  • My veiwers Al Bebee and Lifttube asked me how to make the "My Backyard Railroad" train. Lets start with the wheels( the most critical part to make, but simple). I used a rear 8" rim with the "flat" bead seat off of a yard tractor.

The high dollar wheels were the only thing holding me back. Thanks a lot. See you on the rails!

When you were describing a train going around a curve it reminded me of a documentary I saw demonstrating the forces on a loaded train. They put a piece of string into an s-shape to simulate the train going round bends. Then they pulled on the ends of the string which straightened it out and said that's what a track wants to do. Hope that makes sense.

I saw 'Junkyard Wars' where they took 2 tapered buckets and put an axle between them and rolled them on a curved rr and they followed the curve , put staight cans on each end and the fell off the tracks.

Great job on the videos you make especially the abandoned mines you should see about taking a mine safety course at one of the votechs that way you would be familiar with how they work down there and you should get a miners hardhat and msha

You don't need flanged wheels. You can use any regular wheel with a stationary flange. All you need is a piece of flat iron about 5 inches long, with the ends bent up slightly, that brushes along against the inside of the railroad track. Leave about a quarter inch gap. Also, the flanges don't have to be in exact alignment with the wheel, they can be slightly ahead or behind, doesn't matter

The steel in those wheels is very soft and will deform after carrying any kind of serious load for a while. We made a full sized track cart using big truck rims for use on a real RR project and within a week the wheels were junk.

So far, they lasted 5 yrs. I tell everyone that operates it not to 'slip the wheels'.

A Gravely L with wheels like yours would make for an excellent starting point for a loco. ;-) I noticed the exploded diagram of the Gravely tractor transmission on your wall. I have the color version. And the fact that you also have a Hobart welder.
