Here here i agree the 1970s was such a cool year we had starsky & hutch the bee gees music n rose Royce the Raleigh chopper and just a beautiful time to be in ☺️😍👌
I think it is especially meaningful since the song is a reflection of the band themselves. My understanding is that Marcel was definitely a sad sweet dreamer. Maybe not about a girl but about his career at least
Please keep Marcel and his brothers memory alive by listening and posting this superb song as much as possible - Marcel genuinely was a really lovely guy. Kind warm and respectful - a true gentleman. I miss him - always have a place in my heart for him. Please do the same. Thank you xxx
The lead singer was from the island of St. Kitts, West Indies. The group was founded in Manchester, England. I was in my first year of songwriting in 1974 when I first heard this group, Sweet Sensation. I thought the group was an American singing group out of Philadelphia produced by Gamble & Huff...five years before I landed in the U.S. and got my first song called Get Into The Love Groove published in Billboard magazine June 4, 1983 on page 64. This group and the song truly inspired me
Beautiful and moving song - takes me back to my youth. Marcel had such a rich, innocent voice. Thanks for the memories. Much respect to band members past and present.
The group is sweet sensation. The lead singer is Marcel King, from Moss side. He was well known to me, (used to sing on the bus back from Manchester). Sadly he is no longer with us but, I will always remember him.
A sad farewell to Marcel King and Leroy Smith. I remember reading about Leroy's passing, alone in his flat above a restaurant. Nobody should die alone. Thanks for the music - for the wonderful memories.
You are right. Nobody should die alone. I was reminded just a few hours ago; apparently someone had died overnight in the parking lot next door (popular with homeless people because it has an overhang to keep the rain off them). It looked like he just went to sleep and never woke up. Very disturbing to see.
BEAUTIFUL, IVE LOVED THIS ALL MY LIFE, I WAS THERE WHEN THIS FIRST CAME OUT. RESPECT. LOVED BY A WHITE GUY AGED 54. MUSIC IS MUSIC, IT KNOWS NO BOUDARIES
I used to hang with Marcel (vocals) & I thought the world of him & he was so kind. & thoughtful toward me - a true gentle soul & a lovely lovely guy to spend time with. I miss him & tears run down my face as I type. Occasionally I (jokingly) used to start singing 'Sad Sweet Dreamer' in his company - & he'd say ' aww please don't sing that Rik'. Wasn't being horrid & only meant it as a laugh but I think it - in retrospect - it reminded him how terribly he was treated by the record company he & his brothers were signed to. They chewed him up & spat him out & I don't think he ever got over the trauma of it all. Only my opinion of coarse but - yeah I loved Marcel. May he rest in peace. That's my little story. Hope you enjoyed reading about it ? Peace y'all. Rxx. Added Feb 2020. I just watched him again in the video above and it made me cry - I’ll always remember his big toothy grin as he walked towards me (usually in the pub - we were two piss heads together after all) his smile said two things to me - firstly - a very warm welcome to my world’ and secondly - ‘Have you enough to front me a few pints ??’ Lol. How could I resist. 12 hours later either at his gaff or mine - speeding our heads off talking complete bollocks at each other - aaahh happy mems f’sho’ - God bless you Marcel - singing soul to God and his angels no doubt. I’m so moved by all these beautiful comments about Marcel. He would have been so happy about it. His credibility would have shot up and given him a new lease of life for sure if he was around still. Bless you Marcel. My friend I’m proud of you dude. Rx
I will never forget Marcel and how we met. You couldn't write this. It was the first day we moved into our new home. Mum, myself and siblings. We couldn't find anything. Mum asked me and my elder sister to knock the house next door for some coffee. As my elder sister held my hand, we knocked the door, it opened. There stood , Marcel! We froze, there stood Marcel infront of us, the guy who's song was currently number one in the charts. Our families became firm friends as they had lots of mutual friends. I can still remember, all the good times when many musicians came over to jam and our homes were flooded with sounds and love. A talented and beautiful soul.

1974 winners of TV Talent Show "New Faces" THE hottest Sat night show in mid 70s- long before X Factor. One of the very first successful UK homegrown soul groups. Lenny Hendry & Marti Caine were also winners. This was their 1st single and hit no1 in the UK. 1 more top 20 hit then... obscurity. Unfulfilled potential
It's upsets me a lot when I hear comments like oh I cannot believe this group came from Manchester!?!? They are clearly people who know nothing about Manchester in the 70s 80s and well before and after I can honestly say it's a city where we all grew up with a lot of soul and talented people in many forms.. @Paula Burke. Marcel was not a one-off. He had other songs, and appreciative fans from around the world are still listening to this classic today. Their suits were modeled on American R&B acts.
Great song written and arranged by David Parton & Tony Hatch. Hatch promoted them after they won New Faces, similar to the Simon Cowell scenario with X Factor I suppose. Difference being these guys had some talent, what an excellent sound and love the moves too. Brings back a lot of memories of being an innocent 13 year old. What a classic song.
Thanks for sharing some sweet British soul! Great song...great hair...great soul shuffle. Great all around. Wish this tune got more contemporary airplay.
Love this, it sure brings back many memories of Manchester in the 70`s. I used to go to school with Marcels younger brother, Phineas. He used to go round school persuading people to buy the record!! HaHa! Happy days.

Man! What a great song! I was a high school senior in '75. How could I not have heard or remember this tune? Anyway, thanks, vanquisamon! One of my new favorite songs, 36 years after it hit the charts!
Just shows how good the Brit Funk scene was back in the day....the BBC need to do a proper 3 part documentary on this slice of British music. Young folk need to know that we once had R&B, jazz funk bands as equal to anything from the USA in the late 70's and 80's. Long live OL, Sweet sensation, Linx, Central Line, Light of the World, Second Image, Imagination, Loose Ends...the list is endless.
Judging by the age he passed, I would think he was indeed 16 at the time this was a hit. Brings back such happy memories :) I understand Michael Jackson said it was a favourite song of his.
one of my ALL TIME favorites!! ..this soothing fabulous voice NEVER fails to put the hairs straight up up my back ..... this is music from the HEART !!
I was 17 and the singer in the resident band at Baileys Nightclub in Leicester when I met these guys.. They were fantastic, great guys and so professional. Insperational. All great personallities. The 70's will never die. Great memories.
In 1974 when this song came out, some of my frat brothers at the University of Colorado decided to go to Manhattan Kansas for a CU /K State basketball game. All the way we drove threw the state of Kansas the radio stations were playing this song constantly. This song really grew on us during the trip. In the end, the K State basketball team crushed us really badly. But every time I hear this song, it reminds me of a real fun time we had. .

My darling brother, only just turned 52 just before Christmas, gone as January came, we knew you were ill. We had limited time and we tried to make the most of it, i will always remember when we got tipsy and reminisced singing to this together, you in bed ill and me sitting next to you, both of us holding onto yesterday, the good songs that blessed our childhood and all we used to be. God i miss you my best friend, life is not the same without you and you are and never will be....love you always xxxx
Suzanne Andrews bless you! Me and my siblings did the same as you when my mum was dying, put all her old records on and clung on to those sweet, sweet memories Of yesteryear so as not to focus on the sad time waiting for us ahead xxxxx
What a pure talent gone to waste. I new his brother very well, we were all young kids who hung out together.. His brother was stylish, intelligent, and good looking also, and great company. I get home sick for those old days when we were all happy and carefree Ahhhhhhhhh Manchester days and great music. I know poor marcel king died a good few years later... It's breaks my heart how big he was he could of gone global forever. His family Must be so proud of him. May he rest in peace God bless him x
I so miss the early 1970s today such a beautiful era to be in cool music and great music like this sad sweet dreamer..... So wish a time machine could be invented id give anything to go back to the 70s 😢❤
Marcell looks like a young Don Cornelious. So sad to hear he died in his 30's. This song was played a lot on Toronto radio stations like CHUM in the mid 70's
Why does no-one seem able to write such beautiful, memorable, haunting melodies like this any more? Thank Heavens I grew up in the 60s and 70s when there was so much wonderful music! We just took it for granted, y'know! If anyone came up with a song this good today, I guess it would have to be banned! When will someone dare to point out that most of today's "artists" have next to no talent, and no-one will be listening to them in 5 years' time, let alone 40?
I will agree with you. I am especially sick of hearing about Taylor Swift. She is nowhere near this good and certainly not as much as she's hyped up to be.
I rembered this song. I was on the island of Nevis, West Indies, dreaming that I will be in America someday writing songs and have them published. I was in Nevis, West Indies in 1974, a teenager when I heard this group. I thought the group came out of The Sounds of Philadelphia Gamble & Huff. I found out 34 years later that the lead singer was born in St. Kitts, West Indies. The group was founded in Mancheser, England in 1974. I arrived in the U.S. in 1979 -got a top single pick song.
Imagine. Listening this song, 54 years ago. Emotion! 😢

Inolvidable canción!
Muy bella!
Que canción más bella, la música tan rica en sonidos y esas voces de ángeles, simplemente de lo mejor que he escuchado.

One of the first bands I saw back in the 70's and they knocked my socks off!!
Lovely 'old fashioned' soul music. Thanks for this.
Where did you see them?
@@barringtonjohnson6569 Central Hall in Chatham, Kent, England
bellísima ,melodías inolvidables , nunca se volverá a componer algo tan lindo !!!!
Formed in Manchester in 1973 the band came to prominence after appearing on the ITV talent show New Faces.
Brings back really good memories of the 1970's and of being very young!
I thought what an incredible voice Marlon had and listened to him as an 18 year old He is still an icon !
His name was Marcel not Marlon cretin
My darling brother, only just turned 52 just before Christmas, gone as January came, we knew you were ill. We had limited time and we tried to make the most of it, i will always remember when we got tipsy and reminisced singing to this together, you in bed ill and me sitting next to you, both of us holding onto yesterday, the good songs that blessed our childhood and all we used to be. God i miss you my best friend, life is not the same without you and you are and never will be....love you always xxxx
*and all you are
+Suzanne Andrews so sad for you Suzanne hope things get better for you.
+Suzanne Andrews GREAT BAND SAW THEM PLAY IN SHREWSBURY IN 1978..AT THE CASSCADE CLUB.....
xxx
Suzanne Andrews bless you! Me and my siblings did the same as you when my mum was dying, put all her old records on and clung on to those sweet, sweet memories Of yesteryear so as not to focus on the sad time waiting for us ahead xxxxx
Beautiful song of my youth, such memories.
A GREATSONG FROM THE SUMMER 0F 75, NOT ALOT OF US AIR PLAY BUT I HEARD IN KY AND I HAVE LOVE THIS SONG EVERY SINCE...
Takes me back ,if only for a short time to a golden age of great tunes .
His family
Must be so proud of him. May he rest in peace God bless him x
Went to school with his younger brother Phineas in the 70`s, a really good lad. Great days great music.
think everyone my age 59 will remember this lovely song.
The key change for the last chorus, such a common feature on records of the 60s and 70s.
Beautiful song from the beautiful seventies,
how comes the summers where longer and sunnier then?
Marcel King such an amazing singer, his vocal range was amazing, lucky enough to meet him in the 1970's at Bailey's night club in Watford,RIP,god bless
She is nowhere near this good and certainly not as much as she's hyped up to be.
everyone loved this one
best days of my life really miss them
I just love this old tune reminds me of my younger years Mark from London
I rembered this song. I was on the island of Nevis, West Indies, dreaming that I will be in America someday writing songs and have them published. I was in Nevis, West Indies in 1974, a teenager when I heard this group. I thought the group came out of
The Sounds of Philadelphia Gamble & Huff. I found out 34 years later that the lead singer was born in St. Kitts, West Indies. The group was founded in Mancheser, England in 1974. I arrived in the U.S. in 1979 -got a top single pick song.
I was born in 1974 and the midwife that delivered me was Marcel's (vocals) mum.
Wow!
That is totally unreal ...amazzzzzing something to proud to tell...All ❤
