Somehow during casual conversation with my hairdresser I brought up The Lottery. She had no idea what I was talking about. I'm a pleasant person, especially around people who have scissors at hand and are about to apply chemicals to my roots, so I moved on. But I did wonder what they're teaching kids in school these days. So I guess that makes me a silent insufferable book snob and a boomer. I would judge someone who is reading Dan Brown but then again I read Dan Brown. That's how I formed my poor opinion of his writing style.
interesting Michael, thanks. I suppose I have been guilty of all of these crimes in my life, but I think mostly as a younger man. I have become much more easy going in this regard as I've gotten older, to be honest i just love to see another person reading a book, don't care what it is. I have found that it helps immeasurably to be a lover of genre fiction. Even the illiterate are book snobs when it comes to SF and horror, and that can help any book lover stay grounded. As for popular fiction, I find that if I see a very popular novel in a second hand book shop or charity shop I will often pick it up and have been pleasantly surprised many times. I apologize to no one for my love of Lee Child's Jack Reacher novels.
You're a unique voice in #booktube -- please don't stop anytime soon. Duly noted. Great video.
Thank you for the kind words (and the new words!)😁Oddly enough, I found this comment in the 'blocked comments' folder. Maybe YT was afraid it would go to my head😅
Excellent advice Michael! I was surprised you did not mention The Shining! 🤣 Unless you "dislike" both book and movie. 🤣🤣 You are a loveable book snob Michael. and I look forward to reading Ediface Complex soon.
😁And you also have not unsubscribed to this channel despite my frequent and vehement slandering of a classic you hold in high regard, which is further proof of your open-mindedness and of your not being an insufrable book snob😻
I like being an insufferable book snob. 🙂 and who the fk doesn't know who Shirley Jackson is!? I remember having to read the Lottery in middle school.🤦♀️ Michael you need to read Drawing Blood, it's soo good! One of my favorite movies ever is Firestarter with Drew Barrymore. I hated the book.😂xx❤️
OK. I'm sold. Drawing Blood is on my TBR. Thanks for the recommendation. Let's cut the girl some slack, though. She's a 20-something Latvian. She knows who Shirley Jackson is now😃
And I did not have a heart attack reading that. Progress! 🙃Thanks for sharing. (To share a similar confession, I only heard about Thomas Ligotti a year or so ago thanks to a viewer of this channel.)
There is NO personal attack here (unless you are a Dan Brown fan who has never heard of Shirley Jackson. Then, I suppose feeling attacked would be justified, though unintended).
@@Michael_Wertenberg hahaa, I thought the Catriona Ward bit sounded familiar 🤪 Sorry, not a Dan Brown fan. I honestly don't get upset at people liking shitty authors. I'm just happy if they are reading, and there is something out there for everyone
As an American I can easily admit I haven't read To Kill a Mockingbird or Lord of the Flies. I was always in advanced classes and since I was doing college level classes in high school they didn't have a normal syllabus. We were given a list of books and could choose what we wanted to read. I've never read The Outsiders, either, and I live in Oklahoma.

😅"I'm a pleasant person around people with scissors in hand" Good rule of thumb😅
Guilty as charged: I am an insufferable book snob. Not ashamed of it either.
Stay strong🦾
Agree about the book movie comparison. They're such different ways to tell a story it's hard to compare them.
Unless it's the newest " Rosemary's Baby" tv miniseries that was hot garbage. ;)

The Shining movie is one of my all-time favourites! I didn't mention Stephen King because I don't want to lose subscribers🙃
That's all excellent advice. Nuff said!
Thank you, Eric. Now, that I've given the advice, I just need to follow it.

@@Michael_Wertenberg True. I almost commented that NOT slandering Mary Shelley's Frankenstein should be added to your list of traits to avoid.

Why do I feel slightly attacked here? The panic for someone not knowing Shirley Jackson is justified.

@@Michael_Wertenberg Sorry to say I've never read that either.

I didn't have the courage to bring up Lord of the Rings. But you're right, that's a book snob staple.
I always flex my book snob LotR status by saying "And I've also read "The Silmarillion". lol
This video right here is a must watch! Much appreciated
