- How to Register your Key fog in a BMW Mini 06 R53
Put key in ignition turn the key to Position 1 ( ignition on but no engine start)
take the key out and press and hold Unlock and whilst holding unlock press the Lock Button 3 times
the Car should lock and than unlock if it has registered Ok.
Hi Scott thanks for the video, i have managed to successfully sync two keys to my mini after they disconnected for some reason. I get the doors lock and unlock to confirm however they still do not work and I have to put the key in the door. I find this strange because if the doors unlock/lock when calibrating you would think everything is working okay? Any ideas would be much appreciated! Many thanks.
Hi Jamie ,
your right It is a Strange one, from what I understand it appears to register when you are in the Car, which means the Key is transmitting Both Buttons and the Receiver in the MINI Rear View Mirror is able to pick the signal up when close by, however when out side of the car the lock & unlock does not work.
lets look at the Simple first
If the Keys have little charge then the signal will be weak and the receiver will not hear it when at a distance,
Try charging the keys, they use inductive coils to charge the batteries when in the Ignition & the engine is running, in my experience the batteries only last about 3 months without use so swapping keys regularly is a good habit to get into, You can also charge them from a Tooth brush changer (I used a Braun charger and placed the charger on top of a Key and left it over night.) I have heard of Others Using Mobile phone inductive chargers ,
Test this by Locking and unlocking whilst in the car and the key is near the rear View Mirror
Slightly More Complicated
BMW R51-53 cars have had a tendency to leak water Just above the rear view mirror ( due to factory windscreen seal installation issue) and water would drip from the Mirror in heavy rain (when not driving) , if this has happened then the receiver in the rear view mirror may have some corrosion or short circuited some contacts, this receiver board can be cleaned with a tooth brush to remove the dusty corrosion which may be short circuiting the board, see my other video on that. Worst cases
The Key Fob Batteries are done for and cannot hold a charge large enough to transmit over distance,
Some on you tube have replaced the batteries but I have no experience of this.
Scott Gollaglee thanks for your response mate, yea how you described the issue is exactly what's happening. I think it could be the water in the rear view mirror as it happened after I washed my car... I have also used silicone to seal the windscreen and trims to prevent further water entering the mirror.
I just find it strange how it's affecting both keys and if I can sync them successfully then why it's not working after I get out the car! I thought that would imply everything is working okay. (Obviously not)
I will try cleaning the circuit board and feedback! I really appreciate your response.
Just an update! I cleaned the stuff of the circuit board with a toothbrush and it all worked okay!! Thanks Scott!
Follow this simple 2-3 step video and program your key! Very simple and worked perfectly. Very good! Workes for my customers 2005 mini R54. Very satisfied I was able to program the key thanks to this video! Thank you sooo much!
Thanks Scott - this has just worked perfectly for me after I picked up a Cooper S R52 with what I thought was a dud spare. Much appreciated!
Thank you , that is the clearest explanation yet , tried a few times with other instructions without luck , all sorted now two working keys again!
A big thank you from the birth place of Mini. You are good.
Just tried this, didn't work on the first attempt, tried it 3 times then with the spare key and it worked, did both keys and now is all working as it should, try it a few times and try your spare key first if it doesn't work still, worked for me!
Hi Scott does this work with the 2003-2004 keys. My R53 was made late 03 model year 04. I want to know if this is how we program this keys too only reason i ask is it looks different, it doesnt have a hatch release also its a US model
Did you did it ? Please let me know I have 2004
@@sabahjason1 never tried
Very helpful ,very simple instructions ,thanks
You’re an absolute legend mate!
Scott, your the man! God bless you
I just programmed my key fob - great info and simple, I will share with my friends.
Cool, would you have instructions for an R56 by chance, cheers,
Hey, does this also work on the first gen keys?
Hi Scott, that was perfectly explained! I'm intrigued by what kind of dial (goes up and down when key is in the ignition)
you have there where the air blowers used to be? I've never seen this on a mini and it looks stunning, but what does it say?
Yay! Just back to work after COVID and needed this fixed. Thanks 🙏 😊
Thanks Scott for this demo. The instructions worked perfectly for registering, i can lock/ulock my car with new key but the ignition didn't start. do you have any idea ? Thanks.
have the same problem
Thanks Scott. The instructions worked perfectly in registering my new key fob. Q: The uncut key was lasered cut by a local lock smith. The issue is that the new key opens the door manually and turns the ignition but will not started. Does the new cut key require some sort of programming? Thanks and regards.
Hi Robert, i have the same issue did you find any fix or a workaround solution ?
Thanks a lot. Regards.
Aslham did you find a solution? I need a spare and would rather not pay dealer fees
It's old now but for anyone new wondering, it's likely you didn't get the key coded. There's an RF chip in all reasonably modern cars now that must be programmed in order to start the car. If you take the key apart you'll see the small chip somewhere in the housing.
Good registered locksmiths should be able to have access to the codes to reprogram it. Otherwise it's a trip to the dealer.
I LOVE you!!! seriously this has been the hardest thing to research on utube for me since 4ever.
THANK GOODNESS FOR U AND YOUR VIDEO I FINALLY finally have a working key system now for my 05' mini. and I am smiles from eat to ear. You have just gotten my vote for BEST EVER THOUGHT OF UTUBE SELF MADE VIDEO !! congrats lmao
Nice one! Works on mini 2004 too
I have 04 mini cooper S too :) there's only two buttons on the key... so did you just push the small round button(lock button) and mini amblem button 3times?
Just bought a mini Cooper S 03 plate and need a spare. Can I buy one with the chip online via eBay or similar and programme it this way?
Brilliant, worked a treat. Thank you very much!!
Hi does this work with the r57 key fog as I’m having trouble start straight away or cud take 8or 9 times before it start it’s meant to be rechargeable battery mines a 2015 r57
Hi, I have a 04 plate and need another key, do you know if this is possible to do to add another key to an 04? Also are second hand keys reprogrammable in the same way? Cheers
From the point of view of registering, Yes a second hand BMW MINI Key from an R51-53 can be electronically registered to open-close the doors, however you will need a new Key cut to actually fit the ignition and door barrel.
Scott Gollaglee Thanks, that's great news, I can get a second hand key that has a new uncut blade so hopefully then that will cover everything.
Hey! I got myself a new uncut key from eBay with a new battery and all, do you think it can be registered with this method? ... BTW my car is a 05 Mini Cooper r50.
Thanks
I also want to know if this is possible
It worked!! Brilliant! Many thanks mate.
I had two working keys but somebody did something today with the battery on my car and now neither key will work despite trying what you have suggested. I went to Timpson’s and they said both keys are definitely trying to signal One of the guys even tried to do what you’ve done in the video but nothing. My friend has now worried me saying that maybe somebody has fried my BCM? The car starts and drives fine. All the windows are fine lights wipers. I just can’t get the key to lock the car anymore.
Hi, Scott thanks that worked for me, I just need to do the ignition on an of 5 times. Are the dials in your air diffusers Factor of after market?
Yes they are after market dials for water temp and oil pressure .
They are the best ones I have seen where did you get them?
Hello I have a R50 2006 mini cabrio with only 1 key, can I program other key without deprogram the first one? thank you!
Hi Scott, my old key of Mini 06 stop working and I bought a new key ( not yet cut) with chip online. Can I register this new key as you showed in your video after I get it cut?
I replaced my mirror, bought and coded a new key that starts the car and I still can't get my keyless to work. 05MCS. This sucks
Hi Scott, I have a mini cooper r50 that I had to change the control module, now the key control does not work, I tried to do the same as you but it did not work. Do you have any advice so I can reprogram my r50. Thank you
Works a treat. Thanks for uploading the video. Well worth a 'thumbs up'
Thank you, bought a 54 plate Mini and the previous owner had only used one key therefore the 2nd key had gone flat, drove around for a few hrs using flat key and still not working on lock/unlock, did what your video said and 2nd key is working again :)
I wonder how often should you rotate the keys to prevent the other going flat ?
Our 2nd Key is used once or twice a month and does maintain its charge quite well
How long it would take to actually go flat I am not sure and i suppose it depends on the battery, a well used key may loose its charge quicker than a less used key due to the number of charge cycles put through the battery.
Hi, my remote control was working well, locking and unlocking from the outside. But I was trying to activate the Convenience Opening Mode and I did what you show on your video and my remote does not work anymore, so now I have to do it manually to lock or unlock the vehicle, by turning the key in the door. Is there any way I can make the remote control to work again? Thanks!
Did u find any way to make it work again I have same problem
Is 2004 same ?
this video is also not just soooo so very hard to find another like this, but it is also totally and completely Easy to follow and extremely easy to understand
so thank u my friend ! u Have made me a VerY HAPPY Woman Tonight ;)) lol. yay. thanks again!! it awesome as heck!!!!!!!!!!
Thank you so much for the video. Saved the day. 🎉🎉🎉
Hi I’ve got 2 keys but when I tried to register both one registers but when I do the second key it registers but then the first key I registered unregistered any ideas please thanks phil
I think what you were doing was using the 1st (working) key to put the car in registering mode, then press buttons on the new (but cut?) key to be registered. Am I right?
Both keys were allready registered you are correct on that. The BMW process of switching the ignition on but not starting the car then taking the key out will put the car in registration mode if an unregistered key transmits within 10 seconds the car will register it .
By registering, the 3 buttons will lock unlock doors and hatch and immobilizer will allow key to start engine assuming key has been cut?
Don't want to lose the functionality of my only working key... Hence I need to be certain. Sorry.
Just one extra detail I found the hard way on a 2007 Cooper S, you have to do the button pressing thing on ALL the keys before putting any one of them in the ignition & turning it on to save the settings. Otherwise every time you do one key it un-does the other(s).
I have a 2007 mini, i wanted to make my own replacement car key. Since i just have one key, o recently purchased this , it is mini one. Not sure about what R.. model is this. Was searching on website. Got a mew key fob for mini . Not sure what to do next. Please kindly help
Mission accomplished. Thanks!
My two dead keys are now locking and unlocking the doors, but will not start my car. Do you have any suggestions for this.
Hi there i got mini cooper s 2004
And i haven't used the car for 2 month and the bAtterij died on the car i charged the batterij the car start fine but my key is not working .. And i tried to take you steps. But it isn't working ???
Is there any other way
3 possible problems
the Key has not fully charged enough to send the radio signal to the receiver
the Key is faulty and is not sending a signal
or the receiver within the rear view mirror is not receiving it
possible tests you can Do if you know someone with a MINI 2006 or below and you trust them, after all you are granting them access to open your car with their key
Try registering your key with their car and Try their key registering with your car
Hi. I have recently purchased a 2002 Mini which only came with one key which had broken buttons and didn't work. I ordered a new key from a locksmith. They put the old chip and a new battery into the new key. The lock button works, the unlock button only makes the click sound when I am inside but doesn't unlock. I have tried to reprogramme the key as per your video but nothing works. The locksmith said for me to go see them in a couple of weeks when their boss is back. Is there anything I can do meantime to get it working?
Hi inside the rear view mirror is the receiver this often gets wet due to a windscreen seal issue from manufacturer, it will have a white dust on it that effects the electronics in various ways. it can be cleaned with a toothbrush and my other video shows how .
thanks much for the vid Scott ,it works like a charm
Thanx for the video mate, very helpful x
Hi, wondered if you can help, will this work on the older mini key? I have an 03 mini one and it just wont connect to the car again,
hi have you tried charging the battery in the key ? see some of my replies on how to do this . if this does not help .look at my other reply pinned at the top to check if the receiver has got wet in the past
Don't need a working key to program a 2nd key?? Anyone who got into the car with a cut key would be able to "register" a key to start engine and drive away?
So, I have a working key (kind like yours, with blade) that its buttons lock unlock door, blade physically opens doors/trunk/ignition, immobilizer works to start engine. How I just bought a new key and have its blade cut to match, then how do I program (or register) it so that it works like my 1st key?
yes registering a new key does not need an existing key . however if you do have two keys then you need to register them both in the same session else the existing key will be un registered
can you also do it this way with a mini R56?
Are you able to start the car using a 3rd party?? I was able to pair it but it wont start…
On what year MINI did you register the keys?
Its an 06 r53 mini cooper s
if my remote dont work, can I try it?
HI, i have a mini cooper s 2012 with two smart keys. Both keys starts engine but none of the remote works. Is there any other way i could do a manual programming????
I don't have a R54 - R56 so don't have a personnel experience of them
However a Quick Search of the MINI2 forum link below gives a brief description of what to do
www.mini2.com/forum/second-generation-interior-ice/144232-r56-key-remote-programming.html
Alright, will check.. Tnx a lot for ur response.

Once I do the steps whit a new key it's gona be able to start the car?
as long as the key fits the barrel, and you have successfully registered the new key yes it should start the car.
+Scott Gollaglee
Hi Scott, does this method works for a 2007 Mini Cooper-S.? My keys remote part is damaged. Do I need a Virgin remote part to register it? Could you give some info pls.
How do I get the key cutting code AKL?
Thank you very much! You saved the day!
can you show me how to set my key for my 02 mini
You are a perfect. Have a good day!!!
It does the lock.and ucok thing but it doesn't turn the engine on
Hi i done all this. The door locked/unlocked but on ignition it wont start
Hmm 😒 the ignition key Barrel contains the charger for the key I don't have the car any more but I dont think there is any radio transmitter there ... to send the signal to the key I believe its in the rear view mirror .. early minis had an issue with the windscreen leaking and water in the rear view mirror where the transmitter for the door is .. ans often shorts the chip when white calcium build up happens he key other video it may help
Thanks! You help me with my new key !
I was a year to late for this video but glad I found it😂
Just had this issue with my "06 Mini S. The repair center are asking for $400. That's too much for a software repair.
Were can I register a BMW mini r53 key fob ?
I meant where can I purchase it at?
Merci l'ami.
Can I do it for 2005 Mini Cooper
Vladimir Hi yes this should work for a 2005 mini be aware if the key has not been used for a while the battery will be flat you can charge it on any wireless charger
Anyone know how to do the two button style remote
Miission accomplished. Thanks!
Changed the battery and soldering it in, yup key dosent work.
When I program one key, the other one disconnects and stops working, any solutions please? Can't get both keys to work.
Hi Your mini should be able to register 3 keys assuming it's an R51 to R53 I have never owned a latter model .so just some extra checks when you say unregistered is it that the key won't open the doors ? If so try the key near to the rear view mirror where the sensor is just in case it's poor signal . If it works it could be 1of 2 things , poor battery charge in the key or moister over time has corroded the sensor in the mirror , you can charge the key either by driving or use any wireless charger I used a Braun toothbrush charger on top of the key over night keys loose charge if not used , a good battery will last about 30 days without use. A new one will last longer
If the batteries are ok Check the sensor in the mini my other video shows mine after water had leaked through the windscreen and into the mirror housing and the doors would not unlock
@@scottgollaglee I'm not sure if you got what I meant. Both keys work fine even from distance. But when I register one key the second stops working. Then if I register the second key, the first one stops working. Basically I can't get them both to work. :(
are you registering them on separate occasions ?
try registering both keys in the same registration process
like In the video
take 1 key follow the registration process if successful it should lock and unlock the doors
whilst the car is still in registration mode (don't open any of the doors or put the key back in the ignition ) try registering the second key . it should lock and unlock the door again if successfulthat should be both keys registered.
If not there is an issue
@@scottgollaglee Ohh, thank you mate! Now I got it finally :D
Thank you!!!
What about the immo?
hello Scott
my friend? my kay stop walking what can i do pls
It may be a flat battery in the key fob . The key is charged by the igntion using a system similar to an electric tooth brush
in a lot af cases it is just a flat battery and placing the key in rhe ignition and going for a long drive will charge it backup , if the drive is out of the question you can use a braun toothbrush charger by placing the key under it, the magnetic field will start to charge it. I would leave over night to fully charge and then try registering the key.
thank you my brov
Thanks
Hi mine doesn't do anything with either key
Could be 1 of 2 things flat batteries in the keys . Use an wireless inductive charger I used a braun tooth brush charger.. it will take about 2 hours charging do this for both keys
Or it could be the receiver in the rear view mirror has some gunk on it that needs cleaning see my other video
Put new battery fitted and still dont
Hi Scott, hoping you'll be able to answer this after all these years. I've got a 2002 Mini Cooper where the key only has two buttons instead of 3. I'm planning to get a new key and wondering if 1) i'll get one of the newer keys or will it have to be the same and if not, how I would go about programming the older key?
Fantastic !
Tried this did not work on my 2006 mini
when i connect one key it disconnects the other
i bought a new key to replace a lost one could it be that it is still remembering the lost one?
Sorry for the delay in replying , Try registering Both keys at the same time ,
Notice I do this in the Video, I believe the Car only Stores 2 Keys.
no luck here i have 2004 cooper tried several times
Check the charge of your key fob if not used for a while the battery will be very low try dooing it near to the tear view mirror as the sensor is there or try charging it by placing the key fob over a toothbrush charger or a wireless phone charger. over night and retry
I no have this key my model is 2015
Thanks for your help
Thank you so much
Does it work for R50?
