I bought that space marine battle box a bit ago, wanted you to know that you helped to inspire me to go ahead and pull the trigger on making them the sons of the Russ. I’ve always loved their lore and model range but have always been a shopper, to see what army I want. Thanks man. Your army is looking great too by the way. Keep up making all the great content.
@@tabletopskirmishgames It was indeed very helpful, I tagged you on Instagram on the photo of the base I made. Pictures with Bjorn the Fell-Handed on the base will follow soon as well! 🙌🏻
I didn't have any problems with it for these. It has happened on one or two other projects a bit but I found when painted they were fine. You could add some watered down PVA and let that set to be super safe.
I think that would work. You can get brown pastes that might save you having to paint them too. Vallejo Thick Mud is brilliant and it has bits of texture in it that would be perfect for the eastern front theme.
Awesome video! Makes me wanna repaint my entire army. May i ask where you got those bird/crow miniatures from? They don't look 40k. Thank you in advance to anyone who can help!
I've viewed a lot of approaches to winter bases but this looks the most practical and cost effective. Do you scrape the areas clear when mounting the model afterwards or use pins? Good job.
Yes, for the Space Marines I scrape away a bit of the base to make it flat. For the wolves I went right down to the plastic for a good bond. I'll be uploading a video for this soon. Thanks for watching!
Great video! Just a question- how do you paint your mini if you are painting the base separate? Do you use some pva glue to temporarily stick it to a spare base when painting? Thanks!
Superglue is the way to go. Some brands leave a white chalky residue, which isn't a huge problem on white bases like this but be careful on other style bases. I like to use Loctite SuperGlue as it doesn't leave any residue.
Thank you for this, I'm following your tutorial with excellent results. What tool do you use to scrape the base even to place the model? I'm nervous to damage these pretty bases haha.
Hey that's awesome to hear, really pleased the video is helpful. I used a craft file, the round pointy one to scrape away the footprints. You could use anything like that.
@@tabletopskirmishgames Thank you! I grabbed a set. Have you ever experimented with putting a layer of 'ard coat gloss over the frozen water (crackle paint) areas? I'm thinking of trying it out on one.
I usually do forest or swamp bases but I have found that baking soda works great for ice effects, as well as being a great filler for cracks and making instant bonds between even the most problematic of pieces while building.
@@tabletopskirmishgames I do for ice like effects, but your method is a lot better! Baking soda like you said makes almost a cement when combined with superglue almost instantly so it doesn't let you have anywhere close to the control your method provides.
How do I stop the agrellan earth from falling off once it's dried? It just drops off in big chunks when i upend the model, and then even lightly drawing a brush across strips the rest...
It shouldn't be doing that, it's designed to go onto the bases and be painted over. Every time I've used agrellan earth it's worked fine, so I don't know what to say. I've looked online and lots of people say to make sure you prime first and even to seal after with a paint. I guess the spray I used helped to seal it in.
I've tried this method, but I feel like the talassar blue is much darker than in your video. Rather than icy light blue, it looks like deep dark blue. What might be causing it?
@@tabletopskirmishgames Yes, though I just measured it by depositing a full brush onto a palette, rather than some pipette. Thinning it with contrast medium doesn't seem to change the color much though. Could be also due to the way I texture the base or drybrush. Drybrushing white doesn't seem to reach most of the recesses, so most of the base remains blue. I also use Vallejo grey sand rather than the pumice.
That's an awesome effect! I've been doing my Tyranids in an artic theme and have been wanting to level up the basing with them.
Thanks! Arctic Tyranids sound awesome!
I literally just started painting my snow bases when this video came up
That's awesome timing! Have fun getting yours made.
These are great! About to start up a World Eaters army and wanted to base them in a snowy setting for a contrast with their armor.
Glad the video is helpful, thank you 👊

Say goodbye to your wallet and hello to your new plastic addiction!
That's so cool! Have fun getting the army ready for battle and thanks for watching!
🤣

I'm doing a LichKing themed VC army and this is just what I wanted!
Awesome to hear, have fun!
Question, did you apply something to the Agrellean Earth paint so it wouldn't chip or flake off before you painted over it with blue?
how do you keep the agtrllan earth from flaking off?
I didn't have any problems with it for these. It has happened on one or two other projects a bit but I found when painted they were fine. You could add some watered down PVA and let that set to be super safe.
D’you reckon the effect would be similar using brown instead of blue for a more eastern front theme?
I think that would work. You can get brown pastes that might save you having to paint them too. Vallejo Thick Mud is brilliant and it has bits of texture in it that would be perfect for the eastern front theme.
Those bases looks great man! Thanks for the video
Thank you!
these are awesome! im a new painter, and i was wondering why you need to mix the talassar blue with the contrast medium
Better flow, more transparent

Thanks, Djarov! Those crows are Aetherwings from the Stormcast Eternals.
@@tabletopskirmishgames Thank you! :D
I make bases like that only with white rims. I like the blue with white dry brush better. I will try that way, I like the look you did.
Thanks! Originally I was going to paint the rims blue but tried out a dry brush on one of them and really liked the result.
I'd be curious to see how you'd paint rocks and cork in that colour scheme, I'm stuck on that part
I'd go with the same techniques except the initial step with the technical paints.

I superglue them onto a bottle lid. Super glue allows you to snap off the mini smoothly so you don't damage it.
@@tabletopskirmishgames thanks! Do you superglue just 1 foot?
If you do the bases before, what’s the best way to attach the minis? Superglue? I plan on using this recipe for my votann

Freaking awesome tutorial my friend! ❄
Thanks so much!

I've used it with super glue before and makes a solid cement. What glue do you use with it for your bases?

What contrast medium did you use to mix with the Talassar Blue?
citadel has its own contrast medium which worked well for me
I'm doing a Slaanesh army in a winter themes and this was exactly the style I was looking for.
Nice one, glad it was helpful. Thanks for watching!
More bases please!
I'll be doing more grassy/flowery bases next month for the Fantasy models and Weekend Warriors terrain.
