Suzuki RMX450z/RMZ450 Fuel Pump Pressure and Flow Test

  • After changing the fuel filter in my 2017 RMX450z last month, I was curious as to exactly how my fuel pump was performing. This bike runs good about 95% of the time but can flame out and usually at the wrong time. It can make it a real hand full in tight woods/canyon riding. Flame out in the wrong spot and its abandon ship... Everyone over the side...
The fuel pump tests seem in line with the manual specifications but maybe has a little too much pressure. I've checked the TPS (throttle position sensor) voltage and it was set to the manual spec. I might need to double check those settings again. I know low pressure can cause poor motor running but didn't see anything in the manual diagnostic section about slightly high fuel pressure.
    Feel free to comment.

When solving the flame out issue, please make video about it.
    Cheers from Sweden

Test results would be in the 'normal' range. I would attribute the slightly high pressure to the gauge accuracy. You do not have a fueling problem if you are experiencing issues when riding, unless there is an electrical intermittent that stops the power to your fuel pump.

Flameout issue gets worse after a long stretch in tight woods where I can't really clean out the bike with a long straight. It doesnt overheat but seems to run a little hotter in these conditions.

Maby just too lean in the mapping.
I think those ECUs are impossible to remap because they are locked because EPA compliance

Its got a Vortex ECU so it runs well but yeah the stock ECU was crap and too lean once you removed the throttle stop and snorkel from the airbox and added a FMF muffler.

But if it pumps "to much" does that matter ?
Its the injector that are controlling how much and when ?
Too little pressure i think is more of a problem?

It might make the fuel mix too rich. The fuel pump regulator is easy to get to and change. I have changed the fuel pump filter and have a source for those. Still looking for a source for the fuel pump regulator for this Keihin fuel pump. Fuel pump filter change here : ua-cam.com/video/iZTtr04X8w0/v-deo.htmlsi=wIKQQ8ZIgCMzUrnz

Maybe its time for the throttle body and injector to get a good cleaning.

Swap to stock ecu and see if problem clears up

Stock ecu is bad. The stocker has a tune meant for the EPA. Suzuki got fined big time when the RMX came out in 2010 because it had a CARB tune to get a green sticker with a throttle stop, airbox snorkel, and very restrictive muffler, but also had a performance map accessed by adding a dongle. The EPA got pissed and fined Suzuki big time and forced a recall because Suzuki didn't declare this performance map. My stock 2017 ecu was locked off and only has the green sticker tune. You had about 25 hp on a 450. If you pulled these stock restrictions then the engine ran hot and lean. Most rmx riders would buy a Jd Jetting/dobeck piggyback fuel controller to add more fuel to the mix. I ran one of these units for a while till I found a good deal on a vortex ecu.

@@burstcasinodid the tool come with the connector for direct fit on the pump , or did you need a extra connector to get it on the plastic tube from the pump?
Last question, won't bother you anymore 👍
