I've been across that trestle. About 22 years ago, we road our mountain bikes down from Jacumba, and then continued all the way down to the desert, where I had stashed my van for the trip back to the top. It was a once in a lifetime adventure. Thanks for sharing yours.
I hiked along the tracks from the south a couple months ago. We started from Carrizo Gorge road off the 8 and hiked to the trestle. There were no bolders on the tracks. I wish we had a ride. That looks like a lot of fun 😊
Never will, the bridges are not up to standard and will have to be completely rebuilt, and same for all the tunnels. If a line were needed, it would be much easier to follow a similar route to the nearby 8 and would likely be much cheaper.
Financially, it always lost money. Even in its heyday. Southern Pacific wanted the route to be officially abandoned. Washington denied abandoning the line and mandated that Southern Pacific repair it. Two tunnels and two bridges had burnt and 'repair' required abandoning one of the tunnels and rerouting that section. $Cha-ching. Passenger service (to Yuma) have been killed off around 1950 (from lack of riders). Circa 1975 most people living in San Diego were oblivious that the line existed and that it had a section that traversed the gorge. Stories from old timers who had ridden the passenger trains (all steam powered, those tunnels had to be fun) surfaced and public support for a tourist/sightseer (up and back) train in the gorge got traction. Although they got the line back into a usable state Southern Pacific refused to offer the tourist train. It's owned these days by the Metropolitan Transit District (San Diego) purchased from Southern Pacific in 1979.
Entertaining video, guys! Kind of shocked to see the disrepair out there on the tracks with the fallen boulders and stuff like that. Looks like the railway is truly abandoned once again. Was kind of confused watching the video about which direction you were traveling on the tracks. I saw you by the water tower, but did you start there or end up there? The reason I’m asking is because I’ve always wanted to hike to the trestle from the water tower end of the line. But I had heard that one of the first tunnels you come to when going that direction had a major collapse at its entrance several years ago ago. Was wondering if that collapse had been cleared. I know people were climbing over the collapse and then making their way through the tunnel, but I was wondering if the rocks were still there at its entrance. I hiked to the trestle about 10 years ago or something like that from the De Anza end. Awesome hike. All the tunnels were open back then. Truly spectacular event that one will never forget! Keep up the good work on your videos! 👍
@@JunkYardLoungeTVthis is so cool! We’ve mountain biked out there over the past few years, and it’s cool to see that you can access it with the carts too :) Great views!!
I’ve seen another explorer actually clamber all the way down to those old reefer cars, and yes, they do have old coors beer bottles, the classic steel ones I think.

Just came from another channel doing the same stretch, they carried their cart on the side of both those places were rock had fallen on the rail :P They never got to the bridge with their cart because they didnt have conical shaped wheels :D

Thank you! I was about to write the same thing. Another pet peeve is "train car", when the correct term is "rail car" or "railroad car". So much for the technical knowledge of the mainstream media. Great video though.
I see that some of the rail runners have very wide urethane wheels and then again yours . are the typical train wheels. Did you have any problem derailing with the track not being parallel to each rail
You won't see much more of this. The SD&AE, which was never economically viable, will be scrapped out soon. SP ran it until '79 as a tax write-off, since the boneheaded ICC wouldn't approve abandonment. Even if completely rebuilt, the line could never make a profit, since containerization is now the mainstay in freight, and that means stacks, which would be unfeasible, even with a billion in improvements. Spreckles was a whacko with too much money and not enough sense.
I really enjoyed your video dispite all the breakdowns it was a fun adventure, can't wait to see what you do next.G.M.😅
Meraviglioso !!!!

It's a 20 mile trek from Jacumba to the desert.

It's a blast! Totally worth it😊
Ah ah ah. What a coincidence. This morning I watched Merli and the Ford T. And now you. Doing the same track, the same days. Moving that rock... ;-)
Also.
That Railway should be Restored and brought back.

I-8 goes over 3 mountain passes there too steep of grades for rail.
Problem is. Who owns it?

That was so cool! And your laugh is the best! ❤

It seems you guys need a few heavy duty brooms to clear crossing and sand on the rails. It looks like fun, but damn hot fun.
Or a Backhoe on train wheels
Time to start bringing a jackhammer in your toolbox! 🤣
Next time!😂
Don't forget the dynamite 🧨
I wish I could do that!! Looks like Fun!! 😊😅

Thanks so much!
Edits are good!
Thank you!
Just watched another video of that rock getting moved.
Working together.
I think somebody should eventually head out there and clear all of the boulders still on it.
We're up for the challenge😎
Engine lift might be easier.

It wasn't locked

100. Comment best regerds from TR 🇹🇷
I cant belive the cyote is compleatly gone frome under that rock

Fun video! How in the world did you ever find that old Gang Car?
Keep watching the channel, we will be doing a follow up video that will tell a little more of the story.
I just watched some guy named Preston go on that same track with a go kart how popular is this
if I remember right this track is severed at both ends that cross the US/Mexico borders
You guys can make a killing in content if you can get a mini excavator to clear that entrance collapse.
For the tunnel? That would be nuts if we were able to do that
I "like" it! Where do I get one of those speeders?
Any old guys back yard

Cool video! FWIW, there's no such thing as a "trestle bridge." That's like saying "we went fishing down by the river river."

What is this railroad called?
bring a rail wheeled road excavator and clear the rock slide....
That would be really awesome

@@barrygreenstein2816 Nope. Just a little wobbly where the track got wider in spots.

Northwestern 566-W
I learned from a retired railroad bridge engineer that it is called a motor car
brisk walking pace on a flat surface is about 3 mph ...
They definitely got their steps in for the day
I agreed
if you brought chisels and hammers. you would have had a much easier time removing the rocks overall,
Was there a coyote under that rock
It was a scorpion
Too bad there is no way to clear that rockslide!
If only we had a plow, jackhammers and a crew of 40
