  • Well, here we are.
I love Spider-Man, and I'm not talking about Peter Parker. Today, I will be discussing Miles Morales, and why he is the Spider-Man we need.
This video is my OPINION. Do you agree? Disagree? Let me know.

Peter has more development and for that reason I think it's unfair to say which is a better character.
But you are goddamn right, Miles Morales it's the best thing that happened to the Spider-Man legacy in years.

I'm black and I remember that when Miles was introduced back in 2011, I didn't give a care in the world about him because it looked like a weak attempt to throw a black character into the media. I always hated that when people say they need more diverse characters, they immediately think of a black person. After the movie came out 7 years later, Miles Morales has become my personal favorite of Spider-man; not for his race but how is was so expertly handled in the movie. One of the things that made me love Miles so much when watching Into the Spider Verse was that he is an original character of story. How? because so many black characters that are made, the story line behind the character has to fight through is always the whole fighting against discrimination and prejudice crap; that story line for black characters has been getting old. Miles' story is completely different, original, and can relate to other people.
Another thing I like about Miles in his movie, he is a hero who does not try to fight for a girl. A hero doesn't always need to have some girl in his fucking life as a prize in his hero work; no kissing scene whatsoever for Miles as a hero, I swear, if I see the girl getting introduced as the character's crush by watching her walk down the school hallway in slow motion and waving her hair to the side and smiling at others one more time, I will give the producers a black eye.
And lastly, Miles' motivation is completely justifiable. Ever since I was 14, I always hate how teenage characters in animated stuff or movies are always rebelling against their superiors or elders and not following orders believing that they can fucking do shit on their own as if they are fucking ready. Just like how my classmates rebel against our teachers. Miles is actually rebelling because he made a promise and wishes to keep it and doesn't want to let the person he made that promise to down, and I freaking admire that! It reminds me when I went behind my parents back to get some meat, crackers, juice, bread, chips, and water in a bag and my brother and I would take the bag to this homeless person who need it. I admire teens who rebel against their elders for a good reason and only when the elder is being a complete shit case. Also, he feels guilt for doing nothing to help so he is trying to make up for it. He is a teenager who is rebelling for good reason. I freaking love that. I had Miles all wrong back in 2011 but thanks to Into the Spider Verse, I have a new found respect for him and he is my personal favorite as Spider-Man. I don't like characters because they are the same color as me, I like a character just as character, how his/her story goes to make me like them and how I feel relatable to them. I have been in Peter Parker's shoes before but I am black. I don't need to relate to someone because of skin color. I relate to characters not because they look like me, I relate to them because they are a human being like me. Spider-Man has been my favorite superhero since 2001 so I say "EXCELSIOR"!

Wait it was 2011? I could swore it was 2008. But I digress, as it's nice to know that I wasn't the only black person who didn't like Miles when he debuted. I HATE this notion that I have to like a character for having the same skin color as me.
That's not to say I don't have any favorite black heroes, because as a 90s kid whooo, that's a long list. Some examples are Spawn, Blade, Black Panther, WarMachine, and Static(to name a few...). But I like these characters for their personalities and back stories.
And I wouldn't get that from Miles until the Spiderverse film. To which, sweet Heaven... He's a smart kid who'd rather focus on his artistic endeavors than his grades. That was me in high school, the difference being while Miles is a grafitti artist, I'm a comic artist and writer.
But what's irritating about this now is when the Wesley Snipes Blade film came out, Snipes' portrayal of Blade impacted how he was written in the comics and other media. Blade went from a typical angry anti-hero to a anti-hero with a sense of style and devil may care swagger that felt distinct.
And I thought Miles was gonna get the same treatment, but it seems ever since Spiderverse came out, the writing for Miles in the comics got worst... Which I reiterate is irritating. Because in Spiderverse he was a kid who happens to be black. Why that can't be replicated is beyond me.

Never gonna be sold on the character. Simply because he wasn't great until Spider Verse. The Comic Book version of Miles is also so bad that it's hard to put that aside when looking at how great he is in ITSV.
Comic Book Miles suffered from just how bad Bendis wrote him.

I hate when people say Miles is their favorite Spider-Man because he's black, because he's Hispanic, or both and that's their only reason. They don't see Miles past his skin and honestly that really sucks. I'm black and I thought Miles was just a diversity push Peter clone and that's all he'd be since creativity is lacking nowadays but after he had time to grow from his first appearance he gained his own identity. It was so inspiring to me to see a story about stepping out of someone's shadow to cast your own light on the world and in two years we got two amazing stories about learning to just be the best person you can be and I think that's just beautiful storytelling that is only able to be made because of past heroes. Miles is the next generation of Spider-Man whether people like it or not and instead of feeling nervous about forced identity politics in Spider-Man I feel hopeful that Miles will take up the mantle and be himself. I'm rambling here but I really love Spider-Man and I really love how Miles grew as a character since his first introduction. Can't wait for Spider-Verse 2 and I can't wait to see how they handle my favorite Spider-Man, 2099. The future is bright for Spider-Man fans even if there's a few stumbles across the way

I love spider-man Miles Morales. I like how he helps the little guy, something that MCU peter was supposed to do. While Spider-Man is out there fighting some guy dressed like a bird, miles helps find his neighbors cat, he helps people in his neighborhood. The big guys can handle the big stuff, Miles understands that, but it doesn't mean it has to be a bad thing, unlike MCU peter, He's happy about it. Miles cares about the little things. He's HARLEM'S spider-man, he's BROOKLYN'S spider-man. That's all that he needs to be.

I loved that movie so much man, im a big fan of the ultimate universe and when I heared this would come out I got really hyped. My 2 favourite scenes by far was peters death and miles leap of faith. On the one hand even tho I knew that peter had to die in order for miles to fill his shoes I wasn't prepared on how they did it man, I wont lie when kingpin killed him I started tearing up a bit I know I know it cliche af but it has been a long ass time a movie made me tear up(since logan came out). I loved how they did it and it shows on how the made the whole thing work. The leap of faith tho god damn what a scene, I absolutely LOVE how the shot it, the glass break how he falls clumsily then upside down shot of the city and him rising up to the heroes journey. It was so damn good by far mt favourite animated spiderman movie.

Miles to me was never really interesting. I always thought he was a cocky and just annoying character but into the spiderverse and the Miles morales game changed my opinion on him and actually made him a much more compelling character and someone who I could relate to.
He also thought me to be myself.

As a Black man, why do we need Miles Morales? His only selling point is that he's not White and has Spider-Man's powers. He literally adds nothing, yet he's praised like he's the only Black Character. Wouldn't it be better if an original Black Character was created instead of leeching off the success of better characters?

dont know if u know, but THE jump in 6:20 had some cool director's notes: in the scene he's jumping down off a building right? but the shot is placed upside down, making him face up, meaning that he toom that _leap of faith_ and led him to growth.

miles is the embodiment of "anyone can wear the mask". the whole movie is the embodiment of this message and that's why I think spiderverse works greatly with showing this message. people say noir spider, peny parker, and peter porker were just there for a few laughs but I think they are there to say spider-man is not one character, but an idea. so you can bee a cartoon pig, an uwu girl with a giant robot, or a black and white shady spidey, but no matter what, those are still all spider-man because spider-man is not the person but the idea of "with great power comes great responsibility" and that's why spiderverse tells "anyone can wear the mask" with its cast of a female spider-woman, black spider-man, a deppresed spider-man, as the main cast but also wildly different characters who all portray this great message and this great character. nough said.

I was like oh boy Miles is better than ever after being freshed out. Then I heard about his solo movie and spider-verse stuff in Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse. I am so gonna watch the movie. To see how that universe's Miles's character development is.
