My favorite guitar solo of all time. Your best friend asks you to play guitar for a song he's writing for his dying father. Petrucci absolutely crushed it.
What I was going to type, almost word for word.
My favourite solo of all time too
100% agree. There's lots of great solos out there, but this one just hits so beautifully.
@@randyhenderson6166 me too
Absolutely agree man. Haven’t heard anything more beautiful than this solo for sure.
Interesting fact: Mike's father Howard Portnoy (1940-2009) was the one who named Dream Theater.
❤
The solo at the end is not only beautiful and well-constructed, it's functional. It's like Petrucci is telling his friend "here, I know writing these verses just reopened a wound...I don't have more words for you but let this sound wash over you, dress that wound, and give you some time to process, to grieve, and to heal."
Two years ago i asked my father who was 82 years old to hear this song with me. He said to me that he felt so peaceful and emotional hearing Petrucci's solo. I isolated this solo and used it as a ringtone for my father's number at my mobile phone. My father died a few months later at my hands due to cardiac arrest. This song means so much to me.
What do you mean by at my hands? That sounds like you killed him with your bare hands and I'm pretty sure that's not what you meant.
@@scorpiusbalthazar4327 I didn't say ''by my hands'', i said at my hands, meaning that I tried to bring him back but it was too late.
May he rest easy❤
@@scorpiusbalthazar4327 Really? Smh.
@@labrosliapis1048 that's what I said, I asked what you meant by "at my hands".
John Petrucci really shines on this song .. that outro solo is just so amazing and emotional
Oh man, this brings me back 13 years, i was driving my truck, the day after the second funeral in 2 months within my group of friends ( I was 19 at the time). This song was blasting out of my radio and i had to stop to the side of the road because i couldn't stop crying... damn
Also, consider the rest of the band, esp. Petrucci and Myung who I'm sure knew Howard pretty well, then listen to the emotion John puts into the final solo. Another masterpiece.
When the Intro came in, I can't hold my tears, and then the outro.
That ending solo breaks me.
This song got me crying in the first place too man, damn...
This might be a good song to play for my dad since right now he's kind of going through something no one should go through, Alzheimer's Disease.
Petrucci born to play guitar man. The best guitar solo ever
Petrucci's solo is simply masterful here. The perfect blend of technique and emotion. Great reaction as always guys!
that solo is just world class. i don't think there's another like it really. it is so perfectly crafted and special. the whole song is so genuine and beautiful, then the solo just takes it into the stratosphere. it is extremely technical but somehow more emotional than most music you will ever hear. you can tell he took care to make it perfect for his friend.
i played this saong for one of my best friend i called dad when he was lying in the hosdpital dying from cancer. was surreal emotional. and i still today cry wqhen i hear this tune and now you brought it up.. .. I need tissues
Been into rock and metal for way over 50 years, and Dream Theater as a band are amazing. But this is got to be one of the greatest songs ever written, just lost for word's.
OMG this is my absolute favorite song by Dream Theater. The fact that Mike Portnoy wrote it for his dying father, and the instrumentals especially the guitar solo...incredible song. Thank you guys so much for reacting to this one. You are the best!
Any time I picture Mike and his dad together, Mike playing this and singing it to his himself, I think of my own father, and I ball. Impossible not to. Mike Portnoy is an incredible human being.
I first listened to this song the day the album was released and thought it was so powerful and emotional. Years later after my father passed away, I cannot listen to this without tears streaming down my face. The way music can draw your inner emotions says to me that it is the most powerful art form, personally. Thanks for this post. It struck a chord with me.
Thank you SO much for getting some context before you guys listened to this for the first time. There's some value in completely blind reactions, but I've been looking for reactions to this song for months and NOBODY "got" this song quite like you did and gave it the credit it deserves. I feel like I can stop searching now haha. It's not what some DT superfans feel is "true" Dream Theater but it's far my favorite of their songs.
My father passed away Thursday. This song.......
*pat on the back
I feel for you. My father passed away 8 years ago when I was 23. And time doesn't heal. Unfortunately.
I lost my mom to cancer on June 2021, there's a couple of songs I go to every time I need a good cry and this is one of them, this is also the best reaction i've seen of The Best of Times. Thank you so very much.
Good lord, petrucci absolutely nailed that solo, literally couldn’t have written a more epic solo for a song like this.
Please react to Octavarium - Dream Theater. I believe it was the greatest musical work I've ever seen. Kisses from Brazil
In the name off god também é top
Petrucci é o melhor guitarrista do mundo
Tears ... every single time, year after year, listening to this song ... thank you for that moment. As you said, an amazing work of art, this is the magic of music, being able to express what so many of us feel. This sensation of "yeah man, that's it, you nailed it, right into my heart ...".
And by the way, another reason why DreamTheater is so special...
Cheers from Paris
FACTS:
They never played this live. It's too hard for mike portnoy to play it live emotionally and mentally 💔
It's just too hard for him to carry those feelings.
And knowing they have played live the other three songs about their parents' deaths (Another Day, A Change of Seasons and Take Away My Pain. ACoS about Mike's mom, and the other two about JP's dad), you know they outdid themselves in the raw emotion department with this one.
Oh i see, i never knew that. That's why i never found The Song Live on UA-cam
Спасибо! Спасибо! Огромное спасибо вам! Эта композиция в моём сердце навсегда! Берегите память о родных и близких! Берегите близких!
My most favourite guitar solo all the time. 🥰
amazing song, amazing solo and amazing to remember my father
1:53 that version of the song was part of the Wither single release as a B-Side alongside John Petrucci's version of Wither. It's available on Spotify if anyone wanna give that version a listen.
Thank you for reacting. Just beautiful.
Nobody plays the guitar with as much emotion as John Petrucci He’s the best🎸
i can't stop crying with this song specially at the later part. one of my favorites, but keeping it played for some special time.
This solo gets me every time. Such a beautiful song and solo!
I just replied to comment this statement, but I'll say it again. This is the most important song of my life. When he said "the two score and a year we had..." it hit me, because if you flip it, and say "one score and two years we had" is exactly when my father died. It's been 11 years and to this day and this viewing, I cannot get through this song without openly weeping. Only few people will know how lost I feel without him. And Mike Portnoy is the closest to put into words how I feel about my dad dying. I live each day by the line "my heart is bleeding bad, but I'll be okay. Your spirit guides my life each day." I can go on for hours why this is a perfect representation. But I think I've made my point.
You rarely see power combined with wisdom in music! This is epic, the guitar solo tells the whole story by itself, unbelievble🎉
This song gives me chills everytimes I listen to it. There is no perfection, but I do think this song is perfect. This song, just got something more than everything else. You feel every emotion in every part, every notes, every mesure. And right now, I have tears again listening to it haha!
Off of the same album, Count of Tuscany. its just as good as this,
Probably the most emotional-sensitive DT song ever written, and that solo...beautiful and very painful!
Worlds best solo in this song... God damn!
Petrucci really knocked this one out of the park.. this is a beautiful song!!
simply AWESOME .... maybe the best song of ever ... surely the best solo of ever ... Mike Portnoy asked to the other members of band to no play this song on Live, 'cause it was personal for him and for the band. They promised it to him and the didn't play this emotional amazing song on Live ... 4 respect of Mike's dad!!
Best solo from jp in my opinion
In my opinion too, this is the best guitar solo ever of dream theater
That song brings me to tears !!! Great reaction you guys ... Holy smokes i need an emotional break ...
Awesome jam yeah, good song for Dad's, good review 👍😝👌🎤🥁🎸🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I love this song so much!! anytime I hear it i cry lol!
Please react THE SPIRIT CARRIES ON and also DIE ANOTHER DAY. Iam so in love with these two am sure you also do
You've witnessed one of the greatest guitar solos ever... Thanks, Eric! Great song...
Finally, I love the way your hair matches your headphones. Awesome!
"Piano and Violin, two of the most emotional instruments". Guitar walks in.
But they're right, maybe everyone has different taste, but I'm myself a guitar. I feel violin and piano are the most emotional instruments.
But in this song, at the end of solo outro is played by Electric Guitar. It's so fucking emotional, it's just feeling a sadness
Un vero intenditore capisce che questo assolo finale è superlativo 👌
I loved to watch as the colour of your faces changed while listening to this :') I love this song as well.
Going to see them live here in Trondheim,Norway may 20.. cant wait. It will be third time they play here
My favorite guitar solo, just above Limelight, Lonely Is the Word (Iommi), 25 or 6 to 4 (Terry Kath live in 1970) and Made of Tears (live Joe Satriani)
I love you John Petrucci
Finally, I have been waiting for this reaction.
In memory of Howard Portnoy. May the father of the greatest drummer of all time rest in peace.
Did anyone else notice that Suzy's hair matches her headphones exactly? pink on top...blue on the bottom. excellent!
Wow thanks guys this is a reaction! A timeless guitar solo 🎸
This is such a great reason for me to want to slap the haters who say John Petrucci only knows how to shred and doesn’t have “feel”
Pretty sure they are just salty that it is technical AND emotional and they can’t sloppily imitate it without sounding like ass lol
I have seen many reactions...even for this song...but now, when we (with my girl) are expecting our first baby it gets me more ano more...I wish my junior one day will want to say..."Those were the best of times, daddy..." exactly as Mike wrote this...
I keep holding my cry every time I hear this song
Beautyful song of my favorite band ❤🤘
Uno de mis temas favoritos de ellos!!! 😍😍😍😍😍😍
This solo grabs your soul
When John Petrucci leaves us, this will be one of darkest days in my life!
Best guitar🎸 solo i ever heard
JP is absolutely epic on this song in pretty much every way imaginable
Thanks for these 22 minutes, love you guys.
Love this solo, favorite part Is 19:22 till19:34
I must say, you are two very cool people!🙏🏻♥️🤟🏻
All the part of this music is my halflife
The best solo gitar ever
Hey guys. Really enjoy your reaction videos. Especially the ones on DT. If you want to react to another Dream theater epic written by Portnoy you should really check out "A change of seasons". Preferebally the live version from the record "Live at Roseland Ballroom".
The song is about when Portnoy lost his mother in a plane crash. Read the back story and have the lyrics close. I promise no eyes will stay dry. The live version I have in mind also have a little fun musical twist to it. Higly recommended!!
Keep up the good work 🤘
I think the most important thing one can take away from this song, is how mundane the “best of times” really are. It’s not the big, spectacular grand gestures that Mike remembers and talks about fondly, it’s the everyday moments that happen all the time. It’s the fact that his father was there to share these experiences with him that make them special.
I❤️this song, sadmelodic 😭😭😭
Hats off for great Petrucci from a mexican fan.
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Is imposible not to cry
Fun fact: This song has never been played live because of how personal it is to Portnoy.
Imagine there are people who think Dream Theater has no emotion. Oof. I'm right there with you guys. I can't get through this song without tearing up.
Yes DT forever!!
You can see her emotion, (I don't know what her name is) and yes, the song, although it is a great song, is painful
Where were you guyz this long @wolf hunterz
Song name should be:-
Best solo of all the time ❤️
Love you two so much

Puro Rush... Los padres de dream theather... Obra maestra
Some of these comments are a bit insensitive. Please comment on how much you love your parents or someone close to you that inspired you. Seems more appropriate. My relationship with this band is basically a story of my own life, and quite emotional, I'm now 51 years old and I have been with Dream Theater since the beginning. Please search deeper into your souls and feel the emotions in the lyrics and music. Peace and Love, and just choose to be a good person.
Please react to Abim finger , to this song , Amazing .
