I only just discovered the Wailin' Jennys today and all I can say is "Holy Cow, those girls can sing!". I grew up in the shadow of the nation's Capitol and surrounding suburbia in the 60s and 70s; consequently I was raised on a steady diet of The Rolling Stones, Jimmy Hendrix, The Who, Led Zeppelin, etc. It wasn't till I moved out to farm country in 2010 that I discovered the utter beauty of this style of music (it seems a cross between Blue Grass and Country to me, but what do I know?). About the time of the relocation, I also discovered Prairie Home Companion and tried listening on Sunday nights as often as I could. For some reason, I got up this morning and thought to do a search on youtube for any PHC clips and sure enough there were a ton of them. Quite by chance, the first video I selected was one that featured the bass player here singing. I was utterly and completely floored by the melodious, mellifluous beauty of her voice. I did some more research, learned about her band, the Wailing Jennys, and I think it fair to say, I'm hooked! By the way, I love how she (the bass player) undulates and sways as she plucks...sheer poetry in motion and music!
OMG!!! I never even thought to look for this channel. I loved the PHC so much for many years. I haven't seen/heard it in a long time and it made me so happy to see this.
Thanks Bryn. It's neither one of those. I caught the song on the radio while listening to national public radio but didn't catch the title. Prior to this, I have never even heard of the Walin' Jennys, but now I like them very much.
I'll never understand why no-talent goofs like Justin Beiber, Young Jeezy, 50 Cent, Psy, Miley Cyrus, etc., have a bajillion views, and REAL MUSIC like this has only 13K. How did we go from having bands like the Beatles in the 60s, who were not only the most outrageously popular at what they did but also happened to be the very BEST at what they did, to this lousy state of affairs? I just don't get it. Keep making this amazing music, Jennys, I'm listening!
Couldn't have said it better myself, the music industry has been strangled by greed. Bands like this have more talent than all those so called artists put together.
People thought they could make a business out of music and bank money off other people's talent. When the talent decided to go in a different direction telling the business to get bent the business had to try and create it.... it failed... hence... Beiber, Young Jeezy etc etc.... "I know in my time, in my generation, if you had come, if they tried to offer my generation music by someone that had won a game show, it would have been hysterical. You would have been laughed out of the room." Tom Petty.
I'm so glad they reloaded this video after taking it down a few weeks ago. I'm assuming they did so because of the Garrison Keiller issue...and needed to re-brand everything to "Live from Here."
+Don Hornsby and then a man walks by in the background with a paper cup - still the greatest of the great - THIS video ought to be the one with 300 million views - with apologies to our LORDE.
I hear a bird chirping up in the sky I'd like to be free like that, spread my wings so high I see the river flowing, water running by I'd like to be that river, see what I might find I feel the wind a-blowing, slowly changing time I'd like to be that wind; I'd swirl and shape the sky I smell the flowers blooming, opening for spring I'd like to be those flowers, open to everything I feel the seasons change: the leaves, the snow and the sun I'd like to be those seasons, made up and undone I taste the living earth, the seeds that grow within I'd like to be that earth, a home where life begins I see the moon a-rising, reaching into night I'd like to be that moon: a knowing, glowing light I know the silence as the world begins to wake I'd like to be that silence as the morning breaks I hear a bird chirping up in the sky I'd like to be free like that, spread my wings so high I see the river flowing, water running by I'd like to be that river, see what I might find I feel the wind a-blowing, slowly changing time I'd like to be that wind, I'd swirl and shape the sky I smell the flowers blooming, opening for spring I'd like to be those flowers, open to everything I'd like to be those flowers, open to everything
I am going to see them here in New Hampshire this November. Can't wait!!
Just about my favorite Wailin’ Jennys song. ❤
The harmonies are absolutely beautiful, but what I love MOST about the Wailin' Jennys is how they make understatement so powerful.
These angelic voices are soothing, elegant and never tiresome. I recently discovered them and glad I did.
only recently discovered the Jennys and my life is all the better for it!

"I'd like to be those flowers, open to everything." Yes, yes I would. To be fully open to life and all its possibilities.
Amazing! Imagine that. Artists that can actually sing on key live! I could listen to this all day!
8-3-18 has to be some of the best music ever. Damn they are great.
Beautiful...beautiful harmonies. + someone has to mention the very tasteful and very well played guitar!
Thanks Bryn. It's neither one of those. I caught the song on the radio while listening to national public radio but didn't catch the title. Prior to this, I have never even heard of the Walin' Jennys, but now I like them very much.
love all their songs, this one in particular. Great!
WOW! Just astounding angelic vocals. Love it! Thanks so much for posting!!

Literature of all kinds reflect the cultures surrounding them. That's how it occurs.

JustAFocus I'm taking a wild guess that you're not somewhere between 13 and 26?
Just gorgeous! I feel this deep in my heart and in my bones as I listen to it! It gives me the chills!

The syncopated drum literally gives this song a heartbeat.
So much talent in one place.....amazing performance.

Miss the Jenny's. They need to give a shout out to their fans so we know they're okay. Strange days.
Absolutely awesome!!

There's some talent right there! Wow sunburn city on these poor girls.
Wow! Such uniformity in technique and emotion. Beautifully done!
This is just a wonderful performance from the Wailing Jennys! Enjoy

På 💖💖💖💖
My favorite part of this song is the round.
I keep wishing The Jenny's and I'm With Her would share a stage
and here i found my soul
they're great
Elas são incríveis! #fromBrazil
Beautiful, but LOL at the old man wandering across stage around 2:56! Hahaha!
It's historically a "radio theater" production, so the casual set is apropos.
Heck it could be their agent !

I hear a bird chirping up in the sky
I'd like to be free like that, spread my wings so high
I see the river flowing, water running by
I'd like to be that river, see what I might find
I feel the wind a-blowing, slowly changing time
I'd like to be that wind; I'd swirl and shape the sky
I smell the flowers blooming, opening for spring
I'd like to be those flowers, open to everything
I feel the seasons change: the leaves, the snow and the sun
I'd like to be those seasons, made up and undone
I taste the living earth, the seeds that grow within
I'd like to be that earth, a home where life begins
I see the moon a-rising, reaching into night
I'd like to be that moon: a knowing, glowing light
I know the silence as the world begins to wake
I'd like to be that silence as the morning breaks
I hear a bird chirping up in the sky
I'd like to be free like that, spread my wings so high
I see the river flowing, water running by
I'd like to be that river, see what I might find
I feel the wind a-blowing, slowly changing time
I'd like to be that wind, I'd swirl and shape the sky
I smell the flowers blooming, opening for spring
I'd like to be those flowers, open to everything
I'd like to be those flowers, open to everything
lovely, encantado soy
Who's the guy with the dunkin d's at 2:52?
To the 14+ who gave a thumbs down.... go listen to some rap.
If this doesn’t move the universe…
Does anyone know the name of the song they do about orphans?
Motherless Child? I think that may be the one you are talking about.........
Or maybe even Summertime?
2:50 .... lol
The only song by a non-Japanese act to reference 花鳥風月?
Singing is the good part
I miss Jeremy & his fiddle.
the crew showed such disrespect to the musicians. and it was a good crowd.... shame on you, Prairie Home Companion
It was a radio show.
