A container ship smashed into the four-lane Francis Scott Key Bridge in the US port of Baltimore on March 26, causing it to collapse. READ MORE: str.sg/nNqZ
The ship “lost propulsion” as it was leaving port, and the crew on board notified Maryland officials that it had lost control of the vessel, ABC News reported, citing an unclassified US intelligence report.

Is there other Briges or People is lockdown there
Need one belt one road to help rebuild the bridge?
@@uldispaze7325 There are other bridges over the Patapsco River and nobody's trapped on one side or the other. This is a major transport artery for the Baltimore metro area however and it's going to take years to rebuild. It's also going to close a major container port and vehicle port for weeks or months while the wreckage is cleared. Something like half the foreign cars sold in the eastern U.S. come in through Fairfield.
I think I'm more concerned for the poor families.
@@uldispaze7325what?
One container ship did more damage to Baltimore harbor than the British navy could inflict with a massive artillery barrage in 1814. HORRIBLE.
I guess after burning Washington to the ground Baltimore didn't seam worth it.
Yes but the Brits had a good go at Washington!!
Had Baltimore been as large and densely spaced as it is now, the Royal Navy would’ve done far more damage.
It’s easy to miss a lot of small wooden buildings spaced out from a large distance.
Singapore have a lot to answer for.

@@jjk2one good question. Imagine this incident happened in the rush hour!.
😆If this is China ship , it will be report as national security threat.
R.I.P to those who lost their lives. Very sad.
I think this will teach the port to use tugs all the way out of the harbor. Just in case they lose power....
Here in Corpus Christi, tugs 95% of the time accompany vessels and don't tie off until they are beyond our bridge when leaving. Our bridge supports are not even in the water and tugs still accompany ships in case of emergency.
They should add collision structures around the pillars first and foremost. On photos before the collapse, its clear there was little to nothing like that in place.
@@Ganiscol If you look at the relative size (and loaded mass) of the container ship vs the bridge supports, any "collision protection" structures would have to both be VERY robust (ideally rock filled or concrete) to a width of more than 20 yards, AND go out at least 60 yards away from the bridge supports on each side. I don't think that's practical. Better to simply ban super-massive ships like that from going past the bridge completely.
I read somewhere that the total distance is around 200 miles. Don't know if that's correct. However, using tugs until past the bridge seems sensible.
We have them on the Skyway bridge here in Tampa They say a ship cannot go through them I believe it They are huge@@davidbarry6900
RIP insurance company who insured this ship.
lolzz
The ship appears stronger than the bridge
😂😂😂
Insurance company can always find a way to escape their responsibility.
Insurance companies are themselves also insured since they also want to pool excessive risk
There needs to be a way that the Coast Guard can immediately notify the bridge authority to activate STOP IMMEDIATELY automated red signs on the bridge approach for traffic.
The ship let out a mayday before hitting the bridge All traffic was stopped the only ones on the bridge were construction workers. That's why there are only 6 missing. Could have been a repeat like in Tampa the The Skyway Bridge
And thank god it was 130 AM Can you imagine at 8 AM@@iceman997799
I can't believe that a bridge in an area where these ship's pass through on a regular basis, don't have more protection around the piers. Unbelievable .
It will have to be 10times heavier/bigger to be "protected" and at that weight, the ship wouldn't have to hit it, the beidge will buckle under its own weight or it will have so many pillars that it will essentially block this route
Horrific. Prayers for the families.

Excellent footage of such a horrifying, catastrophic event.
flimsy bridge, there not any stone barrier between the bridge support structure and the ship. they expect zero accident forever?
The port is under pressure to conduct as many operations as possible, the tugs would have been released ASAP because the tug operators don't like paying overtime and the tugs must rendezvous with the next vessel, the ships' captain onboard the container ship is under pressure to sail because of the charter party, American captains are not trained to a high level. Emergency power must automatically return within 11 seconds, but did they have a blackout or a brownout? Bow thrusters (Tunnel) would not be effective at this speed due to the Coanda effect and that's if they had power. Once the power returns, the switchboard must be reset, this can be frustrating due to speed not being synchronized between switchboards. At least he let go his anchor, one should never go aground or have a collision without dropping the anchor.
Apparently there was no oil pollution. I have seen box boats hit structures at the flares that opens big holes that empty fuel oil upper tanks. Bulkheds did well but the bridge that prove to be a masterpiece of enginering was no designed for takeaway that...By the way...is reefer containers season in Baltimore? How many were loaded and did they stress the main generators to trip point?
The MV Dali had a massive power failure and drifted right into the bridge pylon. She went completely dark, then there were large amount so black smoke billowing from the port funnel of the vessel indicating a catastrophic engine problem. The port side anchor had been dropped but failed to stop the ship.
Quick thinking of the bridge workers stopped traffic and saved many lives.
A ship built by friendly Koreans and manned by friendly Indian crew, can so do such "not so friendly act".

I still dont understand how the whole bridge fell.
Laws of Physics it seems.
SAME.
Well, if you understand basic physics laws and the way cantilevered trusses work and are put together, it makes perfect sense. One section can’t support itself in balance/counterbalance with the section next to it suddenly missing. Like a row of dominoes.
@@anb7408 Agreed. If you watch the videos of the crash, as the section directly above the ship fell, the section at the other end of the bridge rose momentarily until (without the section by the boat balancing it) the whole thing pivoted on the far support, and rotated down.
How can you see this video of the wreckage and not understand how that ship took down the bridge? That ship is huge and heavy and had massive force when it hit the bridge. The bridge didn’t have a chance.
How unfortunate. Could have avoided if they had tugs followed them out of port or anti-ship pillers of some sort to protect the bridge supports. It's going to take them years to rebuild that bridge.
condolences to the those that perished.
Why doesn't the bridge have a stone base on the main columns?
Because it looks like a temporary bridge that was never replaced by the real one...
That is both possible and very expensive, but peanuts to what this mess will cost the city. The design decision is usually based on cost and in compliance with relevant building regulations, which in this case seem woefully insufficient. Bet the next bridge will have them though.
Jesus, people can't see the forest for the trees. Did you miss the ship that lost power?

This base would need to be wide enough to stop the ship by being hit by the lower bow before the protruding upper bow hits the bridge.
I just pray that nobody was hurt !!
On the boat ?.
All the containers gonna stuck in that ship for weeks if not months. RIP to those whom their orders and deliveries are in the ship.
Alarmingly fragile bridges built in the US.
Alarmingly inept foreign ship captains and chief engineers. Sturdy ship builders however.
It's crazy how people just say stupid things and totally out themselves as the idiots they are, without even a doubt in their mind they're right, when there is a mountain of basic common sense physics reasons why a ship like that would take out damn near every bridge on this planet.
Those ships weigh an AVERAGE of 100,000 Tons.

No, bridges should have collision protection for their support pylons.
@@TheRocco96It did have basic collision protection - just not for these jumbo behemoths....
This container ship prolly weighed upwards of 200000 tonnes dont matter what protection you use if that thing is going in its going in
@@TheRocco96 Unbelievable that they didn't have any kind of pilings built protecting the pylons especially that the whole thing could be brought down so easily.

Hope those people in the vehicles on the bridge are rescued and are safe if any. However, this shows how fragile the bridge is built. Poorly built. It is like Titanic hitting the tip of an iceberg and the whole ship sinks. In this case, the whole bridge....

What do you want to hear? drone buzz or helicopter noises wouldn't add anything to the video.
The Fed’s and DOT’s design bridges to support bridge and road traffic with a 2 to 3 safety ratio. Steel bridges are built to statically support compressive load bearing weight on these piers and abutments. They are not designed to forcefully withstand being struck by a 100,000 ton near 1000’ foot container ship that exiting the bay lost power and coasting struck the Key Bridge head on at a tall steel abutment. The Key Bridge collapsed like a deck of cards.
This bridge was built and erected back in the 1970’s when container ships were half the size of today’s Panamax ginormous container ships. This Dali ginormous container ship was built in South Korea in 2015 to transit the 2nd wider and deeper parallel Panama Canal built and completed in 2016.
All the world’s ship ports infrastructure must be rebuilt to accommodate these ginormous container ships. It will cost millions to clean up this tragic mess at Key Bridge but will cost billions to Build Back Better our port facilities to accommodate these behemoths of the commercial container ships plying our oceans.
yet it a cute smol ship compare to the ones that navigate Asia... oh how the mighty america has fallen...
Wonder when people are going to realize this is basically a repeat of the Sunshine Skyway incident
All they have to do is clear the debris from the central section to open the port again. That port could be back to normal operation within 2 weeks. Not so the bridge. The new bridge will take a year or so to complete.
looks like it's made of Ikea furniture
But it is not.
A kullen
Absolutely disastrous. 😢
The vessel had been chartered by Maersk since its delivery in early 2015. The 22 members of the ship's crew on board were Indian nationals, and the ship was being piloted by two local maritime pilots.
The main shipping channel under the bridge was estimated to be 50 feet (15 m) deep, while National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) charts show the depth at the bridge supports to be approximately 30 feet (9.1 m) deep. NOAA reported a water temperature of 47 °F (8 °C) at the time of the collapse.
Videos suggest a power failure but Bank effect due poor under keel clearence makes the rudder useless. She will run aground....
We saw cars and trucks on the bridge when it collapsed, why refute the obvious. Yes, people have died. Pray
There were apparently some workers on the bridge, and one of them appears to have survived. So far, just one. Those in vehicles likely died on impact after falling 165 feet.
The only ones on the bridge when it fell were 8 people. construction workers 2 did make it 6 missing.

When we lose propulsion on ships of this size, does the rudder become uncontrollable?
Even with rubber control, this ship was going with the current (I believe) so there would be little chance of avoiding that bridge, and zero chance of changing course away from the bridge all together.
Not necesarily. It depends of the speed through the water and the under keel clearence she has...the rudder may move but another thing is that She respond...
assume all the containers were empty as it was heading out of the US.
They would never travel with empties. Maybe a few but not a whole vessel.
I noticed the containers on the ship blocked the view from the ship's bridge? This is so sad.

Why does the power line look more protected than the bridge?

Nowaday, bridges is not made to withstand an accident like such.
Loss of life. Loss of cargo. Loss of Bridge. Ships in port cannot leave. Ships outside cannot get in to unload. A "simple" disaster with EPIC consequence to Baltimore's economy, numerous shipping businesses, and inestimable damage to consumers expecting delivery of the contents of 10s of thousands of containers-unable to dock and unload for the months, even years it may take to restore this bridge and this port. EPIC LOSS!
Like when a ship blocked the Suez...
Second collision for this ship
The cargo ship "Dali" collided with a pillar of the Francis Scott Key Bridge in Baltimore, causing it to collapse into the river. All 22 crew members onboard are Indian, according to the ship's management company, Synergy Marine Group. The vessel, owned by Grace Ocean Private Ltd and bound from Baltimore to Colombo, had a capacity of 10,000 TEU and was carrying 4,679 TEU.
Only half capacity? Unless cargo holds were empty She looks fat to me...
Peculiar 2 major cargo ships would take out ports in both the US and Turkey within a week. With so much computer guidance and controlled systems on these ships now...are we seeing the beginning of hijacking ships remotely as acts of economic warfare? is this this the counter attack for Red Sea presence by US? I mean...Iran isn't going to jump up and down and proclaim success , if this is the case...We really ought to look out for more cargo ships losing control soon.
Sometimes there just happens to be an "unexpected" problem to justify selling a solution to the malleable public.

The ship lost power. They dropped the anchor and tried to reverse thrust, but it turned the ship into the pillar instead of away from it. Had they just let it coast and used the rudder to steer, it would have missed the bridge.
Pure speculation.
Don't forget that once you loose propulsion power without the thrust of the propeller past the rudder the rudder looses most of its steering ability and momentum (for awhile) then the currents have command.
Great armchair captaining there that makes a lot of assumptions, not the least of which is they had rudder control.
Ships firmware was compromised in a zero day exploit. This is going to happen a lot more folks

ИГИЛ взяли ответственность за это?
Even if the engine stopped why couldn't they steer it under the bridge ?
A complete power loss, and that is what it looked like, affects the hydraulics for steering as well. And even if they somehow had control over the rudder through a backup, without propulsion an already sluggish to steer ship will not response quick to rudder input. The rudder works by directing the flow of water, if that flow is so low because the ship is just moving by inertia, it may not be enough to avoid the collision. This is also why its not always advisable to go in full reverse to avoid an collision but instead give it some beans and steer clear - rudder is always most effective at a certain propeller rpm.
No power no steering.
Steering System as part of the navigational system must be back up by the emergency generator. Thing is that this brief power failures may cause conflict in the ATS and those peak voltages maybe cause malfuntion in the hydrolic pumps. She went hard to starboard with indicate both: right hand screw or that maybe she was under bank effect that even she regained the rudder control, it will be useless...Sad this to happen in a point not suppose to be dangerous as the FS Key bridge compare to other bridges in the World. Human live were lost but no oil pollution at least...
