I was about 17 years old when I was gifted a Schotts motorcycle jacket. It’s still a functioning riding jacket to this day. (Not for me because of jacket shrinkage or operator expansion). I’m 58 years old now. So yes, if the jacket is still being made with the same horse hide and technics it’s worth the investment. Not many things last decades of fun, abuse and debauchery.
Schott has lost a bit in quality altough it’s still a great jacket and will last a lifetime for most people. However, for the price of a Schott horsehide you can get an Aero or a Simmons Bilt which are just on a whole different level than the modern Schott, both in construction and materials. I know many people prefer Aero, but Simmons Bilt takes the price for me because they have so much more interesting leathers. My SB jacket is my baby and will be passed down to my son a lifetime from today.

I bought a leather jacket in the style of a classic perfecto for 110€ back in 2013. I've worn it very often and continue to do so. It still looks great and even comes with two interior pockets instead of just one. Buying a cheaper leather jacket is absolutely viable in my experience. Just make sure it's real leather.
I would say that this is the best option since it will not look as good when you are in your 40's , unlike when you are 25. 100-200€ doesn't buy the best quality leather jacket but it will be enough to cover 15-20 years of use.

I've never liked the look of these jackets. Although I openly admit that they are practical for motorcyclists in a number of ways, it is hard for a man to sale "the look". Schott DID NOT make the jacket worn by Marlon Brando in The Wild One. It was a jacket made by a company called Durable. You can search about it if you Google "Durable One Star Leather Jacket"!
A quick statement as to the how and why’s motorcycle jackets were designed and how one is supposed to fit. As to fit I would return that jacket because it fit none of those who did wear it. Frist off let’s discuss the epaulettes, remember this jacket was purpose designed not as a fashion item but as a tool. Epaulettes are there to be used for the same purpose the military used them for. Some place to hold your gloves and the snap were to secure things hung over the shoulder. Sleeve length is supposed to be with your arms at rest at your side, cuff end should fall across the middle of the hand. This is how to properly judge jacket gussets should open when you point your arms straight out, there should be no pulling seen on them or the back of the jacket at all. Sleeves were designed to fit properly when your holding standard Indian or Harley buckhorn handlebars. That is why a properly fitted jacket when not riding looks like the sleeves are to long and the back looks to large, tool not fashion fit. So buy your coat considering the type of bars you plan on riding with. Remember this is not a fashion item it was designed as a tool. Leather or Horsehide was used for motorcycle jackets because it slides and doesn’t grab surfaces. That’s why racing riders wear leather suits which are made by Vanson the other high quality motorcycle leather company. Which in my humble opinion is the best American motorcycle leather company. The color black preferred by riders is supposedly due to it not showing road dirt ,oil, and it absorbs heat according to our folklore. As for that waist of the coat being tight, that’s not an issue it’s a design feature’s. Remember we live in a world of 55mph windchills, ever get a cold wind up the waist of your jacket at night. So if you haven’t realized that’s the purpose of zippered cuffs, wind control and cooling. Now if your considering one of these jackets consider this, road rash is unpleasant but scrubbing the blue stones out because you bought a fashion forward jacket instead of spending your money on real protection. Well either two things occur you will stop riding or you will never ride in shorts, sneakers, and a t-shirt and will buy a proper tool dressed accordingly. On the subject of t-shirts size your jacket for cold weather tolerance, if you can’t ride in a t-shirt in the fall but need thermals and a sweatshirt buy your coat with that on. Or do what those of us who prefer two wheels buy a Summer fitted jacket and a Winter fitted one. Yeah, it’s expensive but after fifty years of riding you sort of develop an expansive body and shrinking coats. Remember unfortunately the truth is if you ride long enough. There are two types of motorcycle riders those that have had an accident and those waiting to have an accident. Ride safe and for the sake of your hide wear something else’s hide over yours!
it's a great looking jacket, but for motorcycle riding I prefer a modern design with pockets for armor. It's not about the look, but the functionality.
i enjoyed the history so much .. thanks, Kyle ! i'd like to mention Gail Hawkins, who sadly passed away. She is the guru of Schott jackets and ran the customer service / blog section of the website where everyone went to ask questions in search of their perfect jacket.
Excellent video. I like all the points you made. To me, Schott has been a useful "fashion" jacket, I personally own several of them. I must point out, the James Dean image in the video. He was wearing an LAPD cross zip horsehide jacket made by Cal. Leathers. Very different jackets from a quality point of view. In the same token, James Dean was photographed wearing a "Perfecto" label jacket type. However, some people believe it was made by an independent jacket maker for Indian motorcycles showroom retailers. Please keep on making your very informative videos. How about those CR jackets. There is a very nice history behind them as well!
I no longer ride a motorcycle and do wear several short length leather jackets. I really thought that this was an excellent video that covered points that I should consider purchasing another motorcycle style jacket. Good job!
Would you recommend the regular version or the longer version of this jacket for someone that rides a motorcycle? By longer I mean that it drops down lower to your waist.
In contrast to the Doc Martens boot, which was long called THE BOOT, but is now produced carelessly in China, the Perfecto is still THE LEATHER JACKET. A purchase for life.
Thanks for the history lesson. I’ve watched a ton of vids on motorcycle history, but I haven’t so much for gear history, so I actually learned somethin’ cool. That said, as a daily rider, style tends to go out the window unless it’s a perfect day. I wear a mesh coat in the summer and a heavy, textile coat in the winter (Merlin). Problem with leather is it generally doesn’t breathe very well and you wouldn’t think leather leaks, but.. yeah. I know guys who can destroy a leather coat in a couple of riding seasons (of what brand/quality, I couldn’t tell you). I usually replace my textile coat every five years. That said, I can’t claim style. I look like your dorky-looking, 40-something dad in the lame Aerostitch suit unless I planned to be somewhere nice (in which case style can overcome substance, but when it rains constantly and you’re on two wheels, you gotta just take the good with the bad.
Back in the day I worked in a shoe repair shop part time and found out I could get a Schott jacket wholesale so I did, after I got mine every body else in the shop got one too.
I have 2 Langlitz standard Columbia jackets, one I bought used off the rack in Portland and the other was made to measure at that same shop years later. I cut the arms off the first one it's a sweet one of a kind vest now. Love that shop and their leather work.
Unless you've been living under a rock, people pull them off just fine. I've seen smartly dressed people use this as a blazer and it looks sweet, I've seen people wear a hoodie and Joggers and still look sharp..... there are various ways to wear this jacket.
“A perfecto will radiate a youthful and rebellious presence” I’m sorry, but if I see an old guy wearing a perfecto I think the exact opposite of youthful
To be fair you can message Schott's customer service to ask for leather details. They basically tell you everything from the weight to other specs of the leather.
When they put some armor pockets in it, then it'll be "Perfecto". It looks good but I'm not paying $800 for something that offers me no protection on the ride.
It does protect you though, it literally originated for motorcyclists. This is what they wore before our modern, plastic armour. All you had was padding and tough leather. I understand though, you can get a Dainese or Alpinstars at that price, which comes with armour. I know because I have one.
@@insertnamehere001 I'm aware of it's original purpose. But it only protects you from slides, not impacts. Most decent leather jackets can accomplish that. That's not good enough for me. This jacket won't do me any good when someone hits me from behind at a light because they weren't paying attention. This jacket was fine decades back when armor had yet to be fitted but I don't consider it to be acceptable protection today.
Strong agree. This no longer fits the description of an actual motorcycle jacket. It was fine 50+ years ago, when most bikes would maybe do 60-70 mph downhill on a good day and had drum brakes. It is not fine today, when even a lot of standard middleweight bikes are pushing 100+ hp. And without reinforcements for the elbows and shoulders, it won't protect you very well in case of a moderate-to-high-speed slide either. It's just a fashion item now.
Perfecto is a really nice jacket. It's well crafted from high quality materials and will last a lifetime. That's said, I find it true of all Schott leather articles crafted here in the USA. I live in the north and have enjoyed the Casual Pebbled Weekend Jacket for nearly twenty years. It's generously cut for layering and has deep inner pockets for longer wallets, eyeglass carriers or CCW. I'm also very keen on the standard lapels as they tend to match more standard men's apparel.
You can’t go wrong with a Schott. I prefer the 141 Cafe Racer which has a “euro” sophisticated look. Have had one for 25 years which 98% was on one of the bikes I have owned over that time. It’s just getting broken in, and I need a new one as I don’t lift the heavy weights like I used to and went down from a 46 to 44. Get tHe 141! Peter Fonda wore a version in EasyRider with Dennis Hopper.
This is something that has to do with safety, not fashion. I'd never recommend anything other than CE rated riding gear, head to toe literally. ATGATT, Look up this abbreviation.
I got one about 25 years ago and it still looks brand new. But I see it as a fashion item and absolutely not a technical piece of protective motorcycle gear.
Kyle, even though the jacket was a little snug, it still looked great on you. Perfectos look much better with the fitted look rather than the roomier fit which those other guys in the video wore. Btw, with all respect, they do *not* suit a jacket as cool as a Perfecto! 😂 You, on the other hand, look boss in one!
I'm confused here. You show a $995 Schott jacket, saying the quality is "good, but not exceptional," and that you can find "better-made moto jackets at this price point," but then show a $1650 Belstaff jacket as the comparison? $995 and $1650 are not the same price point. So what ~$1000 leather jacket is better?
I have the 118 because I need the long size. It fits me perfectly, with room enough for a thermal or a sweater for the cold days. I ride a vintage Harley, so the look is essential! I find the quality almost as good as Langlitz, but in ordering a Langlitz jacket you’re looking at a 10-month wait time. I think the Schott is fine; it’s designed to protect your hide while you’re skidding along the pavement after a spill, and the leather is heavy enough that it’s clearly not just a fashion statement.
At 2:16 you show a jacket that is NOT a shott jacket. It is an Indian Ranger. If you look at Aero leathers they make an exact replica of the Indian Ranger. It is easily the best motorcycle jacket of they era.
I doubt that they do. This isn't reallt a viable riding jacket anymore, other than plodding around town on your Harley. No armor pockets, no reinforcements for elbows and shoulders makes for less than satisfactory protection in a slide, not to even mention what it would (or rather, wouldn't) do to protect you in a high side!
I have two Schott jackets, both made in USA. A distressed perfecto ( how incredible distressed from factory like a years o used one ) and a Cafe Racer. Both are the best jacket of my collection and if you look at 2000/3000/5000e italian or french designers leather jackets ( made in China ) all are poor jackets if you put a made in USA Schott besides them. Those Schott are the best leather jacket you can find and the price is cheaper if you know what you are buying.
Only 2 of you looked good in a perfecto. The older you get and if youth aesthetically leaves you a Perfecto looks weird. No hate just my honest opinion. Me personally I don't care for the perfecto, but watched the video because I am subscribed and also own couple of different Schott jackets.
The design of this jacket is a trim fit. This jacket sometimes is not very practical if you like to layer. I have layered this jacket wearing a nice "properly"fit white dress shirt. On colder days, a wool thinner vest works well also.
I have many leather and horsehide jackets including A.M.I Aero Belstaff Cooper Dainese Schott Taylors but my favourite is a no name old double rider that fits perfect a little bit longer than most at a 28" drop at the back on a 42" chest and has zips on top of the sleeves ( which I find important as I have been down the road a few times after parting ways with my bike ) I have a Perfecto or two but one a 602 and the other older type with the fixed mouton collar and double hand warmer and flap lower pockets. As far as I'm concerned a jacket should be of good quality but most of all fit you perfectly No compromise for fit.
Great video, as usual.. but the jacket doesn’t float my motorcycle. I have a Pistol Pete jacket, which I enjoy wearing. I ride various motorcycles. My jacket looks and feels like a quality garment. I bought it through eBay, from America 🇺🇸 but it was made in Pakistani. The jacket is proving itself every year to be reliable, comfy and iconic Ok, for an Englishman, from northern England. The best bike it suits is my Victory Hammer, there is a nice video of my bike on UA-cam “Victory Hammer idling “ which was taken the week before I bought it. It also looks great on BMW touring bikes. You have to consider the riding position. On American bikes, you ride leaning back, with arms outstretched, so the sleeves need to be right. Whereas the sit up and eg BMW CL is perfect for this type of jacket too. Then you can ride a retro motorcycle, such as a Beautiful Honda super dream. This is an ‘80’s icon. When they came out, the styling was totally’80’s and once again, the pistol Pete jacket fits right in.

Heard that this jacket was styled after the German panzer uniform of ww2. They do look similar. Personally I prefer the U.S A2 flying jacket. It's less clichéd. I do ride a motorcycle though.
One thing tht stands out is that the jackets worn by Marlon Brando and James Dean both have large lapels. The Schott 618 I think have smaller ones. As a Schott 618 owner ive noticed that.
There’s a guy from my hometown who will measure you up and make you a custom leather jacket for 350 bucks. People come from all over to get his jackets. Penn Leather.
It is fashionable but I won’t wear one because it would mean I’m a poser. I don’t ride motorcycles. Leave the perfecto for the bikers. I use to watch motorcycle gear reviews and this review is sad because it isn’t a motorcycle jacket but a fashion channel. ROFL
It's an investment at best. But it really comes down to its longevity. Whether you pick the double rider or cafe racer, you can't go wrong with Schott. When it's properly cared for, it'll last forever and it will tell your story. It's not gonna be cheap. But it's one thing you will carry for life and that alone makes it worth it.
Preston should have modeled this video, as perfecto is not a style for the sightly overweight. Also never with pleats please. If you have a little belly at least buy a model without the belt. And of course it is so legendary that perfecto is now a generic trademark like wayfarer, but in this case, lots of designer does perfecto better than schottt. And most skip the belt. If you are really fit V shaped go for the belt. Mint black ones can look a little off as this style is most often associated jackets scuffed by bike falls (like boots). You can also get them already distressed and even studded.
Johnny's jacket has pointed epaulet straps. The "v" in the lapels is wide where his name is. The zippers on the sleeves are on the top of the wrist. The expansion back only goes down to the armpit, not further down.
The Perfecto jackets fit looks better on you than the other gentlemen in this video. It’s supposed to fit as it appears on you. Tight, short and generally worn unzipped.
While not a double rider I have two Perfecto CAF1 in horsehide and I’d say they’re definitely worth it. I dnt ride and use them casually I feel the cafe racer style lends itself to be used more casually than the double riders

You realise epaulettes are for rank insignia right?
it's a great looking jacket, but for motorcycle riding I prefer a modern design with pockets for armor.
In London we just called them DMs. I must agree that they are really badly made now.
@@fuckbankers Yes, but now you can still buy Solovair shoes.
@@serge_oehn good to know.
Didn’t watch the whole video yet, but yes, definitely worth it. By far my favorite looking motorcycle leather jacket.
Back in the day I worked in a shoe repair shop part time and found out I could get a Schott jacket wholesale so I did, after I got mine every body else in the shop got one too.
Langlitz Leathers !!!! HillsideUSA Front quarter horsehide !!
I have 2 Langlitz standard Columbia jackets, one I bought used off the rack in Portland and the other was made to measure at that same shop years later. I cut the arms off the first one it's a sweet one of a kind vest now. Love that shop and their leather work.
@@grimeyhonkyracing3938 👍👍
If you not a biker, or rocker you probably can't pull this look off. You kinda need to have a tough look. Slacks and loafer won't cut it.
Yeah sure pal
@@umberto7773 Ok, get one and run around looking like a fool. Idk b.
Unless you've been living under a rock, people pull them off just fine.
I've seen smartly dressed people use this as a blazer and it looks sweet, I've seen people wear a hoodie and Joggers and still look sharp..... there are various ways to wear this jacket.
@@quietatse Ya no.
Oh man, I've lusted after a Schott Perfecto for thirty years.
“A perfecto will radiate a youthful and rebellious presence”
I’m sorry, but if I see an old guy wearing a perfecto I think the exact opposite of youthful
To be fair you can message Schott's customer service to ask for leather details. They basically tell you everything from the weight to other specs of the leather.
wearing a biker jacket with pleated trouser is like eating sushi with ketchup
1:01 you forgot the MOST iconic representation…The Ramones!!
Nobody looked as good as Marlon Brando in this jacket. To be honest most guys look like dorky wannabes lol
I highly doubt that any serious motorcycle gear store has this jacket in stock:)
Lewis leathers are better jackets
Cool factor dropped 120% since it appeared in that pathetic facebook Meta video, commisioned by the Zuck.
i don't think it should be worn with pleated khakis. LOL. :)
Love the history lesson, thanks. And love the jacket.
Try the Aero Highwayman jacket.
Yes, the 141 is awesome, I've had 2 of them. I also have the Perfecto 125 which is no longer made. Extremely nice jackets.
Show all models in some Levi’s jeans and zipped up leather biker greaser jackets showing full front and backsides of each model ☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️
This is something that has to do with safety, not fashion. I'd never recommend anything other than CE rated riding gear, head to toe literally.
ATGATT, Look up this abbreviation.

@petrolhead: 🦑✅
I got one about 25 years ago and it still looks brand new. But I see it as a fashion item and absolutely not a technical piece of protective motorcycle gear.
Got mine really cheap. Around 200$. It wasn't even worn once by the seller, basicaly fabric new. Absolutely love it.
Brando did not wear Schott!! He wore a jacket made by Durable, everything else is urban myth.
Fashion item. No CE Armour. Give me a Helston any day for a bike ride.
If it doesn't have armor plating, it should not be called a motorcycle jacket. Otherwise, it's just a leather jacket.
Langlitz might make a better jacket
I love Langlitz I have 2 Columbia models
Keep them coming I love these “Is it worth it” videos, well researched 👍
We can’t leave out Negan from the Walking Dead
That ain't a perfecto, it's custom design
It is easily the best motorcycle jacket of they era.
do yall ride at all? if so I think it would be interesting to see some motorcycle content in regards to style and riding.
@@Domitianvs true, I have a first mfg jacket thats a copy of the perfecto but has all the modern features.
Wow, some of the most uncool people ever modeling this iconic jacket! 😂😂😂🤡🤡🤡
“The waist is too small” hmmmmmm lol
It goes to show how far America went down hill with our money, now imagine how bad everything else went down hill
Have yall done a video on bolo ties and how to style them?
Only 2 of you looked good in a perfecto. The older you get and if youth aesthetically leaves you a Perfecto looks weird. No hate just my honest opinion. Me personally I don't care for the perfecto, but watched the video because I am subscribed and also own couple of different Schott jackets.
The design of this jacket is a trim fit. This jacket sometimes is not very practical if you like to layer. I have layered this jacket wearing a nice "properly"fit white dress shirt. On colder days, a wool thinner vest works well also.
What size perfecto are you wearing in the video?
Biker group : The Jaded Gentlemen MC
About time! Yes forever classic I love this jacket!
The jacket is proving itself every year to be reliable, comfy and iconic
Ok, for an Englishman, from northern England.
Have never EVER seen anyone actually ZIP and use the BELT on a motorcycle jacket… interesting
I make these type jackets in Pakistan and I want to do business if I make these type jackets in Pakistan coust is very low I sale 300 Us dollars genion leader jackets
The fact they are using polyester in these is frankly pathetic.
I know some companies who use polyester lining and still charge you anywhere from 1000$ to 2500$
I bought 2 vintage Wilson biker leather jacket, it's more affordable with same build quality as Schott
Heard that this jacket was styled after the German panzer uniform of ww2. They do look similar. Personally I prefer the U.S A2 flying jacket. It's less clichéd. I do ride a motorcycle though.
This jacket was designed in the 1920s. WW2 hadn't happened yet.
One thing tht stands out is that the jackets worn by Marlon Brando and James Dean both have large lapels. The Schott 618 I think have smaller ones.
As a Schott 618 owner ive noticed that.
I just picked one up at a auction for $50, in perfecto condition
There’s a guy from my hometown who will measure you up and make you a custom leather jacket for 350 bucks. People come from all over to get his jackets. Penn Leather.
I still have and wear my James Dean horsehide jacket. Lost the fur collar a long time ago but still have the belt.
It is fashionable but I won’t wear one because it would mean I’m a poser. I don’t ride motorcycles. Leave the perfecto for the bikers. I use to watch motorcycle gear reviews and this review is sad because it isn’t a motorcycle jacket but a fashion channel. ROFL
Very expensive.... What do you think about the Harley-Davidson version is that respectable?
Marlon Brando wore a Durable, not a Schott Perfecto.
I like this channel but man do y'all hire specifically for lifeless robots? Some personality in your commentators would be lovely. Always so flat.
Gentleman's Gazette motorcycle glove should be called "The Tarmac Surfer".
The sleeves are- depending on the model- relatively short. If you are a tall guy, this may be a problem.
I got mine at a flea market for 10 dollars
I think you need a certain type of personality to wear that.
Raphael looks bad in that Perfecto, especially paired with his pleated front pants.
Hi great video as always also can you please make a video on spier and mackay
This video is the Best review on Motorcycle Jacket that I have ever seen. Great job, Kyle!
So the 613 is the original motorcycle jacket?
☹️☹️☹️☹️☹️
The lapels of the perfecto look much smaller than the ones on the jacket worn by Brando
Guys say that Brando's jacket was a Durable One Star 33.
While not a double rider I have two Perfecto CAF1 in horsehide and I’d say they’re definitely worth it. I dnt ride and use them casually I feel the cafe racer style lends itself to be used more casually than the double riders
I like RRL version of the Perfecto. A bit more stylish
