaaaait, you BOUGHT a physical copy of Earthbound? How expensive was it?
***** $100, but I sold my Villager amiibo to pay for it. :D
***** A worthless piece of plastic for one of the best games ever?, You screwed that guy.
PepsiWithCoke Actually, I was offered $90 for it on Craigslist and bought Earthbound from the local game store with the money. Everyone was happy! :)
***** Ah, nice.
***** why didn't you just buy it off the eshop for less than ten bucks? Then you wouldn't have to sell the villager amiibo. Just wondering.
RIP Iwata.... Earthbound wouldn't have been what it was, if not for you :(
iwata is not likely needed for a new mother game. the real problem was because the daughter of shigesato itoi has been grown up and not motivated to shigesato itoi make ideas of her drawings bruh
The ''creepy cave song'' is actually a remastered version of the cave theme in the original Mother, it's not the first remastered version either, for example, they remastered the hippie battle from the original Mother as well and other things as well.
Also, it's literally the 3rd track you will hear in the first 5 minutes of gameplay.
Title track
Ness' house
Ness' basement (track in question)
@@borrisg4972In Mother 1 You Mean ?
Interesting trivia but the static before the title is actually literally Giygas. I corrupted the opening to where it misaligned some of the static and it fixed a little and it was literally giygas
actually literally -_-
I like abusing the english language, don't mind me
In fact, when you beat Giygas, the picture of him on the screen becomes static, which is practically identical to the intro static. It's like the game went full circle!
I never thought about it that way. Awesome to know.
That must've scared the living fuck out of you.
I believe that the magic butterfly was originally meant to work how the Walking Bushie is in Mother 3, as in that game the Bushie is a friendly enemy who heals and acts affectionately toward you.
Either that, or it was like the Heart Plants and Hurt Plants in Paper Mario, where there's a friendly version and a hostile version and no way to tell them apart without examining them.
GastonRabbit Yea.
Actually, I think it's just that Magic Butterflies have to have spawn data similar to that of enemies, considering they need to be assigned to spawn plates. But I don't know much about coding and game development, soooo...
Alternatively, I think it would have been an interesting concept to have a Magic Butterfly either be a friend that replenishes your PP, or a foe that attacks you. But that's such a jerk concept that I'd understand any reasoning for removing a concept like that. Imagine being in a situation where you have NO PP left and you NEED to heal, so you see a thing that can give you PP. You go to use it...and it attacks you, causing you to lose all your progress. Ouch.
for a moment I thought my terrible internet was acting up when I saw that loading circle
J GAMER X You're not the only one who fell for it.
Cairil Yakup I wouldn't of if my interent wasn't terrible my dad wont even admit it he keeps on denying it even though when I show him that my 3ds is getting 1 bar of signal strength... *RIGHT NEXT TO THE ACCESS POINT!!!*
J GAMER X same here
J GAMER X Yeah? Well, last night I couldn't get any connection to the internet on my phone, only to realise the next day my mom had turned it off before I fell asleep.

Spoke too soon, buddy.
So is it called "Earthbound" because it specifically takes place on one planet, as in "bound to earth?"
yes
Matthew Kunkle Just be aware that in Japanese it is called Mother 2.
Hairo Aguilera Actually the name Mother was based on a song or a band or something
+PKMN 5D's "Mother" by The Beatles.
Kiernan Howell-MacKinley Ah
Thank you for doing this on my favorite RPG ever
Bruh I see u everywhere
Haedox youre not everywhere. youre in my house
Faruq Ajidagba You might forever regret that statement... I once made a comment similar to that one and it is used frequently in his videos...
Earthbound is awesome, but have you played Mother 3? It's even better than earthbound!

*DEUUEAUGH!!!*
15:58 Just in case someone hasn't pointed this out yet, the unused cave theme is a remix of the cave theme from Mother 1. They probably used the same track to retain continuity, but changed it later because it was just too creepy. It always was.

My memory might be foggy, but I remember seeing the question mark sprite. I think it may have been in the create a character screen when you choose your favourite food?
Martin Y Actually, the food sprite in the naming screen is a question mark on top of a plate.
your memory may be foggy, but Beta 64 has the froggy intelligence
+BTMI mexiclamationpoint Froggy, are you I there?
Your right I think I remember it too
enemies in magicant?
19:22 ah yes, the extremely rare scenario where Ness and his friends are chased by a one-hit-kill psychopath
I really like how the developers worked around the technological limits when making the map. A lot of areas were sized based on the map elements around them. The dinosaur area being shrunk down was innovation sparked from limitation.
18:41 That mystery sound effect that plays when something creepy happens is the only instance of earthbound beginnings' eight melodies in earthbound
"Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars" Gotta hit that one up next man, a classic.
That background designer for the battle sequences needs more recognition 👏👏👏👏
The photographer does take a picture of the party in the Lost Underground. I remember that sprite to Ness doing the 'V' sign quite vividly.
i know this is like 7 years later, but no.
in fact, if small ness does do the peace sign, he just reverts to his normal sprite.
@@superdean9966 hello fellow shesez watcher!
@darthdemented huh?
R.I.P. Mr. Iwata. :(
The people who disliked this are from moonside.
Do you like this game? No. :P
ShougaTouki No, I hate this game so much. That's why I gave it a 10/10 rating.
ShougaTouki I don't like it either!
Just another UA-cam channel - That's exactly what someone from moonside would say. I'm not even joking. Edisnoom
Jimmy ButtWhiff Never played it. I was just being sarcastic.
TFW he didn't notice the unused Final Cave music is a remix of Mother 1's dungeon areas... ;_;
That Earthbound Beginnings hype tho
Did anyone else find the sounds on the earthbound title TERRIFYING? Just me?
I had to skip it in the video.
do you mean the EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEIIIIIHHHHHhhhhhh!
Willom yep
Oh yeah very scary every time always skipped that stuff
I always thought gigygas was atrying to brainwash me
The "Creepy Cave Theme" is actually a remix of a song from Mother 1 that was used most notably in the Catacombs of Magicant (In the Well)
In my opinion it would've worked well for stonehenge base though.
Madness Unleashed
I thought it sounded familiar
i heard the creepy cave song when i go to the zoo in the first place
ehh
the creepy cave theme is in twoson sewers
It's still TERRIFYING though
I was rummaging through basement storage and found a copy of Earthbound that my mother used to play!
wow, thats rare.
9:00 actually, if you talk behind him. He makes that position.
The sprite is actually used but is impossible to see it in normal gameplay.
Wow, kind of cool that you included the musical differences. I'm glad I looked into and recorded those, but you didn't talk at all about differences with the Magicant music which sounds really similar to the final version but at the same time really different. Also, the differences with the Deep Darkness music may have been before the instruments for that track were finalized as you can hear that the drumming is replaced with the cymbal sound which would've been a simple number change. The higher pitched melody may have been a similar modification to the instrument settings, but that's more debatable.
Yooka Laylee.. A Hat in Time… Might No. 9.. we’re getting old guys

MikeyTaylorGaming oh hey dude! I like your vids!
The creepy cave music is just a remix of the basement/cave music from Mother1
16:57 I downloaded that unused song. It's pretty cool and creepy. I always thought it was a remix of the cave theme from Mother 1.
2:03 rest in peace, soturu iwata
Rip Iwata
I'm pretty sure the unused cave song is a remake of a track from Mother 1.

LS Mark hey, mark!
Holy shit Brian, it's LS Mark
8:54 This sprite is used, but you have to talk to him from behind, and since that's only possible by clipping through the wall behind him, it might as well be considered unused
I miss this game so much, it was one of the BEST games i have ever played.
In the Mother 2 beta interview, There was a thing you missed that is not actually in the final game or it's files, it's another unused song meant to be played in some desert area that was never used!
(It plays during the scene in which the interview shows the yellow digging truck moving)
That “Creepy Cave Theme” has a sample of the underground theme from mother 1 or earthbound beginnings

Ay Kris, got some moon at your place? I'd really want some right now!

Oh no
You know, it's ok to dislike a popular game or a certain genre, even if it's an unpopular opinion, it still counts.
The reason for the dead everdread sprite, in the Japanese version of the game everdread dies instead of just getting up and walking away like he does in the american version.
Nameless also the creepy cave theme is also a remix of one of the themes that play in mother 1 for the NES.
Everdred is now Everdead *gets shot*
I did not shoot you... I love that pun!
@@HylianBelmont This reminds me of naked Samus in Super Metroid for the Super Famicom. I have a Super Famicom, I have a Japanese copy of Super Metroid and I've died in the Japanese language mode. Samus is never naked in her death animation no matter what I tried (and I was rather... motivated to find that sprite). I don't understand why people think these myths are true in *the age of information.*
@@hostiusasinhostilityhostil7853 actually this myth stems from an interview with Yoshio Sakamoto where he claims that a ROM file still exists somewhere that has the original death sequence for Samus in Super Metroid where she was naked all along (that's the reason why the sprite is covered by light), he also said that Minako Hamano recorded a voice clip for that scene which along with naked Samus, ended up being too inappropiate
I am here 3 years later. It's genuinely funny to think that Mighty Number 9 and Yooka Laylee were meant to be such mindblowing games, that fell as flat as paper
r.i.p satoru iwata :(
The unused cave sound was meant to reference the cave theme from Mother, and the "Magic Butterfly" enemy name could just be a placeholder name like Mother 3, or was meant to be a helpful enemy, like the Walking Bushie.
This intro aged so poorly it's kinda funny
8 Megabits was the original size.
That's how much space the music took ALONE.
It's also double the space for F-Zero.
And all the space for Sonic The Hedgehog.
Did you really have to make it look like the video was buffering?
the creepy cave theme is a version of the cave theme in earthbound beginnings or, mother 1
news flash, we got Earthbound Zero/Mother 1 for the Wii U console now called
"Earthbound Origins"
[TLG] Grovyle Media™ Beginnings.
I think you mean earthbound beginnings
Thanks for walk down memory lane. Can't believe game is turning 20 this year! I still got my original guide and cart :)
16:57
I guess it's kinda obvious but, i think this is a remake of the "Underground" theme of _Mother/Earthbound Begginings_
I'm sure someone's mentioned this already (they _had_ to have!), but the unused cave theme at 16:57 is actually a remix of a cave/dungeon theme from _MOTHER_ (track 14 in the NSF). This follows the trend of various _MOTHER_ tracks being remixed and reused in the sequel, such as the Hippie theme, other cave themes, Winters, Dusty Dunes, the sleep theme, and so on.
0:51 top 10 moments before disaster
11:26 I'm not sure, but I think in my playthrough the photographer actually made a picture of the group in the lost underworld. but maybe I just remember wrong. Awesome video!
Are you sure the Creepy Cave Theme is unused? I SWEAR I've heard it in the game.
It's definitely unused. However, if you have played Mother/Earthbound Zero, maybe that's where you heard it, for it is the creepy cave theme in that game.
roval7 I've barely played any of Mother and I definitely know I've heard this version before. Maybe somebody used it in one of their games or something? I guess that'd be the only possibility...
It's the cave theme in Mother 1
I think he's right. I've never played earthbound zero in my life. Plus I've only played through half the game due to stupid ios emulators and I SWEAR either it's not unused or a copy or VERY similar version of that song is in it
roval7 oh my pork, i never realized that before. O_o
you've got good ears to catch that.
I for one got the powerful T-Rex’s Bat in Jeff’s scenario. Gave it to Ness after he leaves Winters in the Skyrunner and crash lands in Threed. Plowed right through the game til I got to Summers also saved me a ton of cash with it. Great times☺️🤘🏻
Ness: Who needs a backpack anyway? 5:12
7:13 I think the change of position might have been to make more noticeable the fact that Jeff was the one hearing Paula, I have the feeling that character that's "closer" to the screen takes more attention from the player.
I'd love to see a Beta64 for Secret of Mana for SNES, as it's quite similar to Earthbound, as it's actually the the second game in a series (Seiken Densetsu) and had a sequel, Seiken Densetsu 3 that was never released in the US (Sadly, as it's an incredible game too). No UA-cam has done an awesome video on Secret of Mana yet, I NEEEEEED it lol
***** I started the game over again yesterday, the nostalgia is REAL
"Mighty No 9" Oh boy, that one aged like milk. lol
I wonder if there's enough info out there for him to do an episode on Mother 1/Earthbound Beginnings?
Probably.
Hopefully
Debatably
12:39 he protec
but he also atac
btw I guess the butterfly was meant to be used like the walking bushie in mother 3. You encountered him only once in the game, and he heals you during the fight. If you spare it by not attacking, he will peacefully run away.
haha... coming back to this game a few years later is funny "What a time to live!" "Mighty No 9" "Yooka Laylee" HAHAHAHAHHA ........ They're terrible and it physically hurts because we were so hyped.....
Correction: Mighty No. 9 was terrible, Yooka Laylee was sorta disappointing but not bad.
8:11 It could also be the way that dogs jump up to their owners affectionately (notice the tongue as well).
I hope that game isn't personalized too
"... later known as Creatures. Inc."
So thats why Eathbound gives me Pokemon vibes
Remember when we thought Mighty No. 9 was gonna be good?
The unused cave theme is an arrangement of a theme used in MOTHER! Thanks for sharing your findings.
I've always wanted to play EarthBound after playing with Ness on SSB on N64. I think I may have to give this game a try. Also CANCELLIZATION is not a word. It's CANCELLATION.
J Allen - it's been 3 months, hope you've given it a shot by now. Well worth the time :^]
Jimmy ButtWhiff oh my god wow it has. No I haven't and I'm ashamed. I wanted to play it on my emulator on PC but my laptop's lid joint is broken and so I only use my laptop over HDMI so it's hard to get on when you're married and your S/O wants to not just watch Scandal reruns, Love and Hip Hop, Real Housewives and Beyoncé, but apparently cant watch them unless I'm there as well - though I draw the line at Beyoncé. Over Xmas i was gifted with a Wii, a PS4 and a PS Vita. I forgot to check and see if it was on Wii console BUT i specially asked for a Vita with firmware 3.60 or below so I could install emulators. I installed an SNES emulator AND download the EB Rom but I haven't had a chance to start it bc my friends have all wanted to play SSB and Mario Kart. Plus we got the PS4 on OfferUp and it turned out to be a partial scam due to the fact that the HDMI port was broken and i took it to a shop and it took a while to get working and when they did I was a bit beyond immersed in GTA5, Skyrim , Elder Scrolls Online and FF. BUT now that you mentioned it I will definitely give it a try today! I'm excited all over again. Sorry for the book but I'm glad you commented cause I would have gone another year probably. It's another reason I asked for the vita so I can play all my fave retro games on the go.
J Allen - lol yeah Beyonce is talentless rubbish. Anyway it's all good mate. Even then, if you got an Android the play store has emu's, even Snes9x. In any event, good I'm glad, and here's a tip - if you want to avoid certain enemies the moment they walk onto screen, just walk backwards a couple steps until they're off-screen. Should help control how grind-y the game will be 👌👍
I still remember back when Earthbound first released. I knew about it because of Nintendo Power magazine. I thought it looked interesting, so I wanted it. It came in an over-sized box with the official Player's Guide. And surprisingly, it was also value-priced. I will always be SO glad that I got this game back in the day. It became my favorite RPG, and nothing has topped it yet. Even though I still own the original, I downloaded it on the eShop on both my own Wii U and my niece's Wii U, because I wanted to show my support for this awesome game. I love the fact that Earthbound (and now, Earthbound Beginnings) is getting more attention. Lets all keep our fingers crossed for Mother 3, or.......some HD remakes (or brand new entries).

I didn't know about the Beta track for Deep Darkness. I'll have to download that.
Oh man, I almost lost my shit at 14:19
I also love RPGs, but ONLY when they do something new and was fun.
I'd like to credit Earthbound, but my liking of good RPGs started with FF6, and Earthbound cemented myself in the realm of quirky RPGs like Mother.
*****
3:34: "few" rpgs? how about none, before AND after Earthbound. Barring it's sequels, of course. I don't remember a single RPG that "scrolls" HP like that.
9:03: It's Poncho, Pincho, and their good friend Thomas Jefferson!
12:39: Most likely they used "enemy" for a catch all for all sprites on the world map that'll have enemy movement patterns, since I'm hard-pressed to remember any NPC sprites that move on the diagonal while meandering without a scripted action.
17:01: Anyone else notice the last few notes of the "Creepy Cave Theme" sounded like the theme from some of Mother's caves and Belch's/Duncan's factory?
18:47: "What the heck is up with Moonside" besides being a psychic pocket universe being used to protect the Mani-Mani statue?
19:05: I don't find that very creepy, it's just Deep Darkness's theme at a higher pitch and some cymbal sounds really.
Onett would be "one-t" as in 1t. Two son. Three-d. Four Side.

Thank you for making this video! It was really cool. It made the picture of this game in my head like, expand? Like I feel like I see a fuller picture now up some kind.❤
Will you ever do an episode of Paper Mario 64? Or The Thousand-Year Door?
I think that flag might have been the flag of the happy happyists, because of the smiley. And when you mentioned the butterfly enemy, I thought of the Walking bushie from Mother 3. That is an enemy, that doesn't attack, but heals you. So maybe originally they wanted the butterfly to triger a fight, but still make you relaxed or something.
Nice video. I'm a big fan of the series (though Earthbound is my least favourite), but I didn't know a lot of these.
RIP SARUTO IWATA D':
Actually, if I recall correctly, the Magic Butterfly listed in the enemy configuration table *is* in fact the same one that restores PP. I can't recall the exact reason why this is, but I believe it's the same reason guest party members like Poo, Picky, and King are also in the enemy configuration table.
Also, the unused "creepy cave theme" is actually a recreation of the song "Underground" from Mother 1.
*insert "this game stinks" quote*
Lanes yeah, when he says mighty number nine
I love how you closed with the Runaway Five music... Thanks for the great video (from a huge fan of the series).
