  • With the headlines dominated by Lucy Letby, the most prolific child killer in modern British history, Nish and Coco reflect on the proper role for politicians in cases like this. While we crave reassurance from figures in authority, should they resist the urge to wade in with an easy soundbite? Plus we also reflect on the other big story of the week, the women’s World Cup final, and ask why it’s always men in suits who have to spoil things?
With music venues and nightclubs shutting at an alarming rate, Nish and Coco talk to music agent Hannah Shogbola and DJ Gaia Ahuja about whether the UK’s nightlife is in crisis. Do politicians place enough value in the night time economy? Can anything be done to reverse the trend, or is it as an inevitable result of our changing cultural habits?
Also, why ‘Insomnia’ should be Coco’s current club anthem of choice, and why newsrooms are enjoying the comeback of the August ‘silly season’. Plus we celebrate some world class swearing, and Nish has some ideas for the new Conservative Party general election slogan.

I live in America. Hearing a British correspondent say so casually, "The American Republican Presidential debates are happening today. Donald Trump is, of course, skipping the debates. I’m sorry but the clubs segment was one of the weakest guests this pod has had. People not staying out til 7 am as much or spending less on alcohol isn’t inherently bad. Have we considered gen z might not like clubbing as much? In my experience clubbing involves a lot of peer pressure towards overconsumption. There's nothing for it - time to go back to underground gigs and clubs, squat and warehouse parties, and free festivals. Gentrification, neo-liberalism and Home Counties social conservatism/authoritarianism helped screw the scene over. The likes of Glastonbury arre really now just Glyneborne for the (white) upper middle classes. Birmingham has a lot of varied nightlife, our issue is that a lot of tours skip us, comedy, live music, and theatre shows (the Alexandra and Hypodrome get a lot of good theatre/ballet/musicals but not as much as it used to)
I remember when Muse were on tour they went to 16 venues, but it was only after the first tour dates were all sold out that 6 months later they added Birmingham in a smaller venue than what would have sold out and it went in a day.
Also, funny nightlife people don't realise is getting big in the UK is Professional Wrestling, we have some of the most recognised training academies world wide and have several indy promotions popping up or hitting anniversary dates, and the bigger promotions are taking more interest as well (Will Osprey got in to the Metro for changing the name of the NJPW US title to the UK title, and he is gonna be in Wembley on 27 Aug ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ )

I love getting up at 4 in the morning (perfect to go for a run). However, because there is shitty music playing loudly outside my flat until midnight and it's too fucking hot to ever close my windows, that's completely impossible.
In other words: First time I wholeheartedly agree with your main point of the show. Besides, the argument that nightlife is good for the economy is massively misleading. If there is no money to spend, no one can spend it on the nightlife. And if the money exists, it will either be spent elsewhere or support the nightlife anyway. Additionally, the fact that I can type this here is an indicator of the fact that many aspects of entertainment are being digitalized and individualized. This is the way forward, a) because that's pretty much unstoppable and b) because it's preferable. I will most likely never be able to enjoy Nish Kumar in person, and at the same time I don't care for any live performance that happens in my medium sized Austrian city. Also, individualization that is done well can benefit creators as well, if they find the direct line to their audience. And the cherry on top (or the main argument for a lefty) is that monetization can also be individualized as it happens on Patreon these days.
And I know what you're saying: Right now, it's certainly not creator friendly, because they are expected to provide free content and just hope that some people will enjoy it enough to throw them a couple of bucks/euros/pounds. Yet ultimately, with this as a starting point and appropriate measures to boost culture we get a lot farther than with shitty music keeping people from sleeping.

    • @DrZaius3141
      @DrZaius3141 Рік тому +2

@@Emanon... That's your argument? Getting an AC? Apart from the fact that it's expensive and bad for the environment, it's also not really a solution - because you still need fresh air. So of course I could get fresh air in during the day and then pump up the AC even more the rest of the time, but that just aggravates the first two points.
And move? First off, that's like lighting a cigarette, blowing smoke into someone's face and then telling them that they should go away if they don't like it. Why should the clear aggressors have the say in who may stay? Secondly, not everyone is rich enough to move to quieter places. Thirdly, last I checked cities are supposed to be a place where people can live. Fourthly, no one said to close down everything, but giving people the right to noise pollution well past midnight is just selfish bullshit. Most cafes I know don't play loud music at 1 a.m.
Also, this leads me to the next horrible argument made that "oooh, it's rich people that are complaining" - guess what: A lot of poor people would probably complain (because as alluded to earlier, they are the ones who are suffering the most from rich businesses blaring loud music), except that no one listens to them. Unless they're also minorities in which case calling the police for noise complaints is even more laughable.

The nightclub culture, the music scene, pubs, comedy clubs etc, the problem is in the question. Culture.
We see 'Culture' as a class thing but what it is is 'how we do things'.
The people in power want a homogeneous culture because it would be easier to control than accepting that the UK culture is actually lots of smaller cultures that overlap and co-exist but that is complex and hard to control so they gentrify, they use platforms to destroy and consolidate industries, as they make the power consolidate they get more control and when they do they have more control, so it serves them to have people think and act, have the same 'how we do things', culture, to get the people to self- and mutually police and oppress.

This is fascinating as an American viewer, as many of our cities have night life activities however it seems only the major cities have anything equivalent to a club culture. I'm in a mid-size city and we maybe have one true club, and everything else is a bar first and a "club" second. What's unique, and this is perhaps partially due to being in the South as well, but it seems they are routinely threatened by the local beer board until they are closed. Then one starts up again and its the same story that repeats. Part of the issue is America's culture of violence can often show itself when drunk people have easy access to weapons, a volatile mix which often causes incidents that help push these shutdowns, but also we as a city certainly prioritize downtown residents over the night life. This can perhaps be contradictory as more people are moving downtown again and its often young people who want the night life, but of course I imagine some of the people living downtown also might be the ones complaining. Anyways it's been fascinating to hear this! Thanks as always for all you do with this show.

So I'm an longstanding British fan of Pod Save America, who's previously worked for a member of parliament and now does policy for charities. A major ingredient of what makes PSA work is that Favreau et al all have serious experience in the White House at governining, and draw on that. They aren't just oppinionated and entertaining, their passion is underscored with serious insider knowledge. Having watched a few of these, I think Nish and Coco are entertaining and their perspectives are valuable, but I think this show would be much stronger if it had someone with serious Government or Parliamentary experience to round out a trio. There's been quite a few times we're Nish or Coco have said something inaccurate that would be picked up instantly by anyone with more experience of parliamentary process or pubnlic policy. Prisoners who have done heinous things and refuse to show up to their sentencing hearing are trying to exert some final facet of control over their lives. If you take that away from them, you will overstrain the prison system after the fact with a potential rash of suicide attempts. @@NortarachangesI don't think a liberal society should compel anyone to listen to anyone. That's just moral theatre. I know it's hard, but we do actually have to let people be as bad as they want to be. You can't compel people to be decent.

@@Nortarachanges I think, in a restorative justice system, yes it’s very important for perpetrators to hear the pain of victims, and for victims to express that pain. However, the system as exists now is a retributive justice system, therefore encouraging punishment and negative reinforcement. Fun thing about people who’ve already learned it’s possible to paint outside the lines: they have more extreme reactions than most people. Constant and unceasing negative reinforcement will lead to the one exercise of control they can muster.
Listen, I do say this out of concern for prisoners, but I think even the more practical argument is compelling: our prison system is an ailing mess, already being sold to the private sector - though not quickly enough for some at the top - and creating a situation where you’re *more* likely to have uncooperative prisoners who are a risk to themselves and others puts strain on the people who already work a thankless job in that system.

@@EdwardLindon I wholeheartedly agree, and would especially emphasise the point about moral theatre. When you lose somebody, or a part of yourself to a crime, part of the healing process is processing what was done to you, and that it was done by another person with the same fullness of experience as you. It’s hard, but it’s a necessary part of growth and healing. In instances such as this, part of that is accepting that the perpetrator won’t acquiesce to your bidding. You don’t get some cathartic reversing of roles, and dwelling on being able to have that won’t help people, it will make them feel superior and leave their trauma unresolved.

In my early 50s, my night life has decreased massively and not because I don't want to go out anymore... it's just become less and less accessible for me. Thank you for including folks like me in the conversation. Brilliant episode! The nightlife discussion was so brilliant I recovered from cringeing at Infantino's bs

The whole kiss n hug at the world cup is a bit of a storm in a cup...
The player spoke out against it. The offender apologized. And they've both agreed that it was probably a misunderstanding given the elevated state of their emotions. Spanish culture is different than Anglo culture (thank god!) when it comes to kisses and touching.
There's really nothing more to that story.
Let's focus our energy on things that matter.

I don't know much about Spanish culture, but I've spent a lot of time in France where kissing on the cheek is a form of greeting and while it was uncomfortable for me as a Brit, you get used to it and it is normal there. However, kissing on the lips is not a normal greeting in France and I assume it's the same in Spain. The player was right to speak out, and yes the offender should have apologized, but men kissing women on the lips without consent should not be normalised, so we absolutely should talk about it.

touching people without consent is bad, period. add in it occurring while working and being recorded/viewed by tons of people…yep, still bad

      I absolutely agree. It's bad.
But a stupid mistake, and this was a stupid mistake in a heated moment, is not the same as systematic abuse by people in power.

I don't think this is a one off stupid mistake for this guy though. He is a person with authority, maybe he got swept up in the moment, that wouldn't be a good excuse for me punch someone in the face, why is it a good excuse for nonconsensual kissing? Even when you're excited, you're expecting to manage your actions. That's what it means to be an adult.
