@@kamadotanjiro1241 I guess they expected his will to fight would have been crushed at that point, he was outnumbered, his weapon was broken and he was on the ground, all disadvantageous scenarios in a fight. It may have also been the "smart" and "obedient" thing to do as a slave but Spartacus at that point in the series was all about that smoke.
This scene is so awesome. I loved how Spartacus didn't bother to pick up any metal swords the Romans had dropped. He didn't need them and wanted to prove a point. They had a caged beast that had out grown his captors... and they didn't even realize it. RIP Andy, you truly made season 1 an incredible show.
He wasn't allowed them. For a slave to bare arms, even ordered or in self defense, against a legionnaire is a death sentence. He was only allowed the wooden swords due to the fact they are not considered arms. If he grabbed the metal sword, he would immediately forfeit his life. Even if THAT was forgiven, the moment he used the blade of a soldier, he would be guilty and thus executed. We see this situation used later in the series, where a Gladiator is ordered to attack and try to kill his master. The Gladiator realizes he will die either way, be it by law or by his master's blade.
@James Gray Well because he is a slave in a gladiator school. He is using wooden swords, aside from the Roman guards here who were armed, there were most likely more outside the room and not to mention his Dominus has guards of his own that are armed. If he decided to just attack Glaber (who is a Legatus) and Batiatus (his Dominus) then he doesn't even know if the other gladiators would even join him because this is before he secretly plotted with everyone to take down the ludus and break free and he didnt have half the support because half the people in there look at Crixus as the champion. So there's all of those factors plus the biggest threat of all which is Oenomaus, the Doctore/Trainer of the gladiators who is arguably equally as skilled as Spartacus. Bottom line is if Spartacus just decided to try and kill everyone in there it most likely wouldn't have gone well for him especially since Crixus hadn't even lost Naevia yet and would have had no motivation to help Spartacus and would also most likely help in subduing him and if both Crixus and Oenomaus are going after Spartacus then he won't win on his own. Seconds after this scene though the woman Crixus loves was being rubbed up on by Ashur and Crixus lost it and beat the fuck out of him in front of everyone and then he was whipped and Naevia was sold to another slave master and then they poisoned Crixus in order to secure Spartacus as their champion for political gain so that's what finally motivated Crixus to help Spartacus break free. So if you have watched the series you'll know Spartacus needed the support of all the gladiators to break free, and he had half of them against him because they followed Crixus who was his rival and who hated Spartacus in S1.
Spartacus might be one of the best shows I've ever seen. The dialogue and the plot were outstanding. And Andy Whitfield was beast on screen. It's sad an unfortunate that his talent was taken so soon. He's one of those actors who's career I would have enjoyed following, like Denzel Washington.

Hugely underated show. Better than GOT in my opinion.
Spartacus was fun.
The sex and the violence were what made the show so great... THAT was Rome at its most decadent! Such a shame that they rushed it and didn’t give it a good 5 seasons instead of 3.... Still one of my all time favourites.
Best series ever, fan from India 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉
Imagine this man was dying of cancer and still had the best physique in the entire show it is nuts his level of dedication
Well I dont know about that...but he was in great shape and to be going through all of that. WOW what a great Actor and a great Man
@@spectermad9180 regardless of which at some point he had cancer forming and its crazy to think of his dedication I couldn't do it
I've quited watching all the seasons without him. He was the best at it. Rip
Andy could have easily been the next James Bond had he not passed away so young.
I respect the fact that this epic scene was posted 13 years ago 😊
One of my favorite scenes. I wanted Spartacus to kill at least one of the guards in front of Glaber, but I know Spartacus would’ve been punished severely. I love the looks on everyone’s face, even crixus seems to recognize that Spartacus is more than a man when he fights. He’s a god.
Who else here in 2021 to enjoy moments from this great show ? RIP Andy
