Very interesting conversation. Thanks for sharing. The part about cultural appropriation made me realize that in America, if I walked into a grocery store in a karate uniform then no one would look twice, but if I did it in my kyudo uniform (especially the full formal one) people would freak out. It’s a weird line to walk.
And for the gate keeping, I was personally turned away from a dojo because they “didn’t know” me. Luckily I found another one but it still left a bad taste in my mouth. Even so my teacher refused to let me buy gear until I passed Nidan, because he didn’t want me spending money until I knew I would continue long term. The other form of “gatekeeping” I would say is the language barrier. Luckily my teacher is EXTREMELY patient but it still means I can’t read any books on kyudo without months of translation work. I don’t think that’s on purpose though. I feel that the kyudo community is very open to teaching in English, but just seems to lack the ability to do much of it at the moment. But, I’m hopeful for the future thanks to discussions like this one. Keep it up 👍

Hello everyone, thank you so much for such an interesting conversation! We practice Aikido, here in Perth, Western Australia, Australia. We have a Facebook page, and someone commented that based on a photo that we were teaching ---- terrorism!!!!! His view was solely based on our training uniform!!!! yeah - figure that one out?! Again, thanks so much, and we look forward to more wonderful conversations! Take care, all the best to you all! :) :) :)

This is a very interesting discussion. Not being a women, some of the female centric issues just would never have occured to me.

Fantastic podcast, I found it interesting to realise how many similarities there are between male and female practitioners, but also how many differences there are.
I feel there could be a whole series on what was said.
    Thank you very much

      Hi Scott 😊
Yes, we could almost definitely go further into some of the topics in this episode for sure, there are so many layers to unpeel.
We will be creating new episodes soon and we also have 5 more already released in this series in which we discuss some of what you mentioned above.
Thank you for watching and many thanks also for your comment!

@@maaiperspective I’ve been watching the backlog, and it’s honestly just great how well you blend talking about the martial philosophy with a slice of life approach. It certainly breaks how intimidating some of the topics can be to discuss.
I’m definitely looking forward to more content✌🏻
