  • It’s time to start treating physician burnout as a system issue, not an individual one. Tait Shanafelt, Chief Wellness Officer for Stanford Medicine and former Director of the Mayo Clinic Department of Medicine Program on Physician Well-Being, lays out how during the NEJM Catalyst June 2016 event, "Leadership: Translating Challenge to Success." catalyst.nejm.org/doi/full/10...

Dr Z mentioned that burnout is victim shaming and it's better to call it Moral Injury. The system, not the individual, is to blame.

I ve been doing primary care for 12 years and have seen a fare share of MD and NP and RN burn out... they have one thing in common, they invested themselves emotionally too much into the patients... and that's the common thread that eventually burned them out.

You could say this about many, many positions. And positions that pay a fraction of an MD.

So those whiny doctors should just be more resilient? Guess you didn't listen to the speaker.

True. But as an ICU doctor, the overwhelming majority of professions out there don't deal with the extremes of the human condition 90hrs a week and scrutinized under a high-powered microscope to be absolutely perfect at all things all the time. And there aren't too many professions where payment for services rendered can be outright refused and there are no consequences. Remember, we are paying professional athletes, entertainers etc. mega millions a year to do things that kids can do with equal enjoyment factor. I make but a fraction of what they make.
