Pentium MMX and AWE32 Build. So. Many. Options.
Переглядів 7862 місяці тому
In this video, I demonstrate my latest DOS PC Gaming Build. The Pentium MMX allows me to wield the SETMUL utility, slowing the system down to a 386 and everything in-between to play those pesky speed sensitive games. I also throw in a Voodoo 2 to give me versatility with still being able to tackle some heavy hitting early 3d windows games. I also install an AWE32 soundcard and demonstrate the a...

This machine is MINT. Checking out a very high end Dell XPS 630i. Shipped with Windows Vista originally, but we installed Windows XP Pro SP3 32-Bit and it runs great. Machine still had the factory peel on all of the brushed aluminum side panels. NVIDIA GeForce 8800GT 512MB, Core 2 Quad Q6600, 4GB of RAM, 1TB HDD. Makes for a fantastic retro gaming machine.

Wait hold up I didn't know they was a magical quest 3 for Snes...i played the original Magical Quest they were another version... Well am excited ❤️
Yes released in Japan
got it about a year ago for retro gaming, gtx 280 and q9650. it runs vista and 7, looks super cool, lights sync with music, runs cool after repasting, 4 hdd/ssd slots, and the pros end there. tried overclocking in the bios but of course it’s only possible with the 2007 lga775 processors. had to use nvidia tools to do an overclock i wasn’t the happiest with. wanted clocks of at least 3.5, could only manage 3.3. some games performed WAY below expectations and that’s because dell went out of their way to literally hardwire the motherboard to pci x8 opposed to literally every other pc with x16. i’m guessing they wanted others to buy the more expensive 730. some games reacted to it more differently than others. gta 4 took a huge hit. also tried 10 for the hell of it on a different ssd and blue screened every minute
Guy, Geforce FX 5500 64bits ? Why not Geforce FX 5500 128 bits? Is much better!!!
with such a High end CRT monitor like the viewsonic g220fb, running at 180hz and a 2k resolution, it really deserves a better mid 2000s computer in my opinion, like a high end XP era computer.
right, I just built a 2006-2008 era C2Q paired with an NEC Superbright, lovely
Those viewsonic CRT G series are pretty rare and expensive. since you have that monitor, if i were you, id make that whole setup blacked out, id personally use a cherry G84-4100LCMUS-2 and a black ps-2 mouse and an old black retro case like an ibm aptiva. just a thought though.
this might be a hot take but i was 10x the gamer i was playing FPS games on 4:3 before 720p/1080i gotta find a company that makes dedicated gaming monitors in 4:3
Had this old machine until 2015, my grandpa bought this back in 1993
8ms response? CRT killer how???
Looks great! I'm considering the S2134 from EIZO. Do you know if it handles DOS games at lower resolutions?
Voodoo 2 is expensive card 😮$200 each I should of held on to mine back in the day
I m looking for a game. His name i think Was "seed" or "seeds". A survival game
Need tetris the grand master on steamdeck
Somehow u feel Lumines should be mentioned....
Pity these monitors never went beyond 21 inch
the Pompeii track in 3dfx mode is always seen with a part of the black background... in your video you can see the whole part of the background up to the horizon. May I know if there is some sort of patch? did you do anything in particular to make the background part visible? Thank you.
I'll take a look. I'm thinking it's the voodoo patch with mmx
dreamcast is NEVER OBSELETE
i did snatch an Eizo FlexScan S2133 for 50 bucks on ebay im in heaven
good music choice
I had Voodoo 3 2000. I overclocked the GPU from 143 to 166MHz, so to 3000 series. It was easy. The 2000 was purely passively cooled. Small aluminum heatsink. I simply attached a regular fan to it, which I found in the drawer. Voodoo was 100% stable all these years.
i manage to find a cheap pc with a intel core 2 duo e 4600 wiht 2gb ram and 9500gt 1gb ,most games run fine but i think i need a better gpu,idk what to search for
0:41 I have that full tower ASUS case. I also have two mini version of it.
This is about the time I started building my own machines. I watch these videos with not an ounce of feeling nostalgic. I remember headaches and the urge to punch the monitor. I love how far these things have come. I can't for the life of me understand the desire to use such old tech now days.
Oh yeah and I edit out most of the little problems. In a weird way I enjoy the challenges.
I still have my first pentium based PC. When i first bought it it had a 133MHz pentium CPU, 16 MB Ram, S3 Virge DX video card (I can't remember what sound card it had) a pretty small HDD (but was under 1GB). It eventually got a 200MHz MMX CPU, 64MB ram, 3Dfx voodoo 3 2000, (can't remember what sound card i put into it).
Yeah, i would say that Trident card slows down the machine a bit, at all speed settings.
Nice build. I went with Voodoo 1 in my MMX build. I think the Voodoo 2 wouldn't be much better, as would be held back by the CPU
I still haven't gotten my hands on a voodoo 1 yet.
@alwaysobsolete and I haven't gotten my hands on a voodoo2. Too expensive! I got a good deal on Voodoo 1, as the bracket to mount to the PC was missing. I also got a good deal on a Voodoo 3500, as the heavy breakout lead had ripped out one of the support screws. Works fine though.
For AWE32 I recommend the soundfont "GeneralUser GS 1.35"; GeneralUser is a very good sountfont, and while the latest version is just a little too big to fit into the 28MB of RAM on that card, the older version 1.35 fits perfectly. It's what I use on my AWE32. Other good sountfonts for that card are "Chorium" and "Unison".
I don't think I have that one yet, I'll check it out for sure!
Cpuspd also adjusts for speed sensitive games, so it may also be worth trying that.
When others had Pentium MMX; I had Cyrix 166mhz. I had to find fixes from gaming magazine BBS hubs for some games like Screamer Rally(iirc). AMD K6-300 after that and of course AWE32 was so good!
Can you review a vga with tv encoder?

Ive been looking for an actual 90s alienware, they are absolutely impossible to find.
Yeah I wanted a case for this build. No luck.
@alwaysobsolete I found a blue 2005 alienware, that's the oldest one I could see anywhere.
Thanks for covering this entire list. I greatly enjoyed it! I never subscribed to PC Gamer back in the day and I'd often visit the magazine sections in stores to keep up to date. I completely missed out on that issue so who knew 25 years later I'd come across this.
Thanks! These were fun to make and it helped me learn how to edit videos and capture gameplay. And of course it was fun to install and get them working on actual hardware (for the most part).
Hehe, it's a real gem! I'm still using 2 Eizo S2100 on my main workstation as side monitors, in portrait mode. The main monitor has been upgraded several times but the Eizos still remain. Not used for gaming, but for viewing pdfs, working on excel, docs or just opening webpages. Real workhorses, I bought them used for peanuts about 10 years ago, used them daily and they are still going strong. As a matter of fact, I prefer working ok white background documents on them compared to my main 2k central monitor which has a LED backlight and is cooler no matter the settings. I've still got one as a spare, I guess I'll try some retro gaming. Master of Magic from 1994 with dosbox, yeah baby!!!! Thanks for the video!!!
Thanks! Yeah I'm actually using it more in a dual monitor setup for work. It is my right screen (left is wide) that I use for Excel and SAP Windows.
I wish they would give us the option to use program manager still
Very cool IBM. 👑
Plug a ps2 to it
That's $7100 in today's money :) Screamer Rally looked really chappy, are you sure it wasn't running in Software mode? There being no performance difference between Voodoo 2 SLI & the Matrox graphics is ... really weird. Something's off there.
Fun fact : in 1998, a ~200$ Dreamcast (Japan) had more graphical capabilities than this setup.
So weird to see those DOS games running on such a giant display
It's pretty cool, but there is a certain charm to playing on a 15 or 17 inch as well.
Should i get a snes or a n64 and why?
Get a SNES. Super Metroid
What do you do in a scenario if your motherboard does not have a cpu fan pin to connect to? And also, I'm curious if an ATX power supply adapter would work on your unit instead an AT power supply; additionally what are those back ports used for in that AT power supply? 🤷♂🤷♂
The cpu fan in this build connects to the PSU. The front power switch is directly connected to the PSU
Also I really haven't played around with ATX/AT adapters sorry.
“A full year in the 90s is equal to 10 years now…” So true!
The Voodoo 3 will also run Vice City very well on a Tualatin Pentium 3, better than a single core Acer netbook. Which I think is quite impressive. The problem is that it will only run on a Pentium 3 without crashing.
that crt is a beauty
The chair is on etsy for $500
I'm tempted...
I bought an XPS 625 new in 2009. It's nearly identical to this machine except it's the AMD variant. I also opted for the liquid cooling option. When I got mine, I think I ended up using the same HP keyboard too which is quite the coincidence! Anyhoo, those lights change color. You need to get the AlienFX software off Dell's support page. Just plug in the service tag number, and you should find it. If they took it down, I'm sure I have a copy somewhere!
That's cool that you can change the lighting. I will check it out thanks. I can't explain it but I love this keyboard, it feels so natural to me and I can type super fast.
the ai audio thing turning gunshots into voice sounds creeps me out so much
It is so creepy, it generates voices somehow
i just came across ur channel ur content is decent.. you can include more cinematic shots to make it even better bro😌
I will try that!
fx5200/5500 64bit is still pretty good at win98 era games and can also do nglide with a stronger CPU (over 2 ghz). Don't expect winXP era games to work flawless.
How to add the sound. I hooked up my ps3 to it.
Will have to split the audio from HDMI or use the optical out
