Finally time to watch the whole video - suffering now from serious FOMO! What a wonderful group!
@@richardamos3173 We hope you see you soon and that next time you can be there too!
Just what I needed❤🎉 superb. I have taught both these arts and trained and taught for exactly 50 odd years.
super interesting to hear from 4 sensei’s pov coming from different levels of experience and backgrounds. Ah to be a fly on the wall…. oh, wait a minute 😉

One of my favorite seminars to date!
@@IvanMeloBudo Same here!
Tremendously enjoyed Sensei Yanti's classes.
@PhilippSchiffer it was great wasn't it? Loved the layered approach.
@maaiperspective So well structured, but also able to then change tack and adapt to our needs and progress. Amazing!
This is great. Quite helpful for a paper I'm writing right now. Check out the pilgrimage mandalas of nachi!
Hi David! I’d be very interested in reading your paper when you finish. What angle are you approaching the mandala?
@@IvanMeloBudo I finished it about a week ago. I wrote a broad overview of the mandala, and then compared it with a Sanno Miya Shrine Mandara. How should I get it to you?
If you could send it to aikidogyodokan@gmail.com (our dojo email address) that would be fantastic! Ivan
@maaiperspective Sent!
Hello, can you recommend me please where I can experience Kyudo in Japan? like where to book ? thank you
This has so many interesting points.
Congratulations on another very interesting episode! I was thinking about what you said about the beginner mind and motivation and how to the expert there are no options, and my thought there is that, as you progress through training, behind every little detail there is just a world more to learn. So, maybe keeping an open mind means acknowledging that through training we just access even more to master within the ever smaller getting confinements of what we already know, and being motivated means to keep getting excited about the smaller and smaller steps (which are not actually smaller because they move into a different dimension, so instead of forward they go deeper). I hope this makes as much sense to you as it does in my head :)
It certainly makes sense! "Instead of forward they go deeper" is a nice way to put it.
I just stumbled over your podcast and I am now 4 episodes deep in one afternoon... Thank you so much for these conversations. You really got me thinking a ton on many of the topics you touch. But the one thing I want to point out is how you got me to reflect on my own demeanor as a tall strong old white cis guy around the dojo and the Senpai Syndrome that comes with it. I teach a lot in my professional context and it happens to me a lot where I sort of bring that onto the mat even though I am in no position to do that. To not be too hard on myself, I do Judo, and its pedagogy is deliberately more explicit and deductive than in Aikido or Koryu, as well as the figure of the Sensei (we'd say instructor) being less prominent, but you've really made me think a lot about the ways that my behaviour may be undermining the core points of the class or be detrimental to my fellow students' progress in that I burden them with too many things to pay attention to... In short, your content is very enriching and there's a lot of inspiration to be found for everyone! Thanks!
@tobiasgretenkort463 Thank you for sharing your thoughts! It always makes us happy to hear someone finds value and enjoys our podcasts, as we really enjoy making them! You have stumbled across us at a good time as we are currently in the middle of Season 2 with our 3rd episode coming out this evening. You can find the S2 playlist on our channel. Once again, thanks for commenting 🙇🏻♀️🥋
This was a great episode! I loved hearing Roche Sensei's perspective and experience. I have wanted to learn naginata for decades, but don't live near a dojo...
Thank you for listening! Yes.. Naginata is enticing!
It’s always interesting to hear the opinions of different people, in different circumstances practising different arts and where it converges.
This is a good discussion - I've talked about this with Roo Heins Sensei about grading often (the concept, never asking to be graded because that would be rude). We test as a cohort (a group of us that train together...we're all white belts) and there's really been no schedule. Birankai aikido has a curriculum that's well defined and designed to develop specific skills/movements. There are definitely pros and cons - some people are motivated by knowing where they are relative to that curriculum. Some folks are too wigged out by exams.
Thank you for watching, and for sharing your experience!
Thank you for sharing great perspectives on Maai Perspective. Roo Heins Sensei is a great Instructor and wonderful human, with a rich history and life experiences. We are fortunate to have her here in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Great interviews as always, and thank you for giving space for all the strong women in budo. Jeremy
Fabulous interview Roo Sensei. You've been on the periphery of my training for decades now (literally), but I've never really had the chance to interface. It was a pleasure to get a feel for your perspective. Now I'm specifically looking forward to being on the mat with you!
I havent finished listening to the whole interview but wanna jump in and say - Very informative perspective and very good interview, this is great! Iaido is The study of ones own ego is a great way to put it, and Junto really highlights that, thanks Cathy! - *continues listening*
Thank you for saying so! Very glad people are finding it interesting and informative. :)
A very interesting interview. Thank you!
Some really interesting points of view , thank you
Such a great interview 🫶🏽🙌🏽
Hello Cathy and Fran! Claudio here, from Canada. I have been following the Aikido of London and Gyudokan Dojos for a while now and during this time I've always watched videos with a girl whose Aikido is absolutely incredible and today I learned that this girl is Fran! As an Aikido practicioner, I cannot compliment you and thank you enough for what you do for the Aikido community. And seeing so many people interested and practicing hard is a joy. I feel like fostering Aikido in Canada is very difficult and you're doing a great job there in the UK! Thanks and take care!
Hi Claudio, thank you for your kind words, we are so happy you find value in what we are doing! Sending best wishes to Canada, hope to make it there one day :)
@@maaiperspective Osawa Sensei is coming to Kelowna in October, which is near the Rocky Mountains. I will unfortunately not be able to be there but the rockies is one of the most beautiful places on earth, IMHO. And whenever you come to Ottawa region, if you wish to visit a Canadian Aikido dojo, don't hesitate to reach out to me! Cheers!

Great podcast , some interesting subjects , with regards on the whole grading thing ,you really had me searching what I think about not having kyu grades , for me the kyu grades give myself a point of reference of where I need to improve on to get to shodan and my sensei see what he is teaching is being translated correctly , if there was no grades ,I'd still train but I think alot would find it hard as many want that sense of achievement especially kids , Just my thoughts not judging ,each to his or her own
Thank you for sharing your thoughts, and thanks for watching!
So happy that you guys are back 🎉

What month was this trip?
Hi there! Apologies for the late response. The trip was early March 2024. Wonderful weather.
Wonderful video! I appreciated the quiet. No narrator babbling. Very little ambient noise. Great having a look at the dojo and Jess practicing.
So glad you enjoyed the video! It was a wonderful experience for us to be there.
美しい時間!
Very interesting video…i would have liked to see the hits. Those targets looked very small. Holding an arrow while shooting looks hard
Targets are 36cm across and distance is 28m
ただただ美しい。人ではなく造形物。鏡の様な湖面。ここはあの戦争をしている地球なのか…❤🎉
まさしく『全集中』という感じですね。 身体の隅々まで意識を行き渡らせる感覚が 心地よさそうです。
What a beautiful display of this very beautiful art. Thank you for this video.
かーっこ良い、、、! Cool...!
茶髪で弓道。やめてくれ。品がない。

Beuatiful performance!! The clip is the ART of kyudo heritage.
Hello everyone, thank you so much for such an interesting conversation! We practice Aikido, here in Perth, Western Australia, Australia. We have a Facebook page, and someone commented that based on a photo that we were teaching ---- terrorism!!!!! His view was solely based on our training uniform!!!! yeah - figure that one out?! Again, thanks so much, and we look forward to more wonderful conversations! Take care, all the best to you all! :) :) :)
The discipline and stamina required for this are hard to comprehend. I'd never heard of Ms. Gerrity. Now she has me reading about things like ikigai and finding my own ibasho, probably with fly fishing:).
