      To give you a slight understanding: in this riff (riffs are just cool outstanding guitar parts in a song) you can either: play each string on its own, so you only get the tone from that string (the easy way) OR you can play all strings at once, but mute the ones you don't want to hear (difficult). To mute a string you just have touch it with your skin a bit, but not enough to press it down because then it would make a sound. Doesn't sound too complicated in theory, in praxis it's lots of finger acrobatics

    This strumming technique is used in a lot of Frusciante’s work with RHCP. I’d argue this song is a great way to practice it because it is relatively easy. Interesting take, but I’d have to say Snow is much more difficult

    • @mjrausch
      @mjrausch 2 роки тому +85

      Agreed. The speed and intricacy of the hammer-on and pull-offs are much harder in “Snow” for me. Being a long time RHCP listener and playing along with their work as I learned, “Can’t Stop” is not easy either, but comes more naturally for me.

    It is indeed a really hard riff to play because both the left and right hand are very advanced. The left in terms of muting. The right in terms of rhythm. There’s still some ways to go with both here like you said.
    But one thing you can fix right away: he uses the bridge pickup not the neck.
    A small thing: In the bit where you say “you’re probably playing it like this”, you played an extra bass note when in your tab above - which is correct - it does’t include it. But when you play your best effort the amount of bass notes is correct again.
    The main thing though is there are a lot of muted strums and John hits all six strings constantly. Once you get that, you’ll get a lot closer to the riff.

    Trickiest part of can’t stop for beginners is precise muting with the left hand. Learned it when I was in ~8th grade and the style fascinated me. Mastering can’t stop will open up a lot of possibilities for applying the same technique to Hendrix, SRV, and any funk and funk rock.

    Yoo! Great job dude, sounding dope. You mentioned you're not fully happy with how you're playing it right now, to my ear you're missing a few elements so here you go!
    First things first, the bass notes are being fretted slightly differently, the first E is correct, then the following D is being played as an open string and the E+A are being muted with the thumb which is why it sounds so slinky on the recording, following that the bass notes on the E are being held with the thumb over the top.
    Secondly, the right hand should be hitting every single string every time, even the single low E notes, the attack is coming from a really loose wrist and arm coupled with gravity, instead of playing tightly in a box around the strings you wanna be coming up and down with the picking hand pretty much the entire width of the guitar body, so when you're downstroking gravity is taking part (It's waay easier to play this way if you're standing)
    The last missing ingredient is when you do the ascending 7>9's every second one has an upstroke sitting in-between the two which really brings out the funk
    Keep on rockin' 😄
