  • Part 3 of my test/ review of the new film offering by Ferrania - P33. In this final video we load and shoot five different cameras and look at real world example images made with them: Leica M3 with 135mm lens, Widelux F7, Wirgin Custom Panoramic Camera, Alfie and the Zeiss Hologon Ultrawide. All P33 film was processed in a mix of HC110 and Rodinal based on votes made in Part 2.
    What are your thoughts on this new film?

    Indeed it is a good film emulsion testing class. All the shots are great and meniscus lens shot more eye catchy and gives the feeling of painting than H. Q lens. Thank you sir

    Thanks for an excellent comprehensive review of P33. I don’t feel the urge to go out and buy this film, though I’d be curious to see how it works with D23, and silver printing.

    Hi Steve,
    I found this 3-part set of videos when doing a search on P33. I’ve been shooting mostly B&W film for about a year now, and have been really loving the process of developing film in my Patterson tank at home, then scanning with my DSLR.
    I really like the variety of cameras and developers you used here, and also your thoughts when viewing the results. It makes me want to really dive into film development by taking an in-depth class somewhere. Maybe a community college.
    I also like the magical images you created with just a walk in the woods, transforming the ordinary into something special.
    Anyway, I’m now a subscriber!

    Yes. It’s different.
    I thought it was very contrasting.
    And I think it might be better for architectural pictures, although it might make it very busy with the deep contrasts.
    Thanks for sharing your experience! 👍🏻

    Thanks for the review of this B&W film.
    Many years ago I bought some Ferrania 200 color print film that was being sold at discount stores and it had a unique look. Reds seemed to pop at you in interesting ways.

    I find P33 to be really a stunning film and I will choose it over Fomapan 100 (which I also love). For me to spend the extra $ for P33--that is really saying something about this film--because I'm cheap as heck. I processed P33 in Rodinal 1:50, 11 min, w/ very gentle agitation every 2 min. Contrast is much more workable than P30--this makes it a good everyday film while P30 is better reserved for special situations. I'm amazed at that it retains the tonal range and highlights that are so vibrant and alive--this is the quality of Ferrania that stands out from every other current B/W product by Foma, Kodak, & Ilford. The rendering of fine detail is far ahead of Fomapan 100...and with a grain level I would expect to see in a 50 iso film, even in Rodinal. I'm actually kind of amazed at what they accomplished in that respect.

      Hi! I saw another reply you posted to Steve that P30 is your favorite B&W film. Here you talked about special situations where you would use P30 instead of P33. Does this mean P33 is now you primary B&W film, and what are the special situations where you’d use P30 instead?
      Thanks! (I’m going to be shooting some P33 for the first time. )

      @@markmuller3086 I'm still in the learning phase with P33--I bought 7 more rolls, so it's looking like it may be my new favorite. It's just a little more flexible, but still not an 'easy' film. When you get it right, the rewards are just amazing

    I have some really great family portraits with P30 … that half-ortho is nice … I like that you embraced the contrast and had it work for you in the images

    Just finished my first roll of P33 and was surprised by two things: one, it has cine sprocket holes, and two seems to suffer badly from halation. I first thought I was seeing lens flare, but the "flare" extends past image edge and well into the sprocket area. Did you notice this effect in any of your backlit images?

    • @FIGITALREVOLUTION
      @FIGITALREVOLUTION  6 місяців тому

      Never had that kind of an issue with flare- what camera were you using and what developer.

      @@FIGITALREVOLUTION D76, 1:1 dilution, timed as per Ferrania's instructions. Camera was an Ihagee Exa + Schneider Xenon. At the same locations I also ran through a roll of Kentmere 100 and a roll of ORWO UN54. I did not see this flare on the ORWO, but did see a less severe flare on the Kentmere, which I've been told has a weak anti-halation layer. The day was overcast and flare appeared around backlit trees.

    • @FIGITALREVOLUTION
      @FIGITALREVOLUTION  6 місяців тому +1

      Hmmmm-- I did have flare where I really pushed it to happen like shooting almost directly into the sun- it is indeed “possible” that the film is more prone to flare as it is based on older film qualities- better wording perhaps could be can exhibit flare in specific hard light and back lite situations- I for one love flare in my work but it can be over done - I’d keep shooting and determine when exactly it happens-

      @@FIGITALREVOLUTIONDecided to try another roll today, and was surprised to find this roll has normal sprocket perforations. Went back to look at the first roll just to check that I wasn't going crazy. First roll has cine (B&H) perfs. Which style sprocket holes did you have on your rolls? I'm going to look at the 3rd roll I got when I have a chance.

    Have you tried the Rodinal and HC-110 mix also with the P30? Talking about the P33 instead, I still have to try it, I hope they will release soon the third black and white film of the family, P36 wich it will be a 320 ISO. I hope the P36 will be good because for my shooting style it's more convenient a 400ish ISO film than a 80 or 160. If turns out to be good I will consider to buy a 100ft/30m bulk roll when they will have it available in the future.

  • @DanMars27

    What’s your ratio (amounts) of HC-110 to Rodinal? Gonna try it first.

    • @FIGITALREVOLUTION
      @FIGITALREVOLUTION  7 місяців тому

      500 ml water and for NC use 2ml of Rodinal and 2 ML of HC110- 3-5 minute prewet at temp then add developer 68F and do 10 gentle inversions in 1 minute-- let rest for 30 minutes and complete development.

    11,70€, this film is super expensive! 80 iso, 160 iso... These Ferrania films seem to me to be old-generation films like the Foma, sold with a modern marketing ploy to justify the price... 🙄
    Is it better than a fomapan 200@160 iso? Not sure... But what is certain is that by buying a 30.5m rolls of Fomapan, my 36 exposure film costs me around 2.50€...

    • @FIGITALREVOLUTION
      @FIGITALREVOLUTION  7 місяців тому

      Not sure about the modern marketing ploy as I do like P30 a lot but as I said in the review it is hard to beat Fompan 100 for look, quality and price.

      @@FIGITALREVOLUTION It's just that Ferrania has the same mentality as Leica today... I really like old Leica M, but less so the current state of mind and exaggerated prices... second hand Leica M prices are skyrocketing, it's ridiculous! 😂
      Yes, I like the Fomapan 200@125 iso, and the 100@80 iso even more, both in Xtol 1+2 🙂

      I agree with the Leica comment - they have lost their minds and I for one feel that anything after the M4 when the family sold is not the same beast- but making a “new” film and bringing it online for full production is not cheap or easy- nice to have options in 2024 and there are many times I use Fompan and for specific times Ferrania P30-
