I'll trust the people that land Falcons routinely almost once a week at this point over all of these Aeronautical Engineers in this comment section. An engine didn't ignite. This is similar to their struggles at first with the Falcon program and now look at that program, they can land a rocket coming out of low earth orbit on a tiny platform in the middle of the ocean.

It looks like one engine spluttered and failed to start properly, meaning SN9 didn't have enough thrust to slow down, and didn't have enough engine gimbal to correct its attitude and rotation. If I had to guess based on the colour of the flame, it could have been a lack of oxidizer caused by low tank pressure or a plumbing error; SN8 also suffered low tank pressure which led to engine out on landing. We'll likely get official information soon once the Starship team have analysed the telemetry.

It did what it was supposed to do; most of it worked, and a problem was identified. It flew beautifully right back to the launch site, with the aero surfaces doing their job really well. Only one engine ignited for the flip and landing, the second didn't restart. It flipped to vertical, but then kept going nosing over. WIth only one engine there wasn't enough thrust to make a controlled landing. They will get there, one flight at a time.

@O R the maneuver is likely to be extreme on different bodies as there is simply less deacceleration and less total speed, meaning there is much more time to maneuver the vehicle. I think the move is intended for Earth and reentry, but I doubt it will go so far as to exceed human G limits. Its safer for vehicle and crew to stay within 5 to 10 Gs for short maneuvers, which is uncomfortable but totally within the ranges for short exposure and space travel.

Armchair scientist here: I would like to have seen the situation where SN8 & 9 would have turned vertical maybe a minute sooner and started the engines at that point, giving more time to right itself, apply the right thrust etc. so as not to crash. (I did warn you "Armchair scientist here" :-)

THIS. You don't suicide burn with crew on board. SN-8 could have been saved if they had fired the Raptors 5 seconds earlier. Plus by firing too late, they are not allowing the gimbaling to zero out. Instead engine #2 fired towards engine #1 and killed it due to "frantic gimbaling"

It looked as if the landing burn began too late and as a result it failed to do anything that could've allowed it to land properly.
I think they need to begin the landing burn 1-2 km early so as to sufficiently slow the vehicle down and also to bring it into the vertical position to land.

He could just unbuckle, look out the window and correct out of a death spin manually like a year 2050 super computer and land on the moon without a landing pad and then get out walk around and get back in and blast off again to meet up with another vehicle orbiting the moon faster than a bullet and then come back to Earth in the 1860s.
