I only use short bow, take down recurve bow. That bow is quite large, but very nice. I don't have kata but similar meditative instinctive style of shooting. I sometimes close my eyes in the middle to focus on posture, then at the last open to sight target. My goal to be able to shoot naturally without the need of sight.
Very beautiful to watch, it is interesting how formalized the actions are. As a long time archer here in the US, I do have a "pace" I like to shoot, but there are no formal motions needed.
Thanks so much for watching! I started barebow takedown recurve last year and found many crossovers and interesting differences. I think the application of a martial art with set kata really sets it apart from archery but I love both! 🏹

Without special ordering a bow, the standard draw weights are 8-21kg. The average size bow, nisun nomi, usually is made in 12kg and up. I find beginners usually shoot 8-12kg, 8 for girls 12 for boys, 10 usually for new people over 40. You can special order draw weights higher than 21, I knew a girl that shot 26kg. I'd say on average most people that have done Kyudo for a while have 14-16kg bows.
@@TrueXyrael in western archery bow makers have there bows made for 28" draw lenght (from bow handle to archers jaw). With a Yumi(kyudo bow) draw lenght is from 30"-32"(bow handle to ear lobe). 1kg=2.2lbs . Check with the bow maker what draw length standard he is using (28"(71cm) or 31"(79cm)) ?
There are two types of arrows that are used; carbon fiber and aluminum. They vary in weight, the heavier ones are more powerful but having a weaker bow will cause more drop at distance. There are similarities between western and Japanese brands, like Easton shafts can be used. The only real difference is going to be arrow length; kyudo is generally going to be much longer. Kyudo is a thumb draw, so there is nothing that allows you to hold an arrow, it is limited to just a nock. Also, there are two types of fletching, clockwise and counter-clockwise, (haya and otoya), you should fire the clockwise arrow first, but it often takes years until a Kyudoka has mastered other elements of the hassetsu enough to spare the time to look at the fletching and figure out which is which. I've seen a lot of people 'cheat' and put a mark on the arrow to tell them which is which without looking back to the fletching. (not actually cheating, just not the "right" way)

Konnichiwa Senpai! Or should I address you more respectfully as Sensei. I'm starting to take up Kyudo. I'm watching ad rewatching videos that you made. They're really helpful. Can you give advise regarding common mistakes that a beginner usually do? And how to correct them early, so they wouldn't become bad habits. Arigato gozaimasu! 🥰
Kyudo is not just sports like archery but need to calm down hert to penetraite the target. I love any "do" sports in japan such as Judo, kenndo, kyudo etc which are basically based on same mantaritrity. stillness and motion.
When holding the second arrow with your string drawing hand, does the presence of the second arrow assist in any way? I’m imagining that it may function as a light form of stabilizer (like those found mounted to the front of some compound bow frames), keeping that (right) string hand more steady by dampening some of the inherent small wiggling motion.
We, in the childhood, learned to shoot from any position. If the target situated very far from me, the bow was prepared including the head help... We could be effective for hunt, but understood it was helpless for sport😮
You have a strong bow, how much spring (kg) and length(cm) ? Your pushing side (left side) elbow is laying. Was your left arm joint to your shoulder correctly? The head is slightly tilted.
So much of this looks like formalism for it's own sake. Certainly that must be a very low draw-weight bow. No bow of effective power could be held at partial and full draw like that.
The trick to Kyudo is all in tenouchi. By properly rotating the bow in your hand with correct technique, you build torque, and that torque will cause the bow to spin around (ideally, the string will gently slap against the back of your forearm as it completes a full rotation - Jessica does a great job in this video but her tenouchi still needs work and she did not get a full rotation, I bet she was nervous filming for a demonstration video!). The arrow is released as the bow rotates, so it is somewhat away from you at the moment of release. If you have bad tenouchi and the bow does not rotate at all, it can be painful because the string will hit your ear since it goes forward and not around, the feather vanes will often scratch your thumb knuckle as a result, and you can damage the bow from the force of the string slapping it and the vibration shaking it. I've hit my ear a couple times, I don't get target panic afterwards but I know people that do. I just go to the side and practice pulling until I reinforce the correct technique before shooting again.
The arrow vanes are not plastic they are feathers. At least when I was learning I always used a thin cloth glove on my bow hand and never sliced my thumb nukkle.
