You would think their parents grandparents uncles aunts, someone in their family would have talked to their teen about the danger if they shoot at people, especially a police officer and a horse officer. What did those toys looked like real fire arms? Had they pointed it at a police officer they could’ve been shot and killed. And then everybody’s gonna scream how bad the cops are when the blame is completely 100% their parents! My three boys had , paintball guns, the same pellet guns this chief is talking about, and BB guns. I gave them a very firm talk and what they were allowed to do and what they were not allowed to do. I was very strict when it came to my kids having any type of play gun. I’m also a retired LAPD police officer/detective, hopefully parent doesn’t have to be a police officer to have good common sense and have a sit down. Talk with their kids when they have these type of toys. Thank God that officer gave these kids verbal command. They put the toy guns on the ground and raise their hands. There are so many toys out there that look like the real deal. I think they should be outlawed. When my boys were little, they never had a play gun. I never wanted them to associate a firearm with play. it wasn’t until they were 14 that they got any type of play gun. My two older boys competed in paintball tournaments. Had they acted a fool at any time, I would’ve taken all of their play guns!!!!! It saddens me that you have to get parents to parent their kids by making them pay restitution . When I first joined LAPD, didn’t have to pay restitution. Not only do they have to pay restitution, but they have to pay for the sentencing. Their child receives in juvenile hall. You have to hit parents in their pocketbook to make them do their job. smh

Unfortunately, blaming it on the parents is probably not correct, you do not know where or how they got them.....and guess who payed my fines? I did. My parents never paid a penny. I got myself into the mess, and I need to get out of it.
Parents should teach fun safety and it should be brought back into the classroom. Also, bring back "A Christmas Story" and watch it before Christmas like FAMILY used to do.

Playing certain video games as a child has been proven to have 0 correlation with committing crimes as an adult much less the use of any toy weapons. The overwhelming majority of law abiding citizens you see every day grew up with the exact opposite of how you raised your children playing with toy guns and “violent” video games and turned out to be completely normal adults. The real issue is that parents nowadays have no control over their children or discipline them.

She was a second year medical student at EVMS and as a result of her injury she lost her sight in her right eye thereby seriously hindering her aspirations of becoming a trauma surgeon. The young man that pulled the trigger was charged as an adult and got 5 years in the Virginia State Penitentiary for the crime of malicious wounding. So, I would say pretty serious.

I have no idea what type of toy gun projectiles these kids were shooting but ONE thing I do know about horses is they react to almost any sudden stimulus in some way.
