  • Varg Vikernes decided to tell us more about the reality of the Noruegan Black Metal Scene and so on.
I decided to translate one more video for the spanish speaking public, it was taken from the official Varg Vikernes UA-cam chanel, I will continue to translate more, so enjoy this one and sorry for the little mistakes, next time I'll do it better, cheers.

In 1995 when I was 13 I discovered black metal, there was this one guy in my home town near palermo who was into it and introduced me to it.
I spent my teenage years hanging out in the metal scene in palermo and whenever I hear you or some other NBM guy talk about the scene in Norway back in the day, it reminds me of the semi sane guys I used to hang out with here so far away.

aside from the romanticists and weird stan culture, when it comes to their musicality, i find mayhem to be an unappreciated & underrated niche. i'm gonna talk about a few songs in particular...
Funeral Fog: is the most traditional 2nd wave mayhem song. a masterfully paced and built up track. amazing drum rolls throughout the song, atilla's version really builds up tension in the vocals. also, 2 riffs in the song inspired 2 riffs in My Journey to the Stars.
Freezing Moon: most iconic black metal solo. the main tremolo riff ain't the best but that 2nd riff was groovy af, and i wish that bridge riff before that verse went on longer...
Cursed in eternity: one of the best tremolo riffs ever has to be the riff after the 2nd verse. this used to be my favorite song in the album at one point, and is the most "dmds" sounding song.
Pagan Fears: The Arpeggio/power chord combo in the second riff is insanely diabolical, and the third riff was used by Darkthrone in Under A Funeral Moon.
Life Eternal: the most powerful song on the album by far. sounds like you're being rushed out of a Transylvanian prison out of the window, on a magic carpet, then as you fly above the clouds, your vampiric blood boils and your skin burns. the breakdown is one of the best i've ever heard in metal, period!
i probably wouldn't have gotten into their music if it weren't for their story, but goddamn is there some overlooked gold in that album...
i think it's worth noting that mayhem toured leipzig in 1990, and released the tapes in 91'. that experimental sloppy, dank, steampunk sound was the first biggest step from 1st wave bm 2nd wave, and sounds like that were unheard of in metal. many figureheads of the 2nd wave, including fenriz, owned the tape. so while nocturno culto denies influence from mayhem, the foundation for dt's sound is undeniably built off their influence.

The fact that he so candidly talks about Euronymous, the individual he killed, by using his old stage name and all... it's crazy , and there's really not many cases like this where you hear a murderer talk about their victim in a normal way , or in a context that is not to do with the murder itself. Very interesting...
Reminds me a little bit of that Japanese dude who killed and ate a woman then wrote a book about it after and became a celebrity... but again, he only spoke of her as his victim. ..

No one truly knows what drives a man to kill another man. But this is not the same Varg from 1993. This is a man who has grown from a troubled and misguided youth into a man who has gained understanding and wisdom from his experiences in life. Boys react and men respond. Big difference in how feuds and resentments between the two are settled. In a strange way Varg is beginning to resemble the bearded knights on the cover of the Dauði Baldrs LP. Fitting for a modern viking tale.

Well in the interview that he did, he talks about why he liked Venom so much and why they were acceptable. I think he was talking about Bathory too. He said that “There is no way somebody can make music that evil without being evil themselves.” He even did say though that he was probably wrong and it most likely was all an image but he liked to think they were evil probably simply just because he wanted to not be a hypocrite. He also said something about Dark Throne and Burzum. Both of which he basically said “I created it first but its still good” which really kind of just does show everybody that he was the type of person to take credit for it all but, in all fairness he did create the “True Norwegian Black Metal” scene/sound.

All bands are inspired by someone else, except the cavemen who started hitting rocks against rocks to make sound, but when a band sounds exactly like another band, I think that is a problem. @@CameronBlaylock I agree there's no excuse and thinking about it still shocks me. I do think the storyline is a bit different. Euronymous did buzz him in. Varg said they talked about contracts, he told Euro to fuck off and they started fighting. If Euro was going for a knife or shotgun, like Varg says, I have no idea (if there were a shotgun you'd expect the police to find it during the search of his house). But them having a conversation first does align with the facts. If Varg just enters (how? The door is locked) and starts stabbing it doesn't make sense for Euro to be able to get outside, Varg is inbetween him and the door.
It's so fucking grisly, though. Varg running after him and stabbing him in the back. He says Euro fell, said 'enough' but tried to kick him after, after which 'he finished him off' by stabbing him in the forehead. Here Varg being a nazi shines through: 'he had contempt for Euro's weakness' so killed him. It's absolutely disgusting to think about,. If true I wonder how things would've gone if Euro hadn't kicked.
Varg is charismatic and interesting to listen to, but an absolutely contemptible human being. He has zero empathy, only cares about himself and his racism is unbelievably insane. I just read his autobiography. It was a great read, I was totally hooked but at the same time feel dirty for having given him money.

@@dumblecore i like that you think for yourself. anyway, regarding the "buzzing in", i think you're forgetting that snorre ratted varg out, confirming that he planned to kill him all along.
in the lords of chaos interview with snorre in prison, he claims that varg was jealous of faust's bm clout, claiming "all he did was stab a homosexual", and considering varg hated euronymous, he thought he'd blow faust"s act out of the water by stabbing the head-honcho to death.
a few other things to note:
-hellhammer claims varg was joking about killing euronymous since he was in mayhem
-varg leaves out the details in ALL of his stories of how euronymous supposedly magically teleported from his bedroom to the stairwell where he was screaming and fleeing.
-in other interviews, varg changes his story.
the addition of him adding the detail of euro buzzing him in was never in the original prison interview. he claims he just tried to open it, and then forced his way in when euro opened it.
also on his yt channel, he has another video where he rationalizes his breaking in, with the fact that most of them were night owls.
regardless, varg was probably the best black metal musician, and i admittedly also enjoy thulean perspective. that being said, he's sort of a scumbag...

Even though they were by far his most popular videos, he felt he had a lot more important things to say and he never took the easy route of recycling his BM stories over and over. For that reason in particular, their music is just not a pleasant listening experience for me. As for Mayhem, the best thing that ever happened for them was De Mysteriis.. and I think it was all because of the Turkish vocalist that Euronymous hired for the recording. He was very key IMO and both before or after he left, the group was lifeless and obscure, just like most of Emperor's entire career.
