- I put together a great retro PC setup that allows me to play DOS, Win98, and XP games from the late 80s to the early 2000s.
Pentium III 1GHZ
512mb RAM
Voodoo3 2000 PCI
Sound Blaster Live
Viewsonic G225F 21 inch CRT
HP Keyboard
Dell Mouse
Wingman Extreme Joystick
Bose Speakers
#retropc #vintagepc #3dfx #win98
Old school beast
0:07 You saying it's not the most Aesthetically pleasing system.
Brother you have THE MOST Aesthetically pleasing system. the perfect early 2000s setup. topped with the CRT Monitor. Chefs kiss ❤
Thanks!
that crt is a beauty
Oooh Tachyon: The Fringe! I wish they still made games like that!
Really nice retro PC. Pentium 3 is the CPU i remember most fondly when thinking back. I had a 600mhz slot 1 P3. A Compaq PC with voodoo3 built into the motherboard somehow. But lacking AGP port.
man, that's one nice monitor right there
i grew up with wolfen stein on mac i had the pc version to and i got the original cd rom and epic pinball to i kept my child hood pcs
Nice, i built mine nearly three years ago with a very similar system. Same Pentium3 with 512MB RAM, Same Sound Blaster Live! but different GPU GeForce FX 5200
It reminds me of my childhood dell xp machine but inverse color
that is the coolest setup in my opinion
Thanks toolman!
Using Alcohol 120% Retro Edition is what I do any more for myself on my personal builds. No sense waisting tons of disks. It also fixes a lot of copy protection on the fly.
nice i still have voodoo 3 2000
Ah yes. I love small tech youtubers. I get so tired of Linus and LGR. Google has been recommending the small guys lately, so that's good. Subbed and thumbs up.
Thanks for the sub
this is a super pc i love it !!!!!!!!!!!
i have a frankenstein as well, pentium 4 1.8 ghz with geforce fx 5500. Dualbooting xp and ms dos- not win98, just plain ms dos 6.22. It covers a lot of games as well, it just works
So weird to see those DOS games running on such a giant display
It's pretty cool, but there is a certain charm to playing on a 15 or 17 inch as well.
I really liked this video. It was very straightforward, simplistic and satisfying to watch. The feeling of nostalgia this video gives as well is awesome. I remember always playing Soldier of Fortune in 2002 and the mention of 15 inch crts bring back strong memories. Going to those computer stores looking at computers in the 90s and even the late 80s as a kid with my parents. There were also awesome showcases of consoles like the SEGA Genesis and lightguns and arcades. Thx for this video you earned a subscriber.
Well thank you very much for such positive feedback and I appreciate the sub!
im proud of you man great work and heart you put on.
this feels like my current setup just its modern, i use a LG 32 inch tv, an LG minicomponent with (15 speakers recycled) and my PC with like 3 years of hardware diference and in some cases more because i was buyng each component at a time when i got the bread to buy it, a logitech k120 12 year old keyboard and a chinse mouse its increadible i started with the ram buying 1 stick xpg d41 16 gb in 2018 and the last week i got mi pc full running.
you can achive what you want in life if you are constant and belive in yourself definitely.
the best of the vibes for you champ.
That’s awesome dude
Unreal was one of my favorite games of the genre. I loved being able to do the flyby of the castle and check my FPS. :) I loved tweaking and fiddling back in the old days. :) I need to build myself an older PC... because using WINE and DOSBOX is fun, but not nearly as much as the real HW. :)
Great PC, I also have a retro PC which is a Pentium III 1000mhz with a 3dfx Voodoo 3 3000 card.
Nice choice! AGP I'm guessing?
@@alwaysobsolete Yes it is an AGP card. I also attached a fan on the metal cooler to keep the voodoo cooler.
It's good enough - that you can cover (sort of) a very big span of gaming, at a time when PC hardware was exponential. I built multiple retro systems to cover from early 90's DOS games like Dune 2 and The Legacy, right through to early 2000's like Doom 3, F.E.A.R and Dawn Of War. That was five systems, which took me ages to source and build and needed plenty of storage.
DOSbox Staging is doing a great job these days of covering everything from the 80's right through to the late 90's on any modern system. But ideally, I'd say you just need a fast SS7 system, like a K6-2 / K6-3 / WinChip2B machine with a VooDoo - then a Core2Duo system with a Geforce 6800 series / Radeon X800 series card for the Windows XP stuff.
I was going to do a dual boot, but I wanted a little higher level hardware for XP, so I'm doing a separate Windows 98SE PC that will be hooked together with a KVM. I found a 17" new-in-the-box EMachine flat screen CRT. I finished my XP box and love it, the Win98 is going to be built with the original hardware that I built my first PC in 1998 with. I have everything but the case. It will have a Voodoo as well...the 16MB Voodo Banshee. 😁
Good job on your setup.
Nice system!
This takes me back! My old viewsonic monitor! Such a beast (in every sense lol). Until today all my monitors are of that brand, never dissapointed. If you're into strategy or 4x games you might like Fragile Allegiance. The interface may seem overwhelming at first but It's such a gem of a game. Love the videos! 👍
I'll check it out!
I would definitely be listening to mp3s on Winamp and playing
I actually have that on the desktop..original skin and all
@@alwaysobsoletewow! root user! Perfect!
Might be a good idea to move the sound card down a slot to give the Voodoo 3 more air flow and leave the slot it came from open for air to come into the case. Also add a small fan?
My main retro machine
Gigabyte GA-586BX
Pentium II 350
128 MB PC100 SDRAM
3Dfx Voodoo 3 2000 AGP
ESS Audiodrive ES1868F
3Com 3C905B-TX
WD Caviar 60GB ATA
LG DVD-ROM CD-RW combo drive
Sony 3.5 Floppy Drive
Windows 98 Second Edition
It seems to handle many games from DOS to the late 90s 3d win9x games
¡Very nice setup! That monitor is perfect. I've seen you're thinking about buying a joystick. I usually use a Snes pad connected to parallel port. There is a driver for using under Windows as a regular joystick and there's a program called sneskey so you can map the keyboard key you want to a button, so even games that are not compatible with joystick works with the method.
¡Great video!

Dig this walkthrough of your setup. Videos like this and the ones on LGR definitely whet the appetite for retro gaming and make me want to consider doing a build, myself, though space is an issue. Till I can figure that out, I'll vicariously enjoy these trips down memory lane. Thanks again, and I've subscribed!
Thanks! Also Phil's Computer lab is amazing for this kinda thing if you haven't already checked out his channel.
ngl those bose speakers were so good tho
Very nice retro PC. Like! I noticed that your V3 2000 has 6ns (166 mhz) memory, the same one is used on the V3 3000. Your card most probably is capable of running without problems at a maximum 175-185 mhz.
Thanks for the info!
my voodoo 3 3000s have 5.5ns memory :-)
@@wowitsshit9734 that’s really nice, the 5.5 ns memory being made for 183 mhz, the same as the one used on the Voodoo 3 3500. The 5.5 ns memory usually works perfectly up to 200-210 mhz.
@@3dfxvoodoocards6 yeah maybe, but i think my pci one needs more voltage, it gets artifacts past 185mhz, i do not want to volt mod them
@@wowitsshit9734 my V3 3000 with 6ns memory runs 100% stable at a maximum 187 mhz without additional cooling and at 193-194 mhz with a fan. But I keep it at default frequency.
Sweet, my 98 rig has a Voodoo5 5500, a 1.4ghz Pentium 3, an Asus P3C-E with 512mb of RDRAM at 800mhz and a Sound Blaster AWE64 Gold and an Audigy 2. Also you mentioned that Morrowind doesn't support 3dfx cards, it runs on my 5500 (and my 4500 too) but the game is kinda sluggish so yeah.
Wow awesome setup you have! Yeah I was getting an error while trying to load up Morrowind and some of the documentation I was finding suggested 3dfx wasn't supported but you're right it looks like the 4 and 5 are playable.
Nice set up!
Thanks!
Nice 👍I have a old Sony Viao Pentium 4 HT in my retro setup running XP and DosBox for dos/win3x. No CRT... yet, but I hope to find one someday along with Roland MT-32 and a SC 55/mk2 or 88, and a Model M keyboard.
My P4 has a ATI sapphire Redondon 3640 duo dvi 512mb version and a Sound Blaster Audigy SE
Wait are there Voodoo drivers/software for XP? Or is it using generic PnP?
Enjoy this video of your setup. Subbing!
Thanks for the sub!
There's software to down clock the CPU for this exact situation
Great video m8, can we see the inside ?
Are the Bose magnetically shielded?
Where did you get the parts from?
eBay :)
pentium 3 from 30 years ago, umh wtf? you meant 23
Yes Pentium 3 and Voodoo 3 are from '99 so more like 24 years. Some of the games I show are from much earlier (pre 1993) so I guess that's why I had 30 on my mind.
@@alwaysobsolete anyways that's a sick setup, congrats ☺️
@@Devilot91 thanks. It's been a few months since I posted this vid. Since then I've acquired a few more systems from different eras and I've been mixing some components around. It's been a blast.
It's crazy to think that now and days there is amd server CPUs that have more cache than your retro system has ram.
