Well, I would suspect either that on top of that linux doesn't force reboot your computer at a inconvenient time even when you told it not to 500 million times. Plus, most servers like NASA's sometimes need months and sometimes even years worth up zero down time which even windows 10 can't and doesn't even remotely promise to do for computers.
Linus should have explained Linux.

chexier, the only time i actually have problems is when either they decide to add or remove parts of the kernel, which can be adjusted to, i am actually believe it or not, using it now, matter of fact i am so used to thunar now that explorer just doesn't cut the mustard anymore, cool man.
just change your directory to the root and input "sudo rm -r ." and all your problems will be solved.

One of the first videos I watched when preparing to build my pc. I had installed mint on an old laptop due to stability issues with windows 10 and figured do the same on my pc. I installed ubuntu 16.04 on it and just started learning. Always wanting to do something else resulted in another project with much to learn. After awhile on ubuntu I had dealt with many issues that related to having a 1070 and decided to do arch. Complete change of pace but well worth it. Never an issue with arch unless I change something of course. After now it being 3 years I know the ins and outs of both my hardware and my software but of course still keep learning. I never regret choosing linux.
Good choice ! Manjaro did a great Job in deliver a awsome Distro in the Arch Enviroment. Fast, Newbfriendly, ..Bleeding Edge =) ..and yeah btw i use Arch too :P

A: There are user created repositories for installing unspported software and
B: You can install unsupported software manually, but it is a bit more work than on windows since you will typically need to compile it with the make command which is not something your regular consumer would ever understand.

Also, on Linux, if something’s not in the package repo, get it on the web. If it’s freeware that you can’t get on Linux or Mac, use install it like you would on Windows and then use Wine to run it.

@@youtubesucks1111 Apple cost a lot more compared to a pc/laptop and they go out of their way to make things unrepairable, unless you do it through them only. A simple yet makes my point is this and they do far worse. They actually made up new screws that no one else had, to stop people even getting into the the computer. LOL and failed. I-fixet made screw heads to fit!
So because of this kind of attitude from Apple, most times you end up having to buying a new one, because the repair will cost more than a new machine. But if it had been able to open it up and actually fix things in side, most times it costs WAY less. I'm all for the right to repair. If I can't get it repaired where and by who I want, it isn't worth the money.
It's the reason I went Linux instead. By the way since the making of this video, things have improved a lot.
Still not quite there for the person who barely knows where to put thier computer there, but getting there. I'm not a Techie. But it is at the point that even someone like me, can kind of get around with copy and paste for instructions, if the simple solution doesn't work. Takes me a while, but I get there or try something else. But it is a sharp learning curve. But worth it. True not everything works on Linux, but it is getting there and for many there are other programs that may do the trick.
It is more a case of what are my needs now?
Will it do what I need?
Even for those that don't work, will it work in a virtual box for those?
It is a case of been willing to try new things and to accept it isn't going to be smooth sailing till you find your feet. It is just going to take time. As it improves and you improve using it, things will get easier.

There are Linux distributions out now that can be installed and maintained pretty easily by the average user without ever touching a command line. Linux mint is a great example of this. Of course, knowing even the basics of the Linux command line will afford you much more fine grained control over how your system functions.

What's wrong with Windows 10? It's useful for some things. (i actually dual boot (or is it triple?) Windows, Mac, and Linux on one PC) I'm curious as to what they changed to make you flee.
Privacy issues and some hate the design.
I hate Spyware, which windows 10 basically have become, when Microsoft resets privacy settings, force updates, and making the windows 10 installation automatic.

I am lucky, I was raised in a Linux only house. My first computer had Ubuntu than I put Mint on it. Than many more distributions got put on it. To this day I still use Ubuntu as my daily driver. It doesn't matter what computer I get, Linux is getting put on it.
It works well. It's rock solid. It's very secure. Yup.. good decision. I use Mint myself. I like the "easy" stuff, and it's really easy to use.

Linux needs more games (big thumbs up to Steam for supporting this at least) and we need better graphics driver support from AMD/Nvidia.

Wine isn't a perfect alternative, however. Some games have issues and some won't work at all(particularly DX10+ games at the moment and games with certain DRM).
I installed mint today and the process was pretty simple. I actually enjoyed it.

As he said, it's an awesome OS. My main advice is to start by creating a Live USB key of a widely used distro (Ubuntu has, I think, the biggest community) and use it to see if your PC is fully compatible. It will allow you to access most of the OS capabilities without changing a thing on your machine (just know that everything you do will be erased when you shut it down and that it's not the best performance-wise). When you will be familiar with the basic features of the distro and have found solutions to your eventual problems, install it. Ubuntu has a nice, easy to use system for it. Check for online tutorials for detailed process and don't hesitate to ask questions of the forums if needed (just check if someone hasn't had your problem before (the chances of that happening on Ubuntu are really high due to its large and active community)).
Second advice: if you don't like the look of your distro (and to be faire, base Ubuntu and GNOME theme are quite ugly), know that you can modify a lot of things. The GNOME Desktop Environment used by Ubuntu (actually a modification of it) is highly customisable through extensions and themes. I personally recommend the Adapta, Pop, United and Arc themes and the Papirus (and derivatives), Numix Square/Circle and the La Capitaine icon packs.
Third advice: whatever you do and whatever you're told to do, do not execute "sudo rm -rf /" in a terminal. Linux is quite closed to anyone not in possession of the root (or admin) password. But when you have it, you are literally omnipotent. "sudo" is used to execute a command with root privileges. It is for example necessary to install programs, update your OS and installed apps and modify system files. It is extremely dangerous since it gives you root access. It is an abbreviation for Super User Do. "rm" is used to remove a file. Parts of a command given with one or two dashes are options. Here, "-f" tells rm to remove a folder and its content. "-r" is only used when paired with "-f" since it deletes folders recursively. When using -f, rm will stop each time it encounters a folder within a folder and ask you if you still want to remove it. "-r" will bypass that and just delete everything. Since these two are nearly never used separated, we use "-rf". Finally, "/" is the argument (here the folder to remove). On Linux, the "/" folder is the base one. The folder containing all other folders (equivalent to C: on Windows even if C is a drive and / a folder). This means the instruction "sudo rm -rf /" will delete everything on your Linux partition with no exception.
The Linux community is generally extremely helpful but, like every community, we have a few trolls and, even if I never encountered one, I've heard of a few case where people asked for help and some guy just told them to sudo rm -rf /. Needless to say, they were banished from the forums... Reportedly, some distro have implemented safeties to prevent people from deleting their partition but I've never tested it...
In any case, don't hesitate to ask questions if you have some or to read or watch tutos (even if you don't fully understand them) and, if you decide to install a Linux distro, welcome in the community!
It's not too difficult. If you want one that's easy to use, I'd recommend Mint. It has all the easy to use features of Windows, while offering more freedom, better customization, and better orginization. Best part is that it does not spy on you.

my friend was trying to get me to try Linux for a long time and I thought it was too hard. Then I got a PC with WinME installed and after dealing with that POS for a while, Linux was a walk in the park. Haven't used Windows since XP days.

Honestly, after using it for so long, I can't even begin to imagine going back to Windows as a daily driver OS. There are some eccentricities to any Linux distro, sure, but there are also many eccentricities to Windows as well. Considering that I can choose exactly when I want to update my software, updates don't force me to reboot, and updates also apply to things like Firefox and Gimp (among other niceties), well, I can't help but think that maybe the average Linux distro is a bit more _sane_ on a day to day basis than Windows.

Linux is not an operating system unto itself, but rather another free component of a fully functioning GNU system made useful by the GNU corelibs, shell utilities and vital system components comprising a full OS as defined by POSIX.
Many computer users run a modified version of the GNU system every day, without realizing it. Through a peculiar turn of events, the version of GNU which is widely used today is often called “Linux”, and many of its users are not aware that it is basically the GNU system, developed by the GNU Project. There really is a Linux, and these people are using it, but it is just a part of the system they use.
Linux is the kernel: the program in the system that allocates the machine’s resources to the other programs that you run. The kernel is an essential part of an operating system, but useless by itself; it can only function in the context of a complete operating system. Linux is normally used in combination with the GNU operating system: the whole system is basically GNU with Linux added, or GNU/Linux. All the so-called “Linux” distributions are really distributions of GNU/Linux.
No, Richard, it's 'Linux', not 'GNU/Linux'. The most important contributions that the FSF made to Linux were the creation of the GPL and the GCC compiler. Those are fine and inspired products. GCC is a monumental achievement and has earned you, RMS, and the Free Software Foundation countless kudos and much appreciation.
Following are some reasons for you to mull over, including some already answered in your FAQ.
One guy, Linus Torvalds, used GCC to make his operating system (yes, Linux is an OS -- more on this later). He named it 'Linux' with a little help from his friends. Why doesn't he call it GNU/Linux? Because he wrote it, with more help from his friends, not you. You named your stuff, I named my stuff -- including the software I wrote using GCC -- and Linus named his stuff. The proper name is Linux because Linus Torvalds says so. Linus has spoken. Accept his authority. To do otherwise is to become a nag. You don't want to be known as a nag, do you?
(An operating system) != (a distribution). Linux is an operating system. By my definition, an operating system is that software which provides and limits access to hardware resources on a computer. That definition applies whereever you see Linux in use. However, Linux is usually distributed with a collection of utilities and applications to make it easily configurable as a desktop system, a server, a development box, or a graphics workstation, or whatever the user needs. In such a configuration, we have a Linux (based) distribution. Therein lies your strongest argument for the unwieldy title 'GNU/Linux' (when said bundled software is largely from the FSF). Go bug the distribution makers on that one. Take your beef to Red Hat, Mandrake, and Slackware. At least there you have an argument. Linux alone is an operating system that can be used in various applications without any GNU software whatsoever. Embedded applications come to mind as an obvious example.
Next, even if we limit the GNU/Linux title to the GNU-based Linux distributions, we run into another obvious problem. XFree86 may well be more important to a particular Linux installation than the sum of all the GNU contributions. More properly, shouldn't the distribution be called XFree86/Linux? Or, at a minimum, XFree86/GNU/Linux? Of course, it would be rather arbitrary to draw the line there when many other fine contributions go unlisted. Yes, I know you've heard this one before. Get used to it. You'll keep hearing it until you can cleanly counter it.
You seem to like the lines-of-code metric. There are many lines of GNU code in a typical Linux distribution. You seem to suggest that (more LOC) == (more important). However, I submit to you that raw LOC numbers do not directly correlate with importance. I would suggest that clock cycles spent on code is a better metric. For example, if my system spends 90% of its time executing XFree86 code, XFree86 is probably the single most important collection of code on my system. Even if I loaded ten times as many lines of useless bloatware on my system and I never excuted that bloatware, it certainly isn't more important code than XFree86. Obviously, this metric isn't perfect either, but LOC really, really sucks. Please refrain from using it ever again in supporting any argument.
Last, I'd like to point out that we Linux and GNU users shouldn't be fighting among ourselves over naming other people's software. But what the heck, I'm in a bad mood now. I think I'm feeling sufficiently obnoxious to make the point that GCC is so very famous and, yes, so very useful only because Linux was developed. In a show of proper respect and gratitude, shouldn't you and everyone refer to GCC as 'the Linux compiler'? Or at least, 'Linux GCC'? Seriously, where would your masterpiece be without Linux? Languishing with the HURD?
If there is a moral buried in this rant, maybe it is this:
Be grateful for your abilities and your incredible success and your considerable fame. Continue to use that success and fame for good, not evil. Also, be especially grateful for Linux' huge contribution to that success. You, RMS, the Free Software Foundation, and GNU software have reached their current high profiles largely on the back of Linux. You have changed the world. Now, go forth and don't be a nag.

yup. ive been using mint for about 3 years now and have only ever used a package manager once. the rest have been manual.
what about compiling the program. Once I compiled a 40mb binary, let's just say it took 3 hours.
yes, but that's the hard, unsafe way. the easy way is just a single command and you're done, plus you'll always get updates and never end up in "Dependency Hell" personally I only use the method you mentioned if I absolutely have to, otherwise you risk compromising the stability and security of your system.
It's astonishing to see how many games are compatible with Linux on Steam nowadays compared to three or four years ago. As of the beginning of 2019 there are over 9500 games compatible with Linux, either natively or through Proton.

Julian H I misunderstood what the OP said. Yes you cannot disable it unless u edit the registry and probably break the OS.
1. It's GNU/Linux.
2. Pronounced Ubuntu with a hard U.
3. You can download software from the web, and if you're developing anything new, you will. In most cases these will be pre-compiled binaries with install scripts. Worst case, you'll have to type the type the three-command combo configure, make, and make install. (Appimage has recently been gaining popularity, which provides portable linux binaries).

P.S: I triple boot Windows 10, Arch Linux, and OSX El Capitan. I like to think I'm familiar with uefi bootloaders and efi executables.... EXCEPT GRUB. GRUB IS A NIGHTMARE.

1. Linux is a operating system alternative to Windows
2. This video did not explain me how to access Linux, but the guy did say there is a "linux for noobs' video out there
3. Linux is less user-friendly, but less restrictive with its applications
4. Compared to Microsoft windows, Linux runs a lot less memory in the background. Therefor, running apps through Linux is faster.

Within the last 6 months I have made the complete switch to linux, I only use the Windows partition as a bootloader for Steam. I do not regret it one bit. I encourage anyone who is interested into trying Linux Mint or Manjaro, you will not regret it, especially if you have an older PC. I have an old laptop that has less than a gig of RAM, and I was able to find a Linux distro that runs fast on it, idling at around 150 MB of RAM. Linux is truly powerful, and I enjoy the peace of mind that I am not using a spyware OS. It's not that hard to use either. I switched my mother and friend over to Linux Mint XFCE because their computers were getting old for Windows 10. Runs flawlessly, and the only issue that I had to fix was interfacing with an HP printer. I have had more issues myself, but that is because I like to poke around and get myself in trouble. For the average user that just uses the internet, I think Linux is a very good choice, it is lighter-weight and faster than Windows, and is more secure and relatively virus free. You don't even need to use an antivirus in Linux.

I use Linux and I can play all my games for it and I even have a few that are designed for it
I moved the Mint last week and I am glad I did. I'm not very tech savvy and I have had to learn a bunch but it's not impossible and Wine is the easiest thing to use
I don't mean to scare you away, but there's a problem with Mint's *graphical* package manager. If you use the graphical package manager you do not get Linux **kernel** updates. However, I think it works fine for all other updates.
This can be an issue of security -- I've heard of someone who was running a kernel version which had a root exploit, which meant you could exploit a bug to become root, the admin with all privileges.
As far as I know, the way to make sure you get kernel updates is to run "sudo apt-get dist-upgrade". So, try to remember to run this every 2-3 months.

Not sure why people keep saying this. Kernel updates always show up in the update manager, but they're just un-checked by default
dist-upgrade can break things sometimes and kernel upgrade causes problems with nvidia drivers. Distributions use stable kernels, so you should not worry about updating unless someone says that your exact version is vulnerable. But mintupdate does not update some things that can be updated with apt-get upgrade, which is unlikely to break anything.
there is another way to install programs:
1) some programs have a precompiled binary, so install that and run it(usually a setup, sorta like windows)
2) you can always download the source code, and install with whatever tool the use (make, cmake, a install bash script, etc.)

When Windows XP support ended, I didn't want to buy new windows copy, so I started use Linux (and non-licenced Windows 7 copy for games).

Yep mendyc158 meant GUI package manage. AptGet & RPM are still package managed that just are addressed by command line. Personally i'm still a noob who still like GDebi.

It actually isn't but it's based on the Unix model that there should be loads of different small packages that have one function, everything in Linux was written from scratch. Mac OS X is BSD/Unix though.
Unix is owned by Bell Labs, and you need a pretty expensive licence to officially run Unix on your machine, Linux and BSD are Unix-like systems which are free to use, and contain none of the original Unux code.
As for the difference between Unix/BSD and Linux, that's pretty simple. Unix is an operating system, Linux is a kernel.

The Berkeley Software Distribution (BSD) started out as just that; a collection of useful software (such as grep and awk) for Unix. It was bundled with Berkeley's version of Unix. As someone going to school for cybersecurity, I have to say that playing with CentOS server and Ubuntu Server has become insanely fun to me since there is not gui to get in the way. You wanna get something from a URL? There's wget for that. You wanna install something? sudo yum install on CentOS and sudo apt-get install on anything Debian based. It's honestly so much fun to use and even doing things like scripting in it is so easy since it's shell compared to powershell scripting on windows. Everything just kinda works assuming that you've got the right syntax... Until you try to set up an ELK (Elasticsearch Logstash Kibaba) on Linux. Then no matter what syntax you use, the configs just never seem to work 100%

I used almost all major distributions but I faced issues while copying data from pc to usb and it really sucks sometimes we need to copy data 5 to 6 times just for a single file of less then a MB
Actually you can find many applications on the internet already. With Ubuntu, and probably most debian-based distros, you can find an executable file with the extension .deb, which will install the software for you.

An opinion, though; I think that, for basic users, Linux could potentially be the easier and better option than Windows! Think about it; a centralized, curated place for downloading software means that less knowledgeable users don't run the risk of downloading and installing things from risky sites or links, a more secure system means that they're less prone to malware and other potentially dangerous exploits, and a free, lightweight operating system can drastically reduce the price of both the OS (obviously c;) and even hardware, as you could get a lower power machine to run it!
Windows has ubiquity in the home desktop market, sure, but that doesn't mean it's easier to use, certainly!
Not every distribution has a "app store" like Ubuntu-based ones (this includes Mint Main) are. If anything, there will be package managers tied to a repository you can work with. Last-ditch scenario? Download the tarball and start installing from source.
You also don't get caught by malware - I accidentally installed malware (clicked on an ad instead of the proper source from the search) on a friends pc a while ago...wasn't paying attention..then it was 3 days of trying to get the machine back to normal (ended up being a root-kit). You don't get that in Linux... safer...

ki2ne Yeah, but unless you do what I did - and intentionally install it, it won't have much to work with. The security of the "Unix" build is much better than Windows (though, Microsoft is learning and getting it better). You have to ask for a program to install as the admin - superuser privilege - so if a program wants to install itself, you'll be wondering why you are being prompted for a password...

I hope to see full Direct X emulation on Linux in the future, bypassing the whole porting issue. Lack of gaming support being the one legitimate drawback to the platform for a home-PC user, but there have been leaps and bounds on that front, with the, "over 1000 games" now exceeding 5000 fully supported games.

You aren't limited to repositories for your Linux distribution. You can download .deb's if you're on a debian based distro, or use git, or subversion, or unofficial repost such as dotdeb and debmultimedia.
If you're feeling really adventurous, you can download a package and build it yourself, or compile directly from source code. At no time are you limited to the default repositories.
Hell, companies like Google have their own repositories for chrome, so Chrome updates automatically with your system.

I don't mind a steep learning curve. I just want to know If I will be able to game. If I new game comes out will I be able to play it? Or will I have to sit around waiting for fixes to play new titles. What happens it I get a gpu thats got directx 12 is that stricly for windows? does that mean it won't work if i install linux operating system?

I'd wager that Fedora or Ubuntu is easier to use than Windows. Just because you can make Linux difficult, doesn't mean they all are. Don't knock it before you try it.
And don't try it with an NVidia graphics card, because it probably won't work.

Used Ubuntu 10.04LTS for Several years till my laptop died. Upgraded from 9.04 (which was a very stable build -only had minor wifi dropping issue) and remastered with built-in apps on a DVD. I still use it today on my other pc's but I need to upgrade to the new version.
You can find software on websites for Linux as well, but instead of .exe or .msi files, you get packages, like .deb files. It's just that the software centers/repositories are so much better and more reliable that people stick with them.
Packages in repositories are tested for security, reliability and are categorized properly.
Obviously, Linux is the host of LTT!

Make no mistake, the only reason why desktop Linux has not much gaming and other commercial titles is because of corporate decision, on the highest levels, not to support it.
There is absolutely no technical reason why you can't do things on Linux that you can do on Windows/Mac.
Why would anyone think differently. If you're swinging a dead cat, you want to be able to hit as many customers as possible.
Tip: If you are a windows user and want to switch to Linux use the Zorin OS distro because it looks like windows but it is linux + it comes with wine which is an app to run .exes on linux
ubuntu 7.04 was my first OS on my first computer, after getting frustrated with windows ME, i find linux way more user friendly then windows, and it teaches you about how computers and software work

To all those who are wondering whether or not to give Linux a try, my question is: why not? Do you have a spare 20GB on your hard drive? Then try it out! You don't have to commit to anything.
The best newbie friendly distributions are Mint and Ubuntu. Their installers are as simple as Windows installers and they automatically install anything you might need. You're likely not going to have to mess around with drivers more than in a typical Windows installation (in my experience it was none at all).
The OS is light and fast and gives you most of the tools you need straight out of the box.
Oh, and by the way most of the OS capabilities are available off of the live CD before you even install it, so you really don't have to commit to anything. The ISO is only around 2GB so just try it out and decide for yourself if you like Linux or not.

If you install Linux on the same partition on which you installed Windows: Yes you will lose all of the files on that partition.
That is why you should not do that! Instead of that, install Linux on a seperate partition. You can split, merge and resize your partitions via a partition editor (I use and recommend minitool partition wizard 9).
Installing 2 operating systems on 2 seperate partitions is called a dual boot and there are plenty of tutorials on how to set it up.
For Linux specifically: You should also set up a separate SWAP partition so everything will run smoothly.
After setting up your partitions: In the Linux installation, mark the partition on which you want to install Linux as "\" and the SWAP partiiton as "swap". Linux's boot loader is called GRUB2, it will automatically detect all of your operating systems and make it possible for you to choose which one to boot every time you turn your computer on.
