  • Two strangers at a wedding reception make an unexpected connection.
RECEPTION is used with permission from Joe Gillette. Learn more at vimeo.com/joegillette.
Paul is the best man in a wedding, watching the post-ceremony proceedings with an air of detachment and melancholy. While he's surrounded by an atmosphere of love and happiness, he's clearly not quite feeling it himself. But as he tries to avoid the crowd, he meets Jessie, and the conversation between two strangers eventually turns into a spark.
Writer-director Joe Gillette's short romantic dramedy is a sweet, witty slice of life that focuses on how people really truly connect to one another. In a genre where the "meet cute" is often a little too clever, facile and clouded in fantasy, this short is well-scripted, with an eye to explore genuine emotional resonance, especially among ordinary people who struggle with simple everyday awkwardness.
With such honest, compelling dialogue, the performances stand out, achieving a verisimilitude emphasized by the film's minimalist visual approach. Essentially a long conversation taking place between two people, the camera keeps the attention tightly on the two actors, giving the audience the privilege of watching two people come out of their shells and spark a connection between two people.
RECEPTION is simple and elegant in execution, but the ideas and feelings underlying this small-scale gem are messy, complicated, vulnerable and compelling. Open-hearted and sincere, it just may inspire viewers to look at life through the lens of opportunity -- and expand horizons in their own everyday way.

Interesting Imagination. She did notice but Best Man gets first to speak - So may have been just normally noticing.
In India we will never have situation like these. No best friend would marry a girlfriend. If they do - The best friend would not attend the marriage.
If they do - They will never be BEST MAN

I lost my bestfriend in similar way.... I dont know if out of respect to his fiancee or if she was jealous as hell, but a 15 y friendship ended when I was not invited to the wedding and he cut me off as a friend without any explanation whatsoever... just drifting apart! We didn´t even were dated we were friends only (but with benefits one time only we drank too much) and that was it. Ages before she came along.... and I encorage him to date her, marry her.... and at the end was uninvited! Weird thing!

Very true. I think people forget the context of the conversation, as well. This isn't two people on a date, where both are expected to equally contribute to a flowing conversation. They are two random people who are slowly and spontaneously getting to know each other. The conversation is bound to be choppy/awkward in the beginning.

That’s a fact! And mine was compounded when I literally got a text back shortly after that moment from the girl I’ve liked for a couple years who I wasn’t sure liked me back! The message said that I’m such a good friend. Noodle shot of the century… UNTIL she said she was just kidding. So guys… This is your formal invitation to my wedding. (Keep your calendars clear for 2023. LoL.

I’m divorced after being married for 35 years, never expected to meet someone who would mirror who I am. This short film reminded how lucky I am to meet my partner by walking into a restaurant and seeing her at the counter. After 4th time going there, when I pay my check, I slipped her my phone number with bill. She texted me 3 weeks later and wish me a Happy New Year. From then on, we’ve been together for 4 years

I like the character progression displayed here. Jess at the beginning said that she constantly checks on her phone, yet throughout their convo, she hasn't reached for her phone once. Paul, told a story about how he's a wallflower and that he didn't have anyone to dance with at the prom, but by the end of it he asked Jess to dance

This was perfect. It wasn't too long, it wasn't too short, I loved the characters and the character progression. I love the actors, the set, the way it made you feel like there was actually a wedding reception going on off screen. I love the stories and the conversation. It was relaxing and exciting, and then you hit the let down at the end when she starts walking away. Only to be brought back full circle and finding somebody to dance with. Freakin' perfect.

Dunno what to talk about and yet I met this beautiful woman a few years ago, we had good conversation, then we kinda drifted apart. Now I see her regularly again. She looks a lot like the woman here. And I am so keen to make it work with her but I am hopeless at knowing what to say. She likes him a lot. He's not bad either.
Here's my analysis on her thoughts and what happens:
    7:15 Teasing and a compliment
    8:52 Mirroring
    10:35 'I like you'
    10:56 'Aw, that's so sweet'
14:08 First clue. She basically says it out loud. She really IS invested. Into him. His life story.
16:00 More mirroring. He knows his stuff
16:23 She tests to get his reaction.
17:03 First usage of the word 'we' as in 'we're a couple'
    Acknowledging the connection they have
17:22 'I really, really like this guy'
    17:52 Intense Eye Contact
18:30 'Look, I'm touching you. We're officially flirting right now.'
19:21 'Now's your chance. Ask me out!'
19:29 'Okay, you didn't get the message...'
19:37 'Second chance. You'll never see me again!'
    20:12 'Third strike. I'm out.'
20:16 My face, usually, after she leaves
    20:21 'FINALLY!'
And men say women don't try... I wish a woman worked this hard to get me.
Update: thanks for all the Likes, guys.
I first thought, I'm like him but I am more extroverted and social so I guess I'm like her.
    I just realised that.
And I really loved how she seduced him
