    I'm by no means a war-hawk and I have a strong bias as a Ukrainian American, but all these delays on weapons have hurt Ukraine substantially. While it's true there isn't a single weapon which is a golden bullet, there are TONS of examples of Ukraine not having weapon X hurting them substantially. One of the largest examples was during the Zaporizhzhia counter offensive and not having the longer range ATACMS to take out Russian helicopters. I get it's easy for me to be this aggressive, but at the same time this war has been going on for far too long to not allow Ukraine to strike military targets inside all of Russia and I've grown very tired of the US being concerned about "escalation" when the reality is Russia has zero shot against NATO and Russians know this too. They've escalated already all they realistically can.

    • @Bvi9169
      @Bvi9169 2 місяці тому

    • @jmhorange
      @jmhorange 2 місяці тому +4

      The US has every right to be concerned about escalation. The fact that you think Russia has zero shot against NATO is troubling. Russia and NATO would not be fighting a conventional war, they would be fighting a nuclear war. That's because if they fought a conventional war like what's going on in Ukraine, they know if they crush the other side, then the other side will turn to nukes as a last action than concede defeat. But not only that, both sides while they are fighting a conventional war has to worry about at any moment one or the other side using nukes to get the drop on the other side. It's not only the losing side that could use nukes, you could be losing the war, thinking about how to make a comeback, and all of a sudden the winning side decides to launch nukes.
      With all that uncertainty of a conventional war between nuclear powers, it would be in both the US and Russia's best interests to fire nukes as quickly as possible in the hopes they can take out the other side as quickly as possible and hope for the best on their side.
      The war is going on too long because Western leaders have not been honest with the public. The LA Times 3 days after the war started said unless the US is willing to put American boots on the ground in Ukraine, Ukraine will lose the war and we'll be sending Ukrainians to their deaths just like the US did when it encouraged a Ukrainian insurgency in the 1950s. That statement is as true today as it was at the beginning of the war. Escalation will keep Ukraine in the fight but it will not help them win. And an escalation of letting Ukraine fire rockets into Russia is a bridge too far that could pull NATO into the war. Not only that but there are lots of countries surrounding Russia, including China. All of them have their own national security concerns and a Russia being hit with rockets and war on their land could trigger a refugee crisis like what happened with Ukrainians fleeing to Europe. And large scale immigration politically destabilizes countries. So you are giving countries surrounding Russia a reason to help Russia, not because they necessarily agree with Russia's war but because they need to protect their own national security. And that doesn't cover all the countries that trade with Russia that could suffer from turmoil in Russia that could rush to Russia's aid. The world is bigger than the Ukrainian war. None of this would serve the US's interests. Biden said he's uncomfortable lifting sanctions. Biden's responsibility is to the American people, not Ukraine. Our national security needs must come first in any functioning country.
      With all due respect, you do sound like a war hawk. I'm sure if you talked to people you think are war hawks, they would have reasons just like you and reject the term. But we Americans really need to actually think of the ramifications of the choices we make as a nation.

Also battery failures involve lots of smoke.

      I copied this from my above post: 'm no expert but I can't think of a way you could take a stock pager and cause it to explode, unless it was charging. Plus the batteries in a pager are small so if they were to explode the danger would more likely be them setting fire to furniture. If the pagers were modified by Israel with some sort of explosive then I would think they'd also make them so they could 'eavesdrop' on communications, which would be invaluable information. So why would they want to destroy such a good intelligence source?
      If someone has found a way to make batteries inside electronics explode via a signal of some kind then we are all in trouble.

It's tragic that the end result would be to make Israeli's less safe, but how can the US realistically afford to remain wholeheartedly supporting this government? You can't have an operation that's going to affect the most numbers of Hezbollah terrorists without also getting some bystanders, especially if they are all mixed in with the civilian population. They don't care if they put others at risk. Just ask the other Lebanese people that hate Hezbollah and what they are doing to their country. Some of them put out an imagine of what the pager message must have been: "castrate the Hezbollah" members. About the French PM: I think the only solution will be to find a tolerable more centrist candidate from the leftist coalition (the Nouveau Front Populaire). It's actually a very wide coalition, including center-left to far-left and fairly extreme parties. It might be a difficult process to find such a candidate, but there is bound to be an acceptable center-left candidate in there somewhere. I do understand the hesitancy of Macron to appoint a PM from the extreme wing of the coalition. Le Parti Socialiste is probably the biggest more centrist (for France) party to pick from. The party has been in very serious decline of the past years, but has been somewhat re-enforced through this election. Picking a PM from La France Insoumise (the party of Melonchon) is, I think, always going to end up with trouble. And make no mistake, Melonchon brand of demagoguery and ultrapopulism isn't very savory either. La France Insoumise has traditionally been in favor of rethinking France's membership of NATO as well.

      I think that this is largely because of the fact that they are State Actors Even if the organizations are not classified this way - Tommy talked around this right at the head of hte podcast - any other party undertaking an action like this - it would have immediately been called an act of terror. I firmly believe that this is what this is - an act of terrorism. It's deplorable, frankly. No one seems either invested in, or capable of reigning in Isreal's behaviour, and how it clearly will destabilize the situation further.

    Okay, I've never commented on these vids but I gotta talk about Pokemon Go. That game was built off the back of another augmented reality real world location based video game called Ingress. Ingress was about a vague alien conspiracy where different factions tried to establish area control by establishing markers at prominent locations in the real world. Those hotspots from Ingress became Pokemon Go Pokestops and likely spawn zones for new Pokemon. So popular locations would become these heat zones. When I lived in DC it was always folks roaming the FDR Memorial. Anyway, the way Ingress and Pokemon got locations added as nodes was through public requests and pictures. My guess is that if a military base became a hot spot it's because their own personnel were playing either Ingress or Pokemon Go and made the nodes themselves. Niantic, the maker of the game, got in trouble a couple of times if I recall, for having these nodes on military bases because it was both a security risk identifying the location, but also it encouraged the public to go there to collect Pokemon or capture faction nodes on Ingress. I played both games a LOT and remember these things from the heydays of it.

Russian generals lead very privileged lives as things stand. Any response from the West, and possibly China, to nuclear weapons will likely cause such harm as to end their comfortable lives. If they have to choose between Putin and their lives of privilege, I'd see them choosing themselves.

    Great episode, I loved that you included Ukraine and just said the hard truth about the elections. I wish the (mainstream) media would take their responsibility and talk about escalation and the two key players building their policy on top of a Donald Trump win. Loved the other stuff too, but Ukraine and Russian aggression (so also Georgia and the Sahel conflicts) is very important to me.
    About lobbyist claims, wunderwaffen don't exist, but it is also infuriating that slow decisions and deliveries enable Russians to prepare. So lobbyist statements about possible effects not being true is a bit rich (and not taking Michael Kofman's but the extreme opinions), since the way deliveries are set up, is often to make effects of deliveries a lot weaker than possible. Many SU34s could have been taken out, if decisive action was taken. This might all be intentional to cook the frog, but also means a heavy losses for Ukraine that they now have trouble to replace. That problem was created by policy. A cynic might say maybe also to push Ukraine to the negotiation table. (Though Ukraine deserves a fair part of criticism for the failed offensive) Which would be the opposite of giving Ukraine the best hand at the negotiation table.
    Anyway thanks 🙏

    The Israeli pager attack quite demolished Israel's oft-asserted respect for civilian life during its military operations. Israel has long claimed that it uses near surgical precision in targeting enemy combatants and does its utmost to avoid civilian collateral fatalities. The pager attack gives the lie to Israel's declaration that it wages war in the most scrupulously moral way possible...and the indiscriminate nature of the attack--wherein non-combat zones and civilians were terribly impacted--has instilled a sense of terror in citizens. Hence this was an act of terrorism: Terrorism infects citizens' lives with a sense of terror through degrading their sense of security and normality.

    At the risk of being Kissinger-esque, from a tradecraft perspective, the Israeli operation was absolutely amazing. Hezbollah is leery of cell phones because they (rightly) believe that Israel has penetrated them (duh) so I can totally see pagers as a way of randomizing call-back numbers and making it more difficult to track. And then the RADIOS? Brilliant. Simply brilliant. And that's no battery malfunction. That's some engineering. And before the comments jump on me, yes I do understand that children were harmed ("Daddy, your thing is going off! Here it is....") but the moral failing of every single aspect of this conflict is so pervasive that this pales over the course of any given day. It doesn't seem "random" -- it's very specifically targeted to Hezbollah targets. Seems more specific than a Hellfire missile or a freakin' airstrike. As a mind-fuck, it's pretty overwhelming.
    Had I been born as a Palestinian refugee, I'm not sure who I'd be more angry with but the neighboring Arab states who cleared populations for their invasions ought to rank high on the list. I'm a rabble-rouser at heart so I expect that I'd have been one of those rock-throwing, bomb-tossing young men. I have deep sympathy for the Palestinians but they are totally screwed by their own leadership and the rest of the world. I am far less sanguine about Israel's prospects under more-right-leaning governance -- the peril of becoming the thing you fear is real.
    The Armenians have a long memory. The Irish seem to be getting over their own brutalization at the hands of the English (yes? please? rare bright spot!). I'm amazed that the Native Americans aren't more pissed. I'd like to think that there's some path forward for an integrated society in the state of Israel but I'm not holding my breath.
