why a photo of a hacker is always wearing a hoodie in a dark room using a laptop?
Stock photos
+kirin He had an apple watch this time so it's not even old
+kirin idk the dark room but laptop so he can run away when you found his location
+kirin Because darkness is associated with naughty things
Finally someone notices that! I have been laughing at that for years! Also hackers have green matrixes on their screen where it says "Password" in red in the middle, lol
git as fast as possible
+SuperManitu1
1. install VS2015
2. Clone repository
3. Make changes and press Sync

zero bytes uhh no dont fucking use vs for that, even github for desktop is better
I had to do a presentation about this some months ago,
I spent hours researching.
And now you decide to upload a 5 min video with all the information I needed.
7 years later, this is still one of the best explanation of the concept of DNS on UA-cam.
absolutely!
I love what you guys are doing. These videos help make a bigger picture for me, since I'm in the midst of my Networking education. I'm confident that it helps many others aswell. Thank you!
How's that education going?
Man, techquickie is so awesome. I always come back to these videos and binge watch them to refresh my knowledge about all of this stuff. While drinking a beer.

Small correction: 404 is a HTTP status code, which requires connecting to the web server first.
Yes, but what are you suggesting by this?
@@saurabhchopra Because if your browser is trying to connect to a wrong IP address, there won't even be an established connection, and therefore the error you'll get won't be 404, or any HTTP-level error, but a connection error from the browser itself.
@@Infornografista Do you think there's a small chance that the wrong IP address will be serving on port 80/443 and will give the 404 instead of your intended target?
@@hrford definitely not
@@MrDanielAgger there's always the chance, so it's not a definite no. 😋
Your explanations are great, simple and easy to understand.
Thank you :)
I love techquickie, i learnt so much this video... I've always wondered how my browser knows to connect to a certain website...
Linus, thanks for all the informative videos. Can you explain the difference between DNS and NetBIOS?
thank you! so easy to understand . Just taking IT course, this help a lots .
Thank you for explaining this so exact and yet so easy
Love these videos always reverting back to them time after time.
Would have been great to say the pro's and cons to making your own DNS server locally on your own network at home. It is something I have been thinking about to help speed up the internet even more. If at least large parts of a site I go to every single day are local here, and just have to download what has changed.
THANK YOU SIR! I am in a class called "computer networking" and it is a 4000 level electrical/computer engineering class. It normally make me go crosseyed, but this video summed up multiple lectures in a way that made 100x more sense... Sometimes, its ok to avoid the details (unless your actually doing the engineering behind it lol).
Best description on DNS I ever heard. Nice job.
Thanks a lot! Your one of the best youtubers out there! I would love if you could make videos on Explaining the MotherBoard Components, as i am intrensted it, and is my physics big end of year project!
Interesting. My kid loves to fall asleep on your videos (true story) :)
how is this the top comment lmao
same😂😂
thank you serial killers documentaries
Fact. Serial Killers Documentaries learns from Linus :P
Do you know that i can't wait to watch your Sponsor chapter!! You are sooo funny besides your incredible way to deliver the information.. keep goin plz😍😍😍👏👏👏👏👏
Imagine if you had to memorize and type in IP addresses in binary notation every time you wanted to get to any site...
+BattousaiHBr Because they assume people enjoy using a chart to look it up manually...
8.8.8.8 and use search
But it isn't binary, it's decimal
+Aldo Of course. But I was just thinking what the worst case would be like. A world where you have no interpretation of any notation other than binary for logical addresses. No hex or decimal allowed.
easy
When you see an ad with linus on linus' videos :D pulseaway

Thank you. Your effort is highly appreciated !
@Ryan Vickers thats what i love about the internet
Thanks dude
Hello from 2020
@@severalpeople7482 hello from 2021
Super clear explanation I love it!! thanks a lot
This was so much clearer than the other video that came up when I searched for it. They had way too much animation/politics going on for me. Thanks!
Excellent lighting in this video
Great and simple explanation!
hey linus,,,your videos are very helpful and informative,,,thanks...can you please make an as fast as possible video about BUS
LINUS! You had IPs in the graphics containing 321, 624, 625, 685, 853 and 982! For shame!
"Authoritative list" ya...
+The_Mighty_Birch I'm not following you...
+Occams Razor i noticed and cried a little
samramdebest Did you think I didn't know this?
samramdebest How is your telling me that IPv4 only allows 8bit octets in any way a response to my not understanding what The_Mighty_Birch stating, rather cryptically, "Authoritative list"?
Lol, you might confuse some of the younger portions of your audience with that Yellow Pages analogy.
What are the yellow pages :P
+pingpong1138 A phone book with peoples phone numbers and names

“Yellow pages is for boomers. Lolz. Tik Tok and Insta are what EVERYONE else uses.”

@@tstacey2000 that's the white pages... sorry... had too lol
This is the best explanation of DNS I’ve heard yet. Thanks from a new IT student.

You taught me all computer stuff since 2010 thank you Linus for free lessons nuggets🙂
very-very educative, i really enjoy your channel.
Remember the days before cell phones when you had to remember phone numbers and beeper numbers on top of that you had to remember beeper codes to communicate want u wanted on the beepers.

Thanks for the explanation!
these videos are lifesavers and so understandable
Thx man ! simple and good explained :-)
Thanks your video really helped me
I miss these quick, yet entertaining tech tips.
Thank you for explaining.
I can't remember the details of it but a few years ago the US had some sort of DNS attack and it caused data to be rerouted to some hackers to steal credit cards or whatever. So the government shut them down and then took over the servers for a few years to give people a chance to fix their own computers. I remember having to manually change DNS settings on all the computers at work because when the government finally shut those servers down the internet didn't work at all.
Actually the client (in this case the public dns server) contacts the nameserver, the server for the tld provides only it's domain (and ip if it has the same tld as the original request).
Actually a 404 error will only occur if you actually hit the web server successfully but the file you're looking for does not exist... You'll usually get a chrome error saying DNS lookup failed or unable to connect to server (or similar error in other browsers).
God danm it linus, you could have realed this a week or two earlier as I had a full report to hand in on DNS last week.
Vessel gives these videos a week early
Yes, unfortunately however not everyone has the money to splash on vessel.
Dang, this was the most informative video on how the internet works. great upload
the best explanation thank you man
literally just learned about this in class yesterday, for some reason irs.gov was used as an example as well.
Well explained , thanks
Linus can you explain to me why it's a common problem. That you get a DNS error even though your Internet connection is good at the time. Sometimes websites that you go to frequently suddenly stop working and you end up spending hours is fiddling with Google searches and settings on how to fix it. And eventually everything is working again. DNS errors are the most common Internet problem I've seen over the years
Very well explained video :)
Who else here after Facebook is down?
This is a great explanation of DNS.
Source: Enterprise DNS Administrator
PFsense or DD-WRT (along with other after market router software/firmware) can store DNS info locally, making your browsing and other activity much more snappy.
Or you can set up a Domain Controller in a Windows Server :)
David Gulbransen True, but with the router doing the work, every device in your network takes advantage of local DNS. And not need another computer or VM doing it like the Windows server solution. For home use the router based solution is the simplest and easiest way to do it.
I never meant to imply setting up your own DC is simple nor easy, the first time. It offers invaluable experience working with Windows Server OS's, however. I recently set up 2 DC's on my home network and it's been a lot of fun playing with them.
David Gulbransen It's all good. Playing around is nice way to learn anything. I was just trying to pass info along that is more average joe tolerable. PFSense and DD-WRT are easy enough, at least the basics, that any average person with some technical ability can do it. Assuming they have the hardware to do it already. But if you have the desire or the skills to setup a Windows server to handle such task, by all means, go for it.
Well, you're in luck Linus. When you get in my taxi and tell me "Linus' house" I know where to go.
I doubt you actually know his address/:
you just made me learn how to get any websites' ip. cool!
I saw this on my subscription feed and not through a notification.
Good video. Channels content needs to be organized into logically organized playlists. Regardless, you have a subscriber. Thanks
Just tried to google Linus's House, no luck.
Shame that.
I went from known shit about DNS, to knowing the basics in 5 minute. TY Linus!
Minor detail that bothered my OCD, the stream at 2:05 had many invalid IP addresses. Technically the highest IP that can exists is 255.255.255.255, yet there are some words that as high as the 900's.
Quitting my networking classes and just learning his tech tips, save me some money!
Sorry (hi for my English)

does it safe to using a ccleaner for cleaning the DNS? i see ccleaner have the feature DNS cleaning, does it will affect for long term use? im afraid it will affect my PC
Do a "How the internet works" video series
Will u make some explanation about hpet and other timers.
I had to explain dns in class lol didn't even study for it. Watched this BOOM!
I always watch you u are amazing bro
*[Question] -- Is DNS also a way for your ISP to monitor which sites you visit??? I was always told to use DNS 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4 as that stops your ISP from being able to block you from visiting certain websites. Is that correct???*
just wondering if anyone could help me with this , but is flushdns command really safe to use, will it not affect programs that has its core build as a browser lets say like league of legends client or steam ?
if i get this correctly basiclly after flushdns command the first time i will try to access the site/link it will be slower and then its back to usual self right ?
In the episode where you explained how IPv6 worked, didn't you say that it would allow us to free ourselves from providers and DNS? Do I understand it wrong? I hope you will do an episode to delve into that!
Really?
Very nice Sir 👍
great video all the time..
Thank you!
He forgot to mention that some servers can host multiple sites from the same ip, without DNS and URL's this would be impractical, or even the fact that you can be given a different IP address based on multiple factors such as your location, or even anything at all about name servers, without which DNS wouldn't really work, when you query an authoritative dns server your request is handed down the line until it gets to the particular name server that holds your entry, but I suppose that's a little to long for a quickie
02:10 "and matching URLs" Linus, U WOT M8?!
what malware application do you recommend?
I just learned a shitload about DNS in my Lynda.com Network+ course. Still I learned a few new things in this video. Coolio
Would you know what "Network DNS error" means? I've been getting this notification for months now and it's been hard to keep connected to the internet on my cellphone. Thanks.
DNS server are used to geo loacting your internet support provider or isp. So some sees only ip you wiseted but not the page you read.
Appreciate the video.
Suggestion for another (captivating, witty & wise) episode. Is there any evidence that higher frequency communications to get greater bandwidths are going to cause any problems with our bodies? Will we be slow-cooking our hipbones & femurs as we saunter down the street listening to Spotify?
Damn, this is what I need
Thanks Linus
@Techquickie - Reasons for the Necessity of Clearing DMS comes from KMS not being a Valid registry file within exe32 batch file , just fyi , yea , Just ran across this for The First time , and the circle came back to the dns batch file registry within exe.32
thank you for the tek tip
I love how DNS/RNS are the german names of DNA/RNA (desoxyribonucleid acid, so the body’s genetics and so on) when they can be used as a metaphor for the internet DNS/RNS.
cool ... but how does this relate to online gaming. some games may be like, *your dns settings are set to moderate or closed and it may cause connection issues* how would a dns server cause missconections in gaming and multyplayer sessions ?
Heyyyy NOT FAIR
I was waiting for a Tunnel bear ad
i got mallware in my browser and i've tried some anti-mallware applications but i can't get it away. will deleting my DNS cache work?
What if the IP address of a site changes but a more proximal cache to me hasnt been updated? Wouldnt I be unable to find the site? Is there a way for me to try again and let these cache hosting services know that their information is wrong, so they can go through the whole spiel over again?
I need your help in some project plz help me out you just need to type slabtop on UA-cam the first video that is for 1.45 minutes only is there and can you build it thanks for listening me and plz reply
You can easily understand with that explanation how centralised DNS is. Hopefully web3 domains will change that
Man I teach a lot of technical topics, and this is absolutely perfect. The analogies, the examples, the depth of the technical details. A masterpiece.
You are great
What prevents someone from setting up their own DNS and override, say, some local business's website?
Nice presentation
does this system of cache works when you use incognito modes?
