  • Rachel, David and Johanna head to Leadville, Colorado for a three day training camp while Enzo is left sidelined with an injury. This camp will expose the three novice cyclists to the thin air at elevation as they ride sections of the actual race course over the weekend. With only 6 weeks until race day this camp will be a wake up call for all three riders.

    The mental challenge is clearly the toughest. I'm rooting so hard for David. He's got the mental toughness, just needs the confidence to go with it.

    Great to see more about the tech behind the fitness tests and fittings. Kinda surprised they didn’t do the fittings when they received their bikes and Wahoo trainers.

      As much crashing as they're doing, maybe some knee and elbow pads for the downhills too, getting constantly cut up and banged up doesn't help their training.

    I thought for an FTP test you're not supposed to stand up at all just seated only?

    • @ilanpi
      @ilanpi Рік тому +1

      You can stand up for short periods, but prolonged periods out of the saddle will lower the FTP estimate as it requires more energy for most people, unless you're a very lightweight climber.

    This seems like a huge gap to cover from current fitness to “required fitness to have a good time” for this event for some of these athletes. It’s cool to see them overcome, but seems like setting them up for inability to be sustainable.

    More of a comment for the production and post-production crew, but whatever warp stabilization they're doing in post gives a weird Jello effect in the background at times which gets a bit distracting. Looking in the reflection of the guy's glasses the operator is handholding the camera so it's not some half-baked GoPro footage, so maybe in the future they should try using a gimbal or have a camera rig with better IBIS so you're not having to work out the movement with software after it was recorded.

    I’ll tell you what really bothers me about this whole endeavor.
    The creators of this program seem more concerned about product placement than the safety of these amateurs riders.
    While each rider was all fitted out with fancy cloths, bikes and helmets, not a one had elbow or knee protection.
    The woman who crashed ( and suffered a concussion ) bashed up and gashed her elbow and forearm!
    The “Pro’s” hosting this program should have insisted on them wearing this most basic of protection!
    It is unconscionable!

      None of the people needed more than a helmet and a good attitude both of which they had. Ryan wouldn't let them risk there safety knowing Ryan neither would Alexy both who are incredibly kind and honest people.

    This year's series is slightly less embarrassing than last year's. There are estimates of Leadville finish times as a function of FTP/body weight, and most of these people do not seem close to having an under 13 hour finishing time, which is estimated to be in the range of 3 Watts/kg. It appears that most of them need to lose somewhere between 50 to 100lbs. Since these people have not been endurance athletes, 6 months is insufficient to increase FTP to an achievable level and lose weight to an achievable level. Even worse, you've chosen a climbing course where power/weight ratio is the most important factor. At least, this year you went to Kansas which has significantly less climbing. Apart from power to weight ratio, a significant time reduction can be had by drafting on the long flat sections, which these beginners are unable to do, as they do not have sufficient experience riding close together in groups The most egregious aspect of this series is that it places beginners in genuine jeopardy with dangerous descents performed when totally tired. For me personally, a much more inspiring series was Apolo Ohno finishing his first Ironman in Hawaii and in under 9 hours, which is a really good time.

      I agree! The show makes for drama and great TV, but sets their contestants up for failure. Maybe a two year training program to include weight loss and maybe sleeping in an altitude tent to aclimate to the thin air would allow them to be successful.

      Is it really about finishing or just pushing them wayyyy out of their comfort zone and encouraging them to do their best

    • @ilanpi
      @ilanpi Рік тому +2

      @@shellyg8617 It's about taking sedentary unathletic people and enabling their unrealistic expectations about participation in one of the hardest endurance events. They get little benefit, as they endure much pain and suffering while being unable to accomplish what thousands of cyclists have been able to do after long periods of preparation: the Internet has numerous resources to prepare riders for Leadville, and I feel that this series is a snub to those who have correctly prepared and finished the race. Moreover, the participants in these series have unknowingly put themselves in danger of serious injury due to their lack of skill in dealing with the inherent risks of this race. Regarding the fact that the majority of the participants have too much body weight to have any kind of chance of completing Leadville, I point out that cycling is a very rare sporting activity in that there is a discipline for pretty much every body type. In particular, there are a number of track cyclists who are more than 50lbs overweight and who perform fairly well in amateur and masters racing, since events are short and there is no climbing. This might have been an achievable alternative for these participants. As an analogy, the misplacement of these participants in the context of Leadville is like taking Tour de France climbers and giving them 6 months preparation to play in the National Football League.
