So I was in the Navy for 11 years and what strikes me the most from this tragedy is the absence of tugboats guiding this massive ship out to sea. Where are they? Where's the Pilot? Tugboats are there for this exact scenario. This is a fail at the very miniscule foundation of navigation, and maybe even engineering. RiP.
This boat may have had bow and stern thrusters which essentially eliminate the need for tug boats. Lots of modern cruise ships can port entirely on their own nowadays.
@@garrettwill1220 no sir. Never the protocol to berth on your own without a Pilot in the Bridge or tugboats around. Doesnt matter if you got 10 thrusters around. This is a tragic fail and it killed people smh.
@@flexman70not american nor do i really know about protocol around bridges, but I worked at a port for years and saw countless cruise ships dock themselves without the need for a tug.
The Pilots drive these boats out of the port. They are trained to know the terrain of that port area. This was a loss of power and you can’t steer a ship without power.A tragic accident that hit the bridge at the worst spot.
No. there wasn't enough time for tugs to do anything. When you are dealing with a ship this big time is different. Everything has to be planned way way in advance. And what would the tugs have done anyway? That container ship weights 234 million pounds fully loaded. Would have taken lots of tugs at least 5-10 minutes to significantly change the course and speed of that much brute weight.
It looks like all public cars had passed and nobody but the workers were in that area of the bridge. Thank god I keep hearing about 6 workers but wasn’t sure why nobody else was mentioned. They saved a lot of lives moving quickly. Rip to those workers that lost their lifes

In San Fransisco under the Golden Gate, there is a huge pilot boat that has about 30 pilots on standby for different days that pilot ALL ships under bridge. No one from outside the U.S. may bring a ship into the SF Bay without one of these pilots on board.

Shouldn’t have happened! Where were the pilots and tugs? Especially since a pilot is needed to bring the ship in to port with the assistance of the tugs and on top of that the ship was in distress and under now power! Something smells fishy here!!
I did my research and they don’t need tug boats to be present all the way to the bridge they only need to be needed for a certain amount of time not the entire time
when this iconic bridge was first built ....it should have had what are known as "fenders" around each pillar or anchor point.....blame engineers as well
A very suspicious accident. Someone sabotage the ship’s power supply to make it look like an accident. The crew made efforts to make the ship stir right into the bridge support. Dropping the port anchor and reversing the ship’s engine made the ship head directly towards bridge support. Why they did it is unclear?
@@otacon72 Boats take a long time to respond to your steering input, it is delayed. When you drive a car it is immediate but a boat won't start turning immediately when you turn the wheel. The boat was turning to line up for straight under the bridge when they lost power, but the turn continued since they could not move the rudder when the power was off. When the power turns back on you can see the boat straightening out and finally it started turning away in the last moments but it was too late. I'm assuming the captain also attempted to reverse the prop direction and they also dropped their anchors, but the ship was too massive to stop or manuever in time. They lost power at the absolute worst possible time and it sent them on a trajectory they couldn't stop
@@eliteglitchcrewHQ the other theory is that it stopped the boat and so they wanted to stop the boat instead of bringing an entire bridge out of harbor
I would not be surprised to learn that this was an act of terroristic sabotage by a rogue crew member onboard the ship detonating a bomb or grenade in the engine room to cause this horrific event. Well I do t see how it could, a bomb would’ve rocked the ship and you clearly don’t know how little damage a grenade would do to a multi hundred ton ship and the engines of that ship are huge hundreds of tons so a grenade wouldn’t do anything , and why would they not do it in the morning during the commute and why would they send a mayday call none of that makes sense for it to be a terrorist attack
