  • Part 2 of my review of the new Ferrania P33 black and white film! In this video we look at 5 different developers and how they worked and did not work in some cases with our test image photographed in Part 1. Processing by hand and with a JOBO Processor plus scanning images with an Imacon 646 and reviewing the images and details all make up this post.
    Part 1:
Ferrania P33 New B&W FILM Review Part 1
    • Ferrania P33 New B&W F...
The next installment will focus on 5 different cameras and shooting styles with P33 all processed in one selected developer.

HC110 + rodinal looks gorgeous. To my eyes this photo with that developer combo has an almost three dimensional look to it.

Ferrania+ Rodinol 1:25 is my favorite combo after seeing this.Wow.💥👍🏆

HC-110 + Rodinal looked really well-rounded and polished. I loved the punch & crunch of the solo Rodinal, however. Great analysis and deep dive, thanks for the vids!

Thanks for sharing! Wasn't planning on try P33 but the results from Rodinal(one of my main developers) look fantastic.

Fantastic information. I'm just getting back into film, esp BW. I've been using DF 96 with BWxxx. I just scored some diafine, and found an older stash of mine of some Rodinol, will try to get some P33 and follow along. Diafine looks really promising as a go to bw solution.

My favorite is caffenol at 59° stand developed or Rodinol 1:100 at 59° stand developed... So far my fave is caffenol with Kentmere Pan 100. Tomorrow I'll be doing a roll of Ilford Pan F.

I was at RIT in the early 90’s when Caffenol was invented- I have lots of articles on it on FIGITAL Revolution 1.0- I think Caffenol CL would be great with this film-- I think I still own Caffenol.com 😂

I had some difficulty processing P30 with Caffenol, but it looks like P33 is an easier emulsion to work with in development. I was an '85 RIT SPAS grad myself. You should write that book! #pourthecoffeeandCwhatdevelops

HC 110 + Rodinal for me the best. I use this combination a lot. I'm an analogue printer using an condenser enlarger and with HC 110+ Rodinal the negs are easy to print.

Hi, I just used two developers for P33. Bellini Ecofilm (XTol equivalent), 1+3, 12 minutes at 20 Celsius, and Ornano Nucleol (by far my favorite developer), 2+1.5, 10 minutes at 20 Celsius. Both worked well. Nucleol should be probably developing around 7-8 mins rather, but wow…

Love the video! great to see the tests so quick after the film's release. would be great if you could try a standard 1+4 with Ilfotec dd-x, its my go to for all films inlcuding ortho and p30

I agree with your top 3 choices. To my eye, the Rodinal 1:25 pleased me the most, the rendering is more vivid and three dimensional. The monobath was dull and boring, just blah.

Looks good! Much better looking film than the very disappointing P30. With the exception of developing different types of B+W film at the same time, I've never seen a benefit to stand development. The highlights always seem to blow out before the shadow detail develops. The HC110 + Rodinal is nice but suffers the same problem. The Rodinal 1+25 has the best tonality here. Thanks for this test! Very informative.

I actually very much like P30. Stand development to me is always mixed bag but helps in this case control the contrast of the film and helps the film achieve box speed. Highlights should not blow out with stand if done correctly-

P30 is IMO the finest B/W film being produced today. It is a genuine and faithful copy of mid-century cinema emulsion and is capable of tonality like no other. All other B/W films made today have been tweaked in numerous ways over the years 1) to make them more foolproof in exposure/developing (not necessarily a bad thing); 2) to reduce silver content (good only for manufacturers); and 3) to reduce grain (not always a good thing). So it would be easy to mistake P30 for a poor quality film if one isn't aware of the changes from now to 60-70 years ago. Photography back then was not so standardized in terms of manufacturing nor were (B/W) labs using off-the-shelf developers like they do today. It was even more of a 'wild west' in cinema, as film stock wasn't expected perform identically from batch to batch, and each film production had to arrive at their own standard along with a lab that was using their own particular developer brew. Also, as a cinema film, one has to understand the requirements for film prints are not the same as for paper prints, particularly in shadow detail and contrast. Look carefully at the Italian neo-realist films of the 50s-60s and you'll see what I mean.

Yes, I agree and as I stated P30 is my favorite Ferrania film and definitely a go to for my work- that and 5222 and Fompan 100 when I’m on a budget- modern formulations don’t have the feeling I’m am looking for in my work.

Great set of videos. One thing caught my eye and that is that you use your Jobo to process the film in Diafine. The last summary of your 10 recommendations for using Diafine that you posted as a video 2 years ago suggested using a pre-wet, manual processing with 5 minutes in A and B, and infrequent agitation. You briefly mentioned 3.5 minutes in A and B at 70F. Do you also use the Jobo for the pre-wet? Can you please give a quick summary of how you use the Jobo with Diafine? Thanks!

    • @FIGITALREVOLUTION
      @FIGITALREVOLUTION  4 місяці тому

In the JOBO you can use a prewet with Diafine - just know that overtime you are slowly diluting part A so that is a consideration- I use it most at 5 min for the prewet - biggest thing is to slow down the rotation- so have it at P when you add the part a and part b but as soon as it is added slow the speed down to like 3 - after part A/B run the JOBO and normal speed for wash/ fix and wash-- works like a champ. If you choose not to do a prewet still run for a minimum of 3 minutes and a max of 5 in A/B-- some films are fine without a prewet and others really want it to be a cleaner development-
