- Here's the next Three-For-All Lesson with 3 Akira Takasaki Licks From 1983. Akira is a metal and hard rock guitar legend and he was the #1 request from viewers in September.
As a reminder, I'm going to take the top three requests each month and add them to the following month's material, so keep those requests coming and thanks so much for the feedback and support for LNL!
This lesson takes a look at several ideas from a true "thunder from the east" and pinpoints several cool ideas during a bootleg Loudness concert in Japan from 1983. This includes a furious sweep-picked arpeggio workout, a few EVH inspired tapping licks, an interesting tapped chord idea, and more!

Saw these guys in 85 or 86 in a bar called Harpos in Detroit, we sat at a table off to the side of Akira just a few feet away and holy cow our minds were blown. I was just starting to learn guitar and he instantly became one of my guitar heroes!
Just saw Static-X at Harpos.
My band was a local opener for the Misfits at harpos in 2013 fun time
I found this in harpos concert database theconcertdatabase.com/concerts/loudness
Opened up for Ace Frehley at Harpo’s back in ‘94.
Loving this month. Akira is underrated in the western world. He is an incredible talent. Great video!
The Disillusion album from 1984 was my introduction to Loudness and Akira. I can still remember how hearing that album blew me away. The three that you listed are all equally as good as.... one hello of a Guitarist.
Thanks for the lesson and thank you for reminding me of many hours spent listening to Loudness and just hard rock in general. It never leaves you does it!!
I truly enjoyed this lesson! Thanks again! I consider you a "guitar players' guide.. No bs or cookie cutter crap. I find these lessons informative, fun, and challenging at times. You seem like you would be fun to hang out with and jam.
Great lesson! Tapping those chords was really awesome!
Akira is one of my biggest influences! Saw them twice recently & they are still killer
Big influence on me too!! 💚🎸
Always loved Akira's playing
Awesome lessons! I'm a huge Akira Takasaki fan! He's such an awesome guitarist!
Awesome!!! Thank you for looking out!!! LOUDNESS!!!! AKRIA!!!!
Im a Big Loudness fan since 1987. I never suggested Akira because I didn't think you knew em or were a fan of them.
I saw Loudness open for AC/DC. We all formed a line and walked to the front of the stage to watch Akira up close.
I saw them fronting for Mettellica/ride the Lightning. My attention was on Akira.
Really impressive and inspiring.
I still have my Loudness cassette tapes somewhere. Not sure if they would even play now, but the nostalgia is strong with them.
Nothing beats The early stuff like “Heavy Chains”! Hope these guys tour the US again they still put on a great show!
Hello from Japan. So sorry for my humble English.
Thank you so much for releasing many of great videos.
As many of you have already noticed,
at the beginning of Exploader,
Akira didnt use sweep picking, neither string skipping.
He did as 5:03 code form, but he played with 100% alternate picking.
No hammer-on, no pull-off.
mainly because of 2 reasons.
(1) he persued more aggressive nuance and tone
(2) sweep picking was too new at that era (it was long years before Yngwie came out)
Years later, in some interview article,
Akira admitted that the part would have been far easier to play with sweep picking.
After that, you can find some video Akira is playing that part using sweep picking.
Thank you for this comment and for watching too!
I found this concert footage from 1983 and then another concert from 2010 and he played the same solo. I noticed that he used sweep picking in the more recent video (and you could see his hands) but in the older video you couldn't really see what he was doing (it was dark and shadowy).
So I noticed the difference in the way he played it and just went with the sweep version in this lesson - it's MUCH easier.
Thanks again for watching and take care!
\m/ ROCK AND ROLL \m/
He did it Gary Moore style
@@kevinprowse406 Yes, that is 100% correct.
At that time, 1982,83-ish in Japan,
Gary Moore style was super hot, popular and MUST DO among young shredders in Japan (no matter professional or amateur).
(I was one of them LOL)
Fast picking, Strong picking, try 100% picking. kinda era.
At that time "playing like Gary Moore" was one single choice and MUST DO among JPN shredders,
and Akira was one of the best in JPN.
Old man like me, I was one of live witnesses in JPN.
We had to wait for Yngwie andf Geroge Lynch to come to realize that
you do not have to pick strings that hard at all for great guitar tone.
David DUUUUUDE🤯 Yeeeeees, you took my request from a few weeks ago👍 THANK YOU SIR! Akira is about my fav. all-around metal player..His solo album Brown to Black is really cool. Quirky and fusiony. Good stuff
Love Akira´s playing!!!!!....You made my day with this video man..thanks!
Soldier of Fortune solo lesson would be super interesting! Some sick harmony and techniques there
Man, did Akira have a killer tone! And I'd add "Disillusion" to your record list. Didn't have the major label polish of "Thunder in the East" yet, but the fantastic guitar work is already in full bloom. Just listen to "Crazy Doctor"!
Agreed! Although I very much enjoy his later work in the 80s, he had such an interesting sound on the first few albums.
For Disillusion, I highly recommend the original Japanese recording.
Amazing stuff - I love Takasaki😎❤️
Akira is a guitar GOD!!!! Thank you so much for doing this video!
August 2014 i see Loudness live in Finland Oulu.. badass. When i was a kid my sister lives in Sweden and she send me a C-cassette and that tape was a band called Bow Wow (Japanese rock band formed in 1975) very good band and the guitar player name was Kyoji Yamamoto, and he is really good too ;) Keep on rock'n Dave!
Your style is growing on me. I used to want "less talk, more rock" but when discussing unheralded or overlooked musicians, it's very cool and interesting. Thanks for the lesson AND the insight.
Scary how you nail my wishlist. I bought the vinyl of Disillusion in 84 after hearing Exploder going into Dream Fantasy at a friends house. My little guiarists head was melted, ha ha. To catch up, I also bought their double live Live-Loud-Alive as a live best of. Still have 'em. Their records up to (+including) Soldier Of Fortune are stellar.
Loudness was one of my favorite bands back in the day!
I actually prefer a lot of their early stuff Most of which was sung in Japanese Look up Road Racer and In The Mirror astonishing stuff for the time Also Akita had a Solo album called Tusk of Jaguar excellent also I know you mentioned the obvious EVH influence but I also heard a lot of Blackmore Gary Moore And Schenker in his playing as well Akira was an absolute Monster at this Time This was Pre Malmsteen you have to remember I used to enjoy his work quite a bit and I applaud you for covering him He’s a tragically underrated Guitar Hero thanks again love your channel
First of all great lesson and essential history about Akira for newcomers. Saw loudness on the Disillusion tour in a small London Pub called The Fulham Greyhound, loud, mind blowing performance that got me hooked.I then tracked down the first 3 albums and the, then current album Disillusion. He used ESP, Random Star Guitars which had a sort of Danelectro head stock in the early days and then went onto Killer Guitars which he still uses. The best early footage is 'Live Aloud' excellent quality and the solo section is remarkable. On his solo album he even does tapping on a Violin which is just great and he was only 18. Total wizard and a Lord of the Strings.
I may be alone here... But the Soldier of Fortune album is my absolute fav! Still listen to it all the time...
That is really a great album. I think Thunder in the East is their BEAST album, then Hurricane Eyes, but Soldiers of Fortune mind be just ahead of Lightning Strikes and Jealousy.
Believe me be happy with that beautiful sweet touch you have. You’d be 1 of the 5 heroes if it was 1980!! And Nuno ROCKS!!
CHEERS
I've been playing for years just learning songs and playing them in bars as cover songs. Learn-play-forget, learn-play-forget. These vids you are putting out have inspired me to go back and enjoy practicing the way I used to. To revisit all my old books, VHS and magazine articles, sit down and fight with a lick until I get it. Thanks mate!
Outstanding lesson as usual, but honestly I just want to put my guitar down, hang out and talk about 80's metal with you. Well done.
AGREED!!!!
same feeling !
Great insight as always Hoosier Daddy...
Greg Howe...love his funky phrasing...very unique imho👍🏼🤘🏼🎸🎵
Thank you so much for taking the time to make this video. You are truly a gifted and inspiring musician and teacher.
Saw Loudness open for Motley Crue in Sept, 1985 in Omaha.
They blew Crue off the stage.
Then saw them in Minneapolis in 2011 and met Akira and Masayoshi after the show, got a pick from Akira... super cool dude, and didn't mind talking to you if you wanted to talk about guitars and amps and stuff. I've been playing guitar since 1980, so all these players around that time were a big influence on my playing.
Akira is a master of the guitar! Exceptional guitarist.
Words of wisdom. Thank you. I totally dig the way you say the chords seems like most channels on UA-cam are saying frets and strings. You speak my language. That’s probably why it’s a goal to see all your videos. Good call Sir.👊
I think Akira is definetely in the top 10 most talented guitarists who ever lived
Super KILLER!!! Akira is one of my fav guitarist, I have a nice Loudness and Akira solo vinyl collection. On the album Disillusion the song Exploder ...I guess you can call it, his version of Eruption. Thanx Dave you keep topping your stuff!!! Awesome!!!
Most under-rated guitar player of the 80s.
Dude! That was an inspiring lesson. The way you integrated yourself into it....I could really feel your, as the Japanese call it, Ki キ
LOVE YOUR LNL, Dave! Akira's tapping riff in the solo of Rock n Roll Gypsy is pretty slick - thought you might cover that... maybe in a FUTURE LNL!
Thanks for another great lesson. Since you mentioned it in the video, maybe a lesson on how to play Mean Street. Also, as always, Harry Cody please.
I went to a concert in San Bernardino ,CA .with Stryper...TnT ...and Loudness back in 1985... \m/...!
I'm having a blast with your lessons . it's so cool to learn a few techniques from a player and if I want to dive deeper and really study their music I've had a good introduction to what they are about, very cool .
Awesome! I was hoping this one would be ready this morning! Thanks, David! LOUDNESS always to me sounded punchy! Punchy guitars, punchy vocals, punchy record production! Great stuff!!!
takes me back to 10th grade....keep em coming!
Cool. I was in Taiwan back in March for a buddy’s wedding. We had a jam session planned during the reception party. As we are at the music store picking up equipment I spied the same model of guitar that Akira Takasaki used up on the wall for sale. Same one you have in the thumbnail picture. It was hanging up near the ceiling, way out of reach. Otherwise I would’ve loved to have tried playing it to see what it was like. Really liked that Crazy Nights album when it was new. Thanks for the video.

remember picking up the SOF cd from the $2 bin at my local record store because nobody wanted it, mind blowing introduction to akira, their 1992 self-titled album is also crazy good and master of the highway is definitely one of their best songs
Wow David-you have been hitting it out of the park!
Thanks Joe!
: )
Awesome video!! It was hard to get their albums back in the day, especially the Japan only releases. Would love to see more like this.
Hi Dave
Another outstanding lesson! It would be great to see a Jason Becker, Marty Friedman, Tony MacAlpine, and Greg Howe lessons. I don't think I have overlooked any of these lessons on the channel. These players in addition to some of your previous lessons dominated guitar magazines etc. When I was very young. Thanks for the fantastic lessons and keep up the great work!
Hi David, the first couple days in " Rocktober " are so great lessons and much work to learn for me... THX :-):-):-):-)
Yeah man. Awesome. I have 3 star-body guitars so i was pleased to see u cover some Akira!!! Right on🤘😎👍🎸🖤
Definitely Akira is one of my fave guitar players. thanks.
How bout a Chord Play featuring Akiras style? Also one for Michael Schenker? Some bluesy fusion guitarists would be good for Chord Play.
Killer lesson! Glad to see the channel is growing.
Official request: Wolf Hoffmann of Accept..... Love your channel!!!
Akira! I think the tone on Thunder in the East rivals VH1. One of the best guitar tones ever recorded. Really love your channel man.
You read my mind!
Was just about to see if you'd do some Akira.
I love those early 80s import records... Sorta stopped after Lightning Strikes.
He has that Euro-Classical thematic approach of Blackmore and Schenker, mixed with the spontaneity of Gary Moore and Van Halen... Half worked out, half in the moment.
Check out those early records if haven't.
Dead End (Shambara, Ghost of Romance) is another killer band I discovered from Japan. More polished than Loudness.
Guitarist - Yuji Adachi is more controlled and not as much of a technician but has a slightly similar thematic Schenker approach, with some Gary Moore.
Quite a few killer players from Japan.
He (and Loudness) also had these Dixie Dregs, Rush and Jan Hammer (Schon & Hammer?) references.
His first solo record is a trip.

Fantastic lesson and playing!
Great job, used to cover "let it go" when I was young
You are a great teacher! I appreciate your helpful lessons.
Beyond Awesome, he killed on Thunder in the East!!
Thank you for this video, Akira is #1!!!!
I LOVE Loudness. Exploder is half Eruption and half Gary Moore's End of the World solo.
I saw them in 2011 or 12 in Portland. They were FANTASTIC! Every bit as good as 37 years ago when they first toured the States. Very convincing, even as middle aged guys👍🤔
Thanks for making this.
Akira is dope. Thunder in the East is perfection. Simply perfection. Their best albums are Thunder in the East, Lightning Strikes, Hurricane Eyes, Jealousy, and Soldiers of Fortune. It is really cool you are doing him. Their work after this got weird. Then they really just started getting out there and lost me. I don't care for them any more really. But the albums I listed, they were awesome!
Great licks,thank you David!
Thank you for this lesson! I particularly loved the final comments!! You are totally inspiring. I've recently been in an Akira Takasaki mode, and I too have tried my hand on some of his music these past days. I have found him extremely creative and different. Please add more content from him. Cheers!
Thanks for another awesome lesson! Dig the sweeping and tapping licks.
Have a signed Killer guitar by the man himself. The same one he used on the LOUDNESS 92 Tour. You should check out that record man. Riffs for Days. "Racing the Wind" is brilliant.
The way you talk about the artists and players is awesome, the backstories are really interesting. I think it would be helpful to include tabs, but then it also encourages me to really listen and do a bit of ear training and where necessary slow the video down, so that's good too, rather than just read it, play it and swiftly forget it. Absolutely love your channel, it has so much to offer!
Now we need Hary K. Cody from Shotgun Messiah and I’m a happier cookie.
Love me some AT! Japan's greatest export. Soldier Of Fortune is a great album.
Akira plays amazing chord/melody progression
Thanks for pointing out the alternate shape for the first lick. I've got big hands and trying to squeeze my fingers together to play that in the "original" way is nearly impossible so the string-skipping is my route. Cheers.
Also could I suggest some licks by. Brandon Ellis. He's one of my absolute favorite young shredders. He embodies the 80's shred. Brilliant young player.
One of my favorite players at the moment. Perfect mix of melody, phrasing, and technique. Plus, his vibrato is absolutely killer!
The tapping around 14:20 reminded me of Vito Bratta's instrumental piece that plays before "Til Death Do Us Part".
Akita is awesome! Can you PLEASE do a series on Mick Mars? That guy is super underrated!
Their early stuff is more like Rush and Deep Purple. Also look at EZO and Anthem, the studio sessions. INCREDIBLE. Akira has said his tapping style is intended to be more rythmic rather than melodic. He's a chameleon that absorbs all styles and lets them flow out in his own voice. He's more like Richie Blackmore than EVH and MUCH more prolific. He's constantly recording for the gaming industry, other Japanese bands, etc
Killer video dude, as always. I think Loudness is a really underrated band!
And by the way there's a video on youtube titled "Tracii Guns Soloing" I think it would be a killer 3 for all video, just a suggestion
Oh and I love how you just busted out Romanza there! Definitely one of the pieces I had to learn from my degree. Being a guitarist, of course if you go to university and not a more jazz oriented approach type of school you're playing classical guitar!
Great lesson Dave I never dissected his playing skills either but he did have some really cool licks of his own. 👍🤘
Disillusion, Law of Devil's land are his stand out records IMo. great albums. amazing underrated guitarist.
WRIF in Detroit debuted " crazy nights " on Monday Night Metal. Two days later I went got the album. Akira ain't no joke. no way out & heavy chains rules. Thanks for reviewing his style for us. Hey, how about some Wolf Hoffman ?
Fellow Detroiter
Another GREAT video, gettin' some interesting ideas, and Akira T. Was an awesome player(still is l imagine) thanks for sharing 😎🍺🍀🍺👍✨
Fantastic licks lesson. And when you say the tapping in Soldier of Fortune is crazy, you’re not kidding. That album got short changed, maybe because they replaced their singer with Mike Vescera at the record companies recommendation.
Fantastic !lesson , I recall I bought an early Loudness album with Explorer on it ....how cool it was , Akira also wrote some brilliant riffs . Really pleased to see the subscribers are increasing ....What about featuring Adrian Vandenberg(Great work on Whitesnake's Slip of the Tongue as well as his own material - Chordplay maybe ???) all the best.
Thanks Richard!
I'll see what I can do with that request for some Vandenberg too!
I always liked his solo stuff too - 'Friday Night' and 'Welcome to the Club' were great songs.
: )
Tapping solo on intro Shadow of war , It's his masterpiece tapping .I never heard tapping sound like that before. It had influenced Japanese tradition music . He made it before Marty.
SOF is freaking RAD! On the prowl was excellent too!
There must be some sort of a collective 80's guitar overmind that's looming over all your viewers!
I thought nobody knew or would remember Ronni Le Tekrø or Akira Takasaki in USA. I mean, sure some may remember their catch band name like TNT & Loudness but remember their foreign guitarists' name? Well, I am constantly surprised by contents you're adding to your channel.
Got to see Loudness sometime back in '89 or '90 while Mike Vescera was with them (before he went onto join Yngwie).
BTW, I think his tapped version of Romance was in 8186 live album, at least I remember watching it over & over on my Beta video cassette trying to figure out how in the world he was playing the tune by tapping (it may have been one of those things only included in the video & not on LP/CD). And having left hand over the neck is to mute strings out, as you pointed out, but I think it's mostly for shows except on certain instances when he climbs up the neck as he does in the final bit of "Rock 'n' Roll Gypsy" solo where it actually is easier to play over the neck vs. normal. Back when I was in H.S., it was like a rite of passage to play at least 1 Loudness tune...and maybe White Lion's "Wait."
Thanks for digging up all these gems from the times of guitar heroes I have just about forgotten for decades now. Maybe you'll talk about Michael Lee Firkins or Chris Impelliteri next! Oh, I know, how about Alex Skolnick during his Testament era?
Thats only because the best metal music and guitar players came out of that genere everything after 92 was pure shit...with the exception of a handful of bands Cry Of Love, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains and thats pretty much it. Late night sessions to much talk play the licks then explain a bit to much talk.
Dude I saw Loudness open for Motley Crue in 1985!! I went to Japan in 1989 at 17 years old and bought the 88 album Jealousy!! It was mostly Japanese, but had some English mixed in. I LOVED Thunder in the East so much. I think it is a perfect album. All their albums from Thunder to Soldiers are amazing. Soldiers of Fortune was the last really excellent album. Mike Vescera's second album with Loudness, 'On the Prowl' was just not that good. A couple listenable songs.
As far as TNT, I came on board with Tell No Tales and quickly bought Knights of the New Thunder and have been hooked since. Tony Harnell will always be their singer. Ronnie's 'machine gun' technique will be his calling card. Check out the band Pretty Maids and Bonfire. There are so many.
@@jrgilbert Oh man, Pretty Maids was great! Last tune I heard from them was called "Mother of All Lies" which I thought was quite good... maybe even more so than at their prime "Future World"
@@KyunghweeChoi Pretty Maids kept making great albums really. Sadly Ronnie Atkins, the singer, just recently posted he had lung cancer.
@@KyunghweeChoi Oh and Future World was so awesome! That sing just freaking rocks. Epitomizes late 80s rock. Loved it.
Akira Rules!!! And so does this cool guy- awesome video.
In before "Soldier of Fortune" solo?
Very cool stuff.
I love Akira Takasaki
The tapping phrase is indicative of He-Man woman hater as to the intro. Maybe its me as I hear similarities. In 83 I was playing with my He Man dolls which I love to this day. ") Good riffs and good memories. Nuno Bettencourt.
Would love to hear a Reb Beach lesson!
Late Night Lessons does have one,
m.ua-cam.com/video/0TXQd1Ede_8/v-deo.html
Just dig through the current library on LNL and you'll soon find it's loaded with gems, with more to come👍
Thanks again Patrick!
You're on the ball!
: )
Dude.... this is awesome.... I spy Highway To Hell. Angus Young is the whole reason I ever picked up a guitar to ever start with.
If you can get your hands on the Eurobounds live album you'll find some great pro recordings from the early Loudness era
Thank you for this! Salute!
Loudness rules dude. Thank you for this video :D
