    Would have been great to say the pro's and cons to making your own DNS server locally on your own network at home. It is something I have been thinking about to help speed up the internet even more. If at least large parts of a site I go to every single day are local here, and just have to download what has changed.

    I can't remember the details of it but a few years ago the US had some sort of DNS attack and it caused data to be rerouted to some hackers to steal credit cards or whatever. So the government shut them down and then took over the servers for a few years to give people a chance to fix their own computers. I remember having to manually change DNS settings on all the computers at work because when the government finally shut those servers down the internet didn't work at all.

  • @Matthes_.

    Actually the client (in this case the public dns server) contacts the nameserver, the server for the tld provides only it's domain (and ip if it has the same tld as the original request).

    Actually a 404 error will only occur if you actually hit the web server successfully but the file you're looking for does not exist... You'll usually get a chrome error saying DNS lookup failed or unable to connect to server (or similar error in other browsers).

Sometimes websites that you go to frequently suddenly stop working and you end up spending hours is fiddling with Google searches and settings on how to fix it. And eventually everything is working again. DNS errors are the most common Internet problem I've seen over the years

      @cbremer83 8 років тому

      David Gulbransen True, but with the router doing the work, every device in your network takes advantage of local DNS. And not need another computer or VM doing it like the Windows server solution. For home use the router based solution is the simplest and easiest way to do it.

      I never meant to imply setting up your own DC is simple nor easy, the first time. It offers invaluable experience working with Windows Server OS's, however. I recently set up 2 DC's on my home network and it's been a lot of fun playing with them.

    • @cbremer83
      @cbremer83 8 років тому

      David Gulbransen It's all good. Playing around is nice way to learn anything. I was just trying to pass info along that is more average joe tolerable. PFSense and DD-WRT are easy enough, at least the basics, that any average person with some technical ability can do it. Assuming they have the hardware to do it already. But if you have the desire or the skills to setup a Windows server to handle such task, by all means, go for it.

    He forgot to mention that some servers can host multiple sites from the same ip, without DNS and URL's this would be impractical, or even the fact that you can be given a different IP address based on multiple factors such as your location, or even anything at all about name servers, without which DNS wouldn't really work, when you query an authoritative dns server your request is handed down the line until it gets to the particular name server that holds your entry, but I suppose that's a little to long for a quickie

    I love how DNS/RNS are the german names of DNA/RNA (desoxyribonucleid acid, so the body’s genetics and so on) when they can be used as a metaphor for the internet DNS/RNS.

    cool ... but how does this relate to online gaming. some games may be like, *your dns settings are set to moderate or closed and it may cause connection issues* how would a dns server cause missconections in gaming and multyplayer sessions ?

    What if the IP address of a site changes but a more proximal cache to me hasnt been updated? Wouldnt I be unable to find the site? Is there a way for me to try again and let these cache hosting services know that their information is wrong, so they can go through the whole spiel over again?

    Man I teach a lot of technical topics, and this is absolutely perfect. The analogies, the examples, the depth of the technical details. A masterpiece.

    What prevents someone from setting up their own DNS and override, say, some local business's website?
