    The “off road jack” is actually an original equipment car bumper jack because it’s made of stamp forged steel. Some of the cars that had them had a slot at each bumper attachment point for the jack to hook into. Some had a “shoe” that would grab under a bumper. Widowmaker jacks for more than one reason.

    • @tonyv8925

    There are 4 types of cannon balls, judging from the weight like the cop said it is most likely round shot. Which is a solid iron ball, the type that explode on impact or above enemy lines in carcass shot. It has breaks/grooves in the ball, it works like a frag grenade showering the enemies in shrapnel.

      I was just wondering how it ended up in a river in Racine? The war of 1812 didn’t make it there nor did the Civil War. Maybe a naval bombardment of the Natives?
      A cannonball was found not far from my house recently and was linked to a British Naval bombardment of our local Māori People. Awesome find

    • @broadstken
      @broadstken 2 роки тому +5

      @@ytzpilot Odds are it's not a cannonball. It's more likely a mill ball used to crush grain or coal or a shotput. Without photos of it cleaned up along with an accurate weight and measurement we'll never know. If it is actually a cannonball, the most likely explanation is someone's family discovered it after they died, thought it was explosive and threw it in the river. Or a story along that line anyway.... There's always a possibility that it could be from the Blackhawk war, but again we'd need to know all the details about the ball to determine what cannon would have fired it and get an idea of the era it would be from

  • @BocageTiger
    @BocageTiger 2 роки тому +2

    Great video. Too bad the Police Officer missed completely on the Cannonball. There were Solid Shot; which were made of Iron and there there were Spherical Shot; which were made of iron and were hollow. They were filled with Black-powder; no "Nitroglycerine" was employed during the American Civil War. A Solid shot was just that, solid. The spherical shot was filled with Black powder and either small iron balls or lead balls. Therese were held in place with pitch (Tar). There were wooden and zinc fuses that were screwed into the hole on the hollow spherical ball. The fuse would be set to ignite in flight based on the gunner setting the fuse time. The act of the cannon being fired would ignite the fuse in the ball. When it burned down internally, the ember would ignite the powder in the ball, causing it to explode and break apart; sending the shell and its' contents in all directions. It is akin to a modern fragment grenade. At no time was Nitroglycerine used.

    Cannonballs are usually just round balls of metal shot out of the cannon with a gunpowder charge which is behind the ball. There is usually no explosive inside the cannonball but on rare occassions they hollowed out the ball and used gunpowder and nitroglycerin for exploding on impact.

    • @JimDean002
      @JimDean002 2 роки тому +1

      Some of them do have charges inside. Look for a bump or protrusion. Friend of mine bought one at an estate sale and got at home before her husband law enforcement officer saw it sitting on the dining room table and realized that it had a charge in it

      Jim Dean is correct and today live cannonballs are still found. You can ID a live one by the round brass fuse that is screwed into the cannonball. I've found a solid shot like the one the lady in the video found. Last year a man and woman found a live Civil War artillery round walking along our Fort Fisher Beach.. Chances are it could be a mill ball, steel balls used in various milling operations even use them today to knock concrete out of mixing trucks. Also they didn’t have nitro back then it was simple black powder with a fuse that was lit as the flames of the charge expelled it from the muzzle. Watch the chigg on UA-cam he finds and goes over cannon balls pretty well and talks about how they are made and how dangerous they can be or not be .

In the last days of the war the Nazis were handing out machineguns, panzerfausts and crates of ammo and grenades, so the civilians could resist the Allies. Some of these stayed in closets and attics, the rest went into the water.

    generally cannon balls are just that, big heavy metal balls, some were explosive, most were solid iron balls designed to bludgeon their way through enemy defences

    It would be nice if cops like that got involved in magnet fishing on their days off. If possible. Clean their town and environment at once.

    You should have given the cops your Amazon link so they could buy their own magnets through you. I'm a new subscribe. Great finds. From Orange Park FL.

    Off road jack? That's the exact jack they used on late '60-70's cars. It'a bumper jack. There might be a base plate in there for it.

    If a cannon ball is filled with explosive they have a metal "cork" on them so it's easy to tell
